is tracking this latest storm. >> the rain coming today, just in time for the afternoon commute. it was a nice morning, remember? it was dry when you left for work. it was dry at lunchtime and somewhere around 00it lit up. and it really is having an impact on that commute. here's the current radar. here's some of the road down there by berkeley. you can see the headlights coming towards you. it's barely moving. there are traffic issues out there. the rain continues. the radar i'll show you what we have. we have tons of showers in the north bay. urban and small stream flooding, now they extended into freemonte. flood advisory, it will be dropped by, you know, the next few hours or so, but not until this weather system goes through. look out on the peninsula. heavy showers showing up throughout the bay area, take a look here in san francisco, and the marin county. we had that small stream flood advisory, we are getting reports of, let's go over here.

reports of some small street flooding. out by point ray station, marin county getting hit hard. that's the good news, showers are beginning to die down a little bit, or will begin to die down, but not before the afternoon commute made a complete mess up. when i com back, more showers behind this main front that is moving through right now. we'll show you what you can expect as we head into tomorrow and the next day. >> rain is certainly good news, but it is also causing problems across the bay area. look at santa rosa this afternoon where a large tree fell on highway 12. it happened east of the dutton avenue ramp and the tree narrowly missed. caltrans and the fire department managed to cut the tree up and haul it away in about an hour. >> highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains is back open tonight after a tree fell, shutting down all lanes of traffic. the highway patrol says they received a report just before 4:00 this morning and a large tree blocking all lanes.

it took crews two hours to remove that tree and traffic was flowing begin by 7:30. the downed tree knocked out power to nearby homes. >> i was in bed and it woke me up. i thought i heard it on my roof, but thank goodness it wasn't. >> the chp says two more large trees fell nearby along so cal san jose road earlier this morning, but were cleared shortly after that. >> and we will continue to monitor this latest band of wet weather, now moving through the bay area. we'll keep an eye out on any problem spots and check back in with bill for a look at what's coming our way later this week. >> the berkeley city council is expected to get an earful tonight on the city's response to recent antipolice protests. two meetings are being held and the first one is already underway. ktvu's claudine wong is at the auditorium at long fellow middle school and claudine, the meeting site was moved to that school, because they expect such large crowds tonight. >> that's right. when this meeting was canceled last week, the mayor said it

wasn't because of protesters to shut it down, it was more of a capacity issue. they moved it to the middle school and actually people are still coming in. they are bringing people down the hallway and bringing them into the meeting. we stepped outside, so we didn't disrupt. i want to give you a peek inside at what's happening now. what's happening tonight, two meetings. they will be making up last week's meeting and the regularly scheduled meeting tonight. so there was one scheduled at 5:30 and another at 7:00. now there were -- there was word from several groups that they would be protesting at this meeting. it came out here no to this area to see if they could have more capacity. 120 capacity at city hall and inside this auditorium, they can fit 300 people. there was supposedded to be a martha came from cal and marched a mile and a half to that area. i can tell you it is raining heavily. and then now we do have some of

the protesters that we are told were coming to drive in instead of doing that march showing up now. it is important to note this is going to be a long night. they had planned for it. they have paid a warning to the residents out here that there could be into the night, a big group of people out here and that things could get loud. right now, it is very calm. they are going through really just a general city council meeting minute, but then they will have the public discussion and that's where we do know there will be comment frs the community and specific groups. and the naacp was outside a little bit earlier, also making a speech, talking about changes they want to see. so, we are keeping an eye on this situation. there is still capacity, but it is getting more crowded. in the last five minutes, saw many more people and coming in with signs and so this meeting, there is the understanding that things could get a little more intense and there could be quite a few people showing up.

so we'll be here and keep an eye on it for you. >> we'll be covering it all night. more at 7:00 and on the 10:00 news. claudine wong, thank you. >> police want to know who is behind a bomb threat today at a high school. the threat was called in just after 10:00 this morning to the high school on ashby and central high schools. students, teachers, and staff members were evacuated from campus. as a precaution, a robo call went out from police to nearby residents telling them to stay inside their homes. investigators say the caller said there were multiple bombs and gave the school minutes to react. >> the school received phone call, telephone bomb threat. the caller, a male, stated that within 20 minutes, bombs will be going off. >> law enforcement and k-9 units from several agencies, searched the entire campus before determining the bomb threat had no merit. students were allowed back inside the classrooms around

1:30 this afternoon. the santa clara county sheriff's office is working to identify human remains found near highway 9 in the hills. the remains were found on sunday near booker creek road. authorities say it appears they had been there for about a year. so far, no information has been released on the person's gender or a possible cause of death. new at 6:00, controversial comments on social media. first, it was a san jose police officer, now it's an employee from nordstrom raising eyebrows with a facebook post. both of those posts involve the recent protest and debate over the shootings of unarmed black men. tweets, posts, and opinions can reach thousands of people in just a matter of seconds. and while some might say they are just exercising their freedom of speech, ktvu's ali is here and tells us companies and employers can be unforgiving of inappropriate posts. >> that's right, especially if those posts weigh in on a

controversial and polarizing topic like the issue of race and police and community relations. that's a topic that got a police officer in hot water with his department and it was the same topic that cost a nordstrom employee in portland his job. >> the profile picture on aaron hodge's personal facebook page shows him in his work environment with a rack of clothes behind him. his profile says he works at this store and it was his employer that faced a fire storm of criticism for this post on hodge's facebook page. quote, instead of slamming the police, i prefer a kenny fort approach. any time an unarmed black man is killed, you kill a decorated white officer on his doorstep in front of his family. someone took a screen shot of that post and it went viral. >> they were taking out that outrage against in order thrombosis. >> in order nordstrom. >> it can be closely watched and the decision of the company not to fire someone can be its

own story. >> eric goldman is codirector of the high-tech law institute at santa clara university law school. >> dozens, hundreds, possibly thousands of people have been fired for what they said on social media. it happens all the time. >> when it comes to our online persona, have we become inseparable? >> you are what you say you are. i think it is really difficult in this day and age to separate it. >> there are always people watching you. even from people from jobs, schools, you know, friends of family and all that. you know, that can really put you in a bad situation. >> goldman says government and employees and some union members do have some legal protections against being fired for what they say and write. most people are considered at will employees and can be fired for any reason by their employer, including controversial statements. >> we are accountable for our words. >> think before you post. >> when we post online, every post in the sense is a bet on

our job future. >> and as for the san jose police officer we mentioned earlier, his comments on twitter about recent protests got him pulled off patrol, placed on administrative leave and under investigation by his department. >> ali, thank you. : it is a deal that has been ten years in the making. late this afternoon, san francisco, san bruno, and daly city officials signed off a historic agreement to share water supplies and storage space for that water. ktvu's david stevenson has the details on what it means for water customers. >> water officials told us this plan should over time provide enough water for the region to weather a drought. >> the $113 million deal was done as san francisco received another round of much-needed rain fall. >> so, with that, i think we have a deal. >> the city's public utilities commission, san bruno, daily city, and the california water

services company today signed off on a plan that has been a decade in the works. the goal is to diversify the water supply for drought years or disasters. sell those cities bountiful reservoir water during wet years so those peninsula cities can use rain fall to build up their supplies for drought years. >> during wet years, we are asking them to use more water that we have available. >> excess water that would otherwise be released into the river. another benefit for all the cities is that a massive underground aquafir will get to fill up with rainwater. >> this is equivalent to crystal springs, so it was about 20 billion-gallons of water. >> the largest city gets about 45% of its water from ground water wells and the rest. >> we can't always rely on that. >> pat says the deal is

the result out there, a traffic jam in emeryville. it is slow going in both directions, just for perspective here. the brake lights, those folks are heading in the north correction toward richmond. the headlights coming toward us are heading toward the mcarthur maze and the bay bridge. obviously, we need all this rain. but they are trying to clean up from the last storm. and ktvu's rob roth went to one home where a wall of mud filled up a backyard swimming pool. >> the combination of too much rain and saturated ground sent a muddy mess cascading down the hillside. the swimming pool caught most of it, but the mud did break a window and pour into the house. as building inspectors came do have a look this morning, mud was oozing down the front of the house. the homeowner didn't want to appear on camera, but told ktvu his house was badly damaged. but the inspector said the homeowner can stay in the house.

>> it's safe for them to access their house. they can't access it from the back. they have a cleanup crew here. >> maintenance workers were clearing out debris to keep the drainage canal clear. the marsh flooded late last night, sending water across the boulevard into several small businesses. this nail salon had to close for the day so employees could clean up. >> residents also said the recent storms have been especially intense. >> i'm from san diego and i have never seen so much rain in the last week, week and a half. so, it's just crazy. >> it's much better than draft. our trees are doing wonderful. >> with the rainy season, there are precautions homeowners are being advised to take. >> make sure all their drainages are clean and they don't fill up with leaves and they can drain properly so if they get excess runoff, it has a place to go. >> the fire department doesn't

anticipate anything from this storm. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. >> whooping cough is on the rise, roughly 10,000 californians have contracted the disease so far this year. it is the largest outbreak the state has seen in nearly 70 years. whooping cough is an infectious respiratory disease known for its unique sounding cough. symptoms vary by age, but coughing can be severe enough to cause vomiting or death. students can be vaccinated as young as six weeks old. >> every four years, we see a peek and this year has been a pronounced peek in the number of cases that we are seeing statewide. >> this year, 62% of californians who are hospitalized with the disease were less than 4 months old. the san jose sharks are getting into the holiday spirit this evening with a party for families in need. ktvu's joe fonzi is live with how the team is giving back. joe. >> reporter: julie, things are

starting to pick up behind me because it's getting time to open the presents. it's called the holiday assist program. the sharks have been doing this as long as they have been here in san jose. shark players take money out of their own pockets to make sure 40 under served families have a nice early christmas here tonight. and this is a guy that i have seen with a real game face. i saw a soft, warm, fuzzy side for the first time tonight. this is something you take great enjoyment in. >> my wife and i and our family love this time of year. this is the time of year when a lot of families, you know, are in need and it is putting smiles on the kids faces and love and joy into this time. for us, it digs down deep with us and we were fortunate enough to meet a great family tonight. it's been fun so far. >> i know you got to meet the lopez family for the first time and some of the kids got to be on the ice for the first time. tell us about them.

all know it's cold year round, but especially during the winter months. the u.s. coast guard held a demonstration of cold water safety. in other words, what do you do if you fall in? experts caution the first thing to watch out for is an involuntary gasp reflex when you hit the water. after that, the recommendation is to kind of curl up to conserve heat. >> your hand, cross them over your chest. bring your knees and kneesings up and touch your elbows and cross your ankles. >> civilian volunteers tried the procedure as well as a demonstration of how to stay warm while floating in a group. the volunteers said they were stunned at how cold the water felt and how quickly it affected them physically. well heavy rain falling all around the bay area right now. just as bill told us it would. it came out with avengeance. >> it's coming down hard like you mentioned. right on the afternoon commute.

we are seeing it, it was not a big morning at all. it was dry until after lunch. and did is it is moving through the bay area. we're also seeing an urban small stream flood advisory that is included the rest of the bay area essentially. earlier, it was the north bay. that small flood advisory will be dropped as we get into the 9:00 hour. but that is not for a little while. so we are seeing heavy rain up here in vallejo. that is real heavy rain as you move up on 80. you are seeing american canyon with heavy rain. heavy rain out by oakland right now. you see that line going through and coming closer as alameda island. you are getting hit hard. everything is moving towards the north and east. mostly due east. and then down in san jose, heavy rain, get ready for it in san jose. you are seeing some heavy showers in the next hour or the next few minutes. los altos, getting heavy rain. so, as we point out, as julie

mentioned, the afternoon commute is getting wacked and we are getting used to it. we have had plenty the last week or so. lots of commutes and question in terms of the driving situation. tonight at 6:00, that system rolls through and rolls through very quickly. so, there will be scattered showers behind it, but the main line is pushing through quickly. as we go into tomorrow morning 1:00 a.m., some scattered showers and we go into 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, not bad, should be dry on the commute. and then we go into the afternoon and a few more scattered showers. this area looks like it wants to run down the coast tomorrow night. should miss the afternoon commute. so, definitely drying out after about 9:00 tonight when things start to change around. so forecast highs tomorrow, you got lots of mid 50s, some upper 50s. forecast in the five-day forecast, drying out, but not completely. and there are enough to keep drops in the forecast, but really, we're experiencing the bulk of the rain right now.

mark is here now with sports. the best two teams in basketball are playing right now. >> impressing me during the commercial. they are playing without andrew, but they have won without him. the 16 game win streak is out on the road down in memphis, tennessee. although they are at halftime. the warriors down by 8. early on, they get off to a nice lead. andre with a steal and he puts it in the hands of seth currie who will make it happen by himself. but, vince carter just lights it up. he's in his 18th season in the nba. 3 for 3 on three's. the 20-0 run to start the second quarter for memphis. the team with the second best record in the western conference to the warriors.

clay thompson helps the warriors to get in the ball game. he fouled. called it a four-point play and we're at halftime. ready to start the third quarter with the warriors. some baseball stuff to talk about, if you have been keeping up with the winter meetings and all that. dodgers, complete makeover on their team and they will look a little bit more clean shaven come spring training. they have cut ties with ryan wilson. the former giant right there. they have designated him for assignment. he is owed $9.5 million guaranteed from the dodgers as their general manager said today, he is not one of our best relief options. and then the giants continue to lose players, michael morris had so many key hits with the regular season and in the post season, helped them win the nlcs with that home run and of course, had the game winning hit in game 7 of the world
