ford road near petaluma. calfire used a jet ski to retriever a driver who's car stuck trying to get through water 3 feet deep. we begin with jana katsuyama live in berkeley with how the storm slowed the evening commute and weekend escapes, jana. >> reporter: we're at the university avenue exit, and it is not raining here. what a difference that makes. earlier the traffic was so slow, one man told me his normal 20 minute drive took more than an hour. friday night and traffic backed up throughout the bay in red and white strings of head lights and brake lights. >> it's bumper to bumper. >> reporter: the roadways were wet. >> still slippery, we can't really see that well. >> reporter: traffic backed up and the commute is a mess.

in downtown san francisco cars were going so slowly, this driver says her boyfriend was able to get off and grab coffee while they waited. >> we were hungry and traffic was so slow, so randy jumped out and got bagels and coffee and we had only advanced like three cars maybe. >> reporter: in the east bay, it was no fun for this man who's vehicle broke down in berkeley. >> really bad. i did almost 2-1/2 in the city. >> reporter: up north in petaluma, cars approached feet of water. >> when i went outside i saw the big tree broken it fell down on the car. >> reporter: still with autothe drought, some people say they're thankful for all the rainfall. >> the weather is just

horrible, but we need it. >> reporter: and even though the rain has stopped the pavement is still wet. so it is common sense to just make sure you go a little easy on the gas if you're heading out tonight. >> good idea. all right thank you from jana in berkeley. and we now go to our chief meteorologist bill martin. are we done with the rain? >> it's just like the man said, we're spoiled out here. we need this. it's like oh, rain. look at the rain accumulation especially san rafael almost 1- 1/2. look at san francisco. everyone else was above .4. san rafael, san francisco got hit pretty good. the rain has moved out of the area. those are going to slide down here as we head into tomorrow we could easily see scattered showers as we head into

tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon in the north bay. very light scattered showers but in terms of real rain it's over for a while. we're going to get a little chance to dry out here. when i come back we're going to track a slight chance of shower before saturday. and we go looking at the next rain event that will have an impact on the holiday. if you were going there today you needed to pack some patience. >> ken wayne live at donner summit to tell us about conditions. >> reporter: right here at donner summit, it is cold, it is windy. it's been on and off. very intermittent. you can see there is plenty of snow up here along or piled along interstate 80. traffic at this moment is moving at a pretty good pace. over the summit might be one of

the easier parts of the drought with all this traffic. donner summit was free of snow but that doesn't mean the drive was easy. >> traffic was really, really bad. we didn't factor in the extra holiday traffic. >> reporter: they said their problem came after the summit. where i'm walking is an undisturbed area, about 2 feet of snow from our recent series of storms. clerk ken wyatt says most of it is fresh. >> we got about two inches today. >> reporter: most of the snow that fell today was at higher

elevations. as of december 1st, the snow pack was 24% of normal for the state. now that's more than double to 52% of normal for today's date. much more snow is needed. >> it's better than last year's levels right now, but there's no telling. >> reporter: so with these storms we're seeing the snow pack start to slowly creep up but we've seen it before. we have decent snow in december and then shuts off in january and february. water experts say we need these storms to continue one after the other. right now we're just at about 14% of the snow pack that we should have on april 1st. so obviously there's a long way to go, it's early. >> you bet it is. you need a scarf out there. it was a very slow day for people heading in and out of san francisco international. more than 100 flights were

cancelled. the airport reports some departures were delayed. two weeks ago rain overwhelmed part of the mission terrace neighborhood and backed up a sewage line. this is home video taking the night it destroyed one man's basement office. this area sits at a low point where the water drains. 10 years ago the same thing happened during a storm. the city installed a pump but this storm was too much to handle. >> this isn't going to be where we can replace a larger pipe this is going to have to be a systemic fix for what's happening in the neighborhood. >> reporter: the city says it's committed to cleaning up the damage and a long term solution. the recent storms caused millions of dollars in damage. heavy rains flooded mobile home parks in redwood city and one in belmont forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

the state of emergency declaration could make state and federal aid available to pay for the $3.4 million in repairs. some of those families who's homes were flooded out are already getting some much needed help. at 10:15, how a community is coming together to help them get back on their feet before the holidays. a sheriff deputy is behind bars accused of misconduct while on duty while at san francisco hospital. the deputy allegedly battered a patient at the hospital on november 3rd of this year. lewellen was charged with perjury. his bail was set at $300,000. now the latest on the flairing at chevron. the incident lit up the sky last night sparking concern all across the bay area.

one county supervisor call it a near miss. as john fowler reports some people told us their concerned chevron isn't being completely truthful about what went wrong. investigators now calling it an upset inside of chevron's refinery. >> we saw a huge flow in the sky. and we went up, drove to the top of the hill and looked at the top of the flame. we thought we could smell something. >> reporter: four releases of the defaulting unit went up into the sky for fearly two hours. >> this is what you call a miss. this was not normal flairing. when pleasure building up in a unit, you can have an explosion, fire or some other

serious event. >> reporter: two years ago an explosion and fire at a different unit almost kill one chevron employee. sent thousands to hospitals and clinics. the company disregarded safety rules. chevron pleaded no contest and agreed to pay a $3 million fine. the city of richmond is now suing chevron over the 2012 fire and many people uneasy about the refinery. >> maybe if they were more forthcoming about the information of things they were going and what's going on there, then people could feel more at ease. >> reporter: a chevron spokesman says the community was notified but people tell us it was at least an hour late and few people got it. chevron's just released incident report acknowledged the problems but say that its safety equipment workedded and there were no off site contaminations that exceeded federal health standards. john fowler, ktvu news. this mother and two sons died when a dui driver slam

new at 10:00, dozens of families forced out by the flooding are getting help tonight, especially by their community. they say it's been a struggle trying to get back on their feet. amber lee was there today as they received a generous gift. >> reporter: i first visited the mobile home park on tuesday when some families were being allowed back home. we returned this evening as they received much needed help. >> a little something to help make this a little easier. >> reporter: inside the purple bag are gift cards by families affected by the floods. they were raised by a belmont city council member and the principal of nesbit elementary school. >> thank you. >> reporter: these women tell me their families lost food and other essential items during the floods. >> it's been really hard. one of the things i noticed is we have come together.

>> reporter: coming together during a time of need says marganeres is instinctive. the principal and the city came together to talk about the need in their community. >> together we can do anything. when we put our mind to it. >> reporter: the mother of these two young girls says they're grateful for the help but worry about more rain. she showed us a leak that is likely to cause damage. >> that was very painful for me on top of the flood. but i'm very thankful for the gift you guys provided. >> reporter: the herr era family tells my they were not planning to celebrate christmas because of the losses from the flood. now that's changed. >> i just really felt like what's the point of doing the whole christmas spirit and all of that, but after receiving the help, it just feels really good to know that we can now have a little bit of extra

money to buy some christmas presents. >> reporter: the principal and city council member told us the donations made it possible to help about 60 families at the mobile home park. gasia, ken. >> lots of good people out there. thank you amber. san francisco police say they are seeing a big jump in the number of bank robberies. ktvu learned there's been 19 bank robberies in just the past few weeks. investigators aren't sure if the holidays are a factor but officers say it's a crime that simply doesn't pay very well. >> the amount of money they get away with is not substantial. banks have different policies of how much money they can have at the front counter at any given time. so what they get away with is not worth the crime at all. >> reporter: run robber is known as bad santa who robbed the bank saturday in the middle

of the santa con event. he's still on the run. officers responded to savannah court on the report of a robbery. it was around 1:50 this afternoon. one of the victims had been abducted and taken to the scene by the intruders. while officers investigated at the scene, they found the victims safe. newark police arrived to see flames at the home. >> we don't know if she's in there. >> after hearing a woman was trapped on the second floor. >> stay low guys. >> reporter: officer lutrantey were among the first to arrive. these imagines from the body

cameras when they went inside. >> reporter: the smoke was thick, and crawled upstairs. ultimately spotting the homeowner. >> get out of the house. get out, get out. >> my house is on fire. >> it appeared she was sitting on the bed. completely disorientedded. not really sure what was going on. >> reporter: the two officers had seen a wheelchair lift on the stairs. they carried her down the stairs and outside to safety. >> stay low. >> i got her. i got her. >> reporter: the woman was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. so were the officers. both had inhaled smoke. and though the fire department was just minutes out, they say it's not in their nature to hesitate. >> my job, i mean someone's life is in danger. i'm going to go help them if i can. >> i can see that if i were in her position i would hope that any first responder would do the same thing to help me.

it's our job, that's what we do. >> reporter: the officers haven't had a chance to check on the woman yet though they would like to. they're on doctors orders to rest for two days before coming back to work. in newark, ann rubin. the clock is ticking for procrastinators. tomorrow is known as super saturday. retailers are doing their best to get people to spend. lots of clouds, lots of rain over here in the last few days or so. we continue to see clouds and less rain but still some rain in the forecast. we'll come in close. it's cloudy out there right now. the real story will be the high clouds tonight. the high chance of drizzle as we go in the morning hours. current radar shows rain now down in san jose.

oakland police and a local business are hoping surveillance pictures can help several people suspected of looting last month.

the suspect smashed through the window of a pcs store. that was the same day a grand jury decided not to indict the police officer in ferguson missouri. the picture showed the suspects coming in through that broken front door. if captured they should be charged with burglary and vandalism. we spoke to the store manager the following day as they cleaned up after the protest. he told us the vandals took off with $40,000 of merchandise. the website berkeley site reports that a ambulance was dispatched after a man collapsed. but firefighters were not able to reach him for 40 minutes because of the crowds in the area. berkeley's fire chief declined comment. the president is on his way to hawaii for the end of the

year vacation. before he boarded the plane, he addressed the sony hack. >> we will be in a position to respond to whatever actions they take the same way we do with the whole range of countries around the world. >> reporter: the president says he intends to push away with more unilateral actions as he heads into the fourth quarter of his presidency. sony's decision the to scrap the christmas release of the movie. the president called that a mistake. that prompted quick reaction. >> you want us to kill the leader of north korea? what. >> reporter: "the interview," escalating to terrorist threats against movie theaters.

in response, sony cancelled the release and today the president responded to their decision. >> i think they made a mistake. that's not who we are. that's not what america is about. >> reporter: the fbi says they do have extensive evidence that north korea did the coordinate the attack. and president said he hopes the sony executives had spoken to him before scrapping the movie. >> do not get into a pattern in which you're intimidated by these kinds of criminal attacks. >> i would be fibbing to say i wasn't disappointed. >> reporter: that's sony ceo michael linton. linton disagrees with obama saying he talked to senior white house and said it was the move industry theaters coming to sony saying they would not

show the film and therefor it was only then that linton said they had no other solution than to pull the movie. >> we have not caved, we have not back down. we have always had every desire to have the american public see this movie. >> reporter: north korea the president says will hear from america. >> we will respond. we will respond proportionally and we will respond in a place and time and manner that we choose. >> reporter: sony entertainment ceo was asked if he would make the movie again without hesitation, he said yes. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. olympic swimmer michael phelps the most decorated olympian was arrested today for drunken driving. the 18 time gold medalist received a suspended sentence.

people are tempted to drive after having a few drinks at a party. but law enforcement wants you to know they are watching and stepping up enforcement through the new year. debora villalon is live at a checkpoint with special significance tonight, deb. >> reporter: ken it was on this street, east moore that daly city saw one of the worse crashes ever. it killed a mother and her son. the only survivor talked to us today. 22-year-old cara sangra walks with a cane. >> that's the call as a parent that you never want to get. >> reporter: a call from the er. sarah was near death after a crash that killed her boyfriend amado, his younger brother josue and their mother. the four were driving to a movie. sarah was in a coma for two weeks. >> she finally told me, you're

the only one that survived the accident. you're the only one alive. i just kind of stared at the wall. >> reporter: this dui checkpoint is staffed not only by police officers but volunteers from mothers against drunk driving who themselves have lost loved ones. every day in the u.s. about 28 people die in drunk driving deaths. more than 10,000 annually. the population of the city of piedmont. december is a particularly deadly month with so much socializing around the holidays. >> the difficulty to say. it's hard to believe because it's all three at once. >> reporter: joseph asorio lost his cousins and aunt that night. behind dui stats are shattered lives, yet drinkers persist like the man who killed his family. >> you know somebody who had a dui before knew the consequences, and still decided to get behind the wheel again. >> reporter: the family is

four pedestrians. margo bernstein appeared in cuffs before a judge. she is suspected of driving while under the influence of prescription medications. marcelo strummer was found guilty in the death of kumra. during a home invasion robbery at kumra's monte cerrito home. trials for the other two suspects are set for next year. the family of a bay area highway patrol officer killed in the line of duty helped put finishing touches on a special honor of him today. a portrait is expected to be placed in a float recognizing organ donors. his organs helped save the life of several people.

new numbers out today show california employers added more than 100,000 jobs in november making it one of the strongest months for job growth in years.

the hiring boom pushed california unemployment rate down to seven -- 7.2. some of those new jobs are in construction. one of the fastest growing sectors in california adding more than 40,000 jobs during the past year. even on this rainy friday it was a busy day at the redwood job site. some workers there told us they had work lined up even before they graduated from training programs. >> a lot of jobs available right now. and we work during the rain, the recession, whatever. >> bay area jobless rates remain well below the state average. marin has the lowest at 3.9%. on wall street stocks ended a turbulent week with modest gains. the nasdaq gained 17. today's sessions extended two days of strong rallies after the federal reserve said it would not seek to raise interest rates in the near future. a week after a two day walk

out restaurant workers at sfo today announced a tentative agreement. the new agreement would provide job security and affordable health care along with pay and pension increases. restaurant managers call it quote an important step. the contract runs six years. the union members are set to vote on the new contract monday. the settlement with the city of bakersfield calls for the rail authority to study an alternate rout through the current county. it could be faster and cost less to build. the bolts on the east bay the bridge will remain in place. the panel voted to leave potentially problematic rods in place following a series of tests by engineer and metal experts. the review found the bolts

will come in very handy this christmas. we're tracking showers that are around as we move into the week. i know a lot of folks have next week off. the kids were off today for a couple of weeks for christmas. we have a few showers still lingering out there. the clouds are out there for sure and i'm getting reports of fog in the north bay. we'll talk about that. let's take a look at some of the showers that were randomly scattered around right now. san jose had showers. they're moving a little bit to the north and east. as we work our way a little bit. you can see showers showing up around the oakland area: but really light stuff. so it's winding down. but there will be some drizzle in that type of thing tonight and tomorrow. as we go through the day. there's going to be a lot of clouds around. so the fog is back. i have a report of a doze of fog up in napa and santa rosa. fog back in the forecast. it'll be around tomorrow morning and the big valley too and it'll be around especially sunday morning. i say this because a lot of

folks get moving around. high pressure set up. it keeps us drier. because it might be a little drizzle but it also has a ton of clouds to spill over the top. it also sets us up with a lot of fog in the valley. tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m., showers north bay. tahoe showers, then here we are tomorrow night at 7:00. tomorrow is one of these days there will be a few sprinkles around. it won't be a great day. a chance of sprinkles 7:00 a.m. sunday. here's your better day and here comes your sunday afternoon. the sun comes out and sunday looks like the best warmest day. saturday is not half bay. it's going to be nice but not half bay. sunday a nicer day. and we continue with that. we're in a situation where we're starting to wind down in terms of the heavy rain that we've been seeing for the last three weeks. the last 10 days or so we've had quite a bit of rain and we're going to get a rain from that. with temperatures that will get back into what you see in the five day.
