it is unprecedented and the warnings are already up. one week from tonight the golden gate bridge will close and stay closed through the weekend. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. at this time next week, work crews will be in the process of shutting down the golden gate bridge and it will stay closed for three nights. the reason, so that a movable barrier can be installed right down the middle of the bridge. the bridge is scheduled to close by midnight next friday night and it's not scheduled to reopen until 4:00 a.m. on monday morning. new at 10:00, debora villalon is at the bridge with exactly what's being done and which part of the bridge will stay

open, debora. >> reporter: frank, you will still be able to walk across the bridge. and the golden gate bridge district buses will still be running. but there won't be any regular traffic. which is bound to have a spill over effect. >> reporter: plastic tubes and a lot of luck are all that separates cars coming opposite directions on the golden gate bridge. of the 36 people killed in crashes since the 70s, about half were in head on wrecks. so now the landmark is getting a rare structural change. >> it's a great idea, you can't argue against it. inconvenience for two or three days it's not a big deal. if it saves lives it's a good thing. >> reporter: the barrier can be lifted, concrete and steel sections shifted to allow lanes to adapt to traffic flow. hundreds of sections are ready for installation. the zipper truck one on each side of the bridge are visible

now. >> with the richmond bridge which is problematic or take golden gate transit. or ride my bike. >> reporter: the richmond san rafael bridge carries about 68,000 vehicles both directions on both saturday and sunday. the golden gate about 80,000 so the more northernly bridge could become twice as crowded. >> now to the right side at the bottom. >> reporter: tourists are most likely to be blind sided by this shut down. guides are reassuring them they can still walk across and by diverting buses into the presidio still get their scenic shots. >> for those comeing in we let them know the bridge is closing but we will be able to fix the way they get some pictures. >> reporter: the movable barrier on doyle drive already seems to work without a hitch. >> they understand that they have to put these barriers up on the bridge. that's something that's relevantly necessary. and really needed. >> reporter: we're lucky, i'm happy that we got to see it

like right now. other wise, i mean, a huge disappointment. it's iconic, everywhere in the world identifies the golden gate bridge with san francisco. so it's like it's a great, i mean it's a must see. >> reporter: a few changes for marin drivers with the barrier, the speed limit is extending on to the bridge will be 45 not 55 and the lanes will merge from right to left which is the opposite of how it is now. so there are definite adjustments to be made frank. and this bridge which is already narrow will become 6- inches narrower. so be careful. you don't want to be the first person to sideswipe that new barrier. >> boy you sure don't. debora how does the bay bridge measure in all of this. >> reporter: the bay bridge is going to feel it. it's the only way if in and out of city to head north. it already handles 6,000 vehicles on the weekend. caltrans says it's not going to

through san francisco. soon it will be joined by 628. >> i knew 418 was splitting up but i didn't know 415 was. >> reporter: the california public utilities commission is running ads to let san francisco residents to know they will dial calls differently. you will need a new area code. >> what if i have a 415 area code and i'm dialing a 415. >> you will still need to dial one, plus the area code, plus the number. >> as long as there's no charges, i think it's fine. >> reporter: but he's concerned the change will not come without problems. >> for the older folks like my father there's going to be a lot of confusion for the older ones. >> reporter: this new area code will overlay the 415 area code. if you have a 415 area, you keep it. if you're a new customer you can be assigned this new area

code starting in march and these new dialing procedures they start on february 21st. >> so many numbers to remember. all right, ken pritchett in san francisco. ken, thank you. and at ktvu.com we have posted complete details about those changes and when they happen. just look for web links. we have new information on the deadly shooting of a security guard by san francisco police back in march. today the police department publicly released the names of the four officers who were involved in the deadly shooting which happened in bernal heights park. they are sergeant jason sawyer, officer roger morris, officer richard shift and officer nathan schu. the officers shot and killed alejandro nieto after he allegedly pointed a weapon at them. the judge has ordered that the

names of the officers be released as part of nieto's parents lawsuit. investigators say a transient identified as steven lee mason approached the victim and started a fight. mason allegedly kicked the man on the head with a hammer and gardening cheers. police say mason had been ordered to stay away from union plaza before. the exact motive for the attack is unclear. >> it just appears these two have cross wasn't intentional by the victim, the talk of the person, the suspect just went up to him and started talking and a fight ensued. >> reporter: mason is facing several charges including two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. the ride share service uber is facing yet another lawsuit. this time claims of spam texting. the federal lawsuit aims to become a -- a plaintiff says he received 19 texts in two months

encouraging him to sign up as a driver. today uber refused to comment on the lawsuit. for the first time, thousands of undocumented immigrants today legally applied for a california driver's license. statewide, 11,000 people submitted their applications today and more than 600 of them were in san jose. ktvu's ann rubin was at one of the processing centers and has more on the impact of this new law. >> reporter: julio perez calls this paper a blessing and honor. it shows you have the written driver's exam. >> i feel he reached a goal that it looks like unbelievable but now he can feel it and touch it. >> reporter: today marks the first day undocumented immigrants can apply for driver's licenses in california. and hundreds of people lined up at the dmv some showing up as early as 3:00 a.m. >> this will be very important for our family. >> we've been waiting for a long time for this.

>> reporter: the licenses are only good for driving in california and aren't good for boarding planes. but still those receiving them say the driver's licenses will change their lives. >> because you worry every single day of being stopped by a police. >> reporter: the dmv hired extra workers. >> we estimate 14.5 million new applicants. >> reporter: they've been doing outreach for months. >> many have not been out at a dmv office. so we spent a lot of time in the community to start getting their documents ready. >> reporter: but still, the new law meant long lines and not everybody supporting the new measure. >> it's not fair. you should follow the law of what an american citizen should have to do. >> reporter: for the perez family this means a chance to

addition of 45 new officers tonight. the graduation ceremony took place this evening at the scotish rite and masonic auditorium. this class is getting off on the right foot. >> on the first day i asked you why you wanted to be a san francisco police officer and you told me what i wanted to hear. you told me you wanted to help people. that is the only reason anybody should want to become a police officer. >> reporter: the chief said the new officers are especially welcomed at the ranks have been depleted for several years. the grads are diverse and well educated group. a third are from the military, and more than half are bilingual. a 36% pay increase that

the contra costa county council members approved for themselves is not going over well. the board chair says they deserve the increase. for months, contra costa county public employee unions have been trying to stop members of the board of council members from passing a pay raise. it seems this box of petitions may make that happen. >> the most we got was 4%. they stepped to the front of the line and give themselves a 33% rate. that's unfair. >> reporter: workers delivered signatures to the court clerk. that's more than 5,000 needed to stop the pay raise. >> it's unconsciousable for

them not to have the care for workers. we're all struggling here. >> this is the most unpleasant task we've had to face. >> reporter: the supervisors voted 4-1 to raise their salaries to just over $129,000 a year. that would have made them the fourth payest paid supervisors in the bay area. neither signatures must still be validated they forced the board to back pedal. >> we're not going to send it to the ballot. that's a waste of taxpayer dollars. >> reporter: in that case, the board would have to recind the decision. still, they say they deserve the increase. >> there's no concept of what this job entails. and the disrespect not in filing the petition, not in gathering the signatureses but in the comments made by county employees toward us on social

media has been outrageous. >> reporter: county workers say the board should get the same 4% increase most of them received not 33%. the supervisors likely will vote on recinding their pay the week after next and perhaps come up with another salary increase the rest of the county employees can live with. this afternoon harry reid's motorcade left a las vegas hospital where he had been under observation. he fell on new year's day while exercising and broke several bones. his communications director said reed returned to his home in henderson nevada but will return to washington this weekend. the president called the minority leader to wish him a quick recovery. the former head of hewlett packard who lost the race in

have temperatures easily down into the low 30s. the ridge of high pressure sends everything to the north. that means no rain for us for a few days at least. at least into the middle of next week. it means generally on a night like tonight clear skies and light winds. easily 31 in clear lake. 28 in san helena. hard freeze numbers that's where the freeze warnings are. 29 in walnut creek, 21 in danville. you will notice it tomorrow morning, a very cold morning just like this morning. look for some areas of dense patchy fog too. dewpoints are in a position where we could see not a bunch of it. not like widespread but just pockets of it down the low lying areas out by gernville. out by the low lying water sources. 38 in half-moon bay. the way it works out is temperatures are going to drop tonight in some of these valleys and you're going to get down to the dewpoint temperatures especially in the north bay. if you have travel plans especially north and east bay and out toward davis and the sacramento river. watch out for that stuff

some incredible developing news tonight out of kentucky where a 7-year-old girl walked away from a deadly plane crash. it happened near the border with illinois. four people were killed. the little girl was the only survivor. a near by homeowner called 911 after the girl actually walked up to her house and said she had been in a plane crash. police says she had nonlife threatening injuries. the plane was flying to illinois from key west florida when it went down. now to the latest on that plane crash in the java sea. two large objects have been found near each other at the bottom of the sea. earlier today a total of 21 bodies were found. that brings the total number that have now been recovered to 40. but the bodies of the 132 others on the plane are still missing. an american naval ship has pulled out more than half of the victims. the winds and heavy seas keep

moving. the debris and search area have been expanded. but they still have not found the plane an its black boxes. >> i can speak about the search, but as for for the fuselage or black box i cannot give you any information. >> they are in about 90 feet of water. the coast guard ordered the tahoe to stop operations in lake tahoe. but this is unrelated to a trouble they had on a new year's eve cruise. during that cruise, 200 passengers were stuck for two hours in bitter cold. it's not clear if the boat ran aground or was stalled by high winds. a friendly face in the city of napa is gone. what looked like a moose on the side of a tree is gone, it was

olive oil has become a staple in kitchens world wide but this year global supplies are expected to drop. jana katsuyama spoke to a major bay area distributor who says prices are already going up, jana. >> reporter: they are seeing that, and julie whether it is going to a specialty store to buy a bottle of olive oil from california or overseas people could see higher prices. >> then what you do is -- you slur --slurp it. >> reporter: there's a world of variety. from greenish to gold. imported or grown here in the golden state. >> i try to look for california olive oil. that's what i try to buy. >> reporter: but bradley says this year's drought has had a

big impact on california's olive oil supply. >> it's down 40 to 50%. >> reporter: while california makes less than 12%, other countries aren't doing much better. according to the world olive oil council, prices are expected to rise. italy's supply is estimated to be down 70%. spain down 40% due to bad weather and pests. >> a fruit fly can diminish. just a few olives can mess up the chemistry of your oil and make your oil bad. >> reporter: europe's november harvest saw the bradley's business paying seven to $8 more per gallon. about $42,000 more per truckload. that could trickle down from suppliers to consumers.

attack on sony pictures. the sanctions are mostly linked to north korea's missells and weapons bail. we explain what's behind them and what could be next. >> reporter: president obama signed an executive order today authorizing sanctions against north korea in retaliation for the cyber attack against sony pictures entertainment. >> the united states government has concluded the north korean government is responsible for this attack. >> reporter: it all stems behind the comedic the film "the interview." a cyber attack kept the movie from being released. sony then backtracked and released it. >> it was funny, silly comedy movie. >> reporter: the sanctions target several individuals who either work for arms dealers or the north korean government. liu released a statement that says these steps underscore that we will defend u.s.

businesses and citizens and respond to attempts to undermine our values or the united states. just earlier this week, north korean leader kim jung-un denounced the u.s. there's also speculation that north korean may have been scammed. and the hacking job may have been an inside attack. in honolulu, traveling with the president. the british royal family has taken the unusual step of addressing allegations that prince andrew had sex with a minor. buckingham palace has issued a flat denial. prince andrew's name was mentioned in a lawsuit against the disgraced american financier. the allegations say the incident happened more than 12 years ago and that the woman

dozens of cars and trucks collided on a freeway in new hampshire this morning after a sudden snow squall kicked up. one moment it was clear the next moment there were white out conditions. at least 45 vehicles crashed. nine people were injured one critical. police say some of the drivers were going over the 75-mile an hour speed limit when the accident happened. the accident was in northern new hampshire. in las vegas, a man got stuck on a zip line 80 feet up in the air. it happened on the slotzilla zip line that takes you over the strip. hundreds of people watched as fire crews arrived. the man was stuck for about an hour before the rescue crews

were finally able to bring him back down to solid ground. federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty for paul ciansia. he's pled not guilty. he's accused of opening fire. benardo fernandez was killed. he's the first tsa employee killed in the line of duty since the agency was formed after september 11th. the man who wanted to assassinate president reagan has -- brady died in august and a coroner determined he died from his long-standing brain injury. prosecutors considered drawing up murder charges but announced today the jury's finding of insanity still stands and bars the new charges. hinkley is a patient at a

psychiatric hospital in washington. in the south bay we now know the name of the suspect accused of setting a string of car fires over the holidays. since december 22nd, several cars were set on fire along the san jose campbell border. the santa clara county investigators says jason gallela is being held on three counts of arson. but investigators believe he maybe linked to as many as eight car fires in that location. the alameda county district attorney is reviewing one incident where an understand cover chp officer pointed his gun at protesters in oakland last month. the chp says its officers learned how to deal with hostile clouds through realistic role-playing. >> the difficult situation when rocks and bottles and things you're getting hit by that. but the idea that training is to be able to distinguish

in these inland bay valleys. you don't have to be freezing as you no to have frost form. it's about how cold the surface gets. winds shields tend to get very cold. frost will form on those winds shields. look for frost and look for freezing icy conditions throughout the bay area especially inland. so the way this shapes up is that cool air came in. it's going to shift. it's shifting as we speak. but it will completely shift by tomorrow. so it'll still be chilly but not as cold. and during the day this high pressure will take over. temperatures will warm. it's not the traditional warming trend, not tradition, it's not the warming trends we've seen in the past but we're going to go to 80. by sunday we could easily be in the low 60s. by monday and tuesday, maybe mid-60s. maybe upper 60s. that's the dry climate we're going to be. as we head into sundays, clouds increase, this will warm up the overnight lows for sunday morning and monday morning, rain stays north. but watch what happens in the
