everything. chewing on stuff. keep him away from the mushrooms. >> reporter: every years dog die from mushroom poisoning. even kinds that are harm lose to humans. veterinarians say they could be brutal to pets. . >> become so weak. liver failure. and kidney failure. >> reporter: symptoms can take up to three days to develop. he says puppies are most at risk. mushrooms can take fishy, at least four varieties killed pets, including cats. treatment must be prompt. >> induce vomiting and give

them car coal. >> reporter: -- charcoal. >> reporter: if a pet eats one, bring a sample to the vet. >> kind of a shot in the dark that is she going to be okay? do i have to take her to the emergency room? something to watch for. >> reporter: veterinarians say keep your yards clear of mushrooms and use a leash when talking your dog. john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you very much. 2015 started off the same way 2014 ended, cold in the bay area. we saw a lot of folks bundled up. temperatures in the 50ss. but that is warm -- 50s. but that is warm compared to the rest of the country. minneapolis in the 20s today.

needed to stop the incidents of young african american men dying at the hands of police officers. >> going to have to come up with a way to hold officers accountable for their actions. and to focus on retraining officers before they make decisions to shoot and kill when it is not necessary. >> the theme of the memorial echoed that of recent protests that all lives matter. >> the community must walk forth in asking for that change to occur. and how do we do that? voting, education. >> reporter: oscar grant was killed new year's day by johannes mehserle six years ago today. the shooting was captured on cell phone video and sparked debate about the use of police force, particularly against young african americans. that debate boiled over in the

wake of police killings of two unarmed black men in missouri and new york. >> oscar was like the center point of what we see happening today across the country. because of that each year the vigil gets bigger, which is a sad note. >> reporter: many african american men say what happened to oscar grant and others forced them to be more cautious in dealing with police officers. >> make sure to keep my hands up, always make sure i am not doing anything to give them any reason to stop me and cause harm to me. >> reporter: oscar grant's family will continue to hold the tributes every new year's day to remember what happened to him and -- new year's day to remember what happened to him. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. an investigation is underway in san jose following a shooting outside a bar that left two people wounded. it happened at 12:30 a.m.

in the parking lot of the lounge. when officers arrived they found two men suffering from gun shot wounds. they were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. investigators say it appears an argument trickled outside. investigators collected evidence and talked to witnesses. [ indiscernible ] >> doesn't surprise me. >> investigators are hoping surveillance video will offer more clues as to what happened. no arrests have been made. a 23-year-old man is behind bars after he fired a gun at officers this morning when officers responded to a report of shots fired on first lane in san francisco. police say a man identify identified at ivan dejesus gomez opened fire. police arrested him a short

time later. man faces dui and vehicular manslaughter charges after a crash in oakland about 3:30 a.m. this morning on the onramp to eastbound 530. a woman who was in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver was arrested and booked into jail. gas prices continue a fall along with the price of crude oil and experts don't see that changing soon. however ktvu's tom vacar tells us gas prices in california could go up more than 30 cents a gallon. >> reporter: gas prices collapsed in the last few months. according to aaa everyone saved almost 44 bucks last year over the previous year's gas purchases. that is $115 a households and

14 billion more for the rest of the u.s. economy. gas plunged from last year's april high of $3.70 to yesterday's $2.26. perhaps within days the state is likely to impose a pollution tax on oil companies that they will pass on to consumers at 10 cents more a gallon. >> another tax. do we have a choice? really, they will impose it whether we like it or not. >> reporter: and then the federal gas tax, 18 cents on gas and 24 cents on diesel. that money is used to build and repair roads but it hasn't been raised since 1997. inflation ate 40% of its value while road building and maintenance costs sored. just to have the same purchasing power uncle sam would have to impose 8 cents. it would have to be raised more

than that to make up for years of deferred maintenance. >> if it will improve our roads, definitely. so many pot holes out there and lane closures and we can't use the roads to the full extent. >> i was a truck driver for 9 years. you go to all these different places and pay tolls and taxes and they don't do anything about the roads. >> i don't see a reason to raise the taxes. >> reporter: the state carbon tax could come at any moment, any raise in the federal taxes would have to go through congress and that could take a while. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. a 71-year-old man has gone missing on a road trip to southern california. police say he left his home yesterday morning to visit his brother in palm desert near palm springs. he called his brother at 8:30

her heroism to fight along side with her. she was my little wonder girl. >> reporter: in order to fight along side her her mother has been forced to close her bridle shop. this caught the attention of a photographer involved in the bat kid who after battling leukemia helped save san francisco. >> we have to come together and continue the fight. >> reporter: she organized a fundraiser in hopes of raising money and awareness of wild hood leukemia -- childhood leukemia. she lost a friend to wild hood leukemia -- childhood leukemia. >> i know the struggle. she is brave. >> reporter: they are hopeful there will be strength in numbers and others will stand by them in their fight. >> i think so.
