complete bay area news conch starts right now. -- coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 o'clock news. two new york city police officers ambushed and killed sitting in their squad car. it's a time of rising tension between police and the community they serve. police across the country are in mourning after the two new york city police officers were shot point blank in the head sitting in their patrol car. the slain officers have been identified tonight at a 40-year-

old ramos and officer loo. he was a newly wed married just months ago. the other has been on the force since 2012. he leaves behind a wife and 13- year-old son. we get more on the officers kill, and new information about the gunman. >> reporter: a gunman ambushing two new york city officers in the brooklyn. both shot in the head point blank range as they sat inside their patrol car. the shooter ran inside a nearby subway station and fatally shot himself. >> today two of new york's fine errs were shot without warning or provocation, they were quite simply assassinated. >> they were shot execution

style. particularly despicable act which goes to the very heart of our society and our democracy. >> reporter: the suspect believed to be a gang member from baltimore. he shot and wounded his girlfriend in baltimore just hours before the officers. >> we don't support anybody shooting our police officers in our communities. two rights don't make a wrong. >> reporter: the shooter boasting about his plan on social media, and references the death of garner and brown. the suspect posting quote i'm putting wings on pigs today. they take one of ours, let's take two of theirs. baltimore authorities sent the nypd a fax warning them about the man.

the officers were killed just minutes later. al sharpton said he was outraged by the officers' death. he said any use of names of garner and brown in connection with any violence or killing of police is reprehensible and against the pursuit of justice in both cases. he says he and the garner family plan to hold a news conference tomorrow. the investigation into the police killings in new york will look at whether the gunman took police in any recent antipolice protests, but the killings come as cities across the country deal with issues with police. we talked to a veteran police captain here, and he expects officers everywhere are more on guard right now. >> this man may have been a criminal with a grudge and a

community oriented, i can see, i can literally see the community in a frenzy. >> the mayor arrived outside the hospital, and officers turned their backs on him. they say he hasn't done enough to support them. we reached out to local police unions for comment, and heard back from oakland that the police department flag will be lowered, and officers will wear black arm bands. i imagine other local departments will do the same. >> yes, absolutely. thank you. in minnesota today chanting demonstrators filled the mall of america. organizers of the black lives party rally said 3,000 people planned to attend the event, and there were enough people

for the mall to go into partial lock down with several stores closed on the one of the busiest shop ising days of the year. police arrested five people. now, an abduction, santa cruz police hope they'll find the man at the center of this investigation. the man was armed. >> reporter: the campus nearly deserted, many students home for the holidays, but police say what happened to one student is the stuff of nightmares. >> what had happened the student was walking to her car, and when she interested the car on the driver's side, a man emerged with a knife, and told

her to start the car. >> reporter: she had her wits about her, and she was able to run to a car nearby and call 911. officers say she didn't recognize the man. police say it happened here in the north perimeter parking lot. it's a particularly remote part of the campus. the suspect ran off. more michael, a biology students, it shakes his sense of security on a campus with many remote areas. >> i always assume we're pretty safe here, but i obviously know that's false. you hear about this kind of stuff happening once in a while, and it's shocking. >> it's highly unusual for the campus, and we like to keep a safe campus, but unfortunately these events happen, and it's good for everyone to be aware of surroundings, walk in pairs if you can. >> reporter: police released this sketch of the suspect, white, about five-nine, 150 to 160 pounds, scuff, with blond

hair. this happened about 7:00 p.m. thursday when other students were around, and anyone with information is urged to call campus police. flooding caused traffic troubles today, a section of highway 101 near highway 1 was off limits for hours today, and the same spot is expected to flood again tomorrow due to the combination of rain and extreme high tides. flooding today also effected freeway ramps. and now a look at road conditions in the sierras. traffic moving smoothly when he checked tonight. any snow or flooding could impact holiday travel plan, but right now aaa predicts this holiday season will be the

december 19th, 2009 also when he was 18 in a high profile crime. three men were convicted and sent to prison for his murder, today her father told the news he doesn't believe the killings of his son and daughter are related. the chp released new information about the bay area connections of an officer who shot a teen. the teen attacked the officer with a machete outside eureka. the 17-year-old died at the scene. the officer is in stable condition at the hospital. >> it's pretty rude. it's not just happening in this neighborhood, it's all over the

investigation into the incident. this comes as sony looks for a way to release the film that led to the cyber attack. >> reporter: sony is looking for alternative ways to release the interview. the company canceled the film's christmas day release after hackers threatened attack on theaters. the white house is aplowedding the plan to distribute it on a different platform, they're pleased to hear they're working to distribute the film. people should be able to decide for themselves whether or not to see it. the fbi believes north korea is behind the cyber attack, and president obama vowed the us will respond. >> we will respond proportionately, and in a place and time and manner that we choose. >> could include some form of sages, or moving closer to --

sanctions or moving closer to south korea in a pivot. one of the key things you have is a discussion of proportionality, the recognition acts can escalate. >> reporter: north korea is now calling a joint investigation, and denies being involved in the incident. they said there will be grave consequences if the united states doesn't agree to the joint investigation, a spokesman for north korea going on to say they can prove they had nothing to do with the cyber attack. president obama and his family are in hawaii for the holidays. they touched down early this morning after a flight on air force one. plans call for them to spend about two weeks in a vacation home. people are accustomed to seeing the president out and about in the neighborhood and on island golf courses.

just four shopping days until christmas, and time is running out for every to buy, and for the stores to sell. experts call today super saturday, and predicted it would be the biggest shopping day of the year. in fact analysts expected 10 board of directors would be spent today alone -- billion dollars today alone. >> reporter: before customers filed in, carts full of boxes and crates filled the hours at target. workers raced to unload and up pack two overnight -- unpack two overnight truck loads of
