incredible. and that just tells you how much rain we've had in northern california and southern california. getting some snow but really the bay area and many areas along the coast taking more of the rain as the systems fall apart in the mountains. glenn .30. and light rain right now. san francisco, 29. oakland, .20. about .25 to about .50 covered most of it from last night into this morning. but since midnight, some areas with .10 of drizzle. so light rain, drizzle, some fog this morning. and there will be a break here for a while. and the south bay, east bay and cloudy in the north. the warm sector after that is advancing rapidly. and probably off and on most of the day. and even though a lot is not showing up. the air is saturated. and the radar beams going over it. but not all of it. parts of the east bay, san

francisco and now moving into the east bay. and that's going to give us some of that drizzle. and the next system will have more of a punch northward. and we are still looking for about .50 from tonight into tomorrow with heavier ams up towards the russian river and points north. and not done yet. 50s on the accidents some of the fog being reported as well. look for a mostly cloudy morning and then a break until the next system late tonight and tomorrow. splitting the difference, partly cloudy, drizzle, showers, some sun, breeze with a light warm-up with 60s. >> fog and drizzle this morning. yeah, that's right. could be affecting the commute. we also found out about a new crash on the upper deck of the bay bridge. westbound west of treasure island. but the toll plaza had been slowed down because the lights are on. so we had some slow traffic there. let's look around at the bridge traffic. and i don't see anything up there now. but as we have a picture of it here, i see flashing lights below and that looks more like

road construction. but on the upper deck and this is all we can see because of the drizzle, i don't see anything. but we will look at the east bend next time. and this is a look now at 880 north and southbound. the traffic is moving along well. and north and southbound interstate 880. and also looking at 280 in san jose. northbound 101 and 280 and 85 are off to a good start. driving through there, you can see the traffic is looking good. back to the desk. >> all right. thank you. u.s. officials have determined that north korea is responsible for the hack at that tack at sony pictures. an announce -- the hack aat the at sony pick -- hack attack at sony pictures. >> reporter: in hollywood, the screen writer has said it's an unprecedented attack on the most cherished principle, the director called the decision by the theater owners disgraceful.

but in tend, it seems that sony was indeed strong armed. most of the major theater chains announced that they would not show the film due to safety concerns. and the hackers got into sony picture's computer system and exposed documents and made terror threats because of the film "the interview." a comedy about the assassination of leader kim jong-un. and that led sony to cancel the release. and experts say the decision presents a threat to free speech. >> i think it's a blow to freedom of expression in our country and film industry. i don't like the precedent that you can stop the film if you don't like it. >> reporter: the major theater chains feared that families would bypass the box office for the remainder of the holiday season and that would would have impacted entertainment firms which have christmas releases. and sony has said there's no

further plans to release the film initially. in fact, when asked about it, they have no plans to release it. so it will be interesting to see what happens. we have retransaction hollywood. people taking to social media to criticize sony's decision to pull the interview from theaters. the actor tweeted out, wow, everyone caved. the hackers won. a victory for them. wow. we also heard from a politician, he responding to rob lowe says it was the terrorist who won and almost certainly the north korean dictatorship. this was an act of war. >> and a popular actor tweeted out, sad day for creative expression. and hashtagfeareatsthesoul. what do you think about sony's decision. join the conversation and we're going to share more comments

throughout morning. >> very interesting. a family on the peninsula back home after flood waters forced them to evacuate their mobile home park. and we are live now. tell us how last week's storm brought that community together. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well first want to show you what it looks like this morning. we are surrounded by sandbags and hoses and tubes out here. and a lot of the equipment used to get the water out is still laying here this morning and we are told the pumps are now working to help prevent this mobile home park from flooding again. now that family you referenced was finally able to go back and accept the night in their own home after living in a motel for five days. they were forced to evacuate last thursday and friday when flood waters rose to several feet high. and the mobile home park is prone to flooding because when there's heavy rain because it's in a low-lying area. and firefighters did have to cut power to the mobile homes

and the family lost their power tools and other belongs stored underneath their home and damaged by the flood water. and they lost all the food in the refrigerator. and the ordeal is stressful for the 10-year-old who was worried whether he would have a home and place to sleep. >> we have to move? or are we going to stay, is the water going to get any bigger? >> the hard part for me, my kids really worry about it. >> the water proof casings were installed yesterday to protect each home's power source and election resigningty was also restored. and the school with the help of the city council member is raising money to help the family and others impacted by the flooding. more than $14,000 has been raised on the go fund me site this morning in addition to other donations. we have been monitoring the site and we saw at least one additional donation post in the past couple hours and hopefully

there's more to come. >> thank you very much. time is now 6:07. police investigating the mysterious death of a woman found unconscious outside of a popular shopping mall. the 61-year-old woman was discovered last week. she had a head wound and she was found in the parking lot of the premium outlets and died on tuesday. and police haven't determine what led up to her death but they're search for you driver of a white four-door sedan that was seen leaving the area. the mother of 49er ray mcdonald is defending her son. yesterday the 49ers wasted no time in cutting the defensive lineman. and the announcement came just 45 minutes after police announced that he was at the center of another criminal investigation. and police searched his san jose home after a woman who is not his fiance claimed that he sexually assaulted her. and his mother spoke to us by phone from her florida home.

wrong house while he was drunk. police say the 24-year-old drew hatch was pounding on the sliding glass door of the house at 4:30 yesterday morning.

the people inside called 911 and seconds later, hatch smashed the glass door and walked inside. the homeowner told police he warned the intruder he had a gun but hatch walked into the family room and he was shot. >> right after my dad fired the shot, police broke in the front door because they were already enroute from my mom calling. and they arrested him on the spot. >> now police say hatch wasn't trying to steal anything but he was very intoxicated and just went to the wrong house. the homeowner who fired the shot is not being charged. hatch by the way was treated at the hospital and released. he put his heart into his holiday shop sog why is he behind bars? well, it was part of a scam. police say two men walked into a florida wal-mart tuesday to steal expensive toys. take a look. you can see one man fakes a heart attack to distract security and staff as the other pushed a full shopping cart

right out of the store. and then all of a sudden, the emergency was over. >> miracles occur around christmas. his heart was all better and he strolled out. >> well it didn't take police long to track down the suspects since both were caught on camera and had lengthy criminal records and wal-mart is reviewing the security after the fake arrest led to a real arrest. san jose city manager is resigning just a year after taking the job. he plans to leigh at the end of the month. now according to the san jose mercury news, he decided to resign after the city council met yesterday to talk about his performance. and they were reportedly planning to vote tomorrow to terminate his contract. the deputy city manager is expected to fill the job until a replacement is found. we have new information about the safety of 2,000 bolts and rod oscarsen the eastern span of the bay bridge. the san francisco chronicle

says a draft report says the bolts and rods are not in danger of failing and should stay in place. last year, 32 rods cracked and caltrans spent $45 million testing and securing the cracked rods. and the draft report is scheduled to be presented tomorrow. and speak of the bridge, the light sculpture on the western span will keep shining. they were first turned on last year and they were due to come down in march but the project sponsor says thanks to private donations and a deal with the bay area toll authority, they were able to save the show. and they'll have to remove it next year for maintenance and then they'll be permanantly reinstalled in early 2016. >> all right. sal, you don't mind takings to the bridge, do you? >> absolutely not. >> okay. >> you know, so any time i want

to bug the news room, he's sitting at his desk and i will say, james brown, and he starts doing the james brown and then all the writers look at us like, oh, brother. >> early in the morning. >> early in the morning. >> 4:35 a.m. now you know the story. >> yeah. take a look at what we have on the roads. and can we take to it the bridge, yes, we can. westbound bay bridge looking good. there was a crash reported inside the tunnel. not there. traffic is actually moving along okay into san francisco. but the toll plaza, there's the back-up. the metering lights are on and and wet on the lens. one day where you are going to need the umbrella. and i'll let steve explain. but driving-wise, may run into slow traffic as a result of the weather. and south bay where i keep watching and traffic is moving along well. 580 slow. 680 is slow but nowhere near as bad as it was yesterday after we had the crashes. and today just slow on southbound direction.

rain, drizzle and cloudy ask areas of fog showing up. although generally just a low cloud deck and the air is super saturated. and cloudy to the north and won't take long to get the rain going again. especially up towards lake county. and the system gets closer. and right now, hard to pick out. and right over the top since it's low-level stuff. and we have some over oakland and berkeley. and there's still plenty that's kind of flirting with san francisco. some of the rain in the next system will be focusing heavier to the north. still see rain down but decent totals around the russian river. so have to keep an eye on that for the friday system. and maybe an inch up towards lake county. and the system is back here. it won't be until late tonight or tomorrow. and 40s ask 50s. but a lot of 50s. and a decent breeze ahead of this. especially southeast and mountainview and turning towards sfo. not that strong. we expect that to pick up which

will give us a warmer pattern today. and 29 in tahoe. and the airport says clear on the 6:00 a.m. observation. and flurries up there. but quiet. and look for mostly cloudy skies. some sun breaks but farther south you go, a breeze picking up which will give you a slight warm-up, and light rain to the north and that will pick up late tonight into tomorrow. and areas of fog, humidity factors through the roof. and we will see rain takings into friday. and by friday night, gone one more system to the north on saturday. and i don't think it will affect most of us here. but wouldn't take much to get light rain. and then a break sunday through christmas eve. >> which is good because there's big travel time for people. >> and we need to dry out. >> be dry: people flying and driving. >> and could be a big system back east christmas week. >> okay. >> so that could affect flights. >> correct. this morning, the labor department announced claims for

first-time job benefits dropped last week. that's 6,000 fewer than the week before. it is in line with the number of associated with strong hiring. they expected claims to hold steady but the job market is volatile. just in time for christmas, amazon today announced the start of one-hour delivery on tens of thousands of items. right now it's only available for amazon prime members in manhattan but the retailer says the service called prime now will be expanded to other cities in the new year and amazon has been testing the service using bike messengers for weeks now. and the service will cost $7.99 per delivery. that's not bad. >> not bad. did you hear what happened in southern california? three people were killed, several more were hurt. and coming up in 15 minutes, this horrible tragic crash as people were leaving a christmas

welcome back. san francisco firefighters deliberately set a christmas tree on fire. they want you to see how fast it can burn. this one, it took 10 seconds. firefighters say you should keep a christmas tree really watered and keep eightway from candles and open flames. and they say don't leave the christmas tree lights on overnight. well we're hearing more about aerial drones. but there's a new underwater drone that's making big headlines. check this out. now this one looks like a shark. but it's really a high-tech navy drone. the underwater vehicle is called the ghost swimmer. it's about five feet long and it can dive 300 feet down. it swims just like a fish,

moves its tail fin. and the navy says it can possibly conduct surveillance missions in place of human divers. now to a true story of survival about a man and his dog separated in last week's big storm. once a week, steve and his dog daisy enjoy a free lunch at the church. well last wednesday, steve spent the day helping a friend with his boat. steve left daisy behind on his boat in richardson bay. when he returned the, boat was under water and daisy was gone. and then something unbelieverrable happened, a neighbor told steve that a wet shivering dog was spotted on the church steps. >> i cried for two days. i guess i'm crying right now because i'm really happy that i didn't lose daisy. >> boy, officials say daisy escaped the sinking boat, swam more than a mile and then walked another half mile before making to it the church steps

the east as well. santa rosa napa reported. and a day where we might get a little bit of sun. and then the next system late tonight and tomorrow and rainfall to the north will be decent again. but still looks to be about .50 to maybe an inch farther north. and around the bay area, about 95 p 95 to .50. partly cloudy, drizzle, light rain this morning. and a breeze out of the southeast. so a slight warm-up, fog, sal, and many reports of drizzle. and that means slow traffic as we look here at some of the commutes. we have kind of a big back-up at the bay bridge toll plaza. and an earlier crash on the bridge. and in fact, two cleared out of the way rather quickly and backed up to the maze. but i'm encouraged because i see the traffic moving through there, a normal clip. and this is about a 25 minute delay at the toll plaza. and looking at the commute here on interstate 880 north and southbound. the traffic is moderate.

and no major problems. and i'm looking at the valley and the road sensors are showing slow traffic on 580. and also 680. as far down as the southern end on the way to the grade. 6:33. back to the desk. >> thank you. we have brand new details about a deadly crash yesterday following a christmas concert at a church. three people have now died after a suspected drunk driver ran into a group of people leaving the christmas service last night. two of the victims were women in their 80s. and nine other people, a lot of them children, were also hurt. and some are in critical condition. and witnesses say a female driver ran a red light and then plowed into the pedestrians. she kept going and later crashed into another car. >> the vehicle struck a group of pedestrians which including 12 pedestrians, still aren't certain on the exact number. and collided head-on with a

vehicle traveling southbound on pacific coast highway. >> now that driver was take on the the hospital and now faces dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. the church stayed open so people could go inside and pray for the victims. u.s. officials have determined that north korea was responsible for the hack attack at sony pictures that led sony to cancel the release of the new film "the interview." an announcement may come as soon as today. and we have reaction. >> reporter: well, an economics triumph over free speech, that's the question a lot of people are asking this morning. and hollywood is reacting. they have been tweeting about this since yesterday. and writers, producer, actors saying they are saddened and angry. now we know that sony was strong armed into dropping the release of the new film, the interview. and that was because most of the major theater chains had

announced they would not show the movie. and hacker got into the computer system, exposed sensitive documents and made terror threats because the interview, a come i did is about the assassination of leader kim jong-un. and now we spoke to one movie goer who traveled to san francisco to see the film only to get turned away. >> drove and so about an hour and a half in the rain. some things that you don't joke around about. don't think it was one of the best topics to joke on. >> reporter: the major theater chains also feared the families would heed the hacker's warning and bypass the box office altogether for the remainder of the holiday season and that would have impacted firms like disney and universal which have christmas releases. and there are no further plans to release this film, the interview. back to you. >> all right. thank you. and sony's decision to cancer

gap between the police and protesters. oak oakland mayor and congresswoman lee took part in at the vent. it was held at oakland's bb memorial cathedral. and hundreds of people were there voicing frustrations about the justice system. congresswoman lee says she wants president barack obama to appoint a police czar. >> we have racial profiling legislation that we have penning. and the president has taken several executive actions and we need to go further. >> the mayor says oakland police have implementing reforms like uniform body cameras. and the number of officers wearing body cameras went from about 200 in 2010 up to 619 this year. and over that same time period, use of force incidents dropped by about 75%. happening today, part one of a holiday give away for thousands of low-income families in the south bay. we are at the sacred heart community service to tell us about the help that the

families will receive this week and next week. good morning. >> yeah, good morning to you. the good folks here are trying to make sure that families in need here in the community have a warm holiday meal and they'll be handing out boxes of food this morning. many of the boxes are already prepped and ready to go and filled with important items that you will need for the nice holiday meal. and they'll be handing out 3300 of these food boxes today to homeless and low income families and you can see here kind of what's inside. you have canned goods, eggs, you have rice, and you have fresh fruits and vegetables and of course most importantly, the bird right there. so you can have turkey there during the holidays. and very important work that they do here and i want to bring in the director of sacred heart. we appreciate you having us this morning and we are seeing a huge demand this year. and the demand has gone up. and what do you aattribute that to. >> this is one of the challenges that the economy is facing. when people are starting to get back to work and doing better,

their incomes are not picking up with the rise of the cost of living and particularly housing costs that soar in the community as the market just continues to shrink. and we are feeling a lot of folks doing better, starting to get back on their feet and increasing the minimum wage last year. and seeing that they're getting squeezed so they need to help to try to make ends meet. a couple hundred more folks this year than any other year. and we're hoping that it's going to pick up for them. >> and you talk about the registration, everyone watching video now of people who came last month and people line up just to register just to get their hand oscarsen the food boxes. and if nothing else, that should show what the need is in the community. talk to me about the feeling that the volunteers have, yourself and the other volunteers have when you're able to help somebody just put a meal on the table during the holidays, what does s that feeling like ? >> well, to be honest, a little bittersweet because we see so

many folks that continue to struggle but feel really great because of the response for the community. the financial donations and the support that. months and the volunteers that come in. and ready to share the blessings that they have for families not only to have a wonderful holiday meal and share some of the joys that they take for granted and. that's something that feels good that we can do something about the problems, not just worry. >> reporter: and important to point out here that the food doesn't just appear out of thin air. there's food you have to buy and that's due to donations and you always need the help. >> absolutely. >> reporter: and again, this year. so the doors open at 9:00 this morning. and again, you will have a lot of families who will be coming down here. and they have appointments so coming down and they'll be able to pick up their boxes. and while they are giving away food today and tomorrow, next week, pam, it's going to be toys. doing a big toy give away. for kids to make sure they have

firefighters are mopping up at a house fire. we are told it started about 4:30 this morning. this is near 55th. not far from the oakland city line. fire crews say the cause appears to be holiday candles that were left burning overnight. the woman who lives there woke up to find her bedroom engulfed in flames. >> this time of year, especially candles, christmas trees, those are the cause of a lot of fires. and also chimneys with people lighting the fireplaces that haven't been maintained properly. those are very dangerous this time of year. >> now the woman who livers there got out safely. and crews say her cat need the

fire. and the home is now uninhabitable and streets remain closed right now. one family on the peninsula is back home after flooding forced them and other families to evacuate their mobile home park. and the community though is coming together to help them out. and what does it look like now? still flooded? >> reporter: no, it's not. and we have seen just a few sprinkles out here this morning but this is a community that's prone to flooding when there's heavy rain and that's because it's in a low-lying area. but what you can see out here is some of the equipment that was used to get the water out. it's still out here this morning and many who live here were just able to go back home after being out of their homes for nearly a week. now the family was one of nearly a dozen families forced to evacuate last thursday and friday when flood waters got to several feet high. and firefighters had to cut power to mobile homes and their 10-year-old son worried about

where he was going the sleep. the family of five ended up moving to a motel before finally being able to return last night. >> right now, we are home. that's our big happiness right now. and my kids happy too. when they have their place to sleep, happy to be home. >> reporter: new water proof casings were installed yesterday to protect each home's power source. and electricity also restored and pumps now working to help prevent the park from flooding again. and his school in partnership with the councilmember is raising money to help some of those impact bid flooding. right now, more than $14,000 has been raised this morning including one contribution in just the last hour that we saw on the site. back to you. >> that's great they have raised so much money for them. thank you. you've heard the big news, president barack obama wants

a gunman still on the loose after shooting a tv weatherman in texas. the weatherman patrick crawford here was leaving the station when someone approached his car. and they exchanged words and then the gunman shot him three times and ran away. the weatherman managed to drive away and get some help down the road. we're told he's in stable condition. and he was shot in the shoulder and abdomen. investigators don't believe he knows that shooter. security will be very tight this morning as the surviving

boston marathon bombing suspect heads to court for his final pretile hearing. and it will be the 21-year- old's first court appearance since july 2013. he faces a possible death sentence if quicked in the bombing that killed three people and injured more than 260 others. the trial is scheduled to begin on january 5th. uber is promising to focus on rider safety as it faces a lawsuit over the background checks of drivers. uber's head says they plan to consider new ways to screen out drivers using technology that could include pollly graphic tests. and san francisco's lawsuit which was filedded last week claims uber has exaggerated how thoracic relit screens drivers. and this comes as a driver in massachusetts is facing charges of rape and kidnapping. however, company records indicate he did pass several background checks at the federal, state and local
