traffic throughout the morning. >> you're actually brian, dave and sal today. >> there you go. the christmas spirit is definitely on display at the san francisco salvation army. we are there this morning as volunteers and workers are making sure that no one is left out this holiday season. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. merry christmas to you. we are inside the salvation army kitchen where there's about 40 volunteers hard at work and been here since 5:00 this morning putting together about 4,000 christmas meals. and we will go down the line and give you a look at the menu. first scooping yams into the trays followed by the scoops of carrots and green beans. about 750 pounds of carrots. and then move on to the next course, the main course and that's the ham. they've spent the last three to four days cooking all this ham because they have 1200 pounds of it. and then each of these trays

are heat sealed so that they can be packaged and delivered to people in need. and now she is with the salvation army. merry christmas to you. >> merry christmas to you. >> reporter: who is receiving all these meals today? >> so these meals are specifically made for the elderly or for those home bound individuals who too frail to get out of their homes and visit one of the other locations in san francisco. we want to make sure that no one is left out and everyone has a nice meal on christmas day. >> reporter: and these meals get to them by volunteers. some of the recipients, the volunteers who deliver the meals may be the only people they see. >> yeah, because they're too frail to get out, they're in their homes and we tell our volunteers, don't just take the meal and drop it off, say merry christmas, visit with them. and make sure you spread that holiday spirit. and what we find is not only

does the recipient love that, but the volunteer gets a lot out of that as well. it goes both ways. >> reporter: as we have found here talking to some of the volunteers, some have made this a family tradition. one family has brought several members for six to eight years coming every christmas morning to do it. and now once all the meals get assembled, 4,000 of them, they'll be transported to a community center and that's where another 400 volunteers will be waiting to deliver them in their personal vehicles throughout the city to the people in need. and we will be following the process all throughout the morning and we will check back with outbies in about half an hour. back to you. >> what a wonderful way for them to share the holiday. lovely. thank you. final preparations under way for the annual christmas day dinner at st. anthony's dining room. chefs and volunteers arrived early this morning to begin preparing meals for an

estimated 4,000 people at that hall. that's on golden gate avenue. and the first meals are scheduled at 10:00 this morning. san francisco's glide memorial church is getting ready to host big christmas meals. the church will serve breakfast to thousands of needy families this morning. and there will be a christmas dinner at glide later today also. and meantime, thousands of people took part in a holiday tradition on the day before christmas. volunteers served prime rib with all the fixings to 3,000 guests. joe best donated 2200 pounds of meat for the lunch. bets is the owner of san francisco's famed house of prime rib restaurant. >> sometimes we take it for granted how well we eat. but for this folks, it's not an automatic. so when you give something, it really feels good. i love to do it. >> that's great.

this is the 23rd year bets has made the prime rib lunch possible. well it's the most talked about movie in america, the film "the interview" opens across the country today. it went online yesterday. and we are in berkeley at one theater here in the area that will be showing the film. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, on the website, they list the interview as a movie showing today. and although it's not up on the marquee, we know the first showing is at noon and then four screenings after that. and you can also stream this movie on youtube as well as google play. and now last wednesday, sony pulled the interhave you from the scheduled christmas day national release in response to threats of violence from an online group allegedly from north korea. it's about a plot against north korea's leader kim jong-un. in washington, some members of congress are urging even tougher sanctions against north korea. the fbi saying that kim jong-un was responsible for the hack

20-hour last day toy drive. and we saw alex sing by the way. >> we. >> the and all the doll, action figures and play sets were distributed as quickly as they came in. toys went to chapels and churches in the area. >> he got it. 10:00 this morning, 3,000 toys will be delivered to the christmas in the toy give away program in the western addition. and starting in two hours, a group of firefighters, they get to play santa. they'll drive-thru the neighborhood and pass out toys and bikes to kids. yesterday the firefighters handed out toys to hundreds of kids. the san francisco toy program began way back in 1949. it's the oldest program of its kind in the nation. firefighters, their union and volunteers give out more than 200,000 toys year-round. >> so fabulous. pope francis delivered a

at the gas station where a white officer shot and killed an 18-year-old african-american man on tuesday night. police made several arrests last night including some for property damage. and news cameras also captured an object that was hurled at police officers but in one was hit. and city leaders say this case is different from ferguson because the 18-year-old had first pointed this gun at the officer. police have released a couple of videos from the gas station which they say show it was martin and not the officer who initiated the action. however, the mayor there is promising a thorough investigation ask says he will not tolerate police brutality on citizens. 2,000 miles away last night, a group of people in california stood in solidarity with the people in missouri. the bay area group held a small individual it at martin luther king park. they say they needed a way to express outrage and concern over what has been happening in

the u.s. protesters in san francisco called for an end to police violence. >> more than 100 hit the streets, many from the lgbt community. the march included a die-in. and the group briefly shut down the off-ramp and held a moment of silence for minorities who have been killed by police. the former president george hw bush remains in the hospital after experiencing shortness of breath. doctors admitted the former president on tuesday. a spokesman says the prognosis for the 90-year-old bush remains positive two. years ago, he spent seven weeks at the same hospital where he was treated for bronchitis. the recent wet weather is making it difficult to get to one of the most scenic views in san francisco. parts of the lands are closed after a mud slide. the moving earth took trees with it and created a gaping hole. signs have been posted with warnings that the area is

of the day. and oakland reporting 10 miles per hour and napa 8 and santa rosa 9. when you have cool conditions outside and that wind, it will feel even colder than 3 8 degrees. and maybe closer to 34 or 32. and 34 in walnut creek. you're near freezing. 37 in hayword. and 46 in napa. these numbers definitely colder than where we started yesterday morning. along the peninsula, low 40s in areas like foster city. we will do one last shot here and take a look at these numbers. temperatures will remain on the cool side as we get into the second half of the afternoon. under mostly sunny skies for today. santa rosa to 58. and looking at upper 50s for berkeley. san francisco checking in at 58. and do you remember just a few days ago, monday, tuesday, wow, it was warm out there. and these numbers quite

welcome back everybody. time now 6:25. and the centers for disease control is monitoring one employee for possible exposure to the ebola virus. they'll be doing that for 20 days. the exposure risk occurred during an experiment at a cdc lab in atlanta. a spokesperson says there's no risk to the public. nearly 20,000 people have been infected with ebola in africa

leading to more than 7500 deaths. meantime, britain's queen is using her annual christmas broadcast to praise med cool workers fighting ebola in africa. she says she's been deeply touched by the doctors and nurses on the front lines against the outbreak. her prerecorded message is being broadcast today. the queen plans to celebrate the holiday with her husband prince phillip at the royal estate in england. well one special christmas tree in san francisco's valley is getting more and more attention every holiday season. it is known as the wishing tree. it's decorated with hundreds of handwritten notes from people expressing their hopes and dreams. the first wishing tree went up three years ago. she then invited others to do the same. >> i thought maybe i would get some joke wishes and people wouldn't take it seriously. but people did take it seriously. i think it's a place for people to just sit and be with themselves and actually listen

to their heart. >> so far, there are more than 650 messages posted on the wishing tree this year. and that number is expected to grow during this final week of the holiday season. well this next story from sacramento easily fits into the christmas miracle category. a dog is now recovering after falling off a 15 story balcony from a downtown high-rise this week. the owner explained how the 13- year-old boston terrier managed to survive the big fall. >> just a little bit to the east of the balcony is a pool and a hot tub. and the dog went directly into the hot tub and started swimming to try to get out. and he swam about three time, found the stairs, pulled himself out. >> well the dog is now being treated for a cracked pelvis and broken ribs at a animal hospital. the vet there expects him to make a full recovery. wow. coming up, a uc berkeley

they've got going here where volunteers are putting together 4,000 christmas meals that will be delivered to people in need. and they start out with the trays and scoop the yam and move down the line, there you can see the carrots and green beans and about 750 pounds of carrots that they prepared for meals. and further down, that's the main course. ham, they've been working on cooking this ham for the last three to four days because they had a lot to cook. about 1200 pounds are going into the meals and. once everything is in the tray, then it gets heat sealed. and all of the work is being done by salvation army staff and about 40 volunteers including first time volunteers this morning. tell me why you decide to do this today. >> i'm in town, usually out of town with my family. and i just wanted to give back. and this seemed like a good opportunity to spend christmas morning with other people. >> reporter: what do you think of your experience so far?

>> it's been wonderful. so nice and do this for people home bound who don't have opportunities to be served, you know, it's really nice to be part of that and give back at this time. >> reporter: thank you so much. first time volunteer with the salvation army. and as she mentioned, the people receiving these meals include a lot of elderly folks and people who aren't physically able to leave their homes to head down for a christmas meal. and now part of the operation and this, not just the people cooking here in the kitchen, but about 300 to 400 volunteers using their personal cars to drive these meals. and transport these meals to the folks in need. so about an hour from now when we come back and check in with you guy, we will show you the process of getting boxes loaded up as the meals head out to people who need them. back to you. >> all rightment labor of love and giving. >> that's for sure. >> thank you so much.

well christians from all over the world gathered for a christmas day mass today. >> this was the scene at the church of the nativity. it's built on the site where jesus was born. each year, thousands of christians go to beth le hem. and authorities -- bethlehem. president barack obama is joined by his wife as he delivers a holiday themed message and they focused on sacrifices members of the military make especially during the holiday. >> we are able to gather because our troops are willing to hug theirs good-bye and step forward to serve. after a long day, we can come home because they're willing to leave their families and deploy. we can celebrate the holidays because they're willing miss their own. >> and so as our troops continue to -- >> now the president and first lady then asked americans to

help those who have served as they make the transition back to civilian life. if you are lying today, there could be delays this morning. rain and poor visibility yesterday caused more than 3,000 flights to be delayed or cancel add cross the nation. and some of the biggest problems occurred in chicago, dallas and philly. and heavy fog and low ceilings caused delays up to two hours at sfo. and fog should not be a serious problem today but we are monitoring all bay area airports and we will have a better sense of conditions throughout the newscast. and the california highway patrol is marking the holiday with the annual crack down. the maximum holiday enforcement period began at 6:00 last night. and that means chp will be deploying all available officers to look for impaired driver, speeders and dangerous behaviors on the road. the enforcement period runs through midnight on sunday. it's a holiday tradition that never changes.

many shoppers wait until the last minute to buy their gifts. this mall was among spots that was packed with procrastinators and maybe they just had to get out last night. and we spotted an oakland raider among the large number of last minute shoppers. >> exactly what i wanted. now the issue of wrapping it which is going to be a challenge in itself. probably won't be done until christmas day. >> he's busy. >> he's busy. >> and he wanted to wait until the end to make a surprise. and showing his holiday spirit this week. he gave a sick girl's family one week of his pay. >> yeah, that was nice. >> very, very nice. time is 6:38. and christmas is a day of business as usual for some u.s. postal workers. they volunteered to deliver priority mail on this holiday. they'll load up about two hours from now. and then they'll bring joy to people as they deliver cards and packages to the bay area and across the country. governor brown continued a

tradition granting pardons to more than a hundred people but he took one back. they are granted to people who served their time and stayed out of trouble for at least 10 years. and most of the cases involve minor drug offenses. initially he issued 105 pardons but resended one after the los angeles times reported that the man had been disciplined by financial regulators. a uc berkeley graduate imprisoned for more than two months is free this morning. she is a vet from portland. and we have been telling you her story. she was arrested in september when police stopped a hired car in which she was a passenger. and another passenger the car was arrested for carrying meth. she was also arrested but never charged and she is now staying at the home of a former [ indiscernible ]. she has to get a passport before she can get to the u.s. an emotional christmas message from the leader of the roman catholic church. what has the message that

bay area but the system that brought us rain is now beginning to shift east. and from the pacific northwest, washington, down into the rocky, moving through utah, colorado, even into portions of new mexico, we've got snow there that's going to stretch into the dakotas. and along the east coast, rain this morning but by this afternoon, it's out of there moving east. and let's come back home. and there's that system. quick mover. boy, it was. now we're on the backside and you can see the northerly flow. that's really dry and we have cooled off in the overnight hours. and chilly temperature, breezy conditions, the winds will die down some as we get into the afternoon. and they won't go away completely. cool temperatures and locally breezy conditions for the second half of the day. and let's look at the numbers.

38 in fairfield. 38 in concord. by about 9:00 or so, temperatures will turn around but still going to be cool. 46 with mostly sunny skies at about 9:00 a.m. and stepping out, some sunshine in store for the second half of the day as well. and by lunchtime, feeling good. 55 degrees. and upper 50s many the forecast for concord this afternoon. and then slip into sunset about 5:00, cooling it back, already back to about 49, 50 degrees at 6:00 this evening. and that will be the rule for the next day to maybe into the weekend. very cold nights and maybe even the first frost of the season for many of us. and tracking that for you. 57 degrees in napa for the afternoon today. and widespread upper 50s in and around oakland, san francisco. low 60s as well. and get into the south bay, 57 san jose. and 58 degrees this afternoon for santa cruz. the extended forecast, temperatures will warm slightly. we're talking baby steps into the low 60s into saturday.

welcome back. 6:54 is the time. passengers who plan to spend christmas eve in hawaii made an unexpected stop in oakland before reaching the final destination. it took off from sacramento and then diverted to oakland after the captain detected a problem with the cabin pressure system. it took about two hours to fix the problem. and the plane did arrive safely in honolulu. >> at least they got there

a fire station shut down because of the potential mold problems. air tests were conducted at fire station 16 yesterday morning. department officials say firefighters were moved from that location. we told you to neighboring stations, it was as a precaution but fire crews will be positioned behind the station during peak hours to make sure the neighborhood is covered. and crews plan to do some patrolling in the area. >> i am loving the stories on this christmas day. the hair dresser from the north bay uses her skills to help the homeless. on christmas eve, she super tuesday up a shop in a pop-up tent. and she rented generator and other equipment to offer a free hair cut. and people she helped say it's a real confidence boost. >> a little person idealkity. >> you feel good about yourself. and you feel pretty. >> the you have something that i can use to make somebody's life easier or better. >> that's right. using your gifts to help
