officers. police brass and police unions in new jersey and boston are warning officers to take extra precautions. the words of warning come as police learn more about the gunman. kelly wright has the latest. >> reporter: police say izmael brisbey has been arrested 14 times. yesterday before the shooting he was angry at police for the killing deaths of michael brown and eric garner. before the shootings. >> reporter: he told them --

he told two men to follow him on instagram and watch what happens. ramos family is pleading for an end to the violence. >> i hope and pray that we can reflect on this tragic loss of life that has occurred so that we can move forward and find an amicable path to a peaceful existence. >> reporter: some are calling for mayor deblasio to take action. >> we need to work with the community and the police department. we don't need you to go to just one side. the police department needs you as well. >> we're asking all new yorkers to turn this pain into purpose and to ensure that we send a very clear and loud message. all lives matter. >> reporter: the shooting is drawing attention across the entire country. president obama condemned the

attack and expressed his condolences. in new york, kelly wright, fox news. police are still trying to determine brinsely's motive. they say he posted anti police messages on instagram. in that posthe referred to the death of garner and brown. today civil rights activist al sharpton and garner's family condemned the killing of the two police officers. >> we want you do not use eric garner name for violence because we are not about that. these two police officers lost their lives senselessly. >> if we go into an area where it's an eye for an eye, then it is only a matter of who can outpluck eyes rather than who can make the system fair for everybody. >> reporter: sharpton said those who use the names of people who have died at the hands of police to justify violence against officers are

hurting the victims families. investigators say before the police shooting, he shot and seriously wounded his ex- girlfriend. thompson is now in the hospital. it was thompson's mother who called police and alerted them about the anti police social media post. they called police and sent out a flier around 2: 2:45. the officers were shot about two hours later. jaden ramos said quote today i had to say goodbye to my father. he was there every day of my life. everybody says they hate cops

but they are the people they call for help. i will always love you and i will never forget you, rest in peace dad. today the new york yankees silver shields foundation offered to pay for any and all education for jaden ramos and his brother. since then that group has assisted 800 children. the other officer killed liu had no children. another police officer with links to the new york city police department was shot and killed in the line of duty today. this time in florida. 45-year-old charles kondek was shot after he was called to an apartment complex near tampa because someone was banging on doors. police say when officers arrive the 23-year-old transient shot and killed officer kondek. the suspect then got into a car but slammed into a pole and was

arrested. an investigation is under way in concord after a man was shot in the leg outside the b.a.r.t. station. police say it happened at about 10:30 last night as the victim was in line for a taxi right outside the station. a concord police spokesperson said the suspect drove up in a dark colored sedan. the victim had verbal exchange with someone in that vehicle before the shooter opened fire. a police stand off in placer county is over after sheriff deputies shot and killed a heavily armed man. >> you can hear the rapid sound of gunshots. it all started around 11:00 this morning when the suspect began shooting at homes in his auburn neighborhood. investigators say he sprayed his girlfriend with bear mace before holding police at bay for six hours. neighbors say the suspect threatened his girlfriend on

thanksgiving. >> she said that she was threatening to shoot her and kill her so i brought her in my house and while she was there i got a call from him. and he called me and then he started threatening me that he was going to come and shoot me. >> eventually the s.w.a.t. team deployed tear gas and minutes later the home erupted in flames. the suspect was killed after he refused to surrendered and fired at officers. neighbors describe him as a white man in his 50s with mental health issues. authorities are investigating a body found off interstate 80 in the north bay as suspicious. a passer by discovered that body on the shoulder of the westbound i80 off ramp in vallejo. investigators say it appears the man died sometime during the night. although an exact cause of death has not yet within determined. the man's name hasn 't been released pending notification of his family. people gathered for a

holiday festival there afternoon but today wasn't just about celebration. they were also rallying around a girl's family. jana liu has the story. >> reporter: it doesn't matter that p people were just meeting the family today. they embraced them. festive music, the tapping of dancing. this year jorge lopez was inspired to turn the annual event into a fundraiser. after seeing the story about 9- year-old jackie sumez. >> i heard it again on ktvu at

the time we were planning the posada. as a father i just felt compelled to do something. >> reporter: the oakland girl was playing outside her home on 66th avenue in may when she was hit by a stray bullet and paralyzed. an innocent girl who's life is now forever changed. >> we always try to pitch extended family to our students and the concept of extended family how important it is. especially in the immigrant community. it's so big because you know for us when i first -- we first immigrated to california we didn't have any family members. my mom didn't speak the language. so we were always dependent on our neighbors. >> reporter: through a translator, the unexpected turn of events has been extremely difficult but says jackie is learning to cope. at first she was very, very angry and we were saddened to see her anger because she would tell us i want to be normal. i want to go out and jump

outside. and i tell jackie every day that things will get better and that the lord will bless us every day. >> reporter: she is overjoyed by seeing a smile light up her daughter's face. >> i am very happy to see her happy. >> reporter: and jackie's mother gave a heartfelt thank you for all the help. >> cara, thank you. more details now on another group that is helping jackie. >> my brother with a paraplegic for many years. and he was very blessed. i felt we had to reach out and help those who also suffer from this injury. >> jackie was her first recipient. the foundation gave $5,000 and

plans to donate a wheelchair assessable van. and the latest in a string of fires. the latest was found on hartford street. that's not far from where four cars erupted in flames last week. the first of those fires was reported at 4:00 p.m. wednesday. within two hours, three more vehicles were torched. arson was suspected in those blazes. authorities have not said whether today's fire is related to today's blazes. authorities say a lightning bolt hit an suv in the parking lot and about a dozen fans standing by. witnesses say it knocked people to the ground. seven people were taken to the hospital while four others drove. one person is in critical condition. fire officials say it appears that no one was hit directly by the lightning which could have caused much more serious

injuries. san francisco airport restaurant workers are set to ratify a new contract tomorrow. the airport employees previously held a two week walk out. they were concerned about job security protections and health care coverage. the tentative six year deal includes more contributions to pensions. >> it was just wonderful. i was so happy for my kids. a unique holiday shopping trip that started with a police escort and continued

elenore chen and her family say the waves are so impressive. >> i wouldn't call it king tide, maybe prince tide. >> reporter: over in king valley, king tides caused the water to overflow. the road to stinson were closed down for some time. >> you kind of plan your day around when the high tide is. it's not good to go to certain areas when the tide is high. because you can't get through the roads. especially the road will flood here going to stinson beach. king tides show how low we are. >> in the neighborhoods, as they inundate marshes and challenge our sewage

help. when neighbors ran outside, investigators say the man -- man let the girl go. police arrested the 60-year-old man who has a record for violent offenses. "the interview" propertied a cyber attack on sony. and today mccain called it warfare. >> i don't think it was an act of war. i think it was an act of cyber vandalism that was very costly. very expensive. we take it very seriously. we will respond proportionately. >> on friday, president obama said he felt sony's decision to cancel the screenings of the interview was a mistake. sony has since said it's looking for ways to distribute the film. there are some reports that sony may release it on its own streaming service crackle but those reports have not yet been confirmed. three time world

heavyweight champion boxing great muhammad ali is in the hospital tonight with a mild case of pneumonia. ali went to the hospital this morning and the prognosis is good. no details on where ali is hospitalized. the 72-year-old old has long battled parkinsons disease. he did appear in november for the muhammad ali association. and coco disappeared as a brown dog with white markings. but turned out as a stray as a black dog. they identified her by her microchip. there are reports that she dug her way out of her yard and is missing again with her new darker hairdo. >> they need a stronger fence. the christmas spirit took hold of fans.

many arrived with new unwrapped toys for the u.s. marine corp.'s toys for tots drive. marines are changing to several locations. one sergeant spoke about why they were conducting their toy drive at a raiders game. >> it's football. it's as american as you get. i would like to believe that the spirit and the holiday spirit is within everybody right now. >> the toys collected at the oakland coliseum will be given to needy children all over alameda county. for the second day they collected donations curb side to get ready for that big event. ktvu's christien kafton was there and has more information on those not christmas spirit can help. >> reporter: chefs worked on dinner but they're also working on christmas dinner. the need is great this year as of sunday morning they collected fewer than 140 of the

500 hams needed to feed the 4,000 people the staff is expecting on christmas day and beyond. >> we stewart the donations that come in through between now and new year's day. that would be turkeys, hams, you know nonparishable items. we will meter those out throughout the month. >> reporter: food is just part of the equation. they've called on a number of volunteers and have also formed a nitting brigade. getting cold weather clothing for the winter months. volunteers are also working to collect curb side donations of food and clothing. one item always in need new pairs of socks. >> you need seven pairs of socks per week. people who are homeless and low income can afford one or two a week. the more we get the more we're going to pass out. >> what we tell our teenagers, you know even if it's one

thing, if you're not using it think of people who will be grateful in using it. >> reporter: st. anthony's is accepting curb side donations through christmas day but they say the need doesn't end there. they say they still need volunteers for a critical period between december 26 and january 3rd. in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu. an oakland church teamed up with -- more than 75 people were treated to a holiday party and a precooked meal. members of the church say it's a time for everyone in attendance to share a christmas dinner. >> we want them to know that they matter. that there's a church that cares for them. we want them to feel that they're somebody and they're as important to everybody else in the community. >> each guest was given a $75

recent headlines talk of strained relations. but today police in richmond helped build stronger ties with children in the communities they patrol. >> reporter: they rolled into the community center in style. richmond hughes received the

star holiday treatment. from the richmond police activities league or pal. >> it's just a fantastic community relations tool that we use to let richmond citizens and our youth to know we care about them. >> reporter: some bought gifts for themselves, others picked out presents for loved ones. the hopes is by spending a few hours socializing with police, bonds will be built between children and police officers. a unique experience that only happens once a year but aims to have a lasting impact. this year p.a.l. surprised every child with gifts and a new set of wheels. >> it was just wonderful. i was so happy for my kids. so this has been a great merry christmas for my children. >> looks like they had a great time there. richmond police have been doing

this for six years. local business owners helped out with donations. all those bicycles were donated by richmond university company. there's a big deadline the state of california is going to miss on driverless cars. and the messages of support from police departments big and small.

in a brooklyn neighborhood not far from where those two new york city police officers were ambushed and killed, a man remembers one of the slain officers. he says that officer ramos was a devoted husband and a man who
