a moving target. >> reporter: the landslide and the geography that it changed and all of the trees that have fallen. >> reporter: a landslide yesterday took out trees and exposed the roots like a threadbare sweater that ripped open a gaping hole. >> the earth is really wet. so it doesn't take much for it to slide. and there's a lot of trees that have gone down. it is how the geography changes with the landscape. >> in fact, landslides here have changed the landscape throughout history. adolf sutro had a rail line that went through land's end until a landslide stopped the train in its tracks. the u.s. geological survey says land's end sits on a historic deep seated landslide. so the placement is not unusual, but the timing is. bedrock slides tend to happen in very wet years and despite recent rains, we are in a dry

sprinkle. it moved quickly. nothing really changed. the models timed this thing out pretty nicely. rainfall accumulations were light. it was moving pretty good. it was cooking and when they do that, it is tough to leave much behind. san francisco .04. it is neat. there was a time when these numbers were like wow, we would be adding them up and looking at percents of average, but because we have had so much rain in the last three weeks, it isn't really necessary. we are well over 100%. 200% of average this time of year which is great news. the rainfall out there now is mainly shifted to the south and to the east right? and you have some snowfalling up around donor summit. echo summit. showers down south. so, the showers moving out into southern california. for us, we are setting up with a little bit of a cool night ahead and a much colder night as we head into friday morning and saturday morning. here are the forecasts overnight lows for tonight. it is a little breezy. fog not as much of an issue as

it has been. tomorrow morning, christmas day, it will be chilly, it will be colder still. when i come back, we will detail the forecast not just for tomorrow, but the rest of your holiday week. ly see you back here of the break. >> thanks bill. earlier today, protesters marched through the streets of san francisco calling for an end to police violence. under the banner black lives matter. there were more than 100 demonstrators from the lgbt community. they marched down market street and had a die-in at the castro street interception and shut down the octavia boulevard off ramp from highway 101 and had a moment of silence for minorities killed by police officers. >> this is imperative that we all show up and unite. a solid front to apply some pressure. we want an immediate end to police brew all-starty. >> the demonstration follows the decision by grand juries not to indict police officers

in the deaths of michael brown in ferguson, missouri and eric garner in new york. the presidents of the san jose san francisco and oakland police unions say antipolice fieldings have reached a dangerous level. in an open letter, they called for a constructive dialogue to express concerns over the relationship between minorities and police officers. they say protests over the last few weeks have evolved from an expression of views into violence against public servants. it is not too late to make a child's christmas miracle a reality. ktvu channel 2 news' christian kafton is there live. traffic has been steady all day. what is it like right now? >> reporter: they had some fake snow. christmas music. nay are hoping to get about

10,000 donations. the rain today slowed down rotations a little bit. there are 6500 toys now. they need 3500 toys before the night is over. a steady stream of people dropping off toys to make children's dreams come true. >> we are very fortunate. we wanted our daughter to get a chance to give. >> reporter: it is not too late to give santa a helping hand. >> they can drop off until last call and they will get into the hands of kids. >> reporter: across town instead of his sled, people are unloading a u-haul in the bay view district. row after row after kids lined up to pick out that perfect gift. >> tell me what you got? >> a doll and a spiderman.

>> reporter: kelly says her son will have a merry christmas thanks to one of santa's many helpers this holiday season. >> i can't provide as much as i would like. so it means the world to me. >> reporter: guys there still collecting. they will be collecting toys until closing time at about 2:00 here. they say even the ones brought in last minute will still make it under some needy kid's tree by christmas morning. back to you guys. >> and you told us earlier, they are still looking for gifts for tweens and teenagers? >> yes. >> reporter: they say the perfect gift, you want to make sure those kids are remembered christmas morning as well. gift cards and cash always works. there are a lot of people dropping off cash donations. they are using the cash to buy things like video games.

delays this morning because of fog. but everything is back on track this hour. >> hawaiian airlines passengers headed to honolulu are arriving sever hours late as their plane diverted to the bay area. this is the boeing 767 landing in the airport this morning. flight 19 took off from san francisco around 9:30 this morning headed for honolulu, but there was a mechanical problem in the cockpit and they decided to divert to oakland. the plane circled over the ocean a few times before finally landing at oakland. the passengers are expected to arrive in honolulu in about one hour. and bad behavior by state employees is costing you money. >> it is called the wishing tree. we will show you how wishes are filling hearts and minds on this holiday season. >> and we just got an update on santa. we heard he is making his way

beyonce. >> we really are what this song is. >> reporter: they are not letting their past define them. >> these are beautiful imperfections. this is what makes me me. >> reporter: but they know it has shaped them. >> it makes a difference. >> high clap, there you go! >> and that was melanie woodrow reporting. a special street in san francisco is attracting a lot of attention this holiday season. it is not a christmas tree, it's a wishing tree. a place for a lot of strangers have gathered since 2011 to leave a wish or a note of gratitude tied to the tree's branches. david stevenson met the woman to find out how this tree changed her life. >> reporter: this victorian box tree is in bloom. >> this is really a nice touch to the neighborhood. >> reporter: the wishing tree bears the hopes, dreams, and wishes of hundreds of strangers

and friends young and old. >> i'm thinking it is great that so many people do it. >> reporter: three years ago during an unhappy time in her life, child therapist vanessa sabarise began sharing messages on the tree outside her house and encouraged people to do it themselves. >> i thought people wouldn't take it seriously but they did. i think it is a place for people to sit and be with themselves and listen to their hearts. >> i have paper and i have a pen. >> i don't know how to write. >> you can draw! >> reporter: for neighborhood children, the tree is a place to request something as simple as a new toy for christmas or to share their anxieties about the wilder world. >> to be happy and not have a world war three. >> have a good year. >> reporter: the first year, 200 wishes were posted to the tree. so far this holiday season, there have been 650 and sabarise expects more over the next few days.

store. take the jackets if you are going outside. no coastal fog. very little valley fog if any. we have a good breeze with that front wind this afternoon. and the winds will be kind of just breezy this evening. that is just enough a little bit. the wind is enough to break up the valley fog or radiation fog cycle. so overnight lows will be chilly. we talked about that. tomorrow morning is cool. like 38 in santa rosa. 39, in saint helena. but lows will be in the 30s friday morning and saturday morning. and the fog will want to come back too. but not yet. not tomorrow. so the way this sets off, the low drops in. it is actually a pretty cold one. it drops snow levels as well. it has pushed the rain through. now the cold air is going to sit over the top to us. it has been brought in by the breezy conditions and we just slowly try to warm up. so remember, yesterday, we had record heat. tomorrow's temperatures will be in the 50s . yesterday, we had temperatures almost in the 70s . tomorrow, we will have temperatures almost in the 60s

. it is a big drop off. a dry weather pattern all the way to new year's. show you where the jet stream is. saturday, sunday, you can see the time sunday at 7:00. monday, the jet stream is way up there. that is how you know it is not going to rain. tuesday, new year's eve. that is a big ridge of high pressure. if that is me and i have relatives in town and i have the week off, i'm at point reyes, the coast. you go skiing up in the mountains. classic california weather for the holidays an plenty of rain. we can smile about it. we have a lot of rain in the last few weather systems as a matter of fact. some places like oakland got 50% of their rainfall accumulation for the year. 50% of it. in just that ten day period. so forecast highs tomorrow. about upper 50s , low 60s . not much different the following days. a little more sunshine. fog wants to return friday, saturday, sunday, monday. steady as she goes.
