we're gonna take a look at the bridges. this is the richmond san rafael toll plaza. not a lot of folks out there. good for them. have the day off. i want to show you this shot. it's very so beautiful. just a beautiful drive as you make your way into san francisco. no delays. we have a wind advisory in effect for all. bridges except the golden gate. make sure you have both hands firmly on the steering wheel. back to the desk. neighborhoods throughout the bay area are still dealing with the damage from that powerful wind storm. pg&e crews have been working overnight to get the power back on. janine de la vega joins us live from san jose in a neighborhood where we understand the lights just came back on? >> reporter: yes, about an hour ago. when we first arrived here, it's across the street from silver creek. the lights were off. restored around 6:00 a.m.

pg&e crews are still blocking the northbound lanes here the silver creek road between capitol expressway and yerba buena road. there are a lot of detour signs around here. powerful winds caused a eucalyptus tree to fall on a power pole. one power pole after another snrapped laying across the road. a total of eight were taken down. that left the neighborhood in the dark. fortunately, silver creek high school is on holiday break. students and staff were not affected. residents relied on flashlights and candles. they are grateful the power is back on as they make their way back to work. >> my wife and my son go to the supermarket by candle. we have about four or five candle in the house. [laughter] >> reporter: this morning? >> this morning, when we wake up, electric out for many. >> reporter: there was other damage around the south bay. a downed tree around meridian

took down a wire at a senior center. various locations street lights were out. some stores were forced to close. 2,000 customers in the sphwheau south bay are still affected. weeferm's -- we're dealing with the cold and the wind. they have workers making sure residents don't come and -- and they follow the due -- detours. this woman has been pacing back and forth. i've been jogging in place. it will be colder tomorrow. right now, power is back on. dealing with the cold and the wind. >> all right, at least you have gloves. i think you said you forgot those yesterday. >> reporter: i did. they are helping and i still have the long johns on, too. >> thank you. well, pg&e has new numbers on the homes and misses in the bay area still without power due to the big wind storm.

the map shows there are 6,000 customers without power in san francisco. i like that picture there. that poor william -- woman getting blown away. 7:07. we're less than 14 hours away from new york city's big new year's eve countdown that everybody is talking about. the final prepareerations are underway for the big celebration in times square. that 12,000, 12,000-pound ball has been spruced up. it's been polished and tested to make sure everything is ready for tonight. thousands of police officers will be on patrol making sure tonight's celebration is a safe one. >> we will be patrolling the city by air, by sea, on the ground, and in the subway system. we have not received any specific threats but the city will be on high alert for any

sign of trouble. >> while the police for sure are keeping an out or for trouble, the eyes around the world will be focused on that ball there in times square. it's covered with 32,000 l.e.d. lights, more than 2500 panels are made out of waterford crystal. since the lights randomly change colors every couple of minutes, no one knows for sure what the color will look like -- what the ball will look like when it finally drops tonight. well, in las vegas, 340,000 people are expected to watch the fireworks show. but high winds could still cancel the show. organizers say they will wait until ten minutes before midnight to make the call. if the show does go on, it's scheduled to last seven minutes and 11 seconds. very precise. san francisco's fireworks show, meanwhile, is dperkted to last for 15 minutes -- expected to last for 15 minutes. there will be up to 5,000 different special effects at midnight. coming up at 7:30, we'll take you live to the embarcadero with a look ahead to the

waterfront other local festivities ringing in the new year. happening today, one of my favorite stories of the morning, goodwill industries, celebratingles end of 20 -- celebrating the end of 2014 with what it calls a donate-a- thon. alex savidge is live at the san francisco flagship store. up may have the best stoifer story of the morning. it sounds like a party. >> reporter: it's an absolute party. you can hear the band in the background. i will show you them in a second. this is your last chance of the year to get rid of those unwanted items you may have, clothing, computers and a car even, and donate it to goodwall. they will accept your donations. as we swing it around here, you have good listen to music. take a listen. this is the goodwill band. they found fantastic.

with 2014 winding found, we thought it would be fun to look back at some of the highlights of the year. one of the best way to see what people were focused on this year is what they looked up on the internet. joining me from new york is jesus garcia google trend expert. good morning. >> good morning. how are you? >> i'm great. first of all, i want to start off by asking how do you compile these lists? how does it work? >> we take a look at the hundreds of searches, hundreds of thousands of searches on google search. this is actually our 14th annual list, and we're taking a look at the year-end search. if, you know -- we develop

hundred of lists for over 70 countries. if we zero in on the u.s. we can take a look at the top five trending searches. where we have number 5. flappy bird which is a totally addictive mobile game released in 2013. but it became very popular in 2014. a lot of people have been talking about it especially because the creator pulled it out of market for a couple months because of a lot of attention and number 4, malaysia airlines. a lot of people were searching about the two flights that did not reach their destination. number 3, we had ebola. this is a disease that started off in africa. a lot of people wanted to know how it might be affecting them in the u.s. and find out how you can get ebola, what are the

symptoms and what you can do to avoid it. >> and we have the world cup for number 2 spot. it was a huge moment on a global scale. a lot of people were following their favorite teams, players, and all of the games results were also available online. and the number 1 top trending search in the u.s. was actually robin williams. for his untimely death, a lot of people wanted to find out how he died, where he died. they were not only searching for him, they were searching for some of his movies. among them we saw mrs. doubtfire, debt po et society. >> and certainly not surprising that that's the number one search, but it's interesting that was global since it was something that impacted us so closely here in the bay area. so i want to switch gears a little bit. you have a number, actually a lot of top ten lists, different categories.

since i work in the news, i thought i might take a guess at the top categories. starting with politics or politicians. for me i think one of the big political stories was the gop taking over the senate. but was that at the top of the list for politicians or politics? >> no. for politicians, president obama was at the top of the list. he's the commander-in-chief and a lot of people have been searching for him, continue to search for him especially around some of the hot topics he's been talking about for the last couple of months. >> pop culture i'm thinking the kardashians. they did have a big year. kim came in number two. number one was jennifer lawrence who has been all over the magazines and very popular because of the hunger games movies that she's been doing. a lot of people have been following her as well. >> i'm afraid that's all we have the time for.

but again, we've been joined live by jesus garcia google trends expert from new york. thank you so much for your time and happy new year. >> very good. very interesting. thank you both. 7:20. in other news this morning, san jose police, they are defending an off-duty officer seen on cell phone video trying to restrain a woman and hemp sister. now, take a look. this happened in september at an apartment complex parking lot. police say the women were in their car when they hit the officer's personal vehicle and drove off. the man followed the car, identified himself as a police officer. at one point -- and you can see on the video, 30-year-old tazman gonzales, struggled with him, bit him. her sister charity starting pulling at the officer. both women they -- then were able to get in the car and drove off. the police department said the officer did not appear to violate any department guidelines and they say he reported this incident immediately. >> he filled out the -- use of

force documentation, which any officers would fill out any time you place your hand on somebody. >> now, san jose police say if an off-duty police officer is trying to pull you over, drive to a public place. ask for the officer's name and badge number. then call the police department to verify you are actually dealing with a police officer and not an impersonator. >> that's good advice. >> there are some people who do that, pretend they are cops and they end up in a bad situation. let's check in with tara, covering traffic for us. what's going on in the peninsula? a road closure? >> yes, in burlingame we have a downed tree on the 800 block of el camino real. the roadway is closed and it won't open until 11:00. let's take a look at 101 through san jose. traffic on the right-hand side is northbound as you make the drive toward the san jose airport. and 880 near the oakland

coliseum, no delays. at the bay bridge toll plaza, no congestion. all of your bridges are under a wind advisory except for the golden gate bridge. 7:22. here's steve. we do have clear skies here. that's for sure. but boy, is it cold. it's only gonna get colder tonight. we have the wind advisory until noon. not as bad as it was yesterday. there's still a few areas where it's gusting over 35 miles an hour. get ready for the cold. wind advisory. a couple possibilities for downed trees and outages. we'll focus our attention on the freeze warning. that starts tonight. there will be teens up in the north bay, low to mid-20s in areas that are wind protected. the breeze will tail off. a couple of 20s. 30s, contoerd, 31. walnut creek was 29. now 33. a little hint of a breeze. take that temperature right back up. half moon bay had gusts to 35. santa rosa is 36. the breeze is the key for another couple of hours at

area. they will be lining the embarcadero this morning. the porta-potties are set up. i know it's funny to talk about. those are important. they are set up along here at the embarcadero as well. but thousands of people are expected to be here in the city tonight. in terms of this event here along the embarcadero, it's free. we talked about the high winds and choppy waters on the bay, especially yesterday. fireworks crews had a tough time setting up for the estimated 5,000 fireworks shells for tonight. they are betting on the winds dying down by midday. steve will have more on the winds and when they will calm down or when it will calm down a little bit. but again, thousands of people are expected here tonight. didn't stop them from getting ready. in the meantime, they say expect quite a show to ring in 2015. >> at about 20 seconds before mid night, you will actually -- midnight, you will see effects starting to rise. and then at midnight the first effects tack place in the sky.

place, too. bay area cities are advising everybody use public transportation tonight. muni, caltrain, samtran and vta are offering free rides starting at 8:00 p.m. and b.a.r.t., b.a.r.t. will run until 3:00 a.m. tomorrow. there will be extra b.a.r.t. trains after the fireworks show along the embarcadero. some of those b.a.r.t. trains are gonna stop the busy stops, embarcadero, montgomery and west oakland stations. 7:38. police officers in sonoma county are boosting patrols tonight for new year's eve. the overtime for the extra officers is being funded by state grants aimed at stopping drunk driving. ten additional chp officers will on on patrol to help out law enforcement agencies. some businesses are helping people get home safely. they are offering free nonalcoholic drinks to designated drivers or helping people find a safe ride home. netflix is helping parents ring in the new year with a

little alone time. ♪ >> it's new year's eve. >> this is the trailer for a three-minute streaming netflix video designed to trick the little ones. don't tell them. but this is a fake new year's eve countdown to the fake 2015 arriving. and then you can put them to bed. the bay area's big wind storm is not over quite yet. it's down but not over. the high wind advisory stays in effect until noon. pg&e crews are busy trying to get power back on to customers who lost power after a cold wind battled the bay area yesterday. some of the worst wind damage was in san jose. one eucalyptus tree knocked down eight power poles right outside of silver creek high school.

they've been working out there. strong winds caused havoc yesterday for thousands of b.a.r.t. riders. a pig tree fell onto the tracks -- big tree fell onto the tracks in daly city yesterday afternoon. that stopped trains in both directions between san francisco and millbrae. wind-blown degree disrupted service between the pleasant hill and concord b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. sent out buses to rescue stranded customers. there was a lot going on across the bay area. we wanted to share a few pictures that our viewers are santa claraing. this is from greg gonzalez. he says a tree fell on a car garage in gateway apartments in san leandro. you can see right there. that used to be the carport. what a mess out there. then connie sent us this picture and pretty remarkable here. i will pull up the picture so many you can she -- there you go. there's the tree. there's the root. but here is the story behind

it. after spending three days fixing a leaky room, steve and robbie were stunned to find three trees fell on this freshly repaired roof. kind of hurts you, resulting from the high winds. and then this one, mary sent us this picture. this happened at 4:25 yesterday afternoon in fremont. that's a big tree. there is a car right there in the corner. it's not just pictures we are gating. we got interesting video. tak there it goes. yes. and that's a porta-potty. there comes its friend following close behind. it's just kind of funny. it's moving at a pretty good clip there. that's near the downtown ice skating rink and the fairmont hotel. i want to show you this video. this is all left afternoon around 2:45. this is mace on circle -- mason circle. surveillance cameras showing how quickly it can happen. let's see it again. boom. it comes down quickly.

beian sea drive near -- casbian sea drive near stokes street. less than a mile away there was another car fire on willow. we don't know if they are related to other suspicious fires. back on monday, a portable classroom caught fire while police in campbell tweeted this photo of a burning suv on south bascom avenue. there were two more car fires on bascom early tuesday morning. and just before christmas, somebody torched three vehicles. investigators have been trying to figure out how these fires started. 7:43. a child's toy, raising some serious concern among parents nationwide. coming up in the next hour of "mornings on 2," what play dough claims this toy is supposed to be used for. 280 looking good at this hour. we have some examples of transportation that you can take tonight if you are planning on celebrating new

continuing coverage of the search for the missing air plane. rough seas are hampering the effort to reach the wreckage located at sonar. the first bodies arrived in indonesia today. caskets labeled with numbers were carried by indonesian military personnel. seven bodies have been recovered so far including a

flight attendant in her uniform. it will be taken to a hospital to be identified. ambulancenss and stretchers are lined up at the airport. the ceo says the airline is committed to helping the families of the victims. >> we will be there for the staff even all of the families -- even after all of this is over. >> it's still unclear exactly what brought the airliner down but bad weather is believed to have played a part. we learned strong currents are moving what are believed to be large parts of the plane. investigators expect to have a better understanding of what happened once the jet's voice and flight data recorders are recovered.

expressway. there are repairs that need to be done. even though the power is back on, you can see there's wires down and power poles on the ground. so again, still work that needs to be done. powerful winds caused a tree to fall on a power pole yesterday afternoon. one power pole after another snapped across the road. a total of eight were taken down. that left the neighborhood in the dark. fortunately, sill veer creek school is on break -- sim ver creek -- silver creek is on break. so they are not affected. now any are just dealing with the drop in temperatures. >> it's very cold inside. there's no kind of utilities at all. it's uncomfortable and will only get worse during the night. >> the wind too strong. driving on the freeway my car

sags. most people worry and get about 40, 45 miles per hour. >> reporter: there was other damage around the south bay. a downed tree near meridian and kerrcy took down a wire in front of a senior living facility. at various location, street lights were out. even valley fair mall lost electricity and some stores were forced to close. pg&e says 1100 customers in the south bay are still affected. everybody out here in the silver creek neighborhood had their power restored by 6:00 a.m. right now, everyone is dealing with the told. we've seen a lot of people wearing heavy layers of clothe. the winds died down. it's supposed to be cooler. pg&e crews still have a lot of work here that needs to be done. but good news is that these people in this neighborhood have their electricity back. dave? >> okay. thank you. slowly but surely getting the power back. >> they need to have heat in

the house. well, pg&e has new numbers on the homes and businesses in the bay area still without power. there are now 6400 customers without power in san francisco. 1100 in the south bay. 800 are in the back on the peninsula. 700 in the east bay. and 100 in the north bay. 8:07. well, today is a dead whine day for critical -- deadline day for critical repair work on the new bay bridge. caltrans threatens to fine the main contractor on the new eastern span for the work that was supposed to be finished today. that includes repairing rust damaged paint and rain water damage near the tower. caltrans could charge that contractor $25,000 a day. goodwill industries is encouraging people to get a head start on new year's resolution that include getting unwanted stuff out of the house and helping others. alex savidge is live at goodwill's flagship store in san francisco which is throwing

in new york city, the mayor and union met behind closed doors trying to ease the tensions boiling over. take a look. you can see mayor deblass yoarriveing at the -- deblasio arriving with the union, police commissioner and other top police department leaders. union leaders are accusing the mayor of supporting anti-police protests after the controversial grand jury decision in the death of it eric garner. one union member said nothing was resolved. >> there was a number of discussions, especially about the safety issues that are members face. there was no resolve and our thought here today is that actions speak louder than word. as for mayor deblasio, he released a statement saying he's focused on building a productive dialogue and moving forward with the police department. and in the meantime, the nation's largest police department is sending its top brass to an in-house twitter

be -- especially along the embarcadero, that event for new year's eve will be free. but we talked about the high winds and choppy waters on the bay and fireworks crews had to be careful in setting up the estimated 5,000 fireworks shells for tonight. they say they had a tough time standing but the show will go on tonight. they are betting on the winds dying down to do the final prep. steve touched upon that. but the weather did not stop them from getting ready. in the meantime, they say they expect quite a show to ring in 2015. >> we've got about 4,000 to 5,000 different effects that will happen over a 15-minute span. they will range in altitudes from about maybe 150 feet off the barge to 1,000 feet in the sky. so we'll have a nice layering of effects. >> i'm gonna have a celebration at home and kind of play it by ear. >> not planning to go out at all? >> we might. it's ambitious. we haven't decided. >> reporter: was 2014 a good

may be affected by those who are drunk. that's serious advice. use public transportation tonight. muni, caltrain, samtrans and vt ta. , they are all offering free rides starting at 8:00 p.m. b.a.r.t. will run until 3:00 a there will be extra trains after the fireworks show along the embarcadero but some of the b.a.r.t. trains will skip the busy stops including embarcadero, montgomery and the west oakland stations. the chp and the state office of traffic safety they've lunched a new app to encourage safe driving tonight and all year long. it's called ddvip. it lets people request a ride home from transportation companies like uber or lyft and designated drivers, you can find restaurants offering you free or discounted nonalcoholic beverages and food. 8:37. more police officers will be on patrol in sonoma county tonight for new year's eve.

in fact, a high wind advisory remains in effect until noon today and pg&e crews are still busy getting the power back on for thousands of customers who lost power after that really coast cold blustery wind battered the bay area yesterday. some of the worst wind damage was in san jose, one tree knocked down eight power poles outside silver creek high school. the strong winds also caused havoc for thousands of b.a.r.t. riders yesterday afternoon. a large tree fell on the tracks near daly city early yesterday afternoon. that stopped trains in both directions between san francisco and millbrae for three hours. wind blown debris also disrupted service between the pleasant hill and concord b.a.r.t. stations. b.a.r.t. sent out buses to pick up stranded passengers. i did have tara, she checked. no wind delays at sfo. it changed their flight pattern. they very rarely do this but they had to land planes over
