we may get a sprinkle over night but the big story is going to be the cold weather and the wind. there is a wind advisory that starts tomorrow morning, lasts into wednesday afternoon. wind gusts could reach 45 miles per hour around the bay to 60 miles per hour in the hills. that is enough to bring down trees as well as power lines. we will track that for you. once the wind subsides the coldest air will move in in time for new year's eve. when i come back we will have a look at the system and what you can expect for the week ahead. >> thank you. now to ktvu's john fowler where a lot of folks are preparing for the colder weather. looks cold out there. >> reporter: it feels cold. i should have left with my gloves and earmuffs. i want you to look at highway 24. this inland valley is going to get very, very cold.

heat. >> reporter: heat is relative. the good news with the wind coming in, spare the air may be lifted. >> john fowler, thank you. the cold snap prompted those that provide shelter to the homeless to extend their service. in san jose they will allow those seeking shelter to remain inside tomorrow during the day. they have seen an increase of people because of the cold weather and has been near capacity. the shelter is reallocating beds to make room for all those on the streets. >> it is very upsetting for us during this time of year. most of the people who come in are homeless. they have been out for long periods of time and they have serious health problems. >> the largest shelter will allow people to stay inside on

new year's day. providers say on any night there are some 7500 homeless people and only 1,000 beds. rosemary orozco will be back with more on the cold and wind. the end of an era for the san francisco 49ers. several sources reported that jim harbaugh has now signed a big deal with the university of michigan and tonight we are hearing from 49ers owner jed york about why he decided to go in a new direction. joe fonzi here is now with the spin. >> after months of speculation we at last know jim harbaugh's future. saying it was a mutual decision. today jim harbaugh's former players were cleaning out their lockers for an off season that begins a month earlier than it did the last three years.

the ceo and the general manager met with the media today answer questions about why one of the most successful coaches in team history had to go. >> he was a great teacher. whether that was players or other coaches. you look at his coaching tree, i think if you look in the 49ers hall of fame down the road, you know, i want to say as of 2013, 29-32 coaches in the nfl had a direct or indirect relationship with bill. and that is what made this organization successful. >> we are looking for teachers. people that can come in, teach the game at a high level and play and get our players to play as consistentlies a

two high school basketball teams in northern california were told they couldn't play after wearing t-shirts that read i can't breathe. that decision outraged some people who said not letting them play is a violation of freedom of speech. ktvu's cristina rendon tells us what happened next. >> reporter: controversial when the high school girls and boys basketball teams were warming up wearing t-shirts that read i can't breathe. it prompted the high school to uninvite them to the basketball tournament. the boys team was reinstated after agreeing to not wear the shirts but the girls protested this morning on the steps of the high school. >> they said they would throw us out if we wore the shirts. me and my teammates walked up with our shirts and acted like normal. we walked in. >> reporter: the principal

initially said the players were uninvited because the shirts could prompt a safety issue they weren't equipped to deal with. an attorney says just before they were going to file a complaint officials changed their mind. >> these are kids who we should teach them the power of the first amendment rather than restricting it. >> reporter: they will be allowed to wear the t-shirts in reference to the last words eric garner spoke. they say they just wanted to raise awareness of police brutality. >> it was about, like, freedom of speech. we wanted to raise awareness for this cause. i am happy with how it ended. >> it is unclear if the team will be allowed to play in the tournament. their spot has already been taken by another team.

cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we heard back from the school district, they said under the circumstances we believe that focusing on maintaining a safe environment rather than on attire will harmonize our objects to make a political statement. police say two men are behind bars following a chase that started in san francisco, went across the bay and ended up in san leandro about 8:30 a.m. this morning. police spotted a stolen van and tried to pull the driver over. however it van took off. police say the passenger jumped out, and tried to escape, he was arrested. and the driver ditched the van and ran away and a woman described for us what she saw. >> when we got to the park,

crossed the bridge, they had their weapons drawn and that is when we knew something was going on. >> police found the driver. he was taken to the hospital to be checked out. experts say the drought is taking a toll on wildlife desperate for food and water. they have been swamped with squirrels. they have helped 2200 baby squirrels this year compared to 1800 last year. officials say the drought is also forced more deers and bear on to highways. such a bizarre sight. our meteorologist rosemary orozco is in for our chief bill

martin. could we be seeing snow? >> the system from canada could bring snow to maybe mount hamilton, but it is moisture starved. we don't have a lot of moisture to work with. let's look at what is happening. the system is pulling into northern california. if you look really close you can see some of the green and the white lighting up in the area. light scattered showers over northern california. tonight and over night hours, it will come our way. i will lay that out for you as well. you can see it still in areas of ueka. over night you can see how the circulation moves through the bay area. clouds. perhaps maybe we will see a little bit out of this. the sierra is likely to get snow. that is exciting. for us at home we may only see a trace or so. tomorrow morning, it is already

out of here. pushing into southern california. with snow showers continuing over the sierra. on the back side the issue is the wind. i will show you tomorrow morning, about 9:00 a.m., already turning breezy. 10-15, 20 miles per hour with stronger winds over the north bay. by the afternoon and evening, 25 to 35. the wind gusts 45 for the bay area and hills could see the wind gusts to 60. and that is for tuesday and wednesday. tahoe, snow showers in the forecast. wednesday 4 degrees to start the morning and by new year's day below zero to start the morning. at home we start with 30s and low 40s tomorrow. as the winds pick up it will feel blustery, upper 40s to low 50s for the afternoon and the
