bridge, when it's wet like this, it's no fun. those are heavy showers coming down. there is a back edge to this system. they are moving out of the area, and as it does, we are going to start to get a break. but not before the afternoon commute gets wacked and that's what is happening now. so, best thing is, i think people are getting used to the rain. that massive storm we had last people, this would have been a much, much bigger deal if that other storm hadn't showed up. >> you know the initial rain washed out all the oil and grime. so it was really dangerous. since we had so much rain the last few days, are the roads cleaner now? >> that helps a little bit. the hydroplaning is an issue in the north bay. people are just, i'm driving better. we are all driving better because we are getting hit time and time again. more showers tonight and then a break for tomorrow morning. when i come back, we'll lay out the plan for more possible showers. >> slow down and give a lot of space to the person in front of you. >> that's exactly it.

get those tire tracks in front of you. >> thanks, bill. the north bay is getting hit again right now and rain overnight caused even more flooding and rob roth is live with that part of the story. rob. >> for most of the day, it was dry. then two hours ago, it started coming down and it is still coming down pretty steadily. here, all eyes are on this marsh, which runs through the main drag. it flooded overnight and sent unwelcomed water into businesses across the street. >> the nail salon had to close today. >> i'm so sad. >> the owner and his employees could clean up. this is what it looks like earlier this morning. 2 to 4 inches fell on marin county overnight, causing 2 feet of water to pool around city hall. several inches invaded the small businesses across tiberon

boulevard. the catering business took on water. >> wouldn't it be great if nature could provide so we have just enough watt where water whether we need it? >> a high tide and it just spilled over. >> we had so much rain fall in such a short amount of time. a couple hours, and that marsh receives all of the runoff from the hillside surrounding hillsides. so, it filled it up quickly and had no place to go. >> this afternoon maintenance workers were clearing out over grown brush and debris from the marsh to keep the drainage canal clear. >> make sure all their drainages are clean and they don't fill up with leaves and they can drain properly. so that if they start to get excess runoff, it has a place to go. >> you think it will be okay? >> yeah. >> coming up at 6:00, the heavy rains also weakened a hillside and sent a sea of mud cascading down the backyard of

a home on vaneto drive, the inspectors came out to assess the safety of the area. that's at 6:00, but the fire department doesn't anticipate anymore problems from this marsh because it is low tide and so far, it is holding its own. frank. >> rob, we'll see you at 6:00. thank you, rob. big tree on a saturated hillside caused some big traffic problems today for drivers on interstate 280 in south san francisco. the tree was 40 feet tall and it fell over about 12:30 this afternoon on to the southbound lanes of 280 just past the westborrow boulevard. the chp says no one was injured. three lanes were blocked and traffic backed up for miles. a caltrans crew eventually cut up the tree and all the limbs were reopened about 2:00. >> further south, highway 17 is back open tonight after a tree fell and took out power lines. both directions of traffic were shut down. about 4:30, southbound traffic was stopped at the summit.

northbound traffic was stopped at sugar loaf road. crews cleared the tree to the side of the road. at 6:00 a.m., and traffic was flowing freely by 7:30, and took out the power to nearby homes. >> it was in bed and woke me up. i thought i heard it on my roof, thank goodness it wasn't. >> this type of thing happens all the time and that's life in the mountains. sandbags have been in high demand as people prepare for the next storm. so much so, they may be hard to find. san francisco department of public works gave away 14,000 sandbags during the last two storms. dpw gave away 200 in ten minutes. the distributor later ran out and the city had to buy more sandbags from lowes. be sure to stay with us, ktvu.com and mobile ktvu. give you the latest storm tracker 2. >> police say a bomb threat today at a high school was actually a hoax. and now they want to find out who is behind it. the threat was calledded in

just after 10:00 this morning to the high school, which is at ashby avenue. students, teachers, and staff were evacuated from the campus and as a precaution, a robo call went out to nearby people telling them to stay inside their homes. investigators say the caller said that there were several bombs and gave the school just minutes to react. school received phone call, a telephone bomb threat. the caller, a male, stated that within 20 minutes, bombs will be going off. >> law enforcement and k-9 units from several agencies searched the entire campus before determining the bomb threat had no merit. students were allowed back into their classrooms at 1:30 this afternoon. >> there has been a significant development in the missing persons case of a nine month old pregnant woman from sacramento. police say the vehicle of missing 20-year-old, aubrey andrews was found in elk grove

last night and inside the car, they discovered a woman's body, but as of now, police have not yet identified that body. >> andrew's went missing more than a week ago. police say she was distraught when she drove away from her home. her prius was found in a wal- mart parking lot about 4 miles from her house. police say there are no obvious signs of foul play involving the body found inside the car. they also say investigators are still treating her disappearance as a missing persons case. australians are coming to terms with their deep grief in the wake of the hostage taking and shooting at a sidney cafe. a tv anchor broke down as she learned she knew one of the two hostages killed in the siege. just finding out. katrina dawson was the sister of a prominent -- >> a sister of one of channel

back now to our storm coverage. want to bring back our chief meteorologist, bill martin. you are showing us the storm tracker. green and yellow pretty much everywhere. it is blocking the afternoon commute. if you are waiting for folks to get home, they will be slow getting there. rain fall accumulations, pardon me, over the last 24 hours have been impressive. in rain fall, now is impressive. so, it's going to continue to add to these totals, which in many cases, are well over 200% of average. 250% in san jose. there's the system i'm tracking. it's a nice looking weather system. this goes all the way through southern california. southbound in santa barbara area, here's where we stand right now. you can see the showers heaviest now, pretty much out here in the liver more valley, over here towards the tri valley area. come in close.

this is slowing you down. this is just not an easy commute. in hayward and oakland, you are getting heavy rain. maybe a half inch an hour, especially the cell moving into san mateo right now. that is significant rain fall. the other shot, we've seen heavy rain over the last couple of days. there's a back edge to this. it's going to push through in the next few hours, but not before we are seeing flood. there's an urban and small stream advisory north up into the santa rosa area and the marin county area. storm reports, this is tiberon. flooding there, and these don't give you exactly where it is. flooding out of the station. a little bit of flooding, which is all to be expected, considering how saturated the ground is. as we move forward, there's some rain fall accumulations forecast for the next 12 hours and over an inch in some places. the computer model does this, as we go into tonight and you can see at 10:00 tonight, you

see the showers widely scattered. it is starting to break off. the heaviest stuff looks like it's going through right now. there will be periods of heavy rain after that. right in the afternoon commute is the last thing you need. wednesday morning, and you have some showers still lingering. especially out towards fremont and san mateo area. for the most part, kind of dry. there's your wednesday 8:00 a.m. and we push forward and you'll see temperatures start to warm up a little bit over where they were. upper 50s tomorrow. snow levels are low in the mountains. winter weather advisory. and we continue tomorrow with more scattered showers. i showed you in the morning. a chance shower on friday. a thing to note, everything coming after this doesn't look like much. looks not well organized, not like it's going to be a big pop. app good dose of rain. we are getting some now. around the bay area, and even more in the north bay.

where the team is giving back this holiday season. joe. >> guys, let's talk winter sports a little bit. it's called the holiday assist problem. as long as the sharks have been here, they have been doing this. 40 families helped selected by the san jose unified school district and the sharks foundation, they will have an early christmas. all kinds of anticipation right now. the families will have a christmas right now. they are enjoying a christmas dinner. earlier, some got to meet memberrings of the sharks who have adopted those families and have gone out and bought gifts for the family who got on the ice for the first time after meeting their players. others enjoyed crafts and it's just a great evening that the sharks have established as a tradition. right now the folks are eating, but they will be down opening presents a very short time from now. we want to bring in one of the sharks players, and alex, let me ask you about this program and why it's something that is

a house of learning turnedded into a house of unspeakable horror. that's how secretary of state, john kerry, is a describe ago deadly taliban attack at an elite taliban school. most were children, some as young as 12 years old. the militants fired at anyone they could find. some children were found hiding under benches and were shot. others were in classrooms. some survivors say they heard the gunman coming to kill them as they hid under their desks. more on the deadly attack. >> as emergency crews rushed to the school, students described how it went down. >> we saw six people climbing the wall. we thought it must be the kids playing some game. but then we saw a lot of guns with them. >> guns and bombs, which they strapped to their bodies.

as army commandos came in, they found the attackers had slaughtered children and teens. at a nearby hospital, a chaotic scene as workers stacked cough fellowships coffins and survivors recounted the horror. >> we hid under the desks. they shot dead our teacher and burned her. >> this young man began to talk about how the attackers shot a toddler in front of him. it was too much. a taliban spokesman claims this is a revenge attack. you see e the school is next to a military camp. earlier this year, troops launched an operation in nearby north waziristan to rule out militants. the government says pakistan's prime minister will continue the operation until it banishes terrorism. little comfort, no doubt. for the mothers and fathers who

found their children's names on the lists at the hospitals. or for the ones still waiting for word. >> so far, they can't find my son. dead or alive. >> pakistani troops stormed the school and after a six-hour siege, the taliban attackers including three suicide bombers were killed. the santa clara board of supervisors discussed new incentives improving the response times in the san jose fire department under the contract with the department. since february, the county has withheld making payments to the city saying that san jose fire breeched the contract because of its slow response times. under this new agreement, payments resume if emergency response times are met three months in a row. the department would also receive back payments if they can stretch that to six months. the issue is also on the agenda of san jose's city council meeting today. >> she found her son stabbed to death on a san jose street.

guy, simply at the wrong place and wrong time. they have no idea why someone would attack him and kill him as he was crossing the street. in the quiet neighborhood in san jose, there's a home without a christmas tree, a patio without decorations, and a mother unable to celebrate like she had in years passed. >> it's hard to believe that he's not coming through that door anymore. and that's the thing that is the hardest for me. here it is the holidays, and tony is not coming back. >> a void she felt since january 11 when she saw her son, anthony lee thompson, lying on the sidewalk of willow glenn way outside her home. >> i had to convince myself that that's him laying there on the ground. but it's still hard. it's still hard. >> police found the 46-year-old stabbed to death. sometime around 1:30 in the

morning. groceries for his mother by his side. hardly any witnesses. a motive unclear for san jose police homicide detectives. >> a case like this, where you have no leads, you have nothing to follow up on make it is frustrating and difficult. >> what makes it more difficult, they don't know why someone would target thompson. once recognized for his volunteer work, who was active in his church. >> every step we went back on tony, it was like wow, this guy is really great guy. he is out there, he is helping his mother. he is helping the community. >> it's just as baffling for kathy jackson. her faith, family, and friends are keeping her strong. her wish for closure and justice and to spare anyone else the same heart ache, especially this time of year. >> we miss him terribly. i miss my son. my son, my youngest son misses him. his nephew misses him.

>> and police are hoping the story will generate some leads back out here live, they say this street is a mayor thorofair and they hope anyone that has information with come forward and call police. they say anything helps. >> can't imagine what the mother there is going through. let's hope this works and they find a suspect. aznes smith, thank you. an unexpected discovery, human remains. how they got there, tonight, the rains were found sunday along booker creek road. it appears the remains had been there for a year. no information about the gender, age, or identity. there's new information now about a man hunt in pennsylvania for a mass murder suspect. tonight, the search for 35-year- old, bradley william stone is over. authorities in montgomery county say they found his body in the woods near his home in the suburbs of philadelphia. authorities say it appears that

he died of what they called self-inflicted cutting wounds to the center of his body. stone is suspected of killing his ex-wife and five of her relatives. the attacks happened early yesterday morning in three homes just a few miles apart and may have stemmed from a custody dispute from his ex- wife over their kids. >> tonight, 2 investigates found fields could pose a serious health risk. now a bay area lawmaker wants to find out once and for all. jerry hill is sponsoring a bill that would mandate a scientific study on the synthetic turf fields and cancer. ktvu's melanie woodrow is here to explain. melanie. >> reporter: gasia, we are talking about fields made from bits of ground up recycled tires. the rubber contains potentially toxic chemicals that some athletes worry could be linked to cancer. there have been crumb rubber studies in the past, but not looked directly at all of the

health risks to athletes. jerry hill says he was startled by dozens of reports from athletes who say they believe they developed cancer after playing on these types of fields. senator hill's bill would require a division to conduct a new study to look specifically at the potential health dangers. >> we don't want to be at the end of date in the same position we are today and not knowing. we want this to be conclusive. we have a responsibility to make sure that our children are not harmed by the fields that they play on. >> a previous study concluded crumb rubber did not pose a serious public health risk, but there were gaps in the research. tonight at 10:00, we'll tell you how senator hill's bill aims to fill the gaps and answer some of the questions directly, and what could happen to the new fields that are currently being installed in san francisco. in the newsroom, ktvu channel 2

a deadly accident today backed up traffic along the bay bridge. the highway patrol closed the westbound off ramp about 2:30 this afternoon. that came after a chase. the motorcycle had no license plate. the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at san francisco general hospital a short time later and tonight has not yet been identified. the ramp reopened shortly before 5:00 this evening. >> been busted for bad behavior, agents with california's department of alcoholic beverage control

posted an indefinite suspension order in san jose. that bar is near the corner of north 13th and east mission street north of downtown investigators followed up on complaints on people in the neighborhood and found multiple violations. >> no alcohol can be sold or served for at least one year and the current owner of the license dislocation has to transfer the license to somebody else. >> investigators say the bar has multiple violations, including a legal drug sale and employees at the bar would ask patrons to buy them drinks and accept them, which is illegal. a federal judge has ordered oakland city attorney to hand over dozens of disputed police department documents. the judge ruled an independent court appointed investigator can review the documents even though the city attorney claimed they were protected. the paperwork includes the oakland police department. this is the latest ruling tied

to the court ordered reforms that came as a result of the writers police corruption scandal. >> former florida governor, jeb bush, announced today he is taking steps toward a run for the white house. he said on twitter, quote, i'm excited to announce i will actively explore the possibility of running for president of the united states. bush said he made the decision after talking with the family, which includes two former presidents, his father, and brother, george w. bush. other candidates include fellow floridians, senator marco rubio and chris cristie. >> it turns out the death of robin williams had such a big impact on so many people, it was the fastest growing search request of the year. that's according to google. the company released its list of top searches today and robin williams suicide back in august set off global reaction, making it the top trending topic for the year. the company says a lot of people also googled the world cup. the ebola outbreak. the disappearance of malaysia

san francisco is in the running to host the olympic games. the u.s. olympic committee announced it will make a bid for the 2014 summer olympics. there are four cities in the running. san francisco, los angeles, boston, and washington, d.c. ktvu's noah walker is in redwood city where the mayors of those cities and the olympic committee met today. so noelle, is there a front runner today? >> reporter: if there is, they aren't saying who the front runner is. the olympics has to spotlight on whatever city hosted. in 2012, the summer games were in london, which isn't a city known for summer-like weather.

but it could happen again with foggy san francisco in the running. >> big news is that our board voted unanimously today to move forward with a bid from united states for the 2024 summer olympic games. >> san francisco is among four u.s. cities being considered by the u.s. olympic committee. >> we started with the request that the city has described their vision for themselves over the next ten, 20, 30 years so we could look at how the out limb pick games might fit into those plans and actually help accelerate some of those plans. >> this isn't the first time the city by the bay has tossed its hat in the ring. >> i think the olympics will be extraordinary for the region and for san francisco. >> in 2006, then mayor, gavin newsome spoke, but the uncertainty of the time caused the city to withdraw its name and wait for better timing. if that time is now, the 49ers

will play a key role this time around. the committee now likes existing venues. >> what the city is trying to do is make this process more cost effective, more efficient, and they want to see bids that hair monoize the long-term plans of the city with the olympic games. >> one thing san francisco could have going against it, the political climate. recent protests could be seen as a negative. if the committee is leaning toward one city, it is not tipping its hand. so the committee says they will make a decision and announce that decision in january. frank. >> well, was there a reason why the olympic committee decided to put a city up for bid? they didn't have to do that. >> no, they didn't. and they declined to do so in the past. they said really, they have four good bids right now. they also said that the members of the international olympic committee have been encouraging them to put a city forward. you know, the last time the u.s. hosted a summer olympics,

have set in. if you have never done the tour at alcatraz, you'll hear a lot about those three guys. it's a fascinating story. >> that is one of the coolest things i have ever done is visit alcatraz. wouldn't that be something if they did make it? let's bring in our chief meteorologist. you've been to alcatraz, right? >> the way they went was tougher, because it goes, we swam from the island to the park. but they were swimming north, which would make it tougher. that's all that stuff coming out of the delta, so the current is five times as strong there. so had they gone the other way, they didn't want to go to the city and get busted, but they would have made it for sure. >> how hard was that swim? >> it wasn't too hard. you can get it done in 30 or 40 minutes. >> no, you can get it done. >> it's not as bad as you think. i knew i would get that after 20 years. >> that's awesome. >> so, you go outside right now. we have rain showers scattered throughout the bay area.

the showers are going to continue through the evening hours. there's the system, it's a nice looking one. what you notice s the back edge. the back edge is like right here. so, more showers, but notice how widely scattered, not as organized and that's the thing. the rain is really right on the afternoon commute. take a look at that. boy, it's coming down. and coming close, we'll do a little glide and you can see concord, getting heavy showers right now. you're getting heavy showers in walnut creek. out in martinez, now we'll slide south a little bit. danville, san ramone. this is the windshield wipers on full between san ramone and walnut creek. it's slow going and down here, this is san mateo bridge, slow going there as well. the winds have died down, which is nice. look at this rain. this stuff is coming in redwood city as we speak. belmont, san mateo, it's coming down hard. and san francisco down to the approach to the bay bridge, that's heavy rain. heavier rain towards the beach and back it out.

so it's raining out there. the heaviest stuff is going through. i mentioned the winds, not as strong as they were this morning. we had gusts to 30 miles per hour this morning. those gusts have since died down. the model, let's take it through a few days. this is a woodly scattered showers. pretty doable. and then the afternoon, maybe a few sprinkles. but tomorrow starts off with a few sprinkles and then done. as we get into thursday and thursday morning looks fine. valley fog will be an issue thursday morning. thursday afternoon, so thursday is a nice break. and friday, check this out, something comes in, but that's not a big deal. you'll see rain drops on the five-day forecast, but nothing to change your plans about. sot biggest rain, really, is right now. and what we have already seen. after this, after the next two hours or so, it is going to come down. we'll get a break. the small flood advisory will be dropped around 9:00. and we'll get on with our business as usual. and the weekend at this point, as you can see, doesn't look doo bad. it looks dry for your saturday

the san francisco board of supervisors is meeting today and could offer a settlement to a family of a patient that was found in a stairwell. a patient at sf general when she went missing. her body was discovered 17 days later. the almost $3 million settlement would spare the family's feelings. >> it avoids retracted litigation that causes them to relive and relive the loss of their mother. >> harris said in order to negotiate the settlement, he had to work around the current $250,000 cap on medical malpractice awards and the doctrine that law enforcement agencies are immuned from being prosecuted for some mistakes.

a federal jury in oakland today handed apple a major victory in its antideed of trust lawsuit over ipod music. the class action lawsuit accused apple of suppressing competition and trying to secure a monopoly with its itunes 7.0 for ipods sold from 2006 through 2009. after only a few hours of deliberations, jurors unanimously decided that the software upgrade was a genuine product improvement and therefore did not violate any antitrust laws. companies cannot be penalized for enhancing their products. a verdict could have cost the company as much as a billion dollars. >> now to our continuing drought coverage. we are still a long way from ending the drought here in california. in fact, according to a new analysis, it will take a whole lot more rain to recover from the drought. reservoirs and the sacramento and san joaquin river basins are trillions of gallons below

seasonal levels. california needs to get $11 trillion-gallons of rain to end the drought and the drought was costing the state money. just over $2 billion in losses this year alone. and according to the satellite data, snow pack this year is only half of what was estimated. just take a look at this time lapse video from the nasa satellite of the basin. it shows how the 2014 snow pack was one of the three lowest on record and the worst since 1977. the researchers are repeating what our own chief meteorologist, bill martin, has been telling us for years and did is going to take years to get this drought, the drought of this severity and likely take many more storms and years to get out of it. >> now at 6:00, the umbrellas are back out tonight as yet another storm moves in. our chief meteorologist is tracking the rain and we'll have an update on how much we could get tonight. as the rain continues to
