in emergency recognized what to do, and shocked his heart back into a normal rhythm with this life saving machine. basketball is a quick game, and it was quick thinking that saved his life. one of the players stopped running staggered, and fell. >> he started having a hard time breathing. >> reporter: they quickly determined he was in cardiac arrest. they started cpr and asked for a lifeline. >> i ran out here and they threw it to me, iran back in, opened it up, and it was a live saver. >> bring it up, pushes the button. >> call for help now. >> reporter: the aed shocked

the teen's heart back into a regular rhythm emergency workers were on the scene within minutes, and took him to the medical center where he was under observation at last report. >> >. you see this nice kid with a bride future, and the -- bright future, and the aed saved his life. >> reporter: the program coordinator for the city of walnut creek who runs this facilities and he said over the years he's made it his mission to get as many of these devices as possible in case of situations like today. >> if you don't have one, get one. >> reporter: this device has half the battery charged, and they're getting a new battery, but this is the second time this device was used to save a life. it was a 55-year-old man last

families with kids. >> sloshing scalding water up the stairs and bathe children, it's a safety hazard. >> we apologize for this act of nature out of our control. >> reporter: a letter from the complex owner explains they tried to put in a terrae gas line. >> but the -- temporary gas line. >> but the city said no, they had the reinspect the gas line and they can't do it until next week. almost a full week without hot water. >> they say they're doing their best, however as you can see we're still waiting. >> reporter: without hot running water for laundry, dishes or hygiene, residents say this isn't just about comfort but sanitation. our calls to the resident manager and property owner went straight to answering service, and we have not gotten any call backs yet.

thanks very much. new at 10:00, police in san jose need your help to find a 74-year-old man that disappeared today. he was last seen 10:30 this morning walking away from a jack in the box. he has dimentia. he's five-six, 175 pounds, brown hair and brown eyes, blue jeans, gold necklace, and cap. a suspected drunk driver in oakland hit a pedestrian tonight causing severe injuries on holly street near 82nd avenue. the victim was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. the driver was arrested. no names has been released. the second of two funerals for the slain new york police officers takes place tomorrow. today there was a me tory, and

the -- memorial, and the atmosphere was respectful. >> reporter: while mourning the loss of his own father mario, the governor was there today. >> there is a hole in my heart i fear will be there forever, but today is about the lu family. >> reporter: the governor saying the murders of lu and his partner two weeks ago are an opportunity to calm rising tensions between community and police. >> the garner family went through pain, the ramos and lu families are going through pain, but it's time to move on, and heal. >> reporter: healing, moving on, a message shared by the mayor and police commissioner. as they entered the funeral home together, officers saluted, a gesture of respect.

planted the two bombs. 264 people were hurt, and three people were killed. if convicted he could face the death penalty. a kentucky man said he was watching the news when he heard a faint knock at the door, and he was shocked to find a small girl bloody and scared to death. she was the sole survivor of the plan crash that took the lives of her mother, father, sister, and cousin. >> reporter: she's out of the hospital after surviving a small plane crash friday night in a rural part of western kentucky. the plane was flying to illinois from florida when it went down, somehow the 7-year- old managed to walk away from the wreckage, walked about a

mile through the dark roads barefoot. >> she said mom and dead are dead, we had a plane crash, and the plane's upside down. >> reporter: he called 911 and tried to clean her up before the police arrived. >> she's a brave little girl. aisle praying -- i'm praying for her. she lost everything. >> reporter: the pilot reported enjoin trouble, and lost contact with controllers. first responders saying the crash hits close to home. >> i have an 8-year-old child myself. when i saw this little child that had walked through this dense forest and survived this, it's just really a miracle. >> reporter: the girl's parents lived in nashville, illinois, a suburb of st. louis.

one last chance to say good bye to a bay area oyster farm, and they hosted a party today to thanks customers and remember the good times. >> reporter: hundreds of people came together to say good bye to an institution. >> a lot of people are going to miss it. >> the oyster company has been in business for more than 80 years, until the park service ordered them to close to protect the surrounding environment. >> the oyster farm is beloved and loved by this community for generations. it was here half a century before this was a national seashore. >> reporter: they closed the canning operations last summer, and the final oysters were

now that the business is closed. the shell fish could pose a health threat because there's no agency monitoring the fish. people from the company say it's likely unnecessary because the water company is excellent. the cold weather that swept over california is cause for concern for farmers. below freezing temperatures can cause considerable damage to crops, and effect animals as well. at a trail riding business in ojai, a guide described how they keep horses from getting chilled. >> it's a blanket fitted to the horse, and strapped underneath. >> for the most part growers say crops are in good shape. new details now about the air asia flight that crashed killing 162 people.

we learned it didn't have permission to fly in the first place. search teams found more bodies, and four large pieces of the plane today. >> reporter: each day more bodies are being recovered. there is now a daily funeral procession as the victims are flown ashore before being taken to a hospital for identification. the search teams have now located large parts of the wreckage at the bottom of the sea. but bad weathers continues to hamper the operation, it's peak monsoon season, and heavy rains is whipping through the crash sites. >> we should be able to issue the preliminary report in one month's time, and then from that on we continue to do the investigations and analysis,

and the final report we should be able to issue the final report in one year's time. >> reporter: we know flight 8501 took off in i understand nearby i can't bound for -- indonesia bound for singapore. but now they're saying it didn't have a permit to fly that day. at 32,000 feet air traffic control reported the plane missing. officials say contact was lost, it didn't send a distress signal. we know the pilot made a request to deviate from the flight path to avoid bad weather, but it was refused because of heavy air traffic. this is the search area, large pieces of wreckage have now been found. >> >. it does look fairly probable the severe weather was

an east bay family is starting the new year in the worst way possible, their home is gone after their christmas tree went up in flames. the woman said two of her three children were home with the six- year-old smelled
