have much of a chance expect for a few high clouds, patchy fog and warmer. hazy jet stream continues to be well to the north, not visiting us that's going to stay that way. a little cool down on sunday warmer today, 60s and tomorrow it will be a few upper 60s to near 70s. we are looking at a commute that's actually off to a decent start if you are driving off the freeway. doesn't look too bad as you drive from the bridge to the mcarthur maze, but things are looking a lot more like they did before the holidays began. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, there is a backup there of about 20 minutes before you make it on to the bridge. if you're driving this morning into livermore valley, we already have some slow traffic on 580, but leaving the valley heading back to the south bay. it is slow as you approach after 84, there was a little bit of an issue, and traffic is a little bit slow in that area.

at 6:02. let's go back to the desk. san francisco police are investigating after a man was shot after they had contact with him earlier in the day. we are joined with more on both of the encounters and the events that led up to the shooting. >> this all unfolded in the police parking lot here in the mission district. we've seen officers coming into work all morning long, but the 3 who are involved in the shooting won't be coming in today. they are on administrative leave which is standard. these officers were leaving yesterday evening at 5:20 when they noticed a man standing in the parking lot which is restricted to the public. the police chief says the officers asked the man to leave and he started to walk away but offices say when they looked again, he was still in the drive way. >> they found this curious, they exited the car. went to approach him to tell him again hey you can't be here. and he went to his waste band

where there was a gun and drew the weapons, 2 sergeants fired the suspect was hit 3 times. the 32-year-old man under went surgery, but died at the hospital. it turned out the weapon he had was an air soft pellet gun. a spokesman says they do not know why the man was there but they say earlier in the day he approached officers asking them what kind of weapons they carry. investigators plan to look for video evidence as well as other witnesses, the chief says he also plans to hold a customary town hall meeting to review the whole situation, also to show thereplica. back to you. that will be interesting to see, thank you. jury selection getting underway this morning in the trial of accused boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. you can see the media and

people milling around outside, prosecutors say him and his older brother planted 2 bombs at the marathon in april of 2013 killing 3 people injuring 264 others. he has pleaded not. there are about 1200 possible jurors who have been some summoned so this may take several weeks. victims are also expected to testify. >> several people will be testifying so i want to be there to support them. it's been changing me since it happened and i expect that it will continue to do that. >> now there are reports this morning that talks of a possible plea deal hit a snag after federal prosecutors refused to take the death penalty off the table. prosecutors say this trial could last up to 4 months. just a few hour, a stormassistance center will help hundreds of people

affected by last month's storm. this trailer park was hit very hard, people cleaning up weeks later. the damages arest dated in the thousands of dollars. >> tiresome, you know, all the time. it doesn't get any better. it is really hard what's happened to us. but it is what it is. the flooding was caused when a canal over flowed behind the mobile home park. the city is now looking into how to fix the problem and the center is at the parking garage at 329 miller avenue in san francisco. some students will be in different classrooms today as the school repairs flood damage that happened over the holidays. a water main ruptured flooding parts of the school with up to 2 feet of water, floors, walls, books and other parts of 6 classrooms were damaged. engineers are still trying to figure out what caused the line to break. $4 million have been set aside by the school board to pay for

repairing the 15-year-old building. 6:06. today is inauguration day here in california while many call it a day of hope, the candidates, they have a lot to deal with once they are sworn in. brian flores in our newsroom. this is a historic day for the governor as well. certainly is. governor brown will be sworn in for an unprecedented fourth term. he served his first 2 terms years ago, certainly the governor had a lot of his plate. his inauguration was held at the auditorium. he is combining duties as he'll take oath of office and deliver the state address. the governor is expected to push for his pet project, which is california's high speed rail. but at the same time, calling on lawmakers to exercise restraint and spending despite california's newfounded $2 billion surplus. >> when the governor took office we had a deficit.

unemployment over 12%. worst credit rating in the nation. and since then added 1.3 million jobs, unemployment rate is dropped to 7.2%. in the meantime, attorney general harris will also be sworn in today for her final 4 years in office. harris will announce today that she is creating a bureau within the state department of justice that will focus on crimes against children. the bureau will focus on issues such as deterring school truancy and tackling issues like bullying and also what harris calls the tragically flawed foster care and adoptive systems. and a ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 this afternoon at the paramount theater. she was born and raised in oakland and was the city council woman for the fourth district. she'll be the 50th mayor and she'll join us live coming up on mornings on 2. don't want to miss that. okay we'll talk to you later. 6:08. will social media help the chp

track down a man that fell off a cliff yesterday afternoon? the highway patrol says a man and his son were hiking when the father fell off the cliff. the son called 911, but the phone's gps coordinates couldn't pinpoint where they were exactly. the dispatcher went on facebook. he found a post where they identified where the 2 would be hiking. cht helicopters were able to find and rescue the boy and his father. the father still in the hospital with serious injuries. and informational meeting being held about the implosion of candlestick park. a developer says implosion would be a fast and inexpensive way to demolish the old ballpark. people who live in the area are concerned about possible health issues. there is a change.org petition to refuse a permit to the developers and that petition has more than 120 signatures.

. good morning, welcome back. police say a baby girl has now been found dead. the 3 week old was found yesterday in the strip mall dumpster in san diego county. police say someone kidnapped the baby after shooting her parents and her uncle saturday night at a home in long beach. no arrests have been made. but investigators believe the kidnapper knew the family. they report the baby's mother

and uncle are in critical condition and that the baby's father has been treated and been released. president obama is back in washington d.c. following the 2 week vacation, but he'll not stay put for long. the president is scheduled to hit the road on wednesday for a trip to michigan, arizona and tennessee. they say he looks forward to looking for the republican- controlled congress but said he'll not let congress undo protection particularly in the areas of health care, wall street reform and the environment. speaking of congress, they do get back to work with 58 new lawmakers in the white house, 15 new senators, the republicans now have majorities in both the house and the senate. senator mitch mcconnell becomes the new senate majority leader, he has vowed the hold a vote on the keystone oil pipeline andwants to roll back the health care law and environmental policy. 6:14. in oklahoma, there is a proposal to ban wearing a

hoodie in public. there's already a law making it illegal to cover up your face while committing a crime. they want to make it illegal to hide your identity in any public place. civil liberty folks say this violates civil rights. i don't think that solution would work. i just think that that will cause a little bit more tension within the community. >> now the proposed amendment would provide exceptions to the rule including for religious readings or protection from the weather. a generous diner who has been leaving big tips at restaurants is back here in the bay area. the mystery diner left a $2,000

good morning everybody. we have kind of hazy skies out there, a few high clouds will break through the ridge of high pressure. the lows i know there's cold. still in the 30s but not in the 20s each day they are coming up a little bit and so will the high temps just, ridge of high pressure. i think i'll come back and visit california and sending everything well to the north, patchy fog, few high clouds, cool, cold. hazy sun, a little bit warmer here on these afternoon temps. and san jose. 38. livermore at 39. 36napa. upper 40s to near 50. up 1600, 2,000 feet that's the warm layer. you go up in height, temperatures decrease. and it starts to warm up that creates an inversion. you get the haze, 30s on the temps. mid-to upper. a little component of an easternly breeze for half-moon

bay. not much of a breeze except in the hills. everything is trying to break through, but it looks like it is going to run into tremendous resistance in the form of high pressure and probably not too much at all for us this week except give us cooler weather but not until about thursday or friday. it is cold. i mean, it is really cold here all the way down into dallas and little rock you can see temps, this is a pattern we saw about last year at this time as well on the northeast, southeast, a lot of cloud cover, presip, cold pattern dropping down cold air and associated snow. for us expect for the high clouds and hazy skies very quiet here. 50s, san diego looking for a high of 74 today. partly cloudy skies here t higher clouds from sunday which gave us a little bit of rain is giving way to clear skies patchy fog, a cold morning but not as cold and temperatures start to rebound, tuesday maybe all the bay into wednesday, the

could be moving back to california. that's according to los angeles times. reportedly this would be part of a development that includes the forum as well as office retail, hotel and residential space. the raiders and chargers expressed interest in moving to the los angeles area any move would need approval from 3- quarters of the owners. this next story about this man devastated me when i heard it. people all over the country mourning the death of a beloved espned sports anchor, stuart scott. he died at 49 years old after a long battle of cancer. stuart scott was well known for his personality and catchphrase, booyah. in 2007 he began a long public battle with cancer. last year he was honored with his fight against cancer and

talked about not letting cancer when you defeat him. >> when you die, it does not mean you lose to cancer. you beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live. >> he was just an incredible man, a dad, a colleague, chemotherapy and radiation treatments kept him off the air at espn off and on through the years as he battled cancer. he leaves behind his parents, his 3 siblings and 2 beautiful daughters. there were moments of silence at sports events yesterday in honor of stuart scott including like this, including the wild card games and several college basketball games many bigsports names also on twitter and other social media showing their sadness. the dallas cowboys moving on in the nfl play offs after a come back win and a

the mcarthur maze. now we're beginning to see slow traffic on the east shore on 80 between the bridge and mcarthur maze you can see it is about a 22 minute delay. still not too bad getting higher and higher definitely we're getting backup to the levels before holiday conditions. let's go back to the desk. san francisco police chief plans to hold a town hall meeting after a deadly police shooting yesterday. it happened in the police department parking lot after officers say they were threatened with what appeared to be and what turned out to be a replica gun. ktvu has more on the incident plus the details ofan encounter of that same man earlier yesterday. >> yes i'll talk about that in a little bit. but police say that the gun that the man had it turned out to be an air soft pellet gun but the chief says the officers, it appeared to look like a realistic handgun.

it did not have an orange tip which would indicate it was fake. this encounter took place at just at 5:30 as 3 officers were leaving the mission station yesterday evening. they spotted a man standing in the parking lot which is clearly marked for police only. the officers told the man to leave. he walked away so did the officers. when they got close to the gate the man was still there. the chief says the man then drew a gun from his waste band to the sergeants, grabbed their weapons, open fire hitting him 3 times. he later died at the hospital. the chief explained how the incident highlights the dangers they can face. >> this is a job where we lose officers in fact we just lost 2 in fact today was the day that officer liu was laid to rest in new york city. it is all on our minds but how heavy our hearts are, we have a job to do so we're going to do it. police have not released the man's identity because described him as a 32-year-old white man.

police don't know why the man was there but say earlier in the day he approached officers near by asking what kind of weapons and ammunition they carry. also asking them if they'd ever been involved in officer- involved shooting. the officers involved are now on leave which is standard procedure. investigators plan to look for witness, they'll hold a meeting to show what the gun looked like. we'll talk to you later. our time is now 6:35. we have more information coming in now about the valejo search for a suspect considered armed and dangerous. now identified as 21-year-old stacy hawthorne. he was involved in a fight at a motel 6 and ran into his hotel room to get a gun. when officers approached him police say he ran off with a gun stole a car and tried to run over a police officer.

police say he crashed a car through a locked gate and ran away. this was his photo, if you've seen him or recognize him call the police. and a car crash happennened at 6:15 yesterday, at least 3 different cars collided there is no word yet on what actually caused the crash. one person died at the scene another died at the hospital. the other 5 people were taken to the hospital with minor to major injuries. all lanes were closed for almost 4 hours. time 6:36. big changes are coming to the golden gate bridge, that is going to mean closing to bridge to almost everybody. it is scheduled to be shut down at midnight saturday until 4 a.m. monday as crews install a movable median barrier. right now only small plastic pile-ons separate the traffic. they are going to be replaced

by 3300 concrete units that can be moved with what are being called yellow zipper trucks. >> it is going to be inconvenient this weekend, we understand that. we considered whether or not we should spread the work to the course of a several weeks, but we decided to rip off the band- aid and do it in one swoop. they are increasing ferry service during this weekend. if you're walking or on a bike you can use the east sidewalk, but all parking lots including the one at vista point will be closed. if you haven't already done it, it is time to take down your christmas tree. but if you ever wondered where they go after they are left out at the curb, ktvu joins us live from san francisco to show us what happens next to the trees.

tara? >> reporter: first i have to tell you, it smells fantastic out here. i am absolutely loving this assignment. if you take a look behind me. you can see there is a huge, huge pile of trees ready to be recycled. the trees will be put in chippers and ground up and last year there were 523-tons of christmas trees. you might think the chips being ended up used for compost or ground cover, they send the trees to tracy, where they will generate electricity. >> it is difficult to compost christmas trees. they have natural properties that resist composting. but they are very good as a bio fuel. it is a great resource and particularly when it is mixed together with other chipped-up pieces of lumber. now through the 16th he says leave your tree out at the curb

. welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. thousands of police offices filled the streets of brooklyn to honor the police officer, wenjian liu. he and his partner were shot and killed while sitting in their patrol car last month. liu's bride of just 2 months, talked about a man who said was devoted to the care and safety of others. >> he will always live in our hearts. we love you. i loved you, forever loved you. politicians and top police officers attended the funeral, new york police commissioner william told the crowd of mourners that officer liu always wanted to be a police officer. for 7 years he sought out the suffering, the disturbed, the injured and tried to bring

them comfort. >> as they did at the funeral for officer ramos, some police officers watching from outside actually turned their backs to the screen when mayor bill deblasio spoke. many police offices blamed the mayor for creating a hostile environment for his support of antipolice protesters. police officers flew to new york to pay respects of one of their own. their deaths were a shock, really hit close to home. area police officers gathered another the brooklyn funeral home to pay their respects. >> law enforcement, we're one big family. even though i didn't know officer liu or officer ramos, their lives still touched me personally. the officer says with the help of officers from all over the country, the officers in new york seem to be slowly recovering from this tragedy. a huge chunk of the u.s. is bracing for very cold weather.

killed little girl's parents, her sister, and hercousin. they are headed home to illinois from florida when the plane started to have engine problems. the pilot tried to reach the nearest airport but crashed less than 10-miles from that airport. the girl was still strapped in her seat. she was able to get herself out and then walk through these woods to find help. investigators are hoping the young girl will give them clues as to what may have caused the plane to crash. improving weather in indonesia allowing search and rescue crews to help uncover air asia flight. 5 ships are in the area to help find the black box. 162 people were on the plane, dozens of bodies are already recovered. the transportation ministry cracking down on everyone who allowed the airasia flight to take off possibly without proper permits. the airport's operator has been suspended along with control
