a clear day turns into a cold winter night across the bay area. and now some areas are bracing for below freezing temperatures. good evening i'm ken pritchett. >> and i'm cristina rendon, frank and julie are off. a blast of cold weather is hitting the bay area and tonight we're expecting the coldest temperatures felt in months. this is a live look at the bay bridge and temperatures have already dipped into the 40s. a frost advisory is set to take effect in the bay area. >> mark tamayo is here. how cold is it going to get.

>> this will be the coldest in some of the bay areas. some areas in the upper 30s at this hour. live storm tracker 2, we are in the clear. we have the brisk northernly flow developing. with that that's transporting the cold air across the region. with the cold air we have the mornings in place with a freeze warning with a purple shade to the north and south. saturday morning until 9:00 a.m. also up toward lake county as well. take a look at some of the current numbers out there. upper 30s for santa rosa and napa right now. lower 40s toward walnut creek and livermore. here's our san rafael camera looking out toward the bay. overnight lows will be back down to the 20s and 30s. patchy frost out there. very cold numbers to start off your saturday morning. upper 20s for santa rosa and napa. widespread 30s for napa and livermore and san francisco 42- degree. coming up at 10:20, i'm

tracking another source of cold air. as a matter of fact it could be cooler. i will let you know when that moves back into the bay area. it's the day after christmas but there's still no relief for people working in retail. the rush of customers continues. only now the crowds of people are looking for mark downs or to make returns. happening now, paul chamber social -- chambers is live in berkeley where he found stores have been busy all day. >> reporter: although the christmas shopping season is over, a lot of people packed the stores today although they were returning unwanted items. now that the holiday has come and gone, the pressures of getting special someone the perfect gift is over. but retailers are thinking that some of the items were received will lure you back into their stores. >> we do have a lot of people that are looking to spend their gift cards that they spent for christmas. so that's a big thing.

a lot of people may be buying stuff with the cash they were given. >> reporter: but there's a lot of people that are not buying but returning items. according to the national retail federation. nearly 40% of consumers expected to take back at least one of their holiday gifts. >> just one. i got a gift from my grandma but i rather get a call of duty game. >> reporter: 23% of all returns take place during the holiday season for an estimated $60 billion worth of goods. which means long lines and headaches for store employees. the best buy in emeryville, things are a lot easier to return now than in the past. >> it's easier because our return policy allows us as a store to be more accommodating than we were before. >> reporter: but for some smaller local businesses it's just the opposite. >> i'm not so many returns, mostly just people kind of saying, well i saw this thing and it wasn't under the tree this year for me so i've come back to spoil myself. >> reporter: good things for consumers especially for stores

advertising big prices and small sales. >> a financial wellness comes down to the last four days of december. you know the two days before christmas a few days after christmas. >> reporter: while retailers are banking on a big weekend this weekend because christmas was so close to the weekend. they'll be having people returning things but also buying the deals. the movie that almost wasn't released has made its first million. >> hello north korea. with limited showings online and availability online the interview generated $1 million on christmas day. insiders say the controversial comedy would have earned five times if it saw a normal release. today north korea issued an angry statement calling the movie dishonest and illegal as well as disparaging president obama and accusing the u.s. of shutting down its internet

service. if you found that microsoft x box or sony play station under your christmas tree you probably haven't gotten too much use of it. a hacker group has kept it offline. >> i think the people assigned the thought of swiping a credit card with where their information was going, now they figured out a digital network can also be hacked. it's kind of deceiving work. >> reporter: x box reports most of its services are up and running although some apps are still affected. new developments now in the ambush killings of two new york police officers. as hundreds of officers pay tribute to one of their own. a wake was held today for officer rafael ramos at the church in queens where he was a long time member. ktvu's debora villalon was here with how the city and the nation are showing support for the husband and father of two

sons. can an eight hour wake went well into the evening with lines around the block and big video screens set up for the over flow crowd. governor cuomo and vice president biden will be at the same church for tomorrow's funeral. the body of rafael ramos was brought to the queen's church where he was a long time usher and helped minister to others. now it is full of those who mourn him. ramos' eldest son eulogized his dad as his rock, his hero, his best friend. supporters have visited the precinct where ramos worked to show their support. now a nonprofit has

acknowledged that the families of ramos and liu will not have to worry about keeping their home. >> we want to pay their home in full so they don't have that worry that they have to go for. >> reporter: the uncle of liu wept as he listened. >> you and i can go to bed, our children can go to bed, our parents can go to bed safe because this family and the ramos family sacrificed. >> reporter: officer liu's family are still planning the funeral as they wait for families to arrive. his family members have been offered free air fare by jet blue. as nypd mourns it's also on high alert. >> any statement suggesting

the banner disrespectful. demonstrators were back in san francisco's union square today reading the names of black men who had been killed by police. scrolls were unrolled on the ground with the names of the dead. one man told us the issue cuts across racial lines. the event was peaceful. organizers say their aim was to make it a family friendly and safe event. a christmas day protest in oakland had a very different tone. some protests seemed intent on vandalism. they everyone trashed a holiday tree at jack london square. the christmas spirit still glistens in jack london square. >> beautiful. >> isn't it beautiful. >> reporter: everyone as contractors swarm through broken lights. it's like if the grinch paid a visit. a protest in oakland christmas night turned destructive.

video posted to the ktvu facebook page showing vandals ripping apart the christmas tree in jack london square. >> i mean the christmas tree is symbolic of all that's good. so they had to go and damage it. i'm mad. >> reporter: the vandals hit bez mo too. the manager got a call from the alarm company during his christmas dinner. >> they said we have multiple window breakage alarms going off. they told me how many, i thought maybe it's, system error there can't be that many broken windows all at once. >> reporter: those store windows are now boarded. the clean upstretched into the afternoon. >> they keep us pretty busy. not that i enjoy this kind of work. >> reporter: today many are shaking their head. >> why? it's wanton destruction. why would you do it. >> reporter: we don't know of any arrests from christmas night. the goal is to get the lights on the bottom of the tree

working again and keep the christmas tree up through new year. a quiet but determined group called for truth and justice for a man who was killed by antioch police officers. demonstrators released newly released video of the killing of danny gonzalez. gonzalez widow has filed a civil suit over his death. her attorney provided us with this video of the incident. police say gonzalez had called 911 that day to say he was going to kill himself and a police officer. they initially said gonzalez fired his weapon and that's when officers opened fire killing him. but the family now says the video proves gonzalez never fired his gun and they contend the gun still had its safety on. >> everything that came out. everything was a lie. everything. just to squash it and you know let's move on and it's not fair. >> reporter: the contra costa d.a. cleared the officer. a district attorney says the

video shows that police acted in self-defense. coming up they woke up to the sound of a predator killing a deer. >> i screamed right back at it to scare it. >> where they say a mountain lion is hiding. and where two men became a couple of bay area heros for some grandparents. she's not just a special olympian. she's won a medal in every sport. how this bay area hall of famer is being honored before the rose bowl. a hot chocolate? ho ho ho... we'll all have hot cocoa!

new at 10:00, a special honor for a special olympian from the bay area. a chance to represent northern california on a float in the rose parade. that woman has overcome extraordinary challenges to become an inspiring athlete and now she's getting ready to ring in the new year or a high note. ktvu's jana katsuyama live now at stanford with her story, jana. >> reporter: stephanie ching comes here to practice swimming with her father three times a week. but not next week. she told me tonight that she is so excited that instead, she is going on this trip to pasadena. >> you did excellent. good job. >> reporter: stephanie ching did something extraordinary last summer, she swam and reached beyond everybody's expectations including her own. yet another victory to add to

her many milestones and pedals. >> swimming, first time in basketball. >> reporter: ching has been an athlete for most of her 36 years and this year she learned she was selected to ride in the special olympics float. >> i was surprised when my mom told me about it. i'm really happy. so it was my christmas miracle. >> reporter: her parents might say stephanie is a bit of a miracle. >> i was just so happy. i just think it's amazing. it's just wonderful. >> reporter: a young woman what's starting line was miling behind. she had pneumonia three times before her first birthday and struggled to maintain muscle tone a challenge for many with down syndrome. but in her first tricicle age at age 7 she found something in her special olympic that is awakened her spirit as an athlete. a taste of success, determination, discipline and heart. >> i love to be around with

other athletes. and encouraging others. >> reporter: now she has won medals in 10 sports and was named athlete of the year. she has always been a special olympics embassador. meeting politicians in washington, d.c. and in her parents and brother she had the most supportive coaches and friends. >> she learns to talk to people and also be a contributing member of the community. >> she has the special olympics spirit of going out to learn things, and enjoying it. >> reporter: and stephanie ching has already set her goals for the new year. swim faster and farther and keep encouraging others to do their best. a struggle persists there's word tonight that water is

still leaking into the eastern span. an effort to talk about 900 bolts was partially success. the water moving into chambers a spokesman for the bay area port authority says dehumidifier are keeping air. reports of the bacteria disease were twice that of normal with 20% of patients known to be homeless. the bacteria can spread quickly among the homeless due to the lack of access to soap and water. the disease causes diarrhea and dehydration but most people recover. a child was bitten at 5:30 as he walked with his father. the father managed to drove off the animal. a coyote bit the leg of a 42-

year-old man. by 7:00 police had located the animal and killed it near knight o' court. they say the animal looked injured like it was sick. it happened around el cerrito animal in an area where mountain lion sightings are known to happen. this time the big cat got a little too close for comfort. >> reporter: startles you and scares you for a new minutes and the window was open. so we could hear everything. >> reporter: it's a sound robert doll had not heard before. a rude awakening around 12:30. first tree branches dropping on to her roof. then. >> just extremely high pitched. just a very high shrieky

scream. >> our dog wouldn't even leave the bed at all. she was just like scared to death. >> reporter: it wasn't until 11:00 in the morning that doll came across this. >> there's been a will lot of fawns and deer around. it's probably just waiting, waiting for -- that's part of the wild right there. >> reporter: he knows deer frequent his front yard in the middle of the night. >> that's droppings. >> reporter: the animal probably comes from behind the creek. >> he probably just followed the creek looking for food. >> we have lots of kids across the street here, right next door here. there's some toddlers around so that's concerning. >> reporter: the deer had injuries consistent with an animal attack but could not find the animal. >> it's very unfortunate that it happened in somebody's front

yard but it does happen. wherever there are mountain lions this is going to happen. >> reporter: doll hopes this mountain lion on the prowl doesn't return looking for the next meal. >> i knew it was quite serious. and i didn't realize that it actually killed somebody. >> reporter: there are no plans to try to trap this animal. the fish and wildlife does not do that unless animals are aggressive toward humans. azenith smith, ktvu news. in the weather temperatures continue to drop off rapidly this evening. the first surge of cold air pushing into the evening for tonight. the next one that will be for tuesday and into wednesday as we do wrap up the year. a look at right now the satellite. we do have mostly clear skies out there. just a few high clouds approaching kate mendecino. look at the truckee right now 14 degrees. they're projected to it have a

low of 3 degrees. 3degrees first thing tomorrow morning. back here in the bay area we talked about the chill overnight and patchy fog developing. especially in the north bay, 31 degrees will start off saturday morning. here we are 6:00. 30s and 40s. widespread 30s across the region. then as we do put this into motion into the afternoon hours. you will notice temperatures warming up a bit but mainly in the 50s for afternoon highs. so with the cooler start for tomorrow, we're expecting tomorrow afternoon to be cooler than today. but the key headline heads up clear and cold. patchy frog. 28 to 42 degrees. a little bit of some relief but still pretty chilly at 10:00 saturday morning. and then into the afternoon hours. still mostly sunny and cool. 53 to 58 degrees. coming up at 10:45, we'll take a look at our four day forecast to see if we have more rainfall to talk about before the year comes to an end.

sierra ski resorts are hoping for a busy weekend. the slopes are covered with a blanket of snow from recent snow. that means many businesses are going to suffer from losses. and a bit of snow on hawaii's big island. these pictures are from the dormant volcano monakaya. it stands 1,400 feet tall. while the snow was melting quickly. last check of the web cam showed a dusting remaining on the peak. a teenage boy struck and injured by a hit-and-run driver. >> he just touched me leg and didn't say nothing to me. she just went off. >> at 10:30, the teen tells us what happened and the clue that could lead authorities to the driver. but first 10 years later, how survivors marked one decade after a devastating tsunami in south asian. female announcer: it's time to make room for the new mattress models!

10 years ago today, a tsunami surged from the ocean. the tsunami reached coastal communities but because there was no warning system in place at the time almost all the victims were taken by surprise. >> reporter: a decade ago walls of water came in more than 30 feet tall and as strong as jetliners slammed into the coast. more than 303,000 were dead. in indonesia more than 170,000

people died. in thailand merely 54,500 people died including 2,000 tourists. 3,000 still remain missing that day. among those visiting thailand that day, milcova. her fiance did not survive. >> i know what you're feeling as i was here 10 years ago and lost my partner simon. >> reporter: when the waves hit, jillian was in a pool putting sunscreen on her boys 5- year-old loki and 1-year-old make. she said she heard a noise like a jet plane roaring. >> then the next thing we saw a wall of water. >> she tried to hold both of her boys. >> just started running. >> reporter: surel describes what happened next. >> i just happened to let go of the boy, i lost grab hold of him but she had to let him go

because she was going under. and i was screaming trying to find him and, we thought he was dead. >> reporter: miraculously the 5- year-old survived clinging to a door frame for two hours. >> every christmas and every birthday i just think, you are so lucky because things could be so different. so, it's just putting your life into perspective. and just realizing how lucky you are. >> reporter: over the past decade 28 nations spent more than $400 million on early warning systems that could save lives if such a massive tsunami strikes again. today is the first day of the uniquely american holiday of kwanzaa. the seven day holiday runs through january 1st. a professor at california state university long beach created it in 1966 as a nonreligious celebration of family and social values. it's meant to help african americans reconnect with their

roots. each night of kwanzaa a new candle is lit with a tree of seven candle branches. and a teenager tells us how this hit-and-run changed his life. a new proposal that would help prevent dui offendsers from becoming repeat offenders.

he was in a crosswalk when he was hit by a car and as he lay on the pavement the driver got out to do something before taking off. that high school senior is laid up tonight while the hit-and- run driver is still on the lose. new at 10:00, amber lee is live in rodeo with the young man's story. the dream he may never realize and his family's hope to find

the person responsibility. amber. >> ken, the 17-year-old tells me he was crossing the street here along parker avenue at sixth street when a driver hit him. pulled over. got out of the car. looked at him briefly then she took off. >> all my pain is in my knees. >> reporter: chris mcdevin tells me he is suffering from broken bones and ligaments as he was walking home from school. >> yes it is upsetting, it's frustrating. >> reporter: the doctor told him it would take him at least a year for him to walk without help and that he may never be able to play football again. chris' mother says her first reaction was anger. >> my heart was here and it dropped to my stomach. and then i started shaking. i had no words. >> reporter: the hit-and-run happened nine days ago on a cold drizzly night around 5:00. chris says a woman driving in a silver chevy cobalt struck him as he was walking in the crosswalk. he says the impact caused him to bounce off the roof of the

car and caused him to land on the other side of the street. she told me that a woman in her 50s or 60s with glasses walked up to him. >> she just walked up to me and touched my leg and didn't say anything to me then went off. >> reporter: chris is facing surgery a week from today. the football player is expected to graduate in june. >> i will still do the best with my life everyone if i don't get to play sports. it's a big blow but i'll get over it, somehow, some way. >> reporter: two friends who were with chris at the time of the accident took this photo of the car's license plate number. and the frame which reads navy mom. and gave it to the highway patrol officer who's investigating the case. chris' mother says she's still waiting to find out what the chp has learned. >> i'm still hurt. and this pain is not going to leave me until i know they

arrest her or they at least say they got her. >> reporter: when i spoke with the highway patrol tonight, all they could tell me was that this case is under investigation. >> amber lee in rodeo. thank you. a new california bill would require ignition breathizers for driving following a conviction. anti drunk driving advocates prefer the ignition interlock device over an out right ban on driving. they plan to introduce the bill on monday. meantime, dmv is getting ready for illegal immigrants to apply for a california driver's license. a new law takes effect next week that allows illegal immigrants to get driver's license if they can prove they're living in california. they advise anyone who previously obtained a driver's license under a false name or

someone elses social security number to speak with a lawyer before applying. a man and woman are under arrest in connection with a thanksgiving day homicide in san francisco. san francisco police arrested 20-year-old maisha karr and marquez harrison on tuesday. the pair is also linked to multiple robberies and autothefts. they say evidence links them to the death of devin reynaldo. san francisco firefighters officials say a fire on christmas day did more than a million dollars in damage to two potrero hill homes. the three alarm fire started on mississippi street between mariposa and 18th. a large victorian got the worse of it. its roof collapsed. an adjacent building was also damaged. firefighters estimate damage at $3.3 million. there was no injuries since

most of the people living in the home were gone for the day. and it's never a good sign when firefighters rush to your home especially on christmas day. the firefighters return a second time and saved the day. ann rubin shows us how. >> look at our christmas day. >> reporter: this is what jamie gains and his fiance woke up to on wednesday morning. >> i went to open my door and smoke came right at me. >> reporter: a fire tore through their apartment. she managed to grab her robe everything else burned. >> i still get sad when i talk about it because we lost everything. >> reporter: that included their christmas tree and all the presents beneath it. the fire department noticed this and decided to take action. >> i said let's get some toys and take care of this family. >> reporter: so the fire department returned their fire truck full of toys. >> when the firefighters came

and opened up the truck, the pictures show him hugging the firefighter and he just broke down and cry. he couldn't believe it. i couldn't believe it. >> reporter: firefighters say they hold their annual toy drive in part to be prepared for situations like this. >> to see the joy in their faces and the kids and the family to do that little extra for them is just, it seems small but it's so huge. >> reporter: gains says not only did the firefighters save lived that day, they saved christmas. >> everybody was in awe in all the gifts they had brought us. and it was just, so amazing we thanked them so much. it wouldn't have been christmas for our grand kids without that. >> reporter: the couple isn't sure where they'll go next or how they'll even begin to replace the belongings they lost in the fire. family have set up a go fund me page on their behalf. i told you about the cool dry weather pattern and the frost we can expect. coming up i'll detail the time

he's looking forward to 2015, former president george h.w. bush is likely to be back home from the hospital on new year's day. the elder bush was taken to the hospital because of shortness of breath. bush celebrated his 90th birthday this year. the dow gained 23 points and is holding above 18,000. nasdaq climbed 33 points today. while retail numbers are not complete, holiday sales look strong. tesla motor company announced a series of improvements that will allow its roadster to drive nonstop from san francisco to los angeles. the company says a combination of new battery, aerodynamics

and tires will improve its range. there's no word yet on the cost of the upgrades or when they will be available. two philadelphia transit officers are being called heros after assisting on a special christmas delivery. this delivery was precious indeed. this is going to be surveillance video from the subway line. it shows officers as they helped deliver a christmas baby. the new mom was on board the train when she started to scream that her water broke. the officers heard the call on the radio and rushed to help. >> we were just there to do what we do. >> we delivered a baby for her. so it's like her christmas present. but it's also a blessing and present for myself. this is the first time i experienced something like this. >> parents and baby were rushed to the hospital. the baby is a healthy boy. mother and son are doing fine today. a young man fighting adversity to play football at stanford.

monotonous thing i've ever had to do my life. but on august 30th, the stars aligned. in the blink of an eye, austin got his chance. >> i ran out and got the ball. i was like huh. >> it's something he's worked so hard for and something we finally got to see. >> my favorite part absolutely was running off the field. because a lot of the coaches and every single one of the players and the equipment guys were just losing it and cheering for me. people were running up to me and hugging me. i thought, i haven't been able to get in as much as i want but i have 100 plus guys here that absolutely love me and are family to me. it was the coolest family in the world knowing that many people were happy for me. >> reporter: at stanford, scott
