how needy families in the south bay are getting a helping hand. it's part of an annual holiday project. alex will tell you about that live. and the storm cleanup goes on of a record-breaking rain. how the stormy weather is bringing communities together. today. a little bit of drizzle. there are a few breaks in the clouds. we have another system that will be here late tonight, tomorrow. but i will tell you, the drizzle and that system from last night continues to add up, sausalito, .60. san anselmo, sleepy hollow, .50. middletown, lake county, almost .50. union city, almost .25. same for dublin. about .25 to .50 pretty much was the norm last night. since mid night we've had .10 of drizzle. bay area rainfall, i would say we're doing very well. oakland now 194% of normal. san francisco 193% and san jose we're 254% of normal. system is already barreling into the north. that's kind of the warm sector. it will keep mostly cloudy skies to the north. some sunbreaks. there's still drizzle popping up. it looks like it's thin out a little bit. but from all the way to north bay even down to san jose, the radar beam doesn't pick it up. 50s on the temps.

a breeze has cranked up for a few. it's out of the southeast. it looks to be picking up 15, 20 miles an hour for some. today look for increasing clouds. mostly cloudy to the north. our system will arrive tonight. we'll have some updates on the rain totals expected over the in ex24 hours. 50s and 60s. looks like the drizzle is letting up. >> it's interesting that as the day -- as the rain continues, steve, people have actually been getting into fewer collisions. the very first day it rained, even drizzled, we had a lot more. today not quite as many. people are normalizing to these conditions. at the bay bridge toll plaza, it's not wet there right now. we had an earlier crash, a couple of them on the upper deck of the bay bridge. those are clear. the backup is just normal driving through this area. also looking at the san mateo bridge, it looks like there is a stalled vehicle, somewhere on the span and they are going to check on it now. we'll see what happens. westbound 92 traffic is getting busy and we'll let you know if that turns into a major thing

here. we're looking at the south bay and 85 and 101 and 280 are all showing signs of slowing into the west valley. sunnyvale and cupertino. but not major backups just yet. 7:04. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. u.s. officials are ready to blame north korea for the brazen and costly cyber attack at sony pictures that's ultimately led to the shutdown of its controversial new film "the interview." an announcement from u.s. investigators could come as soon as today. tara moriarty joins us live from walnut creek with reaction to all. this. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. a spokesperson for the national security council says that they are weighing their options, the u.s. officials, that is. we know that this is an unprecedented move to yank a film. a lot of folks in hollywood think the theaters shouldn't have been so quick to cave in. that is sort of the consensus in reading a lot of the

hollywood twitter accounts. now, in the end, sony pictures was strong armed into can'tling it because most of the chains announced they would not show the movie. hackers got into the sony pictures exposed sensitive documents and made terror threats because of "the interview." it is about the assassination of leader kim jung un. now, we asked people this morning if they thought sony should have buckled to north korea. how do you feel about that? >> just hearing it now. a little weird. you feel like they are taking a little bit of liberties away. if i gotta give up comedy for safety, i'm all right with that. >> reporter: the major theater chains also feared family was heed the hackers' warning and bypass the box office altogether for the remainder of the holiday season. that would have impacted entertainment firms like disney and universal. they have big christmas releases due out. sony said there are no further plans to release the film. a lot of people asked if it

would be released digitally. a lot of people say no matter what they are hell-bent on seeing this film. i'm tara moriarty, back to. >> you a lot of people might not have considered see it. now they want to check it out. thank you, tara. 7:06. sony's decision not to release the film could end up costing the studio hundreds of millions of dollars. it costs $80 million to make and market the movie. the cost of new software, hardware and lanor to clean up after the describe eb attack, as well as lost productivity. that could add up to another $100 million. even if the movie is released later, it will lose its share of the big holiday movie audience. retailers may resist carrying the video for fear of retaliation if it's released only as a home video. >> people in hollywood went on social media criticizing sony's decision to pull the movie.

zach braf said canceling the interview seeps like a pretty horrible precedent to set. newt gingrich said -- >> and then there's michael moore, he said this -- dear sony hackers, now that you run hollywood, i would also like less romantic comedies, fewer michael bey movies and no more transformers. we want to hear from you. go to our ktvu facebook page and join this conversation. union city police need help identifying a man who they say has been recording women inside the bathroom of a walmart store. store surveillance cameras captured this image of the suspect at the drier street store on tuesday night. police say the man was apparently hiding inside a

bathroom stall. he was in there for about ten minutes before one woman finally noticed him recording her. police say the man managed to walk out of the store and is still at large. he's described as white, about 45 years old, with curly salt and pepper hair. happening today in less than two hours, in fact, thousands of low-income families will start to pick up a holiday gift box. it will include all of the holiday essentials for a meal. alex savidge joins us with the program that feeds mouths and also lifts spirits. alex? >> reporter: tori, good morning to you. yes. many people struggle here in the south bay and across the bay area to put food on the table, especially around the holidays. that's where sacred heart community service comes in. the nonprofit here in san jose will be handing out boxes full of food later on today, canned foods, rice, beans, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables and you need the bird as well to make

for the perfect holiday meal. they can all of these boxes prep and ready to go. volunteers put them together. it was quite an undertaking. 3300 low-income and homeless families will receive one of these boxes later on today when they do their annual holiday giveaway here at sacred heart. i want to bring in the executive director. i appreciate you having us in this morning. it's a great day for you. you get to help a lot of families in need. >> this is amazing. it's the 50th year we've been providing resources to families in the community. while this is only a couple of days of what we're doing, it's part of the 75,000 folks that come to us each year needing help. this is a special gift we're able to do. >> reporter: i want to point out what you are seeing are the families who came last month and they line up and it's really incredible when you see the lines. they line up and they register just to come acpick up one of these boxes here the week before christmas. >> some people lined up overnight just to have the

opportunity to get this because their budgets are really stretched tight. they need some help. we're -- we look at this as being a special gift for them this holiday season. a wonderful meal with a lot of trimmings but for them, it's just groceries to get through the month. we're struggling. >> reporter: a lot of people doing well in the silicon valley. you knee the economic disparity up close. >> absolutely. it's something that we tend to keep of sacred heart for helping the poverty. a lot of people work full time but can't make enough to make ends meet and with rising housing costs, they are being squeezed more and more and not seeing their income rise. >> reporter: a huge demand they are seeing. the doors will open at 9:00 this morning. that's when families will come in. they've preregistered for one of these food boxes here. by the way, they will be giving away food today and tomorrow and then what sacred heart does

next week leading up to christmas, tori, they give away toys so the kids have a christmas. >> okay. good stuff. >> reporter: very important. >> absolutely. doing great work and getting some great donations and help from their friends. great story, alex. >> reporter: absolutely. 7:10. a driver plowed right into a crowd of people. it happened outside of a southern california church. we have new information this morning about the driver and the victims coming up in a live report. a serious scare for a bay area family as a man shattered a sliding glass door to get into a home. there was a twist. it was all an early-morning mistake and how it nearly cost that man his life. right now we're looking at a commute as you drive over to the 24 callly cut tunnel. that's very slow here in la fayette. we'll tell you more about what's going on here. plenty of reports of drizzle this morning and even fog. but there are a few breaks in the clouds. look at that for those listening not watching.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." 7:13. boy, tragedy last night near los angeles after a church christmas concert. investigators say a suspected drunk driver ran a red light and hit a group of people who were coming out of church. now, witnesses say it was just horrible. witnesses, the victims were tossed all over an intersection. we have new details this morning about the crash and some of the victims. our reporter joins us live at the st. james catholic church in redondo beach. what do you know now? >> reporter: well, we are just learning two of the three people that died are senior citizens. their names were just released. but first, let's show you what happened, the horror that happened here in front of the church last night.

it was 8:00 when police say that group that had attended a christmas pageant at st. james catholic church that was put on by students at the church's school were leaving. they were crossing pacific coast highway when police say a woman ran a red light and slammed her saturn straight into a group of pedestrians that were in the crosswalk. but that did not stop her. according to witnesses, she just kept on driving all the while dragging one of her victims with her. and she only stopped according to police because she crashed again. this time head on into an oncoming car. >> it appears from the evidence at the scene that at least one of the pedestrians that was struck actually was carried a short distance and came into contact with another vehicle that was in the southbound lanes. and either landed on the hood or possibly underneath the vehicle. >> reporter: and witnesses say it was a young boy that was pinned underneath that car. now, at least nine people were taken to the hospital. many of them also in critical

condition. as for the two senior citizens that died, they've been identified as mary wilson, 81 years old of torrance and 87- year-old sikel also of torrance. the third them has not been identified. the archdiocese of los angeles is asking people to join st. james parish in prayer. the driver of the saturn is in the hospital being treated for her injuries. she will be booked for felony dui and also vehicular manslaughter. her name has not yet been released. reporting live from redondo beach, back to you. >> thank you. 7:16. a benicia man was shot when he went to the wrong house while he was drunk. police say 24-year-old true hatch was pounding on the sliding glass door of a home at 4:30 yesterday morning. the people inside called 911 but seconds later hatch smashed the glass door and walked in. the homeowner told police he

warned the intruder that he had a gun but hatch kept walking into the family woman so the homeowner shot him. >> right after my dad fired the shot, benicia police broke in the front door, they were already en route from my mom calling. and they arrested him pretty much on the spot. >> police say hatch was not trying to steal anything but was very intoxicated and was trying to visit his ex- girlfriend who lived down the hill. the homeowner who fired the shot is not being charged. hatch was treated at the hospital and released. we have new information about the safety of 2,000 bolts and rods on the eastern span of the bay bridge. the san francisco chronicle says a draft report by an advisory panel found those bolts and rods are not in danger of failing and should stay in place. questions were raised last year when 32 of the rods cracked. well, caltrans spent $45 million testing and securing those cracked rods. the draft report is due to be

presented tomorrow to the bridge oversight committee. the light sculpture on the western span of the bay bridge will keep on shining. the lights were turned on last year. they were due to come down in march. but the project's sponsors say thanks to private donations and a new deal with the bay area toll authority, they were able to save this light show. the crews are gonna have to take down the installation next year for bridge maintenance but they will be permanently reinstalled in early 2016. >> i heard just in time for the super bowl that's gonna happen down at levi stadium. they are such a beautiful sight. >> it is. let's check in with sal, see how traffic is going on this -- looking carefully at all of the maps. >> you've been out here. i have all of my stuff right here. you know, sometimes i make sure i go on the air and i don't say things like it's wonderful that i look up. it's not wonderful. let me show you what i'm looking at. i will put it on the big screen

here. i'm looking at highway 24. highway 24 is going to be a little bit slow here coming up to la fayette. there's not a major problem but it's slowing down on the way through and if you want to engage me on twitter or facebook and let me know when you think that we'll start seeing people just not going to work as we get closer to next week, christmas is -- i think it's thursday, right, thursday, next thursday. a week from today. it is going to start looking like a ghost town out there. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. certainly not a ghost town. it's about a 25, 30-minute delay getting into san francisco. we've had some slow traffic in walnut creek as well on southbound 680 from 242 to 24. we had a couple of crashes here and there, 238 at 880, very slow. we've had a couple of different crashes in the hayward area. southbound 880 at winton there was a crash blocking the left lane. this whole area is slow and as we move over to 580, 580 is

slow through livermore on the way to dublin. let's go to the weather center and steve. all right, sal. thank you. very good morning. we do have mostly cloudy skies. still some drizzle, fog, light rain. there's another system that has to pay a visit. that will be late tonight and tomorrow. then it looks like the pattern will change a little bit. we'll see the jet stream or the rain line lift northward. still cloudy to mostly cloudy. jim sent me an e-mail. bollinger canyon, he says this is the first -- i've lived here all my life. this is the first fall i can remember without a frost. i had this same conversation with a friend of mine in cordelia the other way, i believe the coldest low this fall has been 33. so yes, if you have lived out here and haven't had a frost, we've not. a good observation. one more front will be here. that will bring us rain on friday. it won't be showers. it will be rain. some of the rain totals coming in, cazadero, .62.

oakmont, highway 12, .50. middletown, greta with that observation, .50 there. so cal, .41. san francisco, .30. union city, .23. bay area rainfall -- by the way the drought monitor index came out, 23% of the state has been dropped from exceptional which is the highest level it goes in 18 days of rain. 23% of the state dropped. we still have a long way to go. but that's amazing. 11.18 for oakland. san jose is so far out in front, 254% of normal on the rain. system that came in last night left about .25 to .23. there's clouds in advance of the next system. some of that drizzle shows up. a lot of it does not. if you are getting drizzle saying -- it doesn't show up. mostly cloudy, drizzle. breezy, a little out of the southeast. increasing clouds. 60s on some of the temps. there's the system that will start to move in and give us

some rain. 40s, 50s. a lot of 50s on the temps. the breeze picking up on the embarcadero, san jose, sfo, half moon bay and hayward and livermore showing signed of a wind. 28 in tahoe. 40s, 50s down to san diego from eureka to san diego. this system will move in. that will will give us okay rain to the north bay. the rain -- heavier rain is moving north. there will be far less than that to the south. could be pockets of .50 to 1.50 to some of those from this final system. there will be one on saturday. that will be farther north. partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. 60s on some of the temps. 50s for others. look for a couple of sunbreaks in the morning. we'll increase the clouds along with the southeast wind, a mild pattern. a weak brushes us on saturday. then a break, sunday, monday, tuesday. that's as far as i'm going. >> all right, steve. it's an unbelievable story

7:25. the u.s. navy is showing off a new experimental drone but it doesn't fly. this new drone swims like a fish by moving its tail. the ghost swimmer drone is about 5 feet long. it can drive 300 feet deep. it can swim on its own or be controlled by a laptop using a long tether. the navy says the device has been monitoring currents and

tides but has the capability of tracking other things. a man and his dog separated in last week's big storm, once a week steve aliota and his dog, daisy, they enjoy a free lunch at sausalito presbyterian church. last wednesday, steve spent the day helping a friend with his boat. steve left daisy behind on his boat in richardson bay. when he came back, the boat was under water and daisy was gone. then the unthinkable happened. a neighbor told steve that a wet, shivering dog was on the steps of the sausalito presbyterian church. >> i cried for two days. i guess i'm crying right now because i'm really happy i doesn't lose daisy. >> officials say daisy escaped that sinking boat, swam more than a mile and then walked another half-mile before making

the bridge anymore. if you are looking at northbound 85, we have a crash near win chest ter. the traffic is gonna be slow getting out from downtown san jose. ultimate route, 87 to 280 or get on the freeway as you head up to sunnyvale after the saratoga area. back to the desk. >> all right, sal. now to our continuing coverage of the december storm. a family on the peninsula, they are back home after floodwaters forced them to evacuate their mobile home park. cara lui, live in belmont to tell us how last week's storm has actually brought that community together. >> reporter: good morning. i want to first show you what this community looks like right now. we're surrounded by hoses, tubes and sandbags out here. there are a couple of trucks blocking this driveway so nobody drives over this stuff. i just talked to a few of the workers who say work will begin out here in about another hour. they will be reinforcing part of the piping here and building a ramp over the section so the

driveway can be reopened. now, one of the families that got to go back into their homes last night was the barriga family. power has been restored to the community. but these folks spent the previous five nights living in a motel. they were one of a dozen families forced to evacuate last thursday and frey when floodwaters got to several feet high. the belmont mobile home park is prone to flooding because it's a low-lying area. firefighters had to cut power to mobile homes and the family lost power tools and other belongings that were stored beneath the home and damaged by the floodwater. they also lost all of the flood that spoiled in the refrigerator. the ordeal, very disruptive for this 10-year-old who was worried about his family becoming homeless. >> do we have to move or is this the water -- is the water to go get bigger? >> the hard part was the kids worried about it. >> everything is working together. we have a beautiful town here. we're proud of it.

once in a while, we get under water. we will recover. >> reporter: and some of that recovery came in the form of waterproof casings installed yesterday to help protect each home's power source. a school is raising money to help others impacted by flooding. nearly $15,000 has been raised on their go fund me site. i want to mention that's thanks to more than half a dozen donations that have come in in the last couple of hours. it appears the donations are appearing to trickle in. back to you. >> great to hear. cara lui, thank you. new this morning in emeryville, holiday candles apparently sparked a one-alarm house fire in emeryville. we're told it started about 4:30 this morning on beaudry street near 55th. the woman who lives there woke up and her bedroom was engulfed in flames. now, she did manage to escape.

however, her cat died in that fire. the house also suffered a lot of damage. 7:36. happening today, public defenders across the bay area will rally in support of michael brown, the unarmed teenager shot to death by a ferguson, missouri police officer. the public defenders will observe four and a half minutes of silence to symbolize the four and a half hours brown's body was left lying on the street after he died. alameda county public defenders will rally in 30 minutes from now followed by san francisco and contra costa county public defenders at noon. east bay leaders held a town hall forum last night aimed at bringing the gap between police and protesters. oakland mayor jean quan and barbara lee took part in the event which was held at oakland's vb memorial theater. hundreds packed the church to voice their frustrations about the justice system. congresswoman lee said she wants president obama to appoint a police czar.

>> we have racial profiling legislation that we have spending. the president has taken several executive actions. we need to go much further. >> mayor quan says oakland police have implemented reforms such as uniformed cameras and the number of officers wearing the cameras went from 200 in 2010 to 619 this year. over the same time, use of force incidents dropped by roughly 75%. oakland police say they didn't know that the chp had two undercover police officers at an anti-police protest on december 10th. now, when protesters attacked one of the chp officerser. the other officer pulled out a baton and pointed a gun at the approaching demonstrators. the chp says the plain clothes officers were there to find out if the protesters were planning to block freeways. but oakland police say they have been checking for the past week and say there haven't found anyone within their

police department who was told about the chp undercover operation. there's concern that a lack of communication among law enforcement agencies may possibly endanger the lives of everyone involved. san francisco supervisor scott wiener calls it very disturbing. a video catching a person vandalizing a tree. wiener posted the video online. take a look. it shows a man last thursday walking up to this a newly- planted tree outside of a home on noe street and then tearing off a limb and walking away with the branch. now, while the city is trying to add extra officers out there, wiener says there's an anything go criminal atmosphere out there for smaller crimes. he's worried it could lead to more serious crimes. palo alto's tough ban on smoke something getting tougher. yesterday, the city council voted to expand the areas where smoking is banned. smoking was already banned within 25 feet of a doorway to

a business. well, now smoking is banned in commercial areas including the stanford shopping center, downtown palo alto, and the california avenue business district. 7:39. san jose city manager is resigning after just one year on the job. edward chikada plans to leave at the end of the month. he decided to resign after the city council met yesterday to cuss his performance, they were reportedly planning to vote tomorrow to terminate his contract. sources say some council members were not happy he fired the deputy city manager without telling them first. the deputy city manager is expected to fill the position until a replacement is found. a new report says the wealth gap between middle and upper income households is at a record high. the pugh research center says on average, high-income families had $639,000 more in

assets than debts last year. that's up 7% from the year before. but middle income families held steady at $90,000. that number has not changed in four years. that means the typical wealth of high-income families is now seven times higher than middle- income families. that's the biggest gap in the 30 years the information has been collected. a reason to smile this morning. christmas came early for five families in the east bay. >> ready, one, two, three. yes! president obama ape announcement that the u.s. is re-establishing diplomatic relations with cuba does not mean you can book a vacation to a cuban beach yet. americans wanting to travel to cuba will still have to fall into one of the authorized categories, such as educational activities or professional meets. americans who do go, though, will now be able to use their credit and debit cards which they couldn't before. they had to carry all cash. and they will be allowed to bring home up to $100 worth of subben cigars and rum -- cuban

cigars and rum. >> many in the bay area say they welcome president obama re- establishing diplomatic relation with cuba. george gas conwho grew up in cuba says he has mixed feelings about it. on one hand, he's happy that president obama is engaging in meaningful dialogue with cuba saying the policy of isolation clearly has not worked. on the other hand, he says he's concerned because a free media and more democratic process in cuba doesn't appear to be a part of the equation. economists say, however, eventually opening ties with cuba could present opportunities for businesses in california. high-tech companies could help wire the island where right now few average cubans even have a computer. and if export regulations are eased, california farmers could increase the amount of farm products sent to cuba. 7:46. a short time ago, the surviving

boston marathon bombing suspect arrived in court for his final pretrial hearing. take a look. this is 21-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. his first court appearance since his arraignment back in july of 2013. his trial is scheduled to begin january 5th. 7:47. a missouri school district is apologizing over a decision by school officials to take a cane away from a blind student and replace it with a swimming pool noodle. >> it's a lot harder with this. >> 8-year-old dakota was born without eyes and uses a cane to get around normally. but north kansas city school district spokesperson said he hit someone with his cane on the school bus. so they took the cane away from

him and gave him a noodle. dakota's mom said her son did get a writeup for misbafning but believes taking the -- misbehaving but believes taking the cane away was not the right punishment. >> why would you do that? why would you take the one thing he's supposed to use all of the time. that's his eyes. >> dakota was told he would have to use the noodle for two weeks. but after a communeny backlash school officials have returned the rain and are apologizing -- cane and are apologizing. the national federation for the blind has donated a new cane to dakota so now he has an extra one at home. let's check in with sal, get you to where you need to go. you are watching the toll plaza and everything else. >> yeah, and it's kind of a normal commute. nothing really unordinary about it. you can see people squeezing through. the rate seems about normal. it's about a 25, 30-minute delay. no problems on the bridge.

we had earlier accidents of the didn't cause any huge problems. i want to mention that 880 has not become real heavy and slow which is good. i do want to mention a little bit of farther south as we move in and take a look at the maps here. 880 north and south in hayward an union city is slow in both directions. i have this on the maps. you can see that traffic is going to be busy, especially southbound 880 but a little bit of northbound 880 as well as you drive through. i want to mention something about the peninsula. northbound 280 at john daly boulevard in daly city. there is a report of a crash. that's the westlake exit. traffic is a little bit slow. southbound traffic is also going to be slow in that area. out of daly city and heading down to san bruno and 380 interchange. actually, at this point, i would use 101 which is something i rarely say, 101 doesn't look too bad out of the city. let's go to steve. all right, sal.

thank you, sir. a very good morning. we do have a couple of breaks in those clouds. but still a mostly cloudy morning. drizzle, fog. this is our ktvu east bay walnut creek tree looking back to oakland. you can see a lot of the fog. a rather gray, gloomy morning. some of the rainfall was okay. about .25 to about .23 in the last 24 hours. there's still another system that has to roll in here. so some sun today farther to the south. farther to the north. probably more in the way of cloud cover. drizzle. one more front. we will get rain on friday. this one looks to be stronger. some of the rain totals, the last 24 hours, we're -- they were ho-hum. no big deal. we're used to a couple of inches. these are a couple of inch or .50. brentwood .27. middletown, .50. yountville had .50. sausalito, .23 and cazadero .23. for the morning commute, cloudy to mostly cloudy.

there are a couple of breaks. drizzle, light rain. breeze picking up out of the east-southeast. that will pick up as the next system approaches. rain tonight into tomorrow. we'll need a break. we just won't get it until sunday for sure. oakland is now 194% of normal. 193% for san francisco and san jose, 254% of normal even though they have 9.84 for them. you can see a lot of that cloud cover streaming over us. the systems fall apart in the sierras. these are bigger systems for us and central california and southern than it has been for northern california and the sierra nevada. a little bit of that drizzle shows up. a lot of that is too low to be picked up. the first system is dragging across clouds. enhancement taking place right there. forecast projections are ramping up some of the rain totals. 50s on many of the temps. a lot of people said, you know, we had midlatitude systems for a while. unless you get drier air in

here, no wind and clear skies, our temperatures cannot fall that fall that far. that's why we're seeing 49 to 52 on some of the lows. it's just saturated rye now. east wind, southeast wind in advance of that. that will start to ramp up. higher elevations. coast could get up to 25, 30. 52 sacramento. one system approaching. the next one will start to take a track to the north. between now and friday night i think there will be decent totals, especially up towards mendocino county, lake county. forecast models are bullish on the rainfall which will make it south but not as much toward the south. partly to mostly cloudy here. drizzle. some fog. there will be a few sunbreaks. 50s and 60s. with that southeast breeze and so much moisture in the air, maybe higher on the humidity factor. rain arrives on friday. there will be one more system brushing the north bay on saturday, then we'll get a break sunday through wednesday. signs of maybe a colder system christmas night or or the next

not really a lot. this system coming in tonight, tomorrow it looking stronger. rainfall projections have been ramped up. we'll have a lot of cloud cover today with a southeast breeze. a little breezy at times. temperatures starting off in the 50s. there have been numerous reports of drizzle. some of it doesn't show up. for the morning, cloudy to mostly cloudy. drizzle. increasing clouds will continue. kind of a mild pattern. it's right back here and looking better and better with time. friday does look like a rain day. generally 50, temperature dew point, pretty close together. it's tough to get colder. southeast breeze is beginning to pick up. especially for the southern parts of the peninsula and cloudy to mostly cloudy today. more clouds to the north and the rainfall which has about .30 to .50 has gob up higher to the -- gone up higher to the north. it will make it farther south. could be 1 inch to maybe 1.25. it wouldn't surprise me in marin county as well. that's tomorrow.

today, upper 50s, low 60s under mostly cloudy skies. now here he is, mr. sal castanedo. >> good morning. we are looking at a commute, steve, that is, i would say moderate. we've had slow traffic still. i have a feeling that tomorrow will still be a busy day. on monday as we get to christmas week, you will see a drop off. let's take a look at 280 northbound getting up to john daly boulevard. there is a crash that's on that ramp, highway 1 at brotherhood there, which is 280 and highway 1 kind of the same thing there. if you are trying to get to san francisco state and you are taking 280 northbound, it's a bad move at this point, unfortunately. southbound 280 is okay through the area until you get to the ceremony mall and head down to san bruno. i want to move the map as little bit. 880 in both directions in hayward and union city has been slow and 238 is slow well onto 580 in castro valley. let's go to live pictures. i want to show you that the bay bridge toll plaza is backed you

for 25 minutes. san jose, northbound 280 downtown, not too bad. but there's slow traffic on 85 and 101 trying to drive into the west valley. back to the desk. u.s. officials are ready to blame north korea for the brazen and very costly cyber attack at sony pictures, one that led to the shutdown of its controversial new movie "the interview." an announcement from investigators may come as soon as today. tara moriarty joining us live now. you are in walnut creek getting some reaction. tara? >> reporter: a lot of people have told us that they didn't have any intense of seeing the movie. now they definitely want to see it simply because north korean hackers don't want them to. we also know that hollywood has spoken on social media. they are blaming the theaters for not releasing the movie. they also are blaming the media for disseminating a lot of those private e-mails we were talking about earlier in the week. now, in the end, sony pictures was strong armed into canceling

the film's release because most of the major theater chains announced that they would not show the movie. hackers got into sony's computer system and exposed sensitive documents and made terror threats because the interview is about the asat nation of kim jung un. we asked people if they thought sony should have buckled to north korea. >> it was weak. i think that the sony and the actors were bold in making the movie and they had to expect this reaction and the fact that they are pulling it at the last minute is shocking. >> reporter: the major theater chains also feared that families would heed the hackers' warning and bypass the box office altogether for the remainder of the holiday season that. would have impacted entertainment firms. sony said there are no further plans to release "the interview." i'm tara moriarty, back to you.

yesterday, the 49ers cut ray mcdonald less than an hour after san jose police announced ray mcdonald was at the center of another criminal investigation. police searched ray mcdonald's house in san jose after a woman who is not his fiancee claimed he is sexually assaulted her. ray mcdonald's mother talked to ktvu by phone from her home in florida. >> the camera will tell the whole story. my son was lost his job over some accusations that will be proven were merely accusations. >> this case comes just one month after prosecutors declined to file charges against mcdonald's in a domestic violence investigation because of a lack of evidence. many of his teal mates are not surprised. >> i feel like jeb made it clear how he feels about everything, and you know,

part one of a special giveaway. good morning, alex. >> reporter: tori, good morning. so many families here in the south bay have a tough time putting food on the table, especially around the holidays. that's why sacred heart community service is here to help. they are doing their annual holiday good giveaway. they will be handing out boxes full of food, it will include canned foods, bees, rice, fresh fruits and vegetables. so that familieses can have a nice holiday meal. you can see all of the boxes, they've been prepared by the volunteers, 3300 food boxes will be handed out to low- income and homeless families. i want to bring in pancho, you are the executive director. you've seen an overwhelming need this year in part because of the high cost of living here in the south bay. >> it's bun of the things we're seeing a lot of folks getting back to work and having a lot of hope. they are not seeing increases in their wages other than the

increase in minimum wage that happened last year in san jose. and so people are really being outpaced with the cost of housing increasing over 10% this last year alone and it's creating a big squeeze. we're seeing a lot of more families even this year starting to come to us. we're trying to step up and meet the need. >> reporter: and you've relied on the generosity of the good people in the community. how are the donations compared to the demand. >> they are pretty good. they are level. but the need continues to grow. this time of year is when we put out the word that we need the help for this week and the entire year. the need don't end on january 1 stf. we're prepared to have a lot of fun this week and the next couple of days in particular. but the financial support goes a long way. >> reporter: you get hundreds of volunteers to help out this time of year important work they do. what you are seeing is video from last month when many people in this community to wanted to sign up for a food box came up here and lined up

outside. came down early in the morning so they could be preregistered. important to point out you want to make that clear that everyone is gonna come down here has already put their names in. >> exactly. some folks lined up overnight to make sure they could -- a lot of those families signed up for toys. we will be doing that next week. >> reporter: they will be giving away food. that happens this week. today and tomorrow here at sacred heart and then as pancho mentioned, next week, they will make sure that the kids have presents and they will be giving away some of the toys. we had some earlier but they are getting them ready to -- ready to go for the toy drive that happens next week. giving away boxes to those in the south bay who are low income and homeless can have at least a holiday meal during this important time of year. >> yeah. >> very important stuff. thank you. 8:11. still ahead, the storm cleanup goes on after the record- breaking rain we've had.

coming up in 22 minute, the efforts underway and how the weather is bringing many communities together. a suspected drunk driver plows into a group of pedestrians in redondo beach. the new information about some of the victims coming out of a church after a holiday concert. good morning. we're looking at traffic that is getting a little bit better in some areas that you drive through. this looks like southbound 101 in san rafael. you can see traffic is a little bit busy trying to get on from central san rafael heading south to the 580 interchange. it's raining there. it seems like it's been raining for 18 days. wait a minute. it has. the next system arrives tonight and tomorrow and that one looks wetter.

8:14. more information is coming out about a deadly crash last night in reon doe beach. it followed a children's christmas pageant. we've been reporting about this crash throughout the morning. investigators say a suspected drunk driver ran a red light, then hit a group of people walking in a crosswalk who had just come out of the st. james catholic church. three people were killed, including two women in their 80s. we're now learning the other person killed was also a woman. >> it appears from the evidence at the scene that at least one of the pedestrians that was struck actually was carried a short distance and came into contact with another vehicle that was in the southbound lanes. and it either landed on the hood or possibly underneath that vehicle. >> the driver was taken to the

hospital for an evaluation. she has not yet been booked but will face dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. some of the nine people injured are children with severe head trauma. we have new information about how safe are the 2,000 bolts and rods on the eastern span of the bay bridge. now, the san francisco chronicle says a draft report by an advisory panel found the bolts and rods are not in danger of failing and they should stay in place. a lot of questions were raised last year when 32 of the rods cracked. caltrans spent $45 million testing and securing those cracked rods. that draft report is due to be presented tomorrow to the bridge oversight committee. the light sculpture on the western span of the bay bridge will keep on shining. the lights were turned on last year. they were due to come down in march but thanks to private donations and a deal with the

bay area authority, they were able to save the light show. the crew also have to take down the installation next year for bridge maintenance but they will be permanently reinstalled in early 2016. well, speaking of lights, it's not just your neighbors who can see your holiday decorations so can nasa satellites. scientists say there is a seasonal increase in lights coming from u.s. cities between black friday and new year's day. the increase is biggest in suburban area, including the east bay and the north bay. this isn't just about nasa getting into the holiday spirit. researchers are also using the information to track energy use around the world and to see where demand is increasing. i love those shots. >> very interesting. they can see you. >> a little creepy, too. 8:17. we can see sal and you can see what's happening in our commute. how are we doing? >> we're doing okay. we do have slow traffic. i'm noticing that traffic has

become a little better in some areas. let's take a look at san mateo bridge. the traffic here has become better in the last few minutes. it seems to be moving better than it was. we had an earlier stalled vehicle on that span. nearby, though, 880 is finally recovering after we have had slow traffic in union city in both directions. when up get to the peninsula, 101 is slow through menlo park and palo alto. and 280 is not that bad if you are on 280 south of 92. that's a better way to get into the south bay. i want to mention that traffic is moving along okay if you are driving on 85 through mountain view. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza and you can see that is backed up for a little while. 8:18. today's weather, here's steve. >> thank you, sal. >> you are welcome. mostly cloudy, light rain continuing. it's more in the nature of drizzle. there will be a few breaks in the clouds. southeast breeze trying to show signs of ramping up a little

bit. i think it will as our next system comes in. this one is slowing to be stronger than the one we had last night. light rain today, mostly cloudy. some areas of fog. one more front, one and a half. there will be one on saturday. the pattern is lifting. it looks like we'll get a break, sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday. after that i'm not gonna touch it. rain returns towards the new year. that's the way it's looking right now. we will get rain on friday. some of the rain totals. i tried doing as many as i can. i don't want to favor a certain area. you just favoring the east bay? no. cazadero, .62. sausalito, .60. yountville .50. lake county, .50. concord .37. danville, .32. brentwood .27. i was looking at the peninsula, south bay, general less than .25. trying to see where the most rain was. most of it toward the north. our system is already moving in with a lot of cloud cover. this is the weaker sector, the warmer sector coming in. mostly cloudy skies.

beneath that there's drizzle. it just doesn't show up very well. we still get areas. next system right there and it's looking a little stronger here. it's going to move in late tonight akd tomorrow and give us a rainy day on friday. 50s on the temps. the breeze picking up out of the southeast or south. i expect that to be 20, 25 miles an hour along the coast. higher elevations by tonight. 20s up in the in the -- 20s up in the mountains. 54, 56, l.a. and san diego. not much in the sierra nevada. you are good to go if you are heading up there. would go today instead of tomorrow. beat the system. we have mostly cloudy skies here, drizzle, fog. partly to mostly cloudy skies for your thursday and then tonight, more rain moves back into the north and then it will move south over the day tomorrow. but moderate, maybe bursts of heavy rain to the north bay. the rainfall projections not that high a couple of hours ago. now they are starting to pick up a little bit in intensely.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." 8:24. a fascinating and controversial part of history. an african-american boy who was executed at the age of 14, 70 years ago for the killing of two young white girls has now

been exonerated in south carolina. george steny junior who you see in the photos was the youngest person executed in the united states during the 20th century. this week, a federal judge ruled that steny was denied due process in that controversial case back in 1944. it is 8:25. a plumber in texas is trying to repair his company's image after one of his old trucks fell into the hands of islamic militants in syria. it still had the name of his company on the door there. a militant group posted photos online of them firing and a weapon in syria. the shop has been inundated with calls, some of them threatening from people who think the business is a terrorist front. >> something that we would use to pull trailers and things like that. i mean, now a truck to be used in terror. i mean it's crazy. >> the plumber traded the truck to an auto dealership in noevg

of people are off this week. anecdotal evidence. >> let's take a look hat the commute, you can see traffic is moving along slowly on 880 heading north. 880 northbound up past the coliseum. it's been slow by the way. it's been slow on 88 and hayward. a little bit more room but a 20, 25-minute delay. if you are driving into san francisco, 280 and 101 slow at the alameda maze. northbound highway 208 is ill proving a little bit in -- improving a little bit as we look at the peninsula, 101 is still slow in palo alto and mountain view. back to the desk. all right, sal. a family on the peninsula, back home now after floodwaters forced them to leave their mobile home park in belmont. cara lui joining us live from belmont to tell us how that storm last week has actually brought their community together. good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

dave. it sure has brought this community together. i can tell you several work crews are out here this morning tackling some of the repairs necessary. there was a pipe that was put in to help get some of the floodwater out of this community but right now this pipe is blocking the driveway. workers say they will be putting in sturdier piping through the section, building a ramp so people who used to live here can use their driveway again. electricians have been out here this morning for a third day in a row. they are installing weatherproofing, hoping to restore power to the very last few remaining homes here at the belmont mobile home park. they say this community suffered some of the worst damage they've seen. >> all of the plugs got submerged underwater. we're going through and repulling water, updating the plug, updating the covers. cleaning out the pipes, making sure there's no water in them. >> reporter: the floodwaters got to several feet high last week and the barrega family was

one family that had to evacuate last friday. their 10-year-old son worried about where he was going to live and sleep at night. the family of five ekded up moving -- ended up moving to a motel before being able to return last night. >> right now, we are home. that's our big happiness right now. my kids had to do -- they have their place to sleep and they are happy to be home. >> reporter: now, the boy's school is working with a city councilmember to raise money on the go fund me site to help so many of those families impacted by the flooding. donations have been coming in, including half a dozen in the last 30 minutes or so. so far, more than $15,000 has been raised to help some of these folks. back to you. >> cara lui, thank you for the update. well, new this morning in

emeryville, holiday candles apparently sparked an early- morning one-alarm house fire in emeryville. it started about 4:30 this morning on beaudry street near 55th. the woman who lives there woke up and her bedroom was engulfed in flames. now, she managed to escape safely but sadly her cat was killed in that fire. the house also suffered a lot of damage. happening now, oakland firefighters are offering some holiday help for people in need this morning. brian flores is in oakland now and brian, what are the fire crews up to now? >> reporter: hi, tori. the holiday spirit definitely here at station 18 off 50th and bancroft in oakland. what these firefighters are doing today, they are getting ready to feed several needy families here in the oakland area and throughout the bay area. see many of the firefighters here recruits also getting these boxes ready. the food will be here very soon for several needy families. they've been doing this for several years. i'm here with seth, firefighter with the oakland fire

department. thank you for joining us. tell us about the program that's been going on for years. >> since 1985. 29 years been helping out the community ever since. >> reporter: tell us the back story. i understand it started with a few families in the beginning like a -- there was a shift of firefighters that say we should help out needy families. >> here at station 18 people come to us for help all of the time. we hope to get this -- like i said we started in 1985. started with two families now we're up to 200 feales. >> reporter: what's inside the food boxes, fruit baskets. >> it's almost like a thanksgiving was kept turkey and beans and rice and canned foods and everything that people need to have a nice family dinner. >> reporter: where do you hand the positions to? churches. >> needy families? >> people contact local 55 or max and put their name in for receiving the boxes and we distribute them through houses of worship generally speaking.

>> reporter: what does it mean for you to do something like this? oakland firefighters very busy especially during the rainy season. it has to be very good for your heart and everything else, right, i mean in terms of helping people out? >> firefighters want to help out. that's the bottom line. it's another way that we can help serve our community. >> reporter: is there a bay for people to help out maybe not this year but next year? >> there's a number of ways they can help out. this is publicized in the community ahead of time. you can contact oakland firefighters rena max. they have contact information online. >> reporter: very interesting story. the food was supposed to be here an hour ago and then the truck that was originally supposed to be used actually broke down because they were using it -- they were carrying sandbags but that truck actually broke down. they so were trying to get another truck over here. oakland firefighters working

quickly to help several needy families station 18 here in oakland. >> oh, boy. quite an adventure for the truck. >> reporter: yeah. also happening now, public defenders in the bay area are rallying in support of michael brown, the unarmed taker shot to death -- teenager shot to death by a ferguson, missouri police officer. we received a photo of the staff at the alameda county public defenders office lining up 20 minutes ago. they observed four and a half minutes of silence to symbolize the four and a half hours brown's body was left lying on the street after he died. san francisco and contra costa county public defenders will hold their rallies at noon. 8:38. union city police need your help. they are trying to identify a man who they say has been recording women inside the bathroom of a walmart store. now, take a look at this. store surveillance cameras coop churred this image tuesday night at the dryer street

walmart. police say he was hiding in a bathroom stall. he was in there for about ten minutes before one woman finally saw him recording her. police say the man managed to walk out of the store. he is still at large. he's described as a white man, about 45 years old, has curly salt and pepper hair. a benicia man was shot when he went to the wrong house while he was drunk. police say 24-year-old true hatch was pounding on the sliding glass door of the home at 4:30 yesterday morning. the people inside called 911 but seconds later hatch smashed the glass door and bached in-- walked in. the homeowner said he warned the intruder he had a gun but hatch still walked into the family room so the homeowner shot him. >> right after my dad fired the shot, benicia police broke in the front door because they were already en route from my mom calling. and they arrested him pretty much on the spot. >> spot.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." just an hour ago, the surviving boston marathon bombing suspect made his first court appearance since his arraignment in july of 2013. 21-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev faces a possible death sentence if he's convicted in the april 2013 bombings that killed three people and injured more than 260 others. now, the judge made no rulings today. he said he would rule in writing on pending motions, including the defense's latest push to move the trial. law enforcement in texas are searching for the gunman who wounded a television

meteorologist in waco, texas. patrick crawford is hospitalized in stable condition with wound to his stomach and shoulder. he was leaving the station yesterday when the gunman approached his car. they exchanged a few words. and the gunman then shot him three times before running away. run of the bullets grazed crawford's head. the weatherman drove off and got help down the road. officers are still looking for a motive behind the attack. 8:55. president obama's big announcement that the u.s. is re-establishing diplomatic relations with cuba, it doesn't mean you can just go book a vacation at a cuban beach just yet. the white house is expanding the special travel permits. however, americans who want to travel to cuba, you still have to fall into one of the authorized categories like professional meetings. americans who do go will be able to use credit and debit cards which you couldn't do before. and you will be allowed to
