at noon, protesters are planning a demonstration in the middle of union square as businesses in oakland clean damage from last night's demonstrations. >> a hacking group is claiming responsibility for a cyber attack on a popular online gaming network. we'll have the latest on the massive outage for gamers. >> the day after christmas is known as a day for discounts around returns. what you can expect if you are heading to the stores today.

good afternoon. today businesses near oakland's jack london square are cleaning up after a christmas night demonstration that got out of hand. as ktvu's alex savage explains vandals took aim at a treasured holiday tradition. >> reporter: the giant christmas tree is surrounded by crime scene tape, ornaments smashed, fence destroyed after a demonstration that turned destructive. it was hardly a silent night in oakland, this video on facebook shows vandals tearing down lights and trashing the tree during a christmas night protest about police brutality. afterward, firefighters and police officers stepped in to help clean up the mess and this morning, neighbors were shaking their heads. >> i am disappointed that, excuse me, but some idiots damaged it. it has nothing to do with any

cause. it's something to be enjoyed by the community. >> reporter: at this nearby bevmo store workers swept broken glass from sidewalks after vandals busted almost every window here. they used chunks of concrete and even some of the merchandise. >> dropped some bottles of wine, started throwing wine through the windows. >> reporter: the manager got the call during christmas dinner. >> it's pretty frustrating to cut into christmas dinner. i got people that are going to come to work and wonder what's going on. we'll open up. we'll still be business as usual. we'll just have this ugly run down look. >> reporter: police say at least 100 people took part in last night's demonstration. organizers dubbed it no time off with aim to keep officers busy. there were no arrests made. the clean up will easily cost tens of thousands of dollars but despite the damage done here, this tree on the plaza in jack london square will remain

on display through the new year. alex savage, ktvu. family and friends of a man shot and killed by police are set to hold a rally outside. just this week, police released video of gonzalez walking out of his garage with a gun in his hand. police responded after gonzalez called to say he was going to kill himself and a police officer. when they arrived, police said he fired a weapon and that's when they shot and killed him. his widow andrea gonzalez says her husband never fired his gun and should not have been killed. she's suing the city for excessive force. services underway for one of the new york city cops killed execution style earlier this month. as david lee miller reports as family and friends gather to mourn, one local organization is asking for financial help

for those murdered officers left behind. >> reporter: nypd officers carrying the casket of rafael ramos, mourners lining up for hours to say good-bye to the slain cop. some 25,000 law enforcement members are expected to attend his funeral tomorrow, jetblue offering free flights for relatives and police to travel to new york for saturday's services. >> it's great to see a corporation these days do something that's so giving. >> the airline is also helping family and officers fly in for officer wenjian liu's funeral yet to be scheduled. more assistance is coming which will pay the mortgages on both officers' homes. >> it's important that we show the liu and ramos family that we are all coming together as a community, as new yorkers, and as americans. >> liu's parents and widow joining organization leaders at a news conference, rudy

giuliani speaking, he says the officers families would have wanted for nothing if they weren't killed in the line of duty. >> we can go to bed safe because this family and the ramos family sacrificed their son, their husband, the bread winner of the family. >> mayor giuliani doing his part for the families of the two slain officers, he contributed $20,000. in queens, new york, david lee miller, fox news. a deadly accident shut down so cal avenue in santa cruz. police say the accident involving a car and bicyclist happened near parkway just before 9:00 this morning. so far they haven't released more information about the victim. they say it will be closed in the area for at least two more hours as they investigate that deadly crash. four people died and two others are hospitalized after a head on accident in a sacramento suburb. one of the cars was engulfed in

flames when chp arrived. the crash happened around 1:30 at san juan avenue in farrow, northeast suburb of sacramento. one of the people who died was thrown from the vehicle. the two survivors suffered major injuries. investigators say speed appears to be a factor in that crash. a mountain lion sighting is prompting a warning from police. a person who lives near brent wood road saw the animal in a tree early this morning. that person called police a few hours later. officers found a dead deer on the property that had apparently been killed by the lion. animal control and fish and wildlife rangers were called but the mountain lion had already moved on. online gaming networks for play station and xbox are down following apparent christmas day hack. a hacking group is taking credit for the black out keeping gamers worldwide from

logging onto play. katie has the details. >> reporter: plugged in, powered on, ready to game with a new play station christmas morning. >> they said sorry servers are down. >> reporter: claudia's calls to sony yielded few answers as the lizard squad claimed responsibility for taking down play station network and xbox live servers halting online gaming for the two systems. >> he thought it was bogus, pretty horrible. >> reporter: mark's 6 year old son couldn't play his game. >> got some good notice. christmas day was a spectacular time to disrupt the network. >> reporter: a war of words ensued on twitter between hackers claiming to disrupt networks and others trying to restore service. the outage lasted into today. some made the best of it and gamed offline. >> at the end of the day they were playing with each other. >> reporter: others looked

second to go to stores for post holiday bargains and to return unwanted gifts. at macy's many people were cashing in freshly minted gift cards. the average consumer returns nearly four holiday gifts last year. that's according to the national retail federation holiday return survey. one shopper told us she can't believe how enjoyable her shopping experience has been. >> i was able go into stores the day before christmas and there were no crowds. when i was growing up, it was bed lumpur shopping. i remember cabbage patch kids and i remember what it was like a couple days before shopping at christmas time at new york city at macy's in harold square. oh my god you risk losing a limb. >> we spend a couple hundreds dollars and we probably saved a couple dollars. >> so it's a wash. >> it's even except when the bill comes.

a monterrey county jail inmate is on the loose after pulling off a tricky escape. guards say just before noon yesterday, 23 year old fredy swanson climbed up a ventilation duct, punched out a small window and escaped. he was arrested on narcotics firearms related violations. he is 5'9", 160 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. two people are under arrest at thanksgiving day homicide in san francisco. car and harrison are in custody. investigators say 23 year old

darren renaldo was shot multiple times in front of his home on thanksgiving afternoon. police say evidence led them to car and harrison who were arrested tuesday. detectives say the two are linked to multiple robberies and auto thefts. san francisco is holding its annual chipping of the trees event to let people know when and how they can recycle christmas trees. the event outside city hall includes a giant wood chipper. to give you an idea of how the trees will be turned into wood chips that will be used to generate electricity. curb side collection runs from january 2 through january 16 and it's on regular curb side pick up day. a christmas day fire left two homes in san francisco red tagged as unfit to live in. today we learn the fire caused more than $1 million in damage. a victorian home on mississippi street near 22nd street is a total loss while the house next

door is heavily damaged. fortunately, there were no injuries so since most of the people living in the homes were gone for the holiday. firefighters and neighbors helped save two cats and a dog in one of the homes. >> it's great neighborhood. the neighbors help the neighbors. a couple people took the cats and a couple people notified the residents who are out of town that their home was on fire. >> in another unit two cats did die and firefighters were able to recover them for the owner. investigators think the fire may have started between the homes and now they're looking into electrical problems as a cause. a deadline is approaching for victims seeking disaster assistance from south napa quake last august. the quake is estimated to have caused at least $300 million in damage. the deadline to register for assistance from the federal emergency management agency is

monday. monday is when fema plans to shut down its assistant set up in napa following the quake. this includes essential home repairs and other disaster related needs not covered by insurance. if you are headed to reno or tahoe be prepared for a lot of company. hundreds of skiers and snow borders from the bay area are expected to head to the slopes. the resorts have a lot of new snow from several storms over the last weeks. some have seen up to four inches in the last 24 hours. many hope to make up for a loss in business the past seasons. >> this is closer to normal. that's more than we have had in the last couple seasons. >> there is no snow in the forecast this weekend. the next storm is expected to roll into sierra next tuesday. our bay area weekend will be dry as well. outside our doors the chilly breezy weather continues giving

you a beautiful sweeping view of rolling hills and they're green. we've got blue skies, crystal clear for most of us and it has to do with the wind out there. the wind helped preclude fog from forming. we didn't see frost because of the winds that continue. reports of 31 miles per hour are still reported, 23 in concord. on one end it's been positive at least through the morning hours. on the other side of it, it's been awfully uncomfortable for many that has to be outdoors where it is breezy. hay ward, 21 miles per hour the gust for you, livermore at 24. they're stronger now than they were earlier. for the afternoon today, winds will continue. i think they're going to begin to subside as we get into the second half of your afternoon and by evening they'll be calming a bit. the system that brought us rain on christmas eve is still pushing east and brought snow to the sierra. we are on the back side and we have a ridge of high pressure

over the pacific. that's created that dry northerly flow right into the bay area. for today we are mostly sunny. we are dry but we are cool and the breeze will stick with us for the next few hours. it is 59 in concord, 58 oakland, 58 napa, 50s along the peninsula. into the second half of the day we are looking at 57 oakland, mid to upper 50s pretty much for everything, 59 morgan hill and san jose, 55 in livermore. once we are rid of the wind we are expecting patchy frost overnight. tomorrow morning without the wind we are likely to be colder at least for most of us and patchy frost will be a consideration. i don't normally give you overnight lows this early in the day but here is a look at what we are expecting. some areas will get into freezing conditions around napa, santa rosa, 33 concord and livermore and around the bay it's going to be cold, 38

in the forecast for oakland, 37 redwood city, some of the coldest numbers we have seen so far. the extended forecast with your bay area weekend always in view, we are dry through the weekend and temperatures don't budge a lot, 50s to low 60s in the forecast. once we get rid of the wind into the overnight hours that's when we are looking at patchy frost possibly. bring in the pets. cover those sensitive plants. >> i had to turn on the heat for the first time and broke out the gloves for the first time last night. my friends are going like this when they hear me say it's so called. celebrity wedding splits and famous people caught behaving badly. as we get ready to wrap up 2014 we look back on entertainment stories of the year and what's ahead for 2015.
