now. 7:00. we're live in the east bay where an enormous tree has crashed onto a roadway in alamo. tara moriarty is out there in the rain and coming up in minutes, she will tell us about the problems it's causing and the people who are stranded by this. not a good way to start to monday morning. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. >> i'm dave clark. let's go straight to steve paulson. you know all about the weather. >> rain again. not heavy, heavy. the ground took in a lot of rain last week. now everything will start to run off. for the morning commute, it will be a wet one. it's cloudy, cold. already had gusts to 43 at the napa airport. 20 to 40 miles an hour. sfo east at 29. some of the heavier amounts

look like they are pushing off to the big valley. there's plenty to go. santa cruz right over highway 17, back towards morgan hill and gilroy, that looks to be the heaviest down to steady rain in monterey. when you start to see the lighter greens, that's decreasing in intensity. same for the east bay. some of this might be drip, drip, drip, we'll still be in the rain for most of the day, most of the week. not as much to the north. but there are have been 1-inch amounts for many. no warnings or watches. cold air development will keep nus a cold pattern. 40s and 50s on the temps. gusts to 38. napa airport is going bonkers. concord, 20. cold today. if you don't have to leave house the -- to leave the --

to leave the house, i wouldn't. it looks like the rain is letting up. but i'm sure the table has already been set with all sorts of issues, sal. >> i've learned from you, the other day when there's no clouds, the temperatures dropped. >> that's correct. >> i listened to you for what? a long time. and today it's cold, too, but not as cold as the other day. steve has given me a lot of knowledge over the years. let's take a look -- i know i've traded some of my traffic knowledge with him. whenever you see a rainy day it makes for a commute like this. carquinez bridge, the macarthur maze has taken an hour. normally on a good day, it's 20 minutes to do a dry. now it's taking three times as much to drive this stretch, getting out to the bay bridge toll plaza, when you get to the toll plaza, you will be waiting there for another 40 minutes. are you sure you want to do this? you may not have a choice getting into san francisco. it stopped raining which will help the commute out. there was an earlier accident on the bridge. that's why it's very slow.

the east bay is a mess. 580 and 680. we had earlier problems to blame. 580 is backed up to the altamont past. 608 backed up to pleasanton and fremont. 880 slows before 238. the san mateo bridge is slow and there's standing water in many spots. today is one of those days -- i don't want to not mention, highway 24 is a mess as you drive out of pleasant hill over to orinda. 7:04. back to the desk. >> all right, thank you, sal. people who were still cleaning up from last week's storm, now they are having to deal with more problems. tara moriarty is live in aim law mow where -- alamo where people are waking up to a big tree in the roadway. >> reporter: crews have been working hard to clear enough of it to the side of the road so there's some sort of a path so that cars can get through. if you take a look behind me, you can see they must have

heard this tree come down. it's absolutely massive, about 75 feet tall. the top branches sliced through a fence, crews have been chopping away for more than an hour now. the recent rains have saturated the ground, making it safety enough to send the tree onto stone valley way. we're near ranger court. until this giant oak tree is removed, people in about 20 homes will be stuck. this tree toppled around 2:30 this morning, hopefully, it won't be too much longer. the big chunk, some of the big chunks are removed. but the base of the tree is still out here. now we know that today's dousing of rain is likely to add an inch or two to the bay area. it should rain through today with a second system expected to arrive wednesday and that system could bring about 2 to 4 inches. it's not over yet. we are live in alma low, --

alamo. back to you. >> thank you. more snow is falling in the sierra this morning. this is video taken from a caltrans camera along interstate 80 near kingvale. about 30 minutes ago, you could see the snow coming down. plows going by. chains are required on 880 from placer county to the donner lake interchange. this new snow comes after the last storm brought up to 2 feet of fresh powder in many parts of the sierra. the damage from last week's storm is estimated at $16 million in sonoma county alone. that damage estimate is expected to climb much higher with the new round of rain this week. tomorrow, sonoma county supervisors are expected to extend the local emergency that was declared last thursday for another 30 days. that move is designed to provide disaster aid for homeowners and businesses hit hard by the big storm.

>> 7:06. we're still following developing news from sidney, australia. a hostage situation raising big concerns about a terrorist attack. a gunman took several people hostage inside a cafe in downtown -- downtown sydney. brian flores has more information about the man believed to be responsible. >> it remains a very tense situation. it's in the early-morning hours in sydney. we continue to watch the live news feed from this cafe in sydney. it appears another hostage has managed to escape. that brins the total number who escaped to six. at this point, they continue to have some type of contact with the gunman, authorities do, and they hope this ends peacefully. we understand that authorities know who the gunman is. through several media reports he's identifieded at 51-year-

old man monice. he's a self-described cleric. he has a criminal history including reports of being accessory to murder of his ex- wife and say he's originally from iran. it remains unclear if he has ties to isis or if a lone wolf. police say he entered the normally busy cafe during the morning rush hour roughly around the 9:30 a.m., local time there and took an unknown number of hostages. we also understand that of a they escaped, he became more agitate and started yessing -- agitated and starting yelling. >> our approach is to resolve this peacefully. it might take a bit of time. but that's our approach. now, our priority is the people inside that location and

clearly the safety of the people nearby. >> we continue to watch the feed. we understand that four more people have escaped from the cafe. we continue to watch the developments there. but the area around the cafe continues to be evacuated. lockeddown by police. the white house monitoring the situation and advising all u.s. citizens in sydney to stay away from the area. we saw at least five people escape from the cafe. so possibly now up to ten people have escaped from this gunman who is holding up the lindt cafe in sydney. a flag appeared in the window with an islamic declaration on it. the gunman is asking for an isis flag to be delivered. he's doing this through social immediate ia. the police commissioner says there's terrorism footing tied to the situation. so this remains a very fluid situation as we speak. also media reports from the

hostages as well that there are multiple explosive devices in the cafe, perhaps central sydney. that area that we're talking about is the size of new york's times square. the u.s. consulate in the area also monitoring the situation. it remains a very fluid situation. we're taking a live acthe live feed. about four people, five people, it looks like they've escaped. we'll continue to follow the situation. give you more information as it becomes available. dave, back to you. >> okay. thank you. well, the situation in sydney is playing out on social media but besides updates on what's happening, there are two hashtags trending one is selfieshame. and people in the area are taking selfies and they are being called out for being rather insensitive. but there is a lot of people who are saying that piece selfies are mostly being taken by tourists. there's a positive movement coming out of this rather tense

situation. the hashtag i'llridewithyou was cre aided after the -- created after the news broke. this one says being human is given but keeping our humanity is a choice. this hashtag is a choice. this is another hashtag, restore some faith in humanity, although in this day and age, we should not have to protect people from racial abuse and then there's one another twitter -- tweet that i wanted to mention, this one, they are tweeting what forms of public transportation they are using so they can ride with any one of middle eastern decent feeling intimidated or afraid. obviously a story we'll continue to follow. dave? >> all right, tori. the ride sharing company uber is promising free rides to people who want to get pay way from the scene of that hostage situation in sydney. that's after uber was criticized for raising its

rates as the hostage situation was unfolding. a technology news website says uber briefly charged four times the usual rate to people trying to get out of that area. but after there was a backlash on social media, uber apologized and then started giving free rides. they are offering refund to the people who paid those higher fees. 7:12. back here at home, a san jose police officer, under fire. coming up in 25 minutes, his controversial tweets about the recent protests in ferguson, missouri. and new details coming out about the massive hacking attack on sony pictures. what the company is now admitting and its warning concerning leaked documents. good morning. we are looking at a commute where traffic is doing pretty well if you are driving in some areas, believe it or not, but most -- like san francisco, i'm surprised this isn't bad but most areas not doing well. we'll tell you where that is coming up.

if you will be flying out of sfo today, expect more cancellations and delays due to the weather. in the past 30 minute, sfo told us they are seeing delaying of 1 hour and 50 minutes. delays are expected to last until 11:00 tonight. 80 flights have been canceled so far this morning. that's expected to grow throughout the day. last thursday, you may recall, 250 flights at sfo were canceled due to all of the rain and also the very high winds. there were some flight delays at oakland and san jose airports last week. you are advised to check with

your airline before heading out to the airport. restaurant workers are back on the job this morning after a two-day strike at san francisco international airport. that happened last thursday and friday. they say they walked off the job over concerns about job security and healthcare. the walkout shut down most of the airport's restaurants. the workers say they've been working without a contract for more than a year. the union plans to meet with the restaurants today to continue with negotiations. a new lawsuit is in connection with a deadly shooting massacre at sandy hook elementary in newtown, connecticut. a law firm representing the families of the 26 people who were killed says it filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer, distributor and the seller of the rifle used in that shooting. this lawsuit claims the bushmaster rifle should not have been made publicly available because it's a military weapon not suited for

[bell tolling] >> yesterday, people packed churches and they lit candles remembering the sandy hook victims on the shooting's second anniversary. there bells ringing out in honor of the 26 children and teachers killed. a memorial run was also held. a new sandy hook elementary school will open up next year. well, changing gear, the streak is still alive for the golden state warriors after a win in new orleans. they trailed in the fourth quarter. coach looking nervous. they fought back to force overtime. curry had 8 of his 34 points to lead golden state to a 128-122 win. curry and the warriors will go to go for 17 wins in a row tomorrow against the grizzlies in memphis. the sacramento kings have

let's take a look now at the san mateo bridge. that's moderately heavy. but the eastshore freeway is very slow. as i look at the eastshore freeway, you can see how slow it is, i will put it up on a map for you. the traffic is mostly slow from just before highway 4. we can go to the maps now. i can show you how slow it is. trace it for you all the way down to the macarthur maze and the metering lights are on. not to be outdown, petaluma traffic is slow getting into novato. when you get to novato, it eases up, and slows into san rafael. traffic on the richmond bridge is slow and one last thing i want to show you is the traffic on 680 and 24 and highway 4 contra costa county off to a terrible start. everywhere you go, it will be slow. give yourself a lot of extra time. 7:19. let's go to steve in the weather center. >> i think one positive, the rain has kind of let up since about 4:30 this morning. very heavy. we to have cloudy skies. cold, windy, foggy. it is a stormy monday out

pushing off to the valley. some of the rainfall, redwood shores, 1.30. daly city, 1.25. san francisco, .92. i know east novato already had an inch plus. green point, oakland .90. concord, .75. san jose says .75. but not far away you can find more than that. the first system is today. another one will be here late tuesday/wednesday and then a final one arrives on friday. the monterey bay, they are getting steady rain. there are breaks. parts of the peninsula, east bay, a little bit of a line from redwood city back to palo alto and los altos. we are not done yet but the rain rates are lightening up. san ramon, dublin, livermore, concord, not too much in the north bay. the rain rates have let up a little bit. but still you get that misty pattern or light drizzle. it can add up in areas like

marin county, santa cruz mountains and towards the russian river. our system has a little bit of a wave building. it's a change in wind direction. also cold air coming in. even though the rain lets up. there's still development. 40s and 50s on the temps. east wind has been roaring. napa airport, 38. 20 at novato. that's a cold pattern. over the next three to five days, we'll see the snow level go to 4,000 feet by the end of the week. not a lot up there right now but they are going to get some snow. that will continue to stack up over the next few days. we do have some rain letting up. it will be with us. not only today but off and on through almost all week long. we finally get a break by the weekend. rainy, foggy, 50s on the temps. upper 40s for some. i think in the higher elevations. santa cruz mountains along sky line. other areas to the north. especially napa county.

police in -- police in san rafael are searching for the killer of a woman found in a parking lot behind a 4th street tavern in 2008. she had been raped and strangled. there is a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible. it was one of only six still alive in the world. and now a northern white rhino has died at the san diego zoo safari park. the 44-year-old rhino died yesterday. his death, now leaves only five white rhinos left in the world. one is at the san diego zoo safari park. one is at a zoo in the czech republic and three are at a preserve in kenya. their population has dwindled due to poachers going after their horns. breaking news. a major new development in the hostage siege in sydney. heavily-armed police have just stormed that cafe where a gunman has been tolding

it's cold. >> it's cold out there. kind of breezy, windy. some of the rain rates have let up. we're still getting some light rain pockets of fog and temperatures, 40s for many. it will be a day where it struggles to get out of the 40s. .50 to 1.25 of rain right now. 2.50 north bay. i just heard from kevin up in forestville, only .50. still gusts 20, maybe 40 miles an hour at higher elevations. napa airport has been going crazy. redwood shores 1.30. pacifica 1.10. san jose only .37. but moffett, palo alto, .50 to .75. rodeo and vallejo, .85. san francisco almost 1 inch. heavy yef rain looks to be around the santa cruz mountain, highway 17, morgan hill.

hour to drive from the carquinez bridge down to the macarthur maze. most of that is going to be very, very slow traffic along the way. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, still a big backup beyond the maze. it's one huge backup getting out to the bay bridge toll plaza. if you are driving on the peninsula, we've also had some slow traffic as well. i can show you the maps and show you the traffic on 101 is slow. 280 is not too bad. but you have to get through the bad stretch through daly city and san bruno. we go to the east bay, almost everything is lit up red and that means speeds are below 25 miles an hour or less than. 580 is a mess through castro valley and livermore. 880 is backed up almost from marina boulevard. it will be one of those commutes. we've had a lot of earlier crashes. a lot of people are driving slow because of the wet roads. back to the desk. >> sal, thank you. breaking news coming in from sydney, australia. just moments ago, more hostages ran out of the cafe in downtown

sydney where they've been held by a gunman for 17 hours. shortly after that, police stormed the building. ktvu's brian flores in our newsroom now. brian, you are listening to the media reports from australia and you've got new information about a situation that appears to be over. >> yeah, dave, good morning. a lot has happened in the past 15, 20 minutes. no doubt about that. moments ago, heavily armed police stormed the lindt cafe. here's new video in. take a listen. flee flash grenades use -- three grash -- flash gren grenades. the man is known to australian police, has an extensive criminal record being an accessory to murder to his wife. he's from iran, according to authorities. back to this situation, there were hostages inside at the time. again, moments before police entered, we counted at least 11 or 12 hostages running from the cafe, able to escape early this morning. about six also escaped. we understand that at least four of the hostages were taken by ambulance to local hospitals to be evaluated. it's unclear the conditions of those hostages. it is also believed that the gunman at least from the media outlet is down. it's unclear whether he's dead.

expect to have quite a bit of company as well. that's what the folks from the postal service are saying. this is the busiest mailing day of the entire year. the postal service will be mailing off more packages and letters handling more of the packages than they do on any other day throughout the entire year. a bit of a break in the action. this is the san jose processing and distribution facility. but let me mow you what the scene liked like a short time -- looked like a short time ago. they deliver -- just at this facility alone, they handle a million more packages today than any other day. why is today the busiest day? >> we're closing in on christmas. it's usually ten days before christmas. people spend the weekend shopping and turn their table into an assembly line. they start labeling their stuff, they trek on down to the

some controversial twitter posts by one of its police officers. the posts were a reaction against the killings of unarmed african-american men. officer white tweeted, if anyone feels they can't breathe or their lives matter, i will be at the movies tonight off duty carrying my gun. another tweet read and i'm quoting, threaten me or my family and i will use my god given and law-appointed right and dupety to kill you. those tweets have been removed. the police department says it's investigating the officer's actions and will have more so say once that review is complete. more problems for b.a.r.t.'s new oakland airport connector. the service was shut down for about 20 minutes late last night due to an electrical issue. there was also a mechanical problem that shut down service on friday. it's unclear if the two issues are related. the new airport service opened just three weeks ago.

traffic tieup in oakland on the freeways on city streets and the commute was already messy. this is really going to mess things up. and 880 northbound is already really slow. i want to ask the guys in the control room if you can pull up on my 880 camera here at the coliseum, the coliseum cam, already backed up. it's already backed up. this is leading to downtown oakland where all of this is happening. and again, this is major news for the commute. 880 northbound at broadway offramp is blocked. that's one of the busiest offramps. everybody coming out of the posey tube will be affected. if you are in alameda don't use posey tube. you will be caught in a major traffic jam. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. this is a backup here, 25 to 30 minutes at the toll plaza alone. but more than an hour if you

are waiting from anywhere else. 280 in san jose. that looks good. let me recap. major breaking news on 880 northbound. that offramp is blocked. protesters may have access to the freeway. stay with us. we'll let you know what happened. back to the desk. we're also following breaking news out of sydney, australia, where a 17-hour hostage situation appears to have ended in a burst of gunfire. now, it began during the monday morning rush hour in a cafe in the central sydney area. a lone gunman took several people hostage. we've seen at least 15 of them escape. about 30 minutes ago, heavy armed police stormed that building. brian flores closely watching all of this. you are listening to live reports from australia. so what is the latest? what do we know? >> a lot has happened in the past 30 minutes. moments ago, heavy armed australian police stormed the lindt cafe in downtown sydney. we have some new video into the

newsroom from an australian news outlet of police raiding the coffee shop putting this situation to an end. take a listen. [ sound of gunfire ] >> this is australian police storming the cafe around 2:10 sydney time. 7:10 our time. this was preempted by at least three flash grenades. we saw five or six people escape. eeps that's when australian police fired two rounds of heavy gunfire. after that paramedics rolled up and took four possible hostages to various hospitals in the sydney area. there are also reports this morning from australian news outlets that two people were killed. three are in serious condition. we're continuing to monitor that. it remains unclear if one of those killed was the gunman. we understand that one of the people that were injured was an

australian police officer. but it appears that many hostages are doing okay. as you mentioned, at least 15 according to australian news media outlets made it okay. we also understand that area hospitals were briefed by police to be prepared. 17 hours, police had been trying to contact what was believed to be the lone gunman, the 50-year-old man. he is described as a cleric. several media outlets say he was known to australian police. he had an extensive criminal history including several charges of indecent and sexual assaults and being an excessry to murder -- accessory of murder to his ex-wife. there are reports that there were explosive devices in the cafe and around central sydney. we've seen people in bomb squad gear near the cafe. it remains unclear if the reports are true. as we've been doing throughout the morning, we'll continue to follow the situation and update

week's storm is estimated at $16 million in sonoma county alone. and that damage estimate is expected to climb much higher with the new round of rain this week. tomorrow sonoma county supervisors are expected to extend the local emergency declared last thursday for another 30 days. that move is designed to provide disaster aid for homeowners and businesses hit hard by the big storm. the city of san francisco has reached a settlement in the case of a patient who was found dead in a stairwell at san francisco general hospital. the city has agreed to pay 2.9 million to settle a claim filed by lynn spaulding's family. she was a patient at sf general when she went missing last december. her body was discovered 17 days later. the san francisco city attorney's office says the agreement will bring resolution without the heartache of litigation. 8:10.

8:13. if you will be flying out of sfo today expect more flight cancellations and delays due to the weather. in just the past 30 minute, sfo told us they are seeing delays of an hour and 50 minutes. delays are expected to last until 1:00 tonight. 80 flights have been canceled so far this morning. that is expected to grow throughout the day. last thursday, 250 flights at sfo were canceled due to the rain and strong winds. there were some flight delays at oakland and san jose airports last week. though that's not the case this morning. still -- especially at sfo, you are advised to check with your airline before heading out to the airport. restaurant workers are back on the job this morning after a two-day strike at san francisco international airport last thursday and friday. they say they walked off the job over concerns about job security and healthcare. the walkout shut down or at least impacted most of the

meeting was canceled when hundreds of demonstrators said they planned to attend. they are upset about the berkeley police response to recent protest esover the deaths of michael brown and eric garner. that city council meeting is set for 7:00 p.m. at longfellow middle school auditorium on derby street. the san jose police department says it's reviewing some controversial twitter posts by one of its officers. the posts were reaction to the recent protests against the police killings of unarmed african-american men. now, officer phillip white tweeted, and i'm quoting, if anyone feels they can't breathe or their lives matter, i will be at the movies tonight, off duty carrying my gun. another tweet read, threaten mean or my family and i will use my god-given and law- appointed right and duty to kill you. these tweets have since been removed. the police department says it's investigating the officer's

protest that went too far. reaction this morning to effigies of african-americans hung from the uc berkeley campus. pam cook is in the studio with more. >> life-sized cardboard cutouts of people who were lynched in the early 1900s were left hanging on the cal campus over the weekend. now, ktvu news has decided not to show the images because of the graphic nature. but they went up in the middle of protests in berkeley, oakland and other parts of the bay area as well as across the country after the recent grand jury decisions in the deaths of michael brown and eric garner. now, a bay area collective of artists released a statement taking responsibility for the installation. they say they are apologizing to black americans who felt further attacked by their work. however, the group also says, for those who think these images depict crimes and attitudes too distasteful to be

an inch and a quart ermt. the heaviest rain went to the east. there is a lot more to go. it's going to be a cloudy, cold day, breezy and rainy off and on. mill valley, 1.50, redwood shores 1.50. pleasanton danville, 1 inch, the san francisco .92. a couple reports saying it's let up. oakland airport and downtown an inch. petaluma, .87. there might be more where you are. about .50 to 1.50. there's three systems. today is one, tuesday night into wednesday will be another one. final one on friday. the one on friday may favor areas to the north more than us. but it looks like rain will move into the area. coverage isn't as intense but it's starting to pick up for areas. santa cruz mountains i know over .50. so cal, it looks like things are lightening up. not as much out towards the east bay, even though some areas have some rain. parts of brentwood, antioch has had over an inch of rain.

freely. once up get off, you make a left on broadway from 6th. several protesters have chained themselves around the flagpole. actually, one has climbed the flagpole, if you can see. he's now on that flagpole on top until this protest is over. i did speak with an organizer just moments ago saying that they are doing this for four hours and 28 minutes today. so it started about an hour ago. roughly around noontime is when it is expected to be over. the significance of this has to deal with both of the -- of the people killed. every 28 minutes, they cite, that an half am person is killed in the streets of this country. so again, protesters have been out here. they are on 6th and broad bay. at 7th. and they will be here for at least noontime unless police step in. they are also planning another demonstration tonight 5:00 p.m.
