although there's enough of a breeze here kind of stirring things up a bit, if you have wind chimes, maybe it sounds nice. i don't know. for some breezy, but by the coast it looks really warm, 30s, 40s and 50s at the surface. in shall still cold readings -- there are still cold readings, but 1,700 warm there. petaluma36. windsor 36 and lakeport says 48. 65 to 67, again, this is not in las gat tos to the santa cruz mountains, 67 degrees. yeah, 37 in gilroy, so there's a big difference, but everybody at the end of the day will have lots of sunshine and warm temps. i just want to show this real quick, how brutally cold it is for almost the entire country, all the way down, frost and freeze warnings in the gulf coast tonight. it'll be 20s in the florida panhandle and new york city will be around 6 degrees tonight, coldest in about a year. 25 up in ta who, 30s for -- ta

hoe. look for sunny and near 60 and 70 degrees. sal. >>reporter: sounds good. the traffic is just moderate, steve. we're getting a little bit of slowing now as we get into the 6:00 hour. you can see it for yourself at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic continues to look very good. also we're looking here at 880 north and southbound, traffic also continuing to move along very nicely as you drive through. 85 and 280 in the south bay, we have a nice looking drive there. there are no major problems on northbound 101, the traffic is a little bit slow, though, on northbound 101 before 280. i just want to throw in that southbound 101 through petaluma if you're listening in the north bay, there was a little bit of oo crash or a little bit of a problem that's been moved over. all you need to know is a little bit more time is needed on the southbound 101 commute. investigators are looking into a deadly crash in pacifica. we told you about it earlier. ktvu's tara moriarty is on that section of skyline

boulevard known for being pretty dangerous. tara. >>reporter: yeah, that's right, especially when it gets foggy. fortunately it's not too foggy right now. but pacifica police have confirmed that at least one person is dead. we are standing here on highway 35 where skyline -- or skyline boulevard, if you live in the area, where it is blocked off in both directions from king drive all the way down to manor. we're right on the border of daly city and pacifica. police are not leght us get too close to the car. you'll notice it's a white car and locate around all the emergency vehicles. we don't know where the car crash was, initially hit by a vehicle or soliest spinout, hitting a wall or something. we saw the fire trucks leaving as we pulled in and we heard reports that the vehicle was on fire at one stage. if you live in this area and you need to head north, you can take westboro to 280 or callen boulevard or if you're headed southbound, just take king to 280 or king and wind through the sigh streets. we have reached out to pacifica police, but have not heard back yet. we'll let you know what they --

let you know what they have to say. we'll keep you posted. live from pacifica, i'm tara mor iz arty where it is very cold. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, tara. 6:03 is the time. we continue to monitor the developing news of a terror attack in france. the french government has raised the alert level to the highest after two armed gunmen stormed the offices of the satirical magazine charlie hebdo. now, paris police say 12 people were killed, including two police officers and the magazine's editor and cartoonist. the gunmen who escaped are describe as commandos. world leaders including president obama are condemning the attack. and coming up at 6 30, our own brian flores will show you the frightening moments captured on people's cell phones. bart police are investigating a shooting last night in the parking lot of the bayfair bart station in san leandro. police say a man in his 20s was shot on the west parking lot on hispeerian boulevard just after

10:00 last night. there were reports of up to three shots being fired. the victim was hit in the chest. he was rushed to the hospital, but we understand he's in stable condition at this point. police have not released any information on the suspect in this shooting. time is now 6:04. it's been almost five months since that devastating earthquake in napa, and hundreds of people are still fighting to get their belongings out of a badly damaged storage unit. ktvu's alex savidge joining us live now to explain how these tenants have been put in a really tough spot. good morning, alex. >>reporter: dave, good morning to you. a very difficult situation. people's personal items are trapped inside this napa storage facility because the place was red tagged following the 6.0 earthquake here back in august. no one has been allowed inside this building. and now a number of the people who rent units here, they're being asked to help foot the bill to recover their own belongings, and it will be an expensive process. according to a report in the napa valley register, the owners of napa self storage say it'll cost about $200,000 to

safely shore up the building and remove what's inside. each tenant is being asked to pay the equivalent of a year's rent, as much as $2,200 an the owners say if if not enough tenants decide to contribute, at least 70% of them, then the building here on walnut street will be demolished with all of the contents still inside. as you can imagine, a number of people who rent units here are frustrated and angry over this plan. many people call it extortion. one tenant, in fact, told the register "it's not our responsibility to make her building safe. we should not have to buy our own things out of there." now on top of that there's also this to keep in mind. there's no guarantee that people's possessions will even be salvageable once they're pulled out of this building. so now city leaders are stepping in to try and resolve this dispute. they do have the final say on demolition and some councilmembers are opposed to that idea. next week city leaders will be sitting down with both tenants and the owners of this storage facility to try and hash out a

plan here. >> very interesting. all right, alex, thanks a lot. time now 6:06. police busted a marijuana grow in an upscale neighborhood of san ramone. police made the discovery yesterday inside a home on henry lane. a hazmat team was called out because police were worried that butane canisters used to process the marijuana might explode. now, police arrested the 31- year-old man who lived there with his parents. they say he was operating a sophisticated drug lab in an in- law unit in the garage. that man is being held at the martinez jail without bail because of a probation violation. the golden gate bridge district says drivers will see several changes after a new moveable median barrier is installed this weekend. now, as we've been telling you, the installation means the golden gate bridge will be closed starting just before midnight friday night. yellow zipper trucks are already there. they will be used to move the concrete and steel barrier. drivers heading south from marin are going to notice a difference. they're going to see that the

lanes will now merge from right to left instead of left to right as they do now. now, of course, this long- awaited barrier is designed to prevent head-on collisions. we spoke with one driver who experienced just such a crash. brian garrettson was driving northbound from the airport to his home in salsilito in 2008 when a driver traveling south on the bridge crossed over the center line. we showed him the footage of the aftermath taken from news chopper 2 which he had never seen before. >> everyday i see distracted drivers on that bridge in that center lane and i cringe for what will ultimately happen again. so i'm a huge advocate of this barrier going up. >> it's been a long time in the making. the bridge is scheduled to reopen on monday morning at 4:00 a.m. unless work crews finish ahead of schedule. all right, pam, time 6:08. we have new video to show you this morning from indonesia. the search teams have spotted the tail section of air asia flight 8501. take a look at these photos released by the indonesiaian

government. you can see the wreckage at the bottom of the java sea. and this is really important in finding out why the plane crashed more than a week ago with 162 people on board because the plane's black boxes and flight recorders, they're in the tail section. search teams also recovered another body. now 40 bodies have been found so far from that plane crash. right now it's 6:09. we are learning new details about the man killed by san francisco police over the weekend. coming up at 6:30, the disturbing text messages he sent to a police officer in another state nearly a year ago. but, first, skydivers forced to evacuate their troubled plane. what happened moments after they jumped out of that plane. >>reporter: and as we look at bay area bridges, so far so good as you approach san mateo bridge looks good to the peninsula. we'll tell you a little bit more about the commute, especially trying to get across these bay area bridges. if you have any travel plans to chicago tomorrow morning, the wind chill will be

firefighters got there. we're also seeing reports of several power lines down in the area. our ktvu crew is there. they tell us it appears the house is abandoned. we'll bring you more details as we get it in. in the meantime all 13 people who were on a skydiving plane in new zealand survived after the plane had engine failure right over a lake today. it happened over a lake topo south of auckland on new zealand's north island. the plane was filled with skydivers, a crew and a pilot and started to stall over the lake. since everyone on board had parachutes, they were able to jump out of the plane right into the water. seconds later the plane burst into flames. >> i saw the parachuters jumping out and then heard a big bang, like it flew up before it hit the water. >> all 13 people on board, including the pilot got out of that plane safely and there are

no major injuries. people across the midwest are grabbing their scarves, gloves and hats this morning because of dangerously cold winter temperatures. this morning the temperatures dropped into the single digits in chicago, a wind chill advisory has been issued for much of the northeast through tomorrow. and there's a warning that the dangerously cold air along with the strong winds could result in frostbite. it's too cold to 2 to school. the extremely cold weather has prompted officials to cancel classes in more than 125 chicago-area school districts. they say it is the best interest -- in the best interest of students because of health and safety concerns. our time is 6:14. a bay area woman is warning about privacy pols she's had -- problems she's had since she started asking questions about covered california and the health insurance exchange. 26-year-old danielle gasaw says the problem started when she started the signup process. she included her phone number with her online information, but she never gave permission for that number to be shared

with anyone. she later decided she wasn't interested in the health exchange but says she received dozens of calls from insurance companies all over the country. a company in ohio told her how it got her number. >> i asked them if they could take me off their list, and they said they can take me off of their list, but covered california had already sold my phone number to a bunch of different insurance companies. >> well, a spokesperson for the insurance exchange says it did share some information from thousands of consumers who never finished signing up. however, covered california is insisting it does not violate privacy laws. senate democratic leader harry reid is using twitter to speak out about the freak accident that kept him from being at the opening of the new congress. >> i didn't go bull riding, i wasn't riding a motorcycle, i was exercising in my new home, and the doctors have told me i better take it easy.

>> now, the senate minority leader who was also once a boxer joked that he didn't get the black eye in the ring. actually, an exercise band he was using during a workout broke, knocked him across the room last week and he broke several bones in his face and three ribs. >> wow! time is 6:15. this year's baseball hall of fame class, it is the biggest since 1955. four baseball greats will be inducted into cooperstown this summer. houston astros 2nd baseman craig bingo got in on his first try. this is the first year three pitchers have gone in. pedro martinez, john smoltz and randy johnson, all first ballot hall of famers. johnson finished his career as a san francisco giant in 2009. the induction ceremony is set for july 26th. boxing legend mohammed ali resting at home this morning. he's been released from the hospital. ali had a severe urine tract infection. according to a family

spokesman, ali, as you know, also suffering from parkinson's disease. he was hospitalized three weeks ago. the spokesman says ali, who, by the way, turns 73 years old this month, has fully recovered from that infection. 6:16 is the time. let's check back in with sal for a look at the commute. there are several problems around the bay area. >>reporter: yeah. i just found out here oakland fire department has been dispatched to apparently a big rig that's on fire, oak street at 880 which is just a few blocks from jack lunden square and could be a problem for downtown oakland drivers. so we're going to figure that out. and the fire department is on the way, chp is aware of it. let's go out and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. you can see traffic is moving along okay. there are no major problems. the traffic does look good as you drive through. there is an accident eastbound 24 just before the cal decut tunnel. that one came in, paramedics to that one. 880 northbound and southbound

is looking good here, 880 southbound in oakland, the traffic is moving along relatively well. all of a sudden my radio started going crazy. we got a lot of crashes coming in right at the moment. northbound 101 traffic looks good as you come up to the 880 interchange and the south bay commute is generally okay. at 6:17, steve, it's getting busy in the traffic, it's a little chilly outside. >> sal, have any of those caught your attention that you heard, or just too fast? >>reporter: well, they just dispatched another fire crew out to this oak street thing, steve, so i'm going to go figure it out and i'll have it by the next report. >> thank you, sir. it is chilly cold for some, yet i was just looking in the santa cruz mountains, scotts valley 1,20067 degrees, 400 feet it's around 31 degrees. that's called an inversion, and, boy, i'll tell ya, that's warm air aloft and trapping everything below. there's also a due east wind right above the cal de cut at 30 miles an hour, but for some

most it's calm. sunny and warm today, lots of sunshine, continued nice. not as warm on thursday and then we'll get some clouds in here friday into the weekend. spare the air day today. if you get that breeze, then the air quality is okay. if it's kind of stagnant underneath that, it can be unhealthy for some. we do have clear skies and you can see why. i mean, when you see a bow or a bend in that, that's a sure sign that says high pressure says you're not moving in this direction, my friend. 30s, 40s and 50s. 50 now half moon bay, gettings a little bit of a breeze there. that brings that temperature up. 30s for palo alto, menlo park and woodside, yet la honda is 57 degrees. foster city 38. other locations are in the 40s. so 30s, 40s and 50s. due east at the napa airport, due east at fairfield, there's your offshore breeze, and, again, higher elevations. if you're in the city, outer richmond, inner richmond, kristy, i know you always report very good information there, but lee anne, if you're getting a breeze like this, let me know, because yesterday we had something similar. other locations it's not that bad, but for a few areas, some neighborhoods, it'll be down

about that? >> that's incredible. >> i know. >> and it's already 68. >> that's higher elevations, santa cruz mountains. i've seen 60s to 30s in the santa cruz mountains in the same town. >> that should be pretty darned chilly right now. >> what? >> that's above. if you're above it could be 68, if you're at 200 feet, it's about 31. >> in the shade. >> yes. >> all right, steve. 6:21 is the time right now. minnesota driver who went to prison for a crash that killed three people will be back in court today. this time koo funning lee is suing toyota. he was driving a toyota camry and told investigators the car suddenly accelerated and that caused the crash. now, he spent 2 1/2 years in prison. he was freed after a series of reports of toyota's mysteriously surging. more than 10 million vehicle wrs recalled for the problem, but that did not include the car that lee was driving. the nation's trade deficit shrank sharply. the trade gap was $39 billion mainly because of cheaper oil

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:24. bill cosby still in the middle of a scandal returns to the stage tonight. this week the 77-year-old comedian has three shows in canada. the performances follow sexual assault allegations by more than 15 women and at least 10 subsequent performance cancellationations on his tour. now, his reception tonight is expected to be mixed with some planning protests, others vowing to show up as a sign of support. 6:25. there's a new report out that says drinking alcohol kills six americans everyday or more than 2,000 each year and according to this new report from the centers for disease control, binge drinking accounts for most of the alcohol-related deaths. and it may surprise you to know

that most of those cases don't involve college-aged adults. a group that often are linked to binge drinking. it's actually middle-aged men most at risk, meaning those between the ages of 35 and 64. >> you don't have tolerance when you're not drinking everyday. you're not realizing how much you can drink. >> you can drink quite a bit before you actually feel drunk so to speak, and by that point it's too late. >> now, the experts say a binge, well, that's defined as five drinks for a man, four for a woman within two hours. binge drinking can affect the heart rate and your body temperature as well as cause severe dehydration and even alcohol poisoning. the department of motor vehicles released new numbers about the number of applications for driver's licenses by undocumented immigrants. between friday and monday more than 46,000 people applied for licenses under the new state law. 54% who took the test in english passed on the first day. 36% passed the spanish test.

>> all >> that's enough. thank you. the full moon was monday, but still looks very bright here in the sky under clear skies. there are temperatures that go from the 30s to the 60s, just depends on your elevation. at the surface, 30s, 40s, 50s. it'll be sunny today, nice. breezy for some. up in oakland hills and the berkeley hills, down right windy for a few. but, again, it's isolated. when you get to the surface, it's calm for most locations, not for all. it'll be sunny for everybody today, mild to warm. 30s, 40s and 50s. 54 half moon bay, other areas in the 30s. higher elevations, though, are really warm, i mean, you get up about 1,200 feet to 1,800 feet, mid- to upper 60s at the surface, yet you can find lots of 30s. alamo, danville, san ramone, lots of 30s near pittsburg. easterly breeze in fairfield. there's a very strong breeze about 30 miles an hour due east and in a few locations in san francisco. that all equals a beautiful day. sunny and warm, windy for some, near 70.

parts of the coast, santa cruz, also santa clarita valley i think on the peninsula as well, 60s as well. it's nice, sunny, warm. all of a sudden things just got crazy, right, sal? >>reporter: yeah. we do have some problems out there, steve, and that's because there are more people on the road and that's usually core lated with more collisions. let's go out and take a look, first of all we have the bay bridge toll plaza and you will see that traffic is actually doing okay if you are just a regular commuter. you're used to seeing this kind of slow traffic. so nothing out of the ordinary here. it's about a 15-minute delay at the bay bridge toll plaza and there have been no major problems. i also want to mention that traffic is going to be okay on oakland's 880 freeway. southbound 880 near downtown oakland right near the oak street on ramp there was a big rig that was on fire. oakland fire department got there and there is a little bit of a backup on 880 south passing the scene. it's not major, but there is one. let's go to the maps. i also want to show you eastbound 24 right before the cal de cot, there's an injury crash there. fortunately the westbound

direction, most people are going westbound at this time, it's not affected by this crash. 6:32. let's go back to the desk. actually, we're going to toss it to tara on this crash in pacifica, a deadly crash. and tara is on highway 35. tara, that little section of skyline is pretty dangerous. >>reporter: it is. and, you know, we have learned a few more details about this crash. we know the investigators are waiting for the crash team investigators to arrive here on scene. we are on skyline boulevard or highway 35 where it is shut down in both directions from king all the way to manor. we're right on the border of daly city and pacifica and police say the driver inside a black mercedes was killed after hitting a sign and a light pole. we saw fire trucks leaving as we pulled in and we've heard reports that the vehicle was on fire at one stage. we don't know if speed or alcohol was a factor here. we do know that officers are challenged in determining the identity of the victim and that's because the car has paper plates and items inside that car have been burned. now, if you live in this area

and you need to head north, you can take westboro to 280 or callen boulevard or if you are headed southbound, just take king to 280 or callen and wind through the side streets there. it should be several hours before skyline is open again. the coroner has not even arrived yet. we are waiting for the captain to arrive back on scene here, to let us know some more information. and as soon as we learn that, we'll, of course, pass it along to you. we're live in pacifica, i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> all right, tara. time 6:34. we are still following developing news from paris, france this morning, a deadly terrorist attack at a magazine. several people are dead. ktvu's brian flores in our newsroom now. and, brian, you have the latest developments. >>reporter: i do, dave. good morning. we are hearing that 12 people are dead, four people are critically injured and the manhunt is on as the gunmen responsible for the attack remain on the loose. now, french officials just moments ago confirmed that three masked men are responsible for the attack. they originally said two. but reportedly they had automatic weapons and we hear

possibly a rocket-propelled grenade launcher as they stormed the paris headquarters of a satirical magazine called charlie hebdo this morning. the country's alert level is now at its highest possible level. french president frangois hollande is currently in an emergency cabinet meeting this morning. there are obviously many unanswered questions like who the gunmen are and the exact number of those killed. but we understand this morning through the a.p. that the editor in chief of the magazine, a cartoonist and two police officers are among those killed. there is strong reaction throughout the world this morning about the attack. french news outlet says the white house has condemned the shooting in "the strongest possible terms" and the white house is also offering assistance to find those responsible. and british prime minister david cameron calls the murders in paris sickening and saying they stand with the french in fighting terror. hear now from the french president. >> we need to find the axis of this terrorist act.

they must be arrested and brought before judges and condemned as quickly as possible. france is shocked today, is shocked of an attack, terrorist attack. there's no doubt about that. >>reporter: now, the office of that satirical magazine was attacked and firebombed in 2011 after it published cartoons of the prophet mohammed. and earlier today it had tweet out a cartoon about the leader of isis. now, it remains unclear, again, who was behind the attack. so far no person or group is claiming responsibility, but according to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen knew where they were going. some say they were calling the names of people who work there. we'll be following this story throughout the morning. dave, back to you. >> all right, brian, thank you. time is now 6:36. we're finding out more about the man who was shot and killed by san francisco police officers sunday night. last night at a public hearing, police chief greg suhr says it appears 32-year-old matthew hoffman wanted the police to shoot him and had been planning

the deadly confrontation for months. on sunday night hoffman confronted two officers in the mission station parking lot and refused to leave. chief suhr says he showed the officers what looked to be a handgun, pulled it out and pointed it at them. the officers fired their weapons, hitting hoffman three times. at last night's meeting, chief suhr showed a photo of hoffman's weapon which turned out to be a pellet gun. >> they're second guessing themselves right now i'm sure. did they miss an opportunity? should they have seen something they didn't see, at the same time they navigated a life-and- death situation that after they find out it's not a real gun. >> a search of hoffman's cell phone revealed three suicide notes, including one to the officers who shot him, saying they did nothing wrong. on the same day of the shooting, hoffman approached officers on two separate occasions, asking about their weapons and their ammunition. back in february he sent text messages to an officer in connecticut, asking what police would do if a person pointed a

fake gun at them. police say hoffman recently moved to the bay area from connecticut. he was upset with how his life was going, including a new year's day breakup with his girlfriend. baltimore police officers are on high alert after a man walked into one of their stations with a loaded gun. police say yesterday morning 29- year-old jason armstrong came into the station smelling of marijuana. officers searched him and found a handgun with a bullet in the chamber and they found cocaine and marijuana. he told police that he'd been ordered by a gang to bring the gun into the station to test out its security. police say that gang has made threats against police officers in the past. the fbi is now joining the investigation. an east bay teacher is on paid leave this morning after being accused of lewd acts with a student. 49-year-old joe rey vilae is a social studies teacher at james logan high school in union city. he was arrested friday evening. earlier that day school district officials called police after learning of an

inappropriate physical relationship with a female student. school officials do not believe there are other victims, but they are asking anyone with information in the case to contact union city police. our time 6:38. happening today the first public meeting will be held in san jose about the sale of four bay area catholic hospitals. o'connor hospital in san jose, st. louise regional hospital in gilroy, seton medical center in daly city and seton coside in moss beach are the four hospitals being sold, along with two more in l.a. county. last october the daughters of charity health system approve the sale of the hospitals to prime healthcare. some of the workers worry the for-profit company won't continue the hospital's tradition of serving the poor. at 8:00 this morning some of the nurses from daughters of charity hospitals will rally. they'll be asking for time to find another buyer. but other nurses say prime is the only interested buyer in the hospitals which are

struggling to stay open. attorney general kamala harris has to approve the sale first. her decision is expected by next month. new san jose mayor sam liccardo is pretty excited about his new job. on which i'm about to enter. it is now 6:43. welcome back. san francisco police searching for a woman they believe set fire to the house where "mrs. doubtfire" was film. the home at broadway and steiner is currently owned by a surgeon who specializes in transgender surgery. and on monday he says he had a physical confrontation with the woman, a former patient in her 40s. he later smelled gasoline and says his door mats and garage door were on fire. police are now guarding the home in case the suspect returns, but they say they do expect to make an arrest soon. time 6:44. you don't like being stuck in traffic jams, do you? well, there's a new proposal to reduce traffic jams on a popular south bay freeway. ktvu's janeen del la vega live in los gatos. how this will affect drivers. >>reporter: good morning, dave. if you live in san jose and commute up the peninsula to palo alto and beyond using

highway 85, you know how slow it can get, even with a carpool lane, and that's why a city councilman from san jose is urging the v.t.a. to add a lane and to charge a toll. the valley transit authority is considering numerous scenarios, one option would be using the existing carpool lane on highway 85 and turning it into a toll lane. another option is adding an extra lane and making that and the carpool lane into toll lanes. transportation officials say it would speed up the commute around san jose. the stretch of 85 that would be affected is between 87 and 280 which runs from south san jose up to mountainview. city councilman johnny khamis says three lanes in both directions on highway 85 is not enough. >> i would rather spend the money now and make sure that we do expand because if we don't, then we leave it up to future generations and it will actually -- the impact will

of the oakland berkeley hills, there's a pretty good breeze. i've seen 30 in pacifica, in a few locations in san francisco. if you have the breeze, air quality is probably pretty good. if it's calm and hazy, not so good. clear skies, it looks good. high pressure for us. all the energy, i mean, the cold is east of us. it just makes sense, there's too much energy east of us for anything to happen here. clear skies, breezy for some, sunshine for everybody. 30s, 40s and 50s. 50 san francisco. there has to be a breeze at that location. i know napa has an east wind at about 7, that's why they're 47 degrees. this is above los gatos. at 400 feet 31 degrees. 30s for gilroy, so just tremendous differences in some of the lows. la honda 57, yet 30s for woodside, foster city, menlo park and also palo alto. san mateo at 41. still an easterly component. again, not all locations in san francisco, but it looks like inner and outer richmond, again, some areas getting about

welcome back. it is now 6:54. governor brown says he's confident california's high speed rail system will be built. >> high speed rail links us from the past to the future, from the south to fresno and north. this is freuly a california -- truly a california project bringing us together today. [ applause ] >> the governor attend that ceremonial groundbreaking yesterday in fresno at the site of a planned bullet train station 30 years after the high speed rail system was first proposed linking san francisco with los angeles. construction is slowly getting under way. critics of the $68 billion project protested, though, at that groundbreaking. >> they voted for $45 billion for the entire system including sacramento and san diego. now it's $68 billion from san francisco to los angeles and
