afternoon. we will see the cold air move in here and you will feel it turning much colder and very windy as we head toward tuesday into wednesday. partly cloudy here. low clouds. some sun. cool to mild. but lots of mid 50s for temps and a few areas will be struggling to get out of the upper 40s by tomorrow afternoon. now here is brian with an update of a quiet morning. >> we sure hope so. we are keeping an eye on bay area -- things are looking pretty good out there on bay area freeways. there is a traffic issue in san francisco this morning. a sink hole opened up on friday between market and mission. a private contractor is working on a fix right now.

as we take a look at the maps this morning as well 580 not looking too bad. there was an earlier accident blocking all lanes. starting to pick up typical traffic here in the livermore valley. and as we take a look at contra costa things are look great. let's go back to the desk. still no word this morning on what happened to an air asia flight that disappeared on' flight from indonesia to singapore. the families of the passengers are gathered at a crisis center waiting for word on a missing flight. they requested a climb of severe altitude. but that request was denied because there was already another plane flying. the pilot never issued a distressed car. >> the weather conditions were not good.

but other than that we don't want to speculate anything more. >> search crews have reported seeing oil spots and objects in the java sea. it is likely that plane is now on the bottom of the sea. and it has been a very difficult year for southeast asian airlines. the search for flight mh370 ended without finding that jet. 239 people were on that flight when it vanished in march over the indian ocean. and then in july soldiers in ukraine shot down malaysian airlines flight 817. time 16:04. both bay area nfl teams are searching for new head coaches. alex savidge is live this morning in santa clara and the 49ers management alex they will hold a news conference this afternoon. >> yes, good morning to you. this is the end of the jim harbaugh era. despite leading the team to

three nfc title games and super bowl harbaugh is out the door. the 49ers and harbaugh mutually i.eed to part ways after a mediocre 8-8 season. harbaugh though he went out a winner yesterday. and after that victory, players on the field gave harbaugh a gatorade bath. he compiled an over all record of 49, 22, and 1 and he still had one year left on his five- year deal but for harbaugh and the 49ers, the time just seemed right for them both to go their separate ways. >> greatest time of my life. and a lot of great memories. great moments. it has been a tremendous four years. >> a lot of us have been with coach harbaugh since he has been here. the players here before him saw how he turned things around and

turned this organization back into a winning one. it's tough to let that go but at the same time we have to keep moving forward as players. our careers keep going on. and there are multiple reports that harbaugh will become the head coach at his alma matter the university of michigan. he is expected to be introduced there tomorrow. and in the meantime there is the question of who will replace harbaugh. a couple in-house candidates for defensive line coach. the question is whether it will be someone from within the organization or someone outside the team. >> yeah it is fascinating. in a couple minutes ago the new york jets fired rex ryan. there is a lot to talk about this morning. alex savidge live in santa clara. talk to you later.

jim harbaugh story is trending on social media. we have more than 700 viewers weighing in on the facebook page. i wanted to share a few of their thoughts with you. this one from jenn who said this would be a good time to have a dislike button. this is a terrible decision. not happy with this at all. and then frank parson weighs in. there he says wish you the best of luck, jim, you are a class act. you will do great wherever you go. i want to show you this one. this one was set in by a friend of mine. young 49er fan. they held up this sign nobody has had it better than us. thanks coach harbaugh. it appears a lot of folks just want to say thanks to coach harbaugh. he is on to michigan.

the oakland raiders will also start the process of finding a new head coach. they finished where a 47-14 loss road with the denver broncos. after starting out the season with ten straight losses the raiders ended up winning three games. they finish with a 3-13 record. now the interim head coach tony spore ran know he's been told he will be interviewed for the permanent head coaching job. jack delrio. and mike holmgren they could be possible candidates be the new head coach of the oakland raiders. time is 6:08. a bay area lawmaker will unvail a new bill. it's aimed at keeping drunk drivers off the road. it uses technology that can keep them from starting a car. janine de la vega is live in mountain view now to explain why a state senator is really pushing for this legislation

janine. >> reporter: law enforcement agencies here on the peninsula and until the south bay as well as mothers against drunk driving they all support this bill. they say it could help prevent deaths. state senator jerry hill plans on unvailing the bill at 10:00 a.m.. n redwood city. it would require all drivers to install an ignition interlock device. right now it's just optional and only 20% of drivers do pit. the driver breathes into the device and if it detects alcohol, the vehicle won't start. the bill will force even first time offenders to install an ied. >> if you do it once, you are going to do it twice. you are going to do it three times. so i think this is going to prevent a lot of people from driving under the influence.

>> law enforcement agencies have been saturating bay area roads looking for for drunk drivers. 24 other states have similar laws requiring the devices and there are four counties in california that are already participating in a pilot program. back to you. >> thank you. the bay areas recent rains are are not the heavy rains washed out the rail bed where the tracks are supposed to be. so now officials are work on trying to prevent that problem. time is 6:10. time is running out for people in napa county effected by this

the countdown son to 2015. just a few days from now. the crowds will be ringing in the new year and a popular spot to do that is that place. that is the embarcadero in san francisco. hundreds of thousands are expected to gather there to watch that annual fire works display. the san francisco police department says it will have every available officer on hand to help control those crowds. >> we do encourage people not to bring alcohol because we will ask you to leave. >> muni is adding extra planes and buses. bart is extending service until 3:00 in the morning. but it's important to remember the trains will not stop at every station. if you are heading to lake

tahoe for new years eve, expect a lot of company for you. thousands are expected at the snow globe music festival in south lake. s festival starts today and end new years day at 1:00 in the morning. organizers expect 14,000 people at this three-day event. that is up 4,000 from last year. if you are going, prepare yourself for pretty cold weather. the high today in south lake tahoe will be 39 degrees on tuesday and wednesday temperatures are expected to be in the low 20s. it has been two years since a petaluma woman had died. was found behind a snow bank a couple days a after she was reported missing. autopsy results show she died of hyperthermia and she also had drugs in her system. now with the new year a few days away we did want to take a quick look back at some of the good, the bad, and the most

controversial moments in bay area sports. >> there was a lot to talk about. one of the most talked about moments 49ers defensive tackle ray mcdonald here was arrested in september on domestic violence charges. the alleged violence occurred after a party at his home in august. and earlier this month we find out details about a new sexual assault accusation against mcdonald. a woman claims she was sexually assaulted after a night of drinking with the football star. ray mcdonald was released on december 17th. >> this is the best moment of our lives. you couldn't ask for anything better than this. >> hard to beat being the champs. the giants became world champs again. they beat the royals in seven games. pitcher madison baumgartner was voted most valuable player. >> they all said yes but it didn't happen any way.

to keep pablo sandoval in san francisco he signed a deal with the boston red sox for next season. . >> the golden state warriors reach new heights. hit that shot clay thompson. even though they fired head coach. right now the warriors record is 24 wins, five losses. they set a new record with a 16- game win streak. allen had an 8-28 record when he was with the raiders. and then of course your most talked about recent story is that of jim harbaugh leading -- leeing the san francisco 49ers. we'll have more on that story as welcoming up on the morning news. >> that is because the 49ers are holding a news conference. they will tell us more about what is happening. time is 6:17. brian flores in for sal. telling us about the traffic.

do we have any traffic? >> yeah, we do. a lot more people going back to work. this is a wetter update than what we saw an hour ago. typical traffic from hayward. altses the powell cable car line is down as well. mta reporting they will be substituted with shuttle buses. things are looking pretty good. obviously more cars on the road. about 20 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the mccarthur maze. not too bad. take a look at 880 as well. things are looking really nice

mendocino high school girls basketball team was disinvited from a tournament because of a t-shirt and they will be holding a rally today. there is the t-shirt. it reads i can't breathe which were the last words of a new york man after police put him in a choke hold and died. school officials at fort bragg say they were concerned the shirts could lead to violence so that team was disinvited. the rally will be held outside of fort bragg at 10:15 this morning. the interview was an online hit in the first few days it was available. seth rogen and the james franco movie earned $15 million which is a record from on demand movies. and most of the film sales came

through youtube and google play. the big attraction of this years international consumer electronic show will be cars. in the past the video famous and the phones have drawn all the attention but an a record ten auto makers will be talking act everything from self-drying cars to electric vehicles. bmw has the largest exhibit with more than 100 vehicles and that show opens in las vegas on january #th. you may have noticed gas prices are continuing to slip and here in the bay area they are down $0.07 from this time last week. time is 6:26. oil spots and debris in the sea.

and alex, harbaugh just said officially goodbye yesterday. >> reporter: this is really an end of an era here. harbaugh took the team to three nfc championship games and the super bowl. but still this morning he is gone. according to a statement put out by the team, this was a mutual decision for them to part ways. it was filled with a number of off the fieldish use, a number of players facing legal troubles. harbaugh went out a -- they gave harbaugh a gator raid bath. he compiled an over all record 49-22-1. so he leaves a winner. even though he had a year left on his contract, the team and harbaugh felt like the time was

right. >> i feel great about what we accomplished. i feel great about the friendships that were made. >> he's done numerous things to me. not only as a quarterback but also as a person. he is is not only a great coach but a great person. that is what he preaches to the team. >> reporter: and later on today 4ers ceo and gm as well will talk about the search for a new head coach. the next question is what is next for harbaugh? nothing is set in stone and the wild card in all of this is the oakland raiders. they have been pursuing

harbaugh for quite some time. harbaugh is expected to meet with the owner of the raiders later on today. things could get interesting here. we don't know maybe he will stay coaching nfl football in the bay area. >> that was for everyone. you never know; right? >> you never know what can happen here. everyone staying quiet including harbaugh. we'll have to see how things play out today. >> keeping us on our toes. that will be on interesting development. all right, thanks. appreciate it. the players aren't the only ones bidding coach harbaugh a farewell. >> we went through years of turmoil and jim harbaugh brought us back to prominence. >> it was the farewell game for harbaugh but also the last game of the season for the 49ers.

fans say they are excited to come back next year and watch the team play. >> every time i bring new friends to this particular stadium, we want to walk around and see it because it is such a dramatic difference from candle stick. >> fans say they have already set their sights on next year especially since levi stadium will host super bowl 50. that is in february of 2016. they only say the thing that would make it better is the 49er are in that super bowl. officials say it's probably at the bottom of the java sea. contact was lost with that plane yesterday with 162 people on board. katie utehs is in our newsroom now with an update on early reports of debris and fuel slicks that have been found. katie. >> reporter: the search area is

vast. understood noetian officials have discounted the fuel from being from the missing plane and there are conflicting reports about the debris. indonesian vice presidents met with family members. >> we pray for that. but we realize to the worst thing. >> reporter: the planes pilot asked for an altitude change. he was denied because another plane was already flying at that altitude.

>> the wings are not going to fall off because it's going through a thunderstorm. what happens is a tsunami was create chad makes it much more challenging for the pilot to fly. >> aviation officials weighing in on what could be a plane crash. indonesian officials are leading the search effort and say there is no time frame for it. they almost continue top search as long as they can. we will update you with the latest. >> very interesting,. thank you very much. >> some people that were scheduled are feeling very lucky and thankful they missed the flight. 26 people who did buy tickets did not board the plane. a family of ten people all traveling together say they weren't aware of the flights departure time moved up about two hours. by the time they got to the airport, the plane had already left. they were negotiating with the plane for refunds when the word came in that the plane was

missing. a massive man hunt is under way after police search for a second gunman. this all happened just before 9:30 last night as officers were driving in a south los angeles neighborhood. the officers did fire back but no one was hurt. police were able to arrest one of the suspects at the scene and they also recovered a rifle. the lapd declared a tactical alert which sent every available officer to the area of that shooting. but they are still searching for that second gunman. funeral arrangements have been set for the second new york police officer shot and killed in his patrol car. officer lou will be laid to rest on sunday. the funeral for his partner was held this past saturday. they both shot and killed on december 20th. a handful of police officers and sheriffs deputies from the bay area attended ramos' funeral among them was

san francisco police captain gracey. the service was the first step in a long journey for the police department and the new york city police department to heal and come together. serving their communities and the dangers they face every day are the tides that bind them together no matter the department. our time 16:40. today it's a deadline for anyone in napa or solano county that suffered quake damage to register with fema. the government is offering grants and loans. that includes everything from houses that fell off their foundations to household items that don't work right because of earthquake damage. >> i thought it was for major damages. not for small appliances. i got a little letter in the mail during the weekend. i saw it was for things like that. >> fema says they will consider

all claims. fema operations related to the earthquake will shut down at the end of today. brand new this morning. police in san francisco are out there searching for two suspects involved in an early morning home invasion robbery near san francisco state university ever university. it happened at 3:00 this morning. two men broke into the home. they held two people inside at gunpoint. the suspects stole items from the home and ran away. police only have a vague description right now of the suspects involved. no one was hurt during that robbery. we're getting a break from the rain but the recent storms did reveal an unexpected problem for a transit project in the north bay. coming up at 7:00 i will tell you about the damage that was done to the smart trains and the solution girls are search

welcome back. our time is 6:45. california may get a lot tougher on people convicted o ever drunk driving. to have a special device installed in their cars. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're in mountain view to explain how this new technology can crack down on dui offenders janine. >> reporter: mountain view is part of jerry hill's district and he lost his best friend to a drunk driver about 30 years ago. he is pushing for this legislation because he thinks it's going to make a big impact in reducing deaths. this new legislation would make it mandatory for anyone convicted of driving under the

influence to installed aen ignition interlock device or ied. hill says data shows repeat dui offenders make up a third of all annual dii convictions. it would force first time offenders to install an iid. >> i think it's fine as long as they have done the due diligence and know the amount the program will cost the taxpayers is going to be outweighed by the benefit of the taxpayers. >> reporter: they support hills bill. they have been saturating bay area roads looking for impaired drivers during the holiday season and will be out in force for new years eve. hill will be unvailing the bill at 10:00 a.m. in redwood city. he says 20t other states require the devices for offenders and there are four

counties in california that are already participating in a pilot program including alameda. dave. >> thank you. enter at your own risk. that is the warning posted along a beach after a weekend shark attack. when tonya park rangers say a man was dragged under water and bitten on the hip by a shark while surfing, the man in his 50s was able to paddle to shore and taken to a nearby hospital with what appeared to be nonlife threatening injuries. there were 12 other surfers in the waterth the time but the beach was not shut down. the shark was likely a young great week about 8-10 feet long. >> i don't care how big, it is big. let's check in with tori campbell. welcome back. let's see what is coming up on mornings on 2. >> coming up on mornings on 2 a popular holiday gift you probably got one or two. but what if you really don't

it is cold out there for some. the low clouds are holding some of the temps up believe it or not. very cold air and also the breeze is going to be cranking up here. it's associated with that little system. that little guy. up in the pacific northwest from palm springs to san diego. there the low clouds seem to be enhancing a little bit. some of that fog is drifting around. reducing visibility. a lot more 40s. there are a few 30s to the north. a couple upper 20s. low 30s for some. clear lake 27. 28 in grayton. 29 in sebastopol. very cold up into billings. denmark down to albuquerque. cold air not only there but also here. associated with that we will get on the western edge of that

system. 19. tahoe up in reno. it will be below see row in the next couple of days. that cold air begins to move in. i think some of the temperatures will take a pretty good plunge and that breeze will really crank up as low pressure dives to southern california. and high pressure to the north. here comes that cold air. tomorrow morning i mean sometime before noon we will set our temperatures. possibility of a high wind warning will be issued for the north and east bay hills. this will be the coldest air of the season. and then you put the -- partly cloudy up in tahoe. look at the lows over the next couple of days. they will go easily below zero. partly cloudy some morning fog and low clouds. some sun but cool out. 50s on your temps. but then by tomorrow if we have

welcome back to the morning news. police in sunnyvale investigating a shooting that injured a 20-year-old man. it happened just after 3:00 yesterday morning on north fair oaks avenue. police say it may have started with an argument between two people who live across the street from each other. police say the wounded man is expected to survive. we now know the identity of the sign list hit and killed. herman died saturday when aswerved to avoid a collision with two other cyclist and hit by a truck. he was an assistant principal. shum was riding with a group of
