temperatures in the bay area forecast. . doffing, i'm john -- good evening, i'm john sasaki. >> i'm heather holmes. it's a somber day across the nation as one of the new york police officers shot and killed in that ambush a week ago is honored. >> he was a father, a son, a brother, and a husband. he was a new yorker. he was a new york city police officer. and he was, he is a hero. >> family, friends, and fellow officers gathered in queens, new york, today, to say goodbye to officer ramos. he was remembered today as a kind and descent man. he grew up in east new york where his childhood friends used a puerto rican expression meaning can of goodness to describe him, something they say still suited him today. the 40-year-old leaves behind a wife and two teenage sons who

were presented with memorial flag following today's service. that is a symbol of gratitude for the sacrifice their family made. since the death of their father, the new york community has come together to really support the two sons. their education will be paid for and the family's mortgage will be paid off. >> the funeral also came with controversy. members of the nypd standing outside of the church turned their backs on new york's mayor bill diblasio when he spoke. the rift between the mayor and police started before the deaths of ramos and his partnership. the police union accused the mayor of not supporting officers during demonstrations about police relations with minorities. officer ramos and his partner were shot and killed seven days ago, ambushed as they sat in their squad car. >> vice president joe biden and other city leaders tanned the service and thousands of police officers from around the country. thousands of officers flood the streets outside of the queens church where services were held

for one of two new york city police officers killed last week. thousands paying their respects for officer ramos. >> i am sure i speak for the whole nation when i say to you that our hearts ache for you. >> reporter: among those in attendance, vice president joe biden offering words of comfort to the ramos family. >> justin and jayden, know that although your father's gone, you have inherited an entire family. the men and women of the new york police department will always be there as long as you are ally. they never, they never, never forget. >> reporter: city leaders spoke of the threats officers face every day. >> those who are called to protect others are special breed. >> here we are to remember. remember what it means to take the job. those of us who are privileged

to call ourselves cops. no other profession will give you as much or symes -- sometimes take as much. >> reporter: ramos was known as a man of faith. he was hours away from graduating from a community crisis chaplain program before he and fellow officer lou were gunned down while sitting in their patrol car. singing outside of last night's wake for the slain officer, hundreds watched on a big screen as ramoss older son spoke of his love for his father. >> he was my rock, a beacon of wisdom and my absolute best friend. dad, i will miss you. i will miss you with every fiber of my being. >> reporter: such a touching moment you saw there. at the funeral today, the nypd commissioner announced both officer ramos and officer lou were posthumously promoted to detective first grade. as we mentioned, dozens of

officers from across the country, including here in the bay area, flew to new york to honor the fallen officers. many, as you see here, posted photos to social media. the officers in san francisco right here, they tweeted out this picture. you can see a large group of officers from sfpd in new york today. i want to take you to another post, freemont. from the freemont police department. two freemont police department officers went to new york to pay tribute to officers ramos and lou. again, this is from the freemont police department posted on twitter. we want to take you now to the fairfield police department. officer beckwith with that department was there and he ran into officers from vallejo, concord and oakland. they're pictured here. a large group of those representative at today's funeral services. san rafael police officers documented the funeral throughout the day on twitter and we spoke with corporal justin graham following the funeral. he told us the moment from today's ceremony that will stay with him. >> i think one of the most

important things you can take away from this is something said by officer ramoss son was brought up during the ceremony when he said when you call a police officer, no matter what is going on, they will always show up. we showed up today for our fallen officers, but we're also always there for our community. when our community needs our help, we'll always be there. judge corporal graham, you see here, he was there with another officer, officer garrison with nypd. he described today's funeral as a surreal experience. he was one of the many police officers flown to that funeral for free today by jet blue. back here into the bay area, people gathered rallying in support of police officers across the nation. fifty people stood outside with balloons and signs thanking officers for their service. organizers said thasm gathering fame -- the afternoon gathering came at a time when police are being unfairly scapegoated and portrayed by the media in a

negative light. >> without the police in this society, there would be no law and order. and there would be a total breakdown of any kind of normal society. >> others said events like today show police officers the community cares. people on the other side of the issue are set to stage a die-in tonight outside of oakland city hall. this is dies after protestors damaged the christmas tree and businesses in jack lemmon square. protestors say tonight's rally will be peaceful that the whole family can attend. they plan to march afterwards. the black lives matter die-in starts at 7:00 p.m. at franco gallo plaza. to our weather. another chilly day across much of the bay area. you see people bundling up as they walked and strolled along the water. it's across the bay area and feels like it. that is true overnight. this morning, the north bay saw temperatures into the upper 20s. that is chilly. >> and looks like it's staying

this way for awhile now. >> and a few neighbors again starting out sunday morning in the lower 30s. that felt the brisk, chilly conditions in the air for today and it's returning first thing sunday morning. the overnight lows, the big story this morning. tomorrow morning not as cold and some spots around 32, 33 degrees and looking at the temperatures from this morning. they ranged from the, coming up for you in the upper 20s in napa and lots of low niters in santa rosa. here we go. some of the cold numbers out there. santa rosa, 30 degrees and concord, 34. livermore, 33; and look at the cold numbers from this morning. as far as current numbers right now, already cooling off and showing you some 40s in santa rosa, walnut creek and livermore. you can see a few high clouds approaching the bay area. they will continue to be a factor tonight and into tomorrow morning. not as cold and still patchy frost out there, especially into santa rosa and napa.

low 30s for concord and livermore and antioch. san francisco in the lower 40s. i'm tracking another surge of cold air that could impact your new year's eve plans. that is coming up in 10 minutes. and the chp is investigating a collision on the southern edge of contra costa county that killed a bicyclist. the victim was travelling -- travelling with a group of cyclists when the freak accident occurred. christina is in our newsroom with more on how this crash happened. christina. >> reporter: we're learning the victim was trying to avoid an accident himself. a chp spokesman said the cyclist rode into oncoming traffic into the direct path of a water truck. an early morning ride in the morgan territory hills took a tragic turn for a group of cyclists. other riders and drivers were turned away from the site of the deadly accident around 9:45 a.m. >> i had to see. this is one of my fellows. >> reporter: the california highway patrol said about 50 to 60 cyclists were travelling eastbound on highland road near

manning when two cyclists in the group crashed with each other. >> all the other riders tried to avoid that collision. one of the riders near the back of the pack for unknown reasons crossed over the yellows. and collided with the water truck. >> reporter: that rider died shortly after crashing. a tragic experience for the man's fellow riders but the water truck driver, too. >> and he was probably more concerned about hitting a cyclist and didn't -- he was in the other lane. [ indiscernible ] >> they decided to cut his trip short. >> i usually arrive with a group of people, you know, but they take the days off for the holidays, i guess. i wanted to ride. >> , huh. >> shouldn't cross over the yellow line, obviously. and on that descent, there are blind aspects there. you can't see if there is a car coming up. by then, it's going to be too late. >> reporter: they say the accident is a reminder to cycle alert. >> we got to let the families

know where we're heading, our friends. you have to keep your cell phone and i.d. with you. you never know what is going on happen on the road. >> reporter: the consider, hp said they still investigating the crash. the coroner's office has not released the man's identity. >> any word on the injuries cyclist involved in the initial crash? >> we're told that paramedics treated a handful of peopleup seen and one was taken to the hospital for severe injuries, but he's expected to be okay. >> thank you, christina for following the latest developments there. >> reporter: we have new details in the search for a driver police say hit an officer and took off. south san francisco police say they found the car involved. the collision happened on saturday near parkway and south san francisco. investigators today said that they were able to locate the car with help from the san francisco police department. there is no word of any arrests in that case. and vallejo police are

asking for the public's help for finding a kidnapped woman. witnesses told police it happened around 10:45 yesterday morning at the home of 29-year- old kristen dennis on marquette avenue. a man went inside and pulled her out fearing her into a waiting car driven by another man. dennis was last seen wearing a blue-and-red short-sleeved shirt and blue jean shorts. they believe she knew her abduct oh, described as an african-american american, 30 to 40 years old, weighing 250 pounds and the car was a black mered a seize benz with four doors -- black mercedes-benz with four doors. call police if you know anything about her whereabouts. >> the 49ers and coach jim harbah prepare for the final coach of the'sson as a new report has him trending and some 49er fans depressed. >> plus, the rush to return. >> a gift from grandma and

. arden fair mall in sacramento reopened with normal hours after fights shut it down early last night. they responded to a call of shots fired but no shooting. two fights broke out at the food court. one involved about 20 people. >> i was just eating and all of a sudden, a whole bunch of people got up and started running. everyone was fighting and the security officers were tackling people. then we walked by and a whole bunk of people were lined up. it was crazy. >> an 18-year-old man was arrested and a juvenile was taken into custody. we say -- police say no one was seriously injured in the fights. two years ago, the arden

fair mall was evacuated when shots were fired during a fight in the same food court. a tidal wave of return gifts is expected to hit stores the next few days. the national retail federation predicts 40% of consumers will take back at least one of their holiday gifts. 23% of all returns were taking place between now and the new year. an estimated $60 billion worth of goods will go back to stores. people we spoke with in walnut creek had their own reasons for hitting the stores today. >> gifts from grandma and family didn't fit quite right, so. >> we got money for christmas, so we want to spend it all. >> i shopped for everybody before christmas and i shop for myself after christmas. >> that man has it right. many stores help boost their bottom line with the sales. while store clerks had their hands full with returns, delivery drivers are getting a post holiday workout. u.p.s. expects to handle 4 million returning packages by the end

of the first full week of january. the company is calling monday, january 6th, national returns day. u.p.s. expects people to send more than 800,000 unwanted gifts back that day alone. and disney merchandise has been hot this season for a chilly reason. amazon.com reports frozen was the popular gift this season. it was a frozen princess elsa doll. the watches were anna and elsa and some people bought breezen duct tape. >> and boy scouts in the east bay hope to raise holiday cash by recycling christmas trees. the scouts in antioch created an impromptu recycling center at the marina. but we christened the area looking for trees and they were left curbside by owners as part of the annual fund raiser. >> and they'll be doing a lot of high adventure work and

merit badge work this summer. this helps pay the expenses to get them, especially the families with a challenge economically. >> suggested donations between 10 to $20 and checks made payable to the boy scouts of america. meantime, in san francisco, the city is urging residents to put discarded trees next to the recycling bips starting january 2nd. the city's recycling company will chip the trees and take them to trace where he they will be burned and generate electricity. san francisco is hoping to have zero waist by the year 2020. the boy scouts can have great weather. >> uh-huh. >> and nothing wet or anything outside. >> no raindrops to talk about. you want to bundle up. >> yes. >> and there is a brief feeling out there even for a few minutes. the temperatures, you feel the coolness, the cool of the chill in the air and that is the first surge of cool air into the bay area. that was over the weekend last night into the morning.

impaired drivers and people driving without a valid license. the police say research shows well-publicized checkpoints and dui patrols can reduce the number of crashes up to 20%. according to the highway patrol, the officers have arrested 94 drivers suspected of being under the influence here on bay area roads between 6:00 christmas eve and 6:00 this morning. there have been no dui-related traffic fatalities, the good news during the period in the bay area counties. coming up, college basketball in full swing. >> the west coast conference starts league play. we have saint mary's, santa clara all in action. sports is next.
