of dollars. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. a noticeably colder start to the day as temperatures dipped for the last few days of 2014. a high wind advisory is in effect. take a look at this tree. it came down on top of a parked car in oakland. and this is on party drive near swan way, not far from the oakland airport. steve paulson joins us live from outside the comfortable studio right now as temperatures are pretty chilly. >> reporter: there are a lot of reports of downed trees around concord. numerous reports are beginning to come in. yes, it's clear. yes it's sunny but here comes the cold air. the breeze. we were out here a minute ago. it whipped you. not too bad this morning but then things really begin to pick up here. temperatures now -- they started off in the 30s and 40s. we lost the low cloud deck. the breeze is showing signs of

concerned. it's very cold. i always try to dress warmly. that's my take. i can't stand being uncomfortable. ironically, i'm from chicago. >> for home les people the bikkardo shelter is open now through sunday. in about an hour, we'll learn just how much snow has fallen in the sierra. the department of water resources is conducting its first snow survey of the season right now. a couple of major storms have rolled through the sierra the past two months dropping several feet of new snow but based on electrical readings, the snowpack is only 57% of what it should be this time of year. today's manual survey near echo summit will give a more accurate reading. it is official. former 49ers' coach jim harbaugh has returned home to the university of michigan. just a couple of hours ago, harbaugh was officially introduced as the new head coach where he was a former star quarterback.

on alert after three people were beaten in separate attacks near the richmond b.a.r.t. station. katie utehs reports on the steps police are taking to find the suspect and how you can avoid becoming a victim. >> reporter: police say this morning they are following up with the victims to try to get a better description of the robber. in one of these cases, the woman was beaten so severely she had to be taken to kaiser hospital to injuries to her eye. this morning, she's in stable condition. all three of the robberies happened within an hour last night after 8:00 near the richmond b.a.r.t. station. in each case, the victim was walking alone when the robber approached and took their cell phone and money. riders say they are not surprised by the attacks since there are a lot of people to target who may be walking home from the b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. riders are on alert and that's exactly what police say you should be doing as well. >> i look at my surroundings. so i think that's smart. when i park at the parking lot,

because i didn't park today, i try to go out with the group. >> around the holidays, people send to be more in a hurry, i think. not really paying attention to what's around then. we always suggest to people if you are out walking not to keep your head buried in your cell phone. be aware of your surrounding. >> reporter: police at this point have a vague description of the robber to go off. he's described as 5'8" to 5'10" and wearing all black. if you see anything suspicious, you are asked to call the richmond police. in richmond, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. the napa county sheriff's department is investigating the theft of rare and expensive wines from the french laundry restaurant. it was burglarizedded on christmas day. the chef thomas keller tweeted the wine bottles stolen will raise red flags if they surface in public. he didn't stay which bottles were stolen or how many but they include french burgundy from the napa valley. they are priced between $3,000

rabies tests on a coyote from attacks on christmas day. a man said the coyote ran up and bit his son on the leg around 5:30 christmas evening. about ten minutes later, a man reported he was bit by a coyote as he went to his car. shortly after that, another man says the coyote chased him. police found the coyote on needle court and felt it best to put the animal down. bherkly police are searching for the man who shot a man to death and left a woman wounded. it happened around 9:45 in a parking lot near san pablo and university avenues. officers found the two victims near their parked car.

the man was pronounced dead at the scene. the woman was rushed to highland hospital. she's expected to survive. police say the shooter opened fire with a shot gun and according to a report from the san francisco chronicle. this shooting may have been the result of a medical marijuana robbery. >> we don't think is a random event. we're trying to determine how the shooting occurred or where they may have been. we don't believe it's random. but we are trying to determine exactly how it occurred and that will be part of the process during the investigation. >> police the shooter jumped into a car with several other people and sped off. this was the city of berkeley's fourth homicide of the year. in emeryville, police are searching for two men who shot a 26-year-old man in the face at the 76 gas station on powell street. it happened about 7:00 last night. police say the victim is expected to survive and now they are searching for two suspects, one who was armed with a shot gun and the other who had a pistol. it's a big thank you today

to a 12-year-old san diego girl from the san francisco fire department. >> certificate of honor presented to jessica for making the world a better place. >> jessica arrived with her parents and 20 bags of stuffed animals that firefighters can give to children impacted by emergencies. she says the we care bears project began three years ago when she decided to give a bag of her stuffed animals to a fire station across the street. she's expanding her project with the help of a $50,000 grant. >> i hope that they go to kids who really need them so if they are hurt or maybe injured or something like that. >> we have 20 bags to start with. they will be carried by our battalion chief, assistant chief and rescue captain. >> the fire chief is treating jessica to a ride on a fire boat and a trip to ghiradelli

square this afternoon. jessica said the grant money is being used to create starter kits for other people who want to start their own we care bears chapter. tomorrow night will be very busy for taxis and their at- base ride competitors. uber and lyft are warning users to expect higher rates. on new year's eve, you could pay five times the normal rate. uber said there will be no cap on its surge pricing. another app called flywheel, may be the best deal around. 90% of san francisco cabs use that app. flywheel will be offering a flat $10 rate. that will be for all kinds within san francisco from 8:00 p.m. tomorrow evening until 3:00 a.m. thursday morning. despite the good deal for passengers, the drivers will still make good money. they will get paid double what the metered rates would have been. for those taking bart, they plan to extend service until

3:00 a.m. trains are scheduled to run every 20 minutes after midnight and on new year's day, b.a.r.t. service will operate on its sunday holiday schedule. the first train will be set to take off 8:00. the agency is switching out the seats to vinyl streets. they are easier to clean. it cost about $6 million to change all of the seats in the 669-railcar fleet. well, wool anything sounds pretty good right about now. it's cold out there. fairfield by the way, i want to mention this, travis is 49 des -- degrees. wind gusting to 43 miles an hour. i will day the wind machines are rolling along. especially out to the valley.

it cranked up early. out towards rio vista, sacramento, fairfield, vacaville. now everybody is in on it. 40s and 50s on the temperatures. i don't think they will get too much warmer. take your pick. santa rosa gusts to 41. napa airport, 39. 29 novato. 40 oakland airport. 43 fairfield. concord which -- had some fog early. now 36. that wichs out net fog or any clouds. san jose 25. livermore gusts to 38 out of the north. northeast for hayward to 35 miles per hour and half moon bay right out of the due north gusting to 32. san francisco, 34. dubose triangle take any area you want. i saw 27 to 34 around presidio and also along the embarcadero about 8:00. it was just crazy windy. wind advisories are out. 55 to 60 miles an hour tonight into tomorrow. by this time tomorrow, everything starts to calm down but the low is forming.

some pretty good snow up to the sierra. a couple of reports around 7 to 10 inches. that's a powdery snow. as this low forms in same, as it wraps up, that's giving the strong pressure gradeiant. you get a north wind, not too bad. sebastopol 25. 40s and 50s for others. pittsburg made it to 39. brentwood, probably warmer than that. some areas continue to be quite cool. low 50s or 40s. higher elevations are stuck in the 40s. some areas will not get out of the upper 40s as well. menlo park made it to 34 this morning. when the wind tails off we'll see 20s over the next few mornings. 60%, 70% of the country really cold. miami is warm. the rest into a deep plunge on the cold air. 18 in tahoe. windchill 3. light snow being reported up there. finally some good knew winter like in the sierra nevada. ukiah, 52. sacramento, 50. if you are heading up there, the wind which was not a factor

early this morning is now as it begins to crank up a little bit. so wind advisory until 5:00. snow showers decrease. the snow level is coming down. watch how the cloud cover gets obliterated as the wind goes north to south. the cold air is filter in between now and 6:00. if you don't have to go anywhere, hunker down, it will be a cold and windy day. it's sunny. but we do have the wind advisory after temperatures. a lot of upper 40s. higher elevations or very low 50s here for some. in fact, some. higher elevations, high wind warning would not surprise me. it will be a windy, windy day. at least it's sunny. southern california, las vegas into arizona, phoenix. could be dealing with some heavy-duty snow over the next 24, 36 hours. we're looking for a 45rd freeze once the wind dies down. that should be on new year's day. >> cold. >> and black ice possibly. >> black ice. there's still some water coming on the back roads. >> uh-huh. >> that will all freeze. >> drive carefully. >> you bet. another company that makes

caramel apples has issued a recall. the company made the announcement yesterday. it provides apples to california snack foods and missouri 'happy apples. the cdc says the outbreak has affected 29 people in ten states including an elderly woman from santa cruz who died from the bacteria. as 2014 comes to a close, we're taking a look back at the year in sports. the first little leaguer to make the cover of "sports illustrated." as well saying fairwell to the captain and the giants bring another championship.
