we begin with developing news. that developing news taking place in brooklyn, new york. within the past hour, new york city police commissioner bill bratton revealed details about the execution-style shootings of two of his officers. bratton became emotional, talking about officers wenjin liu and raphael ramos. he says the two were in their patrol car on a street corner in bedford stuyvesant when 28- year-old ismaaiyl brinsley approached their vehicle. >> he took a shooting stance on the passenger side and fired the weapon, his weapon several times through the front passenger window, striking both officers in the head. >> investigators say that brinsley then ran inside a subway station and shot and killed himself. officials say brinsley has boasted online about plans to shoot police and is suspected of shooting his girlfriend in baltimore just this morning. new york city mayor bill de blasio said the shootings were an attack on all new yorkers.

neighborhood and taking packages right from the front door. cristina rendon has video of the couple in action. >> reporter: that's right. we talked to several people who live around the valley and they know this type of crime is common, especially during the holidays, but they are hoping someone recognizes the people in the video you're about to see and tips off police. it happened thursday afternoon in this valley neighborhood. a couple is caught on surveillance video stopping at this home. the man walks up to the front porch and leaves with an item that isn't his. it's an upsetting sight for neighbors. >> it's pretty rude. it's not happening just in this neighborhood. it's happening all over the city. >> reporter: this video is making its way in and around the valley on the social media site nextdoor. >> i saw the video. it was, like, bingo, it was the guy. >> reporter: mark o'neill believes he had a run-in with the same man outside his house on friday. he says the man had several boxes with him and was in a hurry to leave. >> he grabs his bike and tried to take off.

i said you forgot the box. there was this big-box by my door. he goes, it's not mine, it's not mine, and he took off. >> reporter: the box was full of children's toys, addressed to one of o'neill's neighbors. the thefts come at a time when deliveries are increasing and people are expecting packages in time for the holidays. there's even been reports of people's mail being stolen, all the more reason neighbors are keeping an eye out. >> hope this gets out there and everybody sees this guy, yeah, definitely. >> reporter: and waiting for someone to recognize the couple. during the season of giving, they say others shouldn't be stealing and they want these two held accountable for what was caught on tape. >> i personally would just love to bust 'em, but, you know, same time, please leave this neighborhood. it's gotta stop. >> a report has been filed with the san francisco police department. if you have any information or recognize those two on video, you're asked to call authorities. at post offices across the

bay area, it was a day of hurry up and wait. the last chance to get packages mailed in time for christmas with standard shipping was today. long lines this afternoon of gift-givers waiting at the downtown berkeley pull-up post office. many of them with multiple packages in hand. but one customer said the holiday service moved along fairly quickly. >> i saw the line and i expected a long wait. so, you know, so it wasn't -- not too bad today. >> if you didn't make it today, tuesday is the deadline for sending packages using overnight service. flat rate boxes for priority mail express start at $20, or you may be able to save a few bucks by weighing your package at home and buying the postage online. a pilot in marin county walked away from a small plane crash this afternoon. that mishap took place at about 12:45 at the private airport there on smith ranch road in san rafael. as the pilot was taking off, the home made thorpe t-18 dove and flipped over onto the

airport field. the pilot met first responders on the runway, refused treatment and the airport closed briefly while the plane was cleared from the area. uc santa cruz police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a woman at knife point. the attack happened thursday night in a uc campus parking lot, as the victim got into her car. the attacker came out of the back seat with a knife, then demanded the woman drive. she was able to escape, but the man got away. today, police released this sketch of the man. he's described as white, in his twenties, 5' 9 tall with a scruffy blonde or light brown hair and also a beard of several days' growth. he was last seen wearing a gray hoodie. in martinez, police there are investigating a shooting that killed a woman whose brother was killed exactly five years ago. police say the shooting happened last night about 9:30 on the 1900 block of boynton avenue. a residential area not far from downtown. 18-year-old judith lee rene

bean was pronounced dead at the scene. a man was also injured, but is expected to survive. bean's brother, eric, was killed back in 2009, also when he was 18, in a high-profile crime that included torture. bean's father told the mercury news he did not believe the killing of his son and daughter are related. now to new information involving the sony cyber attack. north korea says it's being framed by the u.s. as the culprit in the attack. the north korea foreign ministry said today it knows how to prove it's not responsible for hacking and the government proposed conducting a joint investigation with the u.s. the cyber attack exposed tens of thousands of confidential sony e-mails and business files. meantime, sony says it's looking for a new way to distribute the controversial film "the interview," which of course you may remember canceled in the wake of threats. as will carr explains, the white house applauds that plan. >> reporter: sony pictures is looking for alternative ways to release "the interview," the

comedy about a plot to assassinate north korea's leader, kim jong-un. the company canceled the christmas day release after hackers threatened attacks on movie theaters. the white house is applauding sony's plan to distribute the movie on a different platform. in a statement, the spokesman says we are pleased to hear sony is actively working to distribute the film. people should be able to decide for themselves whether or not they would like to see it. the fbi believes north korea is behind the cyber attack and president obama has vowed the u.s. will respond. >> they caused a lot of damage and we will respond. we will respond proportionally and we'll respond in a place and time and manner that we choose. >> it could include some form of sanctions, could include moving closer to south korea in some kind of a pivot. one of the key things you have is the discussion of proportionally and the recognition that any kind of acts have the potential to escalate, and you also need to

appreciate what's the motives behind a place like north korea, how much credibility do we give them in the world if we overreact? >> reporter: north korea denies it was involved in the cyber attack and is now calling for a joint investigation into the incident with the united states. north korea saying there will be grave consequences if the united states does not agree to that joint investigation. a spokesman for north korea going on to say they can prove they had nothing to do with the cyber attack. in los angeles, will carr, fox news. more than a million pounds of dry goods shipped to the port of oakland were sent back to india, this after inspectors found larvae of a small, but very damaging beetle. according to the usda, both alive and dead larvae from the capper beetle turned up in 1.2 million pounds of soybeans and 88,000 pounds of rice last month. the capper beetle is considered one of the world's most destructive pests, difficult to control because they are relatively resistent to many insecticides and fume gants.

a multicar vehicle -- multivehicle accident, rather, today, snarled traffic at the north end of the golden gate bridge near vista point. it happened at about 2:30 this afternoon on highway 101 at alexander avenue. the accident involved a limousine and two other vehicles, all of them traveling southbound. an ambulance was called to the scene, but there's no word of any injuries. the highway patrol called an alert at 2:40. all lanes were reopened about an hour and 10 minutes later. further north, though, weather caused traffic problems. flooding shut down the connection between highway 101 and highway 1 in mill valley for hours today. that connection appears to be restored tonight, but the same spot is expected to flood again tomorrow due to the combination of rain and extreme high tides associated with the solstice. low gas prices, giving people an extra incentive to hit the road for the holidays. in east bay, we found gas prices as low as $2.49 a gallon. now, according to gasbuddy.com, the average price of gas around

. for all of you procrastinators, there are now just five shopping days until christmas. today is predicted to be the biggest shopping day of the year. it's called supersaturday and retailers are doing their best to try to motivate shoppers to spend more, offering special deals and also extended hours. analysts say shoppers will spend $10 billion today alone. as ktvu's allie rasmus explains, when it comes to total sales, today actually tops black friday. >> reporter: before customers filed in, carts full of boxes and crates filled the aisles at target in emeryville. workers raced to unload and unpack two overnight truckloads of inventory before the store

selection of that. >> reporter: but there's still plenty of selection, and for those who aren't stressed about their shopping list, plenty of time. >> sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, yeah, four more days. wednesday's definitely last- minute! >> reporter: in emeryville, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. more details now. we want to show you how it looked at the toys r us in emeryville when it opened at 6:00 this morning. it will remain open until 2:00 a.m. then this coming week, toys r us will stay open for 39 hours straight, from 6:00 a.m. tuesday until 9:00 p.m. wednesday, christmas eve. the holiday shopping marathon is also on at macy's. many of the store locations will be open 7:00 a.m. to midnight through christmas eve. for serious shoppers, the san francisco union square store is once again staying open through christmas eve. it opened at 7:00 yesterday morning and will remain open until december 24th at 6:00 p.m. that's 131 straight hours.

well, chrysler is expanding a recall of cars and trucks equipped with takata air bags. the automaker will now replace driver's side air bags in 2.9 million vehicles in the u.s. and several thousand worldwide. the initial u.s. recall was limited to a few states, where it was believed that heat and humidity would increase the chance of those air bags to explode. but chrysler faced mounting pressure from federal regulators to expand that recall nationwide. president obama and his family are taking a break from washington for the rest of the month. it's nothing but sunshine and sand for the first family as they begin a two-week vacation in honolulu. the president and his family spent the first morning of their vacation at a home in a seaside town. it's an annual tradition that began before their time in the white house. vallejo police handed out

hundreds of gifts to children today. >> merry christmas! >> officers delivered more than 750 toys to low income children, with some help from the big guy himself, to the delight of many, santa was on hand to oversee the goodie goodaway. the toys and money to buy everything were donated by community members and business owners in vallejo. >> we're taking pictures with santa, just doing whatever we can to brighten some of these youngsters' days, and at the same token, it's really helping us feel good about what it is we're doing here. >> lieutenant dejesus said many of the toys delivered today were given away in neighborhoods where police have been called in to respond to some pretty serious crimes. he said it was a great feeling to return with gifts and some people were moved to tears by the officers' efforts. and hundreds of east bay children getting a new bike for christmas, thanks to the efforts of the san leandro police department. today, the san leandro police officers association handed out

snowboarder's delight. boreal reports a foot of new snow fell during the past 24 hours and more is anticipated, but it's warming up a bit with temperatures above freezing forecast for both today -- rather tomorrow and monday. want to check now on your bay area forecast and our meteorologist mark tamayo is tracking a little bit more rain for us. >> just a few showers out there, heather. over the past few weeks, we've been tracking multiple storms out there, multiple rain clouds. the weather pattern changing up a bit. you see scattered rain on the radar, especially north of the bay area, also towards the sierra. good news there, snowfall totals over the past 24 hours with the storm totals around 6 to 12 inches. a nice dusting, actually more than a dusting up in the mountains. let's talk about the scattered showers in the region. there's a live doppler sweet and a few showers out to the east of santa rosa, towards st. helena, and as we move the maps to the south, few showers toward balinas. still have enough moisture to create heavy mist or drizzle,

enough to wet the roadways. mostly cloudy skies out there. looking toward san francisco, the san francisco lights for your saturday evening, here is your forecast with weather headlines. still the chance of a few showers in the short-term. winter begins, winter solstice tomorrow afternoon and a dry weather pattern developing over the next week. as far as the sierra snow, you heard about the totals. you can see sugar bowl, alpine meadows, squaw valley and the chance of a few more scattered snow showers in the forecast for tonight. back here in the bay area, we do have a flood advisory posted for the coast and the bay, not really because of the rainfall, but because of the extreme tides. this in place for sunday, monday and into tuesday. you can see for reference, the high tides at the golden gate bridge tomorrow up a bit. for the king tides basically for sunday and into monday, comes down just a tiny bit into tuesday. so lots of inflated water levels right around the bay itself, over the next few mornings, into the early portion of the afternoon. there is the chance of a shower first thing tomorrow morning. lots of clouds out there and
