there's a frost advisory out. it's for san francisco and the freeze warning is out for the inland valleys. santa rosa is at 20 degrees. the low responsible for the cold and wind is headed off to arizona. las vegas will not be in on the snow today. the temperatures, though, 30s for some. i did see 28. fairfield, 29. they're getting down there. any breeze and it's holding it up. moving out of southern california, so that allows all the breeze to all -- tail off. southern california that, system moves out. that allows pressure to move in there. that's going to give us slightly warmer temperatures here. sunny and chilly, a cold morning but a lot of temps. a few areas pushing the upper 50s. let's send it back to the desk. the chp is trying to determine what led up to a deadly crash

on 580 near the macarthur boulevard off ramp. it happened before 3:30 this morning. investigators say one person was killed in a single car crash. another was injured. the crash shut down the off ramp for two hours. it reopened just about a half hour ago. in other traffic news, expected to be a pretty light day. most people not working because of the holiday. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. new this morning, police in san jose investigating the first shooting of the new year. two men were shot about 12:30 this morning outside of a nightclub. ktvu is live at the scene now to tell us what people in the area are saying about it. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. police tell me that the shooting did not happen inside the nightclub. it happened just outside here

near capital expressway and mclaughlin avenue. now, bullet casings were found here on the street near the sidewalk, but a lot of the commotion did happen in the parking lot. police say at around 12:30, we were all called to rain lounge of shots were fired. they found two men, each suffering from a gunshot wound. they're rushed to a local hospital. i've been told they were in critical condition. officersofficers cordoned off the area. we're told by police it appears some type of disturbance or fight happened inside the nightclub and trickled inside. that's when the shots were fired. we saw employees leave, but they would not give details on what happened. here's what one man who works nearby has to stay about the club. >> it would be a rowdy crowd.

they closed it down and recently opened this one. it's not even been a month it's been there. >> and to hear about this shooting. >> it's crazy, you know, nobody likes to hear something like that, especially starting out the new year. >> police spent hours collecting evidence and gathering information from witnesses who they say have been cooperating. they are trying to access surveillance video to see if it will be helpful. we have been told that the victims do appear to be in their low 20s as far as a motive in this shooting, again, this is still very early on in this investigation. so we just don't know. all we're hearing is that it was some sort of disturbance. we don't know yet if the victims were patrons in all of this club or if they're from the area, but we're hoping to get more information soon. so far, no arrests. back to you. >> all right. we'll talk to you later. thank you.

>> it is 6:05. happening now, san francisco is cleaning up after a blockbuster new year's celebration. this is a live picture of market street. looks like a street cleaner sweeping up, keeping everything looking nice and tidy. workers came in and removed the noise makers, confetti, and streamers that were in the area. it's pretty. some taxis crossing the street. tens of thousands of people packed the waterfront to watch the 15-minute fireworks show. between 100 to 1,000 feet into the air and organizers told us each year they try to top the previous year. the light show did not

disappoint. >> it's great. we loved it. we've been waiting a long time just to see it. we loved it. >> although the temperatures dipped into the 40s overnight, they still had a good time. a lot of people still drove and after the fireworks show, it took an hour to get to the bay bridge. and the firework show did prove to be a distraction on the road. this is from one of our producers. you can see the cars pulled over with people actually getting out to watch the fireworks. we're told people went on their way once the fireworks were over and there were no accidents result of people stopping. >> there was also a protest demonstration during the new new year's celebration, but there were no problems.

>> about 50 protesters walked to the ferry building. they were holding antipolice banners. one of the sign said no new year under this old system. we can't breathe. a similar protest in oakland ended with at least 29 arrests. a ktvu assignment editor took this picture. police say the protest is peaceful up until a couple of demonstrators started throwing bricks and bottles at police. they set off illegal fireworks. the protesters have been booked on vandalism, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon. this first day of 2015 marks the sixth anniversary of the

fatal police shooting of oscar grant. today a vigil will be held in his memory at the bart station where the shooting occurred new year's day, 2009. the suspect claims he shot grant by mistake. he meant to use his taser instead of his gun. the new year means a lot of new laws taking effect. a look at some of the ways the rules are changing in 2015. good morning. >> good morning to you. from driver's license to dogs dining out, there are new state laws dealing with a hole host of issues. first, a big one, the deals with immigration, people living in this country illegally can legally get a california driver's license. supporters say this law will improve highway safety by requiring they pass a driver

test and get insurance as well. there's audrey's law, which will increase penalties for teenagers convicted of certain sex acts. it is named in memory of audrey potter. a 15-year-old saratoga girl. she was sexually assaulted when she was passed out at a party. audrey committed suicide just eight days after that assault. another state law taking effect today is designed to protect student athletes playing football and other contact sports here in california. students who suffer a head injury have to wait before they play again. there's only two full contact practices a week. the goal is to minimize injuries to the brain and concussions as well. >> and there's some good news for pet owners as well who like

to dine out with their pooches. under the a new law, you can now legally bring dogs along with you to restaurant patios. now, this is provided that the dogs remain under control and that the owners of the restaurant do not object. now, coming up at 6:30, we're going to talk about a new law that aims to make sure the chickens who lay eggs are not mistreated. we'll explain how that works coming up in a half hour. sam lacarto will be sworn in as new mayor today. he's already introduced key members of his staff as he replaces reed. pete constant is a former city councilman and will serves a part time senior advisor for

pension issues. well, we know of at least one baby whether or not is among the first to be born. a baby girl was delivered right at midnight. she weighs 8 pounds and is 21 inches long. doctors say both the baby and mother are doing well. no word on the baby's name, but the parents of mr. and mrs. liang, she's their second child. >> congratulations to all of them. >> congratulations. time is 6:12. i don't know if you made any new new year's resolution. you're perfect. >> i need goals. >> coming up next, the most popular resolutions around the world. >> plus, high winds, scary moments at a rose bowl fan festival. video of an incident that left four people hurt. a breeze is enough to hold some temps up. there are a lot of 30s and upper 20s.

championship game that's january 12th in texas. well, pasadena famous tournament of roses campaign. it's going to be cold out there. the coldest, 126- year history. the overnight temperatures were close to freezing that could tie an all-time low. they feel their tropical flowers right turn black because of the cold. they also added more glue to the floats to make them hold better and withstand the cold. some were using propane heaters to stay warm. look at this. tents outside the rose bowl blown into air, twisting in the wind. that's pretty dangerous too. four people suffered minor injuries from this dust devil. well, you can watch the tournament of roses parade live

to 29 degrees. santa rosa, 28. there's enough of a breeze holding things up. it may be tomorrow morning where the coldest temperatures will be be. we have frost advisories out. antty i don't care is in there. -- antioch is in there. it doesn't make much to hold that up. 36 freeman. 29 in gilroy. call conditions in the 20s. 30s for everybody else in the peninsula. foster city, 45. if the wind tails off, then you will see even colder temperatures. these all go until 19. there will be a few locations that can hit the teams. i think the freeze warning will be back tomorrow, but look at this. napa airport a little southeast at 12. concord south, fairfield is 5.

not much for hayward. livermore at 5. that's enough to keep the temps up. there's the big power house low as it starts to churn into the four corners, exit stage rite. it leaves southern california. there might be occasionally a few high clouds. this is a dry pattern. it's cold many places. backed down to the deep south and into the great lakes. it's four degrees up in tahoe. 11 in reno. so a cold pattern for california. the low moves out. things calm down a little bit and that means temperatures will warm up slightly. the lows will be colder this morning, so it's a push here. i guess at least been an offshore breeze. some areas can actually be warmer than those inland. a lot of sunshine here. upper 50s for some. near 60 it is others. temperatures looks like they're going to be on a fine line

lady gaga, iggy azalea. i should know that one. new beginning for a popular restaurant that was badly damaged in a fire. it opened last night with a special new year's eve dinner. it will resume full service tomorrow. owner and chef david kinch has spent years in his kitchen developing dishes. he said he's relieved to be back in action. >> this is what my passion is, what i've dedicated my life to. to be able to get back into it in the day-to-day operations is something i enjoy doing. working with people enjoy working with is a pleasing moment for me. >> new year's eve has always been a special tradition at -- and he's hoping in 2015, the restaurant will regain momentum it had six months ago before the fire. it started in an outdoor trash

can, causing a million dollars in damage. he's earned two michelin stars. it's considered to be one of the best restaurants in the world. a christmas fire in san jose, an act of generosity brought together long lost friends. they lost everything when their apartment here caught fire christmas day. well, rudy -- who owns the the half breed clothing company heard about this fire. he decided to donate clothing to the couple. when he contacted them, he realized he was donating clothing to two of his old high school friends. >> he realized when i said, hey, you're donating to us -- he was like, what? >> i would have done it for anybody in that situation, you know, christmas day. that's the worst. that's pretty bad. >> those two long lost friends,

not as chilly as it was yesterday there are a few 20s up there. santa rosa did say 2 at one time. i think the breeze kicked in and went back up to the 30s. there's a few in lake county. just haven't heard from anybody yet. there's enough breeze here. antioch is 29. brentwood 30. that's colder than alamo. that snow breeze, 29 or 20s for morgan hill and gilroy. that's a cold day for them. much, much warmer, foster city, san mateo, it was a pretty good spread there. 's enough of a breeze. if it says come, the temperatures takes a plunge. that's why some areas are holding into the 40s. a big strong low is moving out in the four corners.

changing in 2015. good morning, alex. >> good morning to you. state lawmakers have been busy addressing issues ranging from illegal immigration to dogs dining out. first of all a new law that's causing controversy. people living here can get a california driver's license. supporters say this will improve highway safety by requiring they pass a driver test and get auto insurance, but others argue this rewards illegal behavior. >> student athletes playing football. student who is suffer a head injury now have to wait seven days, and they also have to have a doctor's note before they can play again. the new law also limits high schools to just two full contact practices a week. the goal, of course, is to minimize brain injuries and concussions. and a new state law isn't so concerned about which came first, the chicken or the egg. the only thing that matters is

whether or not that chicken was treated humanely before it laid the egg. this law requires that every egg sold in california must come from a hen that had enough space to stand up, turn around, and stretch its wings inside its enclosure. we should point out there are lingering questions about what exactly farmers are supposed to do to meet the standards there. good news for people who like to dine out with your pooches, you can bring dogs along with you to restaurant patios that's provided the dogs are under control and in this particular case, the owners of the restaurant do not object. so they have the ability to object there. by the way, the lawmaker behind this bill said he pushed for this bill because she just wanted to make it legal to dine with your beagle. >> okay. poet and she didn't even know it. all right. thank you, alex. time, 6:33. happening now, the city of san francisco cleaning up after

last night's huge new year's celebration. we're live this morning. there are street sweepers out there. a few people walking the streets, buses out there. the workers overnight came in and quickly removed all the trash. we're showing them to you. they've got their brooms. they're moving all the noise makers, confetti, streamers, that were literring the streets and sidewalks as san francisco gets back to normal. some of the folks celebrated the new year with champagne and glamour in san francisco. >> always liked that song. san francisco symphony hosted this gala featuring family geicoer seth mac far land: he'll also a grammy nominated singer. tickets were up to $195 per person. one couple drove ten hours down

from oregon to celebrate 2015 in the bay area. it gives us a chance to dress up and have a great time and the laughing was thrown in too. >> big sales, top sellers at one market shop included spirits to make fancy cocktails and $300 bottles of champagne. >> wow. that's god to be very good champagne. 1million people gathered at times square in new york to watch the famous ball drop. there it goes. the 12,000-pound waterford crystal ball came down at the stroke of midnight. happy new year's is the sign.

visitors started lining up at noon to get a prime spot and new york police reported no mayor problems despite online threats of a new year's eve attack against the nypd for that controversial death of eric gardner. and sanitation crews call it their first big job. 137 workers, 38 leaf blowers and 36 mechanical sweepers to clean up times square. workers removed more than 52- tons of debris, to give you an idea of how much that is, it's the combined weight of about 530 men. time is 6:36. antipolice protesters vowed they're going to continue their movement throughout this new year. they blocked streets and vandalized a car. now, the situation was actually a lot calmer than what happened just hours early during an event called march to the arch. several dozen protesters broke

away and they actually stormed the police headquarters. they posted eviction notices on the police building saying they were going to reclaim the police police department. police officers eventually used pepper spray to break up this crowd. at least five people were arrested on charges of trespassing and assault. san jose took extra precautions overnight because of threats against police officers nationwide. every patrol consisted of two officers, making sure there was immediate backup. it's a step that's never been taken in the police station's history. the new mayor says he supported the police chief's plan. >> well, it's unfortunate that major city chiefs like their own are put in situation where is they have to double up in order to keep officers safe out there. it's already a dangerous enough job. >> the extra precautions are

just being taken for new year's celebrations. they say they can't do it on a regular basis because of staffing levels. >> it is 6:38. happening now, a new year and a new attitude. some people are resolving to shed those unwanted holiday pounds. tara moriarty is -- has expert tips to get or stay in shape. a lot of people gain a lot of weight between halloween and new year's. it's a good time to start. >> i just want to mention that i did not sign up for this. my producer signed me up for this. so clearly i need a little workout. that's okay. we're here at the 24-hour fitness center in hayward. this is spencer mills. he's the service manager here. you're going to walk us through some of these exercises you can do on this trx. >> absolutely. this is a little intimidating. >> a lot of people are intimidated when they first

come to the gym. it's all about keeping it simple and keeping it easy. we're going to work major muscle group this is morn. we're going to start with a simple back and bicep exercise. we're only using body weight here. >> i have a lot of that. so i think i should be good. >> you're telling me. so we're going the start repping it out. >> i want you to tell people exactly your story. it's very fascinating. when you first walked in here, you weighed over 300 pounds. >> i was 385 pounds. i was not happy with life, and i started working out at 24- hour fitness. i lost about 50 pounds in a couple of months and decided to get a job here. i've been coming along with the company ever since. the company is very much about improving people's lives through fitness. working here very much helped save my life and extend my life span by decades. >> so you want to do a lunge now? >> absolutely. we can immediately transition into a step back lunch. we were working our back and

biceps and core with stabilization. now we're going to go ahead and work lower body. we're trying to engage as many muscles with simple exercises as you can. >> how long do you have to do this to make a difference is this. >> well, we're putting exercises together and our heart rate is getting up. so really a good half hour and then you might hit a little bit of high intensity cardio. >> what about your stomach, a lot of women after they have kids, it's a weaker area. >> everything we're doing right now requires core stabilization. what we can do here is a simple squat exercise. as we do all of them, we want to squeeze through your core. so we're getting a core workout by keeping our back straight, focusing on tightening our core. you know, we're doing well here. >> okay. this is fun. really fun. thanks a lot, bran bon bailey -- brandon bailey for signing

6:45. 36 people were killed in a stampede during a new year's celebration in china.

it happened at shanghai's historic waterfront area about 11:30 last night. 47 people were injured, including 14 who were seriously hurt. it began as people scrambled for coupons that looked like dollar bills being thrown out of a third floor window. however the exact cause of the stampede is under investigation. 9 bodies have been recovered from the crash of the air asia flight. sea currents keep moving the plane debris. the plane crashed on sunday with 162 people on board. authorities are looking for the plane's fuselage as well as the flight's data recorders. >> one ship, which is equipped with underwater beacons to detect a black box signal and also equipped to detect metal

and give 3d underwater images that are already arrived on sight. shorts they they have identified one of the nine bodies that have been recovered. air safety officials say it could take a week to find those black boxes or the flight's dat recorders. time 6:47. apple facing a class action lawsuit. the lawsuit is claiming apple doesn't do enough to tell users exactly how much space the software will use on iphones and ipads. now, according to the lawsuit, ios8 eats up 23% of the advertised storage space on those devices. so far there's no comment from apple on the lawsuit. all right. it is 6:47. we want to check in with steve right now and see what's happening with the weather and still cold out there, steve. >> i was just looking. this is one of our staff observers who keeps great records. >> he's the best. >> how many times did san francisco have a temperature of

90 or higher, not to put you on the spot. >> zero. >> zero. for what it's worth. anyway, usually say see one or some, but they didn't this year. now, there are frost advisories out. that easter the bay. the freeze is still holding up. that's keeping these temps from plunging into colder categories. there are a few. i'm sure there's some in lake county. it's not often that brentwood is colder than alamo. if it's -- if you lose a breeze, down she goes. morgan hill, 29 degrees, 33 in saratoga. 45 at foster city. any breeze versus no breeze and you can get a good 15-degree

difference on some of these temps. there's enough of a breeze here. the wind barb shows the direction it's coming from. it's going to be a beautiful day. that gave us all the snow. i just received a picture from scottsdale, arizona snow. who says it didn't snow in the desert. there goes the low out into the plains. it will be a big weathermaker. there's a lot of cold air to work with. oklahoma city, 27. a little warmer than it was yesterday at this time. 37 down to atlanta. it's cold. four up in tahoe. 20s for sacramento. redding has a breeze. that's why they're 46 degrees. it will be a sunny day. that low is moving so far out of the picture that most of the breeze is really tailed off there. 's still enough of one. it's a dry pattern to the end of next week.

memberships. his office says jeb bush wants to remove himself from his private sector work so he can focus on the bid for the white house. a commissioner is facing several felony charges. 74-year-old wayne johnson served almost 40 years as the police commissioner for the tiny community of broadmore. he was recently arrested for stolen property, possessioning drugs without a prescription and johnson flatly denies doing anything wrong and says the charges are politically motivated. >> it's a witch hunt between the incompetent chief of police that's there. i don't have anything else to say. >> now, the arrest came after police searched johnson's two homes and car. he's free on $30,000 bail. he's due in court next month. 6:54. as we begin the new year, we want to take a look back.
