rains, these trees battling these winds are a drought stressed. >> gusty winds collapsed this big uric uric tree. fortunately, no one seriously hurt. high winds whipped branches into power lines across the bay area. this incident in samona county, arking power lines caused widespread power outages. we saw pg&e crews positioning in advance of the wind storm to places they had predicted would be trouble. >> our computer modeling and our in house meteorology department, that allows us to identify in advance what areas are most likely to be hardest hit. >> many trees fell at higher elevations where winds were strongest. some even at sea level, like this one near the oakland airport couldn't withstand the winds. no one was hurt here either. it wasn't all bad news.

6:04 pm
tough getting around the bay area. fallen trees blocked streets and bart tracks. ktvu's ali rasmus is live at the bay bridge toll plaza where cars are being blown all over the road. ali. >> we were on the bay bridge earlier this afternoon, definitely some white knuckle driving as you were coming over to oakland. with every gust of wind, you could feel it push against the side of our live track. now we are at the toll plaza, you can see and feel the wind is still howling here. it's not having an impact on traffic here at the toll plaza. cars moving through just fine. on the other side of the toll plaza, we do see cars and a lot of brake lights. drivers take it slow as they get on to the eastern span of the bridge because the wind is coming across pretty strongly. in fact, looking over at the flag post, you can see the wind whipping back and forth. we have other traffic problems to tell you about. northbound 238, before 880,
6:05 pm
that is shut down in both directions. southbound 880 connector route to southbound 238. also shut down because of a downed tree in that area. there is no estimated time to reopen that. so, if you're headed in that direction, try to find some other way to get around. it's going to be closed for awhile. in vallejo, this is the scene about an hour ago when firefighters had to take a chain saw to break apart part of a tree that had come down on the roadway there. the two right lanes at the eastbound 80 near tennessee street in vallejo remain closed. they don't know when those will open either. now, bart commuters have had a frustrating day, too, because of this windy weather with trees and debris shutting down tracks between daly city and 24th street in san francisco. also, some problems with wind blown debris on the tracks. between concord and the pleasant hill stations. bart had to set up a bus bridge to transport passengers back and forth and bart service stopped between hayward and
6:06 pm
south hayward on the fremont, richmond, and daily city directions because of wind blown debris on the tracks there. so, this is the scene on another rail line. this is in jack london square early this afternoon. union pacific and amtrak trains were stalled for over an hour because of a mess of power lines near the track. again, that all happened because of the wind and we talked to one woman who saw it happen. >> i was standing in my loft and i heard rattling. so i looked out of the window and i felt a tree moving and it started to fall. it snapped the power line and there was a spark and then bam, straight down and i could hear the asphalt peeling up. >> and as if all of that weren't enough, ferry passengers, some of them were out of luck. ferry service was canceled this afternoon because of the high winds and made it too dangerous for those boats to come across.
6:07 pm
so, they had to transport people back and forth using buses as well. so didn't matter if you were taking bart on the road, in a ferry, on the rail lines, this high winds were definitely having an impact on people trying to get around the bay area. frank, back to you. >> i don't think i would want to be on a ferry right now. ali rasmus. >> you don't want to be outside. >> yeah, it's blowing like crazy out there. >> teeth are chattering. >> he told you, man. >> all right, thank you. ali rasmus there at bay bridge toll plaza. windy bay bridge toll plaza and rose marry, keep getting ali and rosemary mixed up. more on the high winds nay are hitting all over the bay area right now. >> from the bay area to ann arbor, michigan. jim harbaugh got a very warm welcome in his new hometown today. >> . >> michigan football history. >> cheering on their new football coach. some students even wore dockers and headsets to show their

6:11 pm
that vehicle. >> the video shows what happened after the officer caught up with him. he identifies himself as an offduty san jose police officer, but the women fight with him and eventually get away. investigators identify the driver as 32-year-old, gonzalez, and her sister as 21- year-old, charity gonzalez. police say there are warrants out for both of those women. the officer hasn't been named and a police spokesperson says it doesn't appear that he violated any department guidelines. >> the holidays are coming to a close and so is a new feature near san francisco's union square. winter walk is a temporary holiday park near the square where the streets closed off. new at 6:00, ktvu's noelle walker live near union square. many people want that temporary park to become permanent. >> reporter: gasia, they will roll up the green carpet at that park after the new year, but there's been plenty of feedback from people who would like to see cars off of that
