we start with breaking news after an historic weekend closure. as you can see the golden gate bridge has reopened to traffic more than six hours early. the road closed signs were picked up in the last half hour and this is a live look from the plaza. you can see the new barrier is running down the middle of the bridge. good evening i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm heather holmes. we do begin with new developments and the closure of the iconic golden gate bridge. today we got to see a new

addition of the bridge in action. clipper trucks practiced moving the barrier. the bridge reopened to traffic, ktvu's katie utehs joins us this afternoon. >> reporter: the bridge will be ready for the morning commute. the only work remaining is removing the rest of the sleeves from the old pylons. but i'm told that work can happen in the coming days and does not stop the opening. and what the closure did do is providen a unique experience for people many of us have walked across the golden gate bridge bringing family and friends. i tell you tonight's trip across the bridge was unlike any other i had experienced. the chatter of people easily heard on an evening absent of the elements often associated with a walk across the golden gate bridge, or whipping wind or traffic. >> it looked a little eerie but

it's cool. >> reporter: the closure brought people out who never bothered before. >> we're both natives and we never actually walked across .7av)gpzóeyr =v d9b hìqkof=íok omething we've been wanting to do and with the bridge closure we thought it would be something we should come check out. >> it was awesome. >> it was awesome. we got great pictures. >> reporter: the work will save lives and prevent serious injuries like those suffered by dr. gray sammons who was injured in 2008. >> many conditions can be changed and could have prevented the accident. the median barrier being the one that we're celebrating today. >> as survivors and political leaders cut ribbon this morning, crews toiled all day to remove 15,000 sleeves which held the movable pylon used to move. >> we're just filling them in

so the road will be smooth and no one will see them and they will just keep going. >> reporter: practicing with the zipper truck that will move the median kept workers busy into the evening hours. toll bridge managers already look to future projects. >> later this year we will advertise and start construction on the suicide barrier. all these projects are about saving lives. >> reporter: with the hope that the golden gate will bring people together not due to an accident or death. >> i'm so grateful. because maybe in the future, people will meet in a slightly different way. >> reporter: perhaps just for the pictures. >> i tell you people are certainly excited to walk across the bridge. a while ago people walked by and yelled that they were the first to walk over the bridge. >> reporter: if you plan to drive through it tomorrow morning, pay attention to the signs. engineers expect everything to

are expected to survive. the shooting happened at the fiesta nightclub. police have detained several people but have not made any arrests at this point. azenith smith spent the night at the club and talked to people who were there. >> reporter: all day people have been returning looking for items lost such as keys. and if you can see, there's shoes scattered everywhere as people made their way out after the gunshots erupted. r & b star chris brown had not been on stage for more than five minutes performing the song "loyal" before shots rang out. in this you tube video you can hear the gunfire then screaming. video on the star's vine shows his reaction before security whisks him away. just as people start to walk out, gunfire erupts again.

people get trampled as they try to find an exit. >> pushing, running, everybody trying to get out. >> reporter: edgar jimenez was behind the bar among those who ran for cover. >> you have to try to just go down. >> get down, get down. i'm scared. >> reporter: when police got there they found four people shot. they were rushed to the hospital. a fifth shooting victim walked into the hospital a short time later. >> i was worried about losing my friends that i was with and i just, my first thought was just get out. just hope i don't get hit. >> reporter: marlene gomez paid $44 to pay for the tickets that was billed as a birthday bash. >> if we were patted down and guys were patted down, i don't

know how someone could get in there with a gun or any sort of weapon. >> reporter: the venue changed last minute from the rock bar theater in san jose to the fiesta nightclub due to capacity issues. the circumstances and the motive for the shooting are still under investigation. brown is scheduled to be back in san jose for a concert in march at sap center. ktvu channel 2 news. police in san francisco are asking for tips from the public in that deadly shooting friday night that left four men dead. it happened about 10:00 p.m. friday near the corner of laguna and page streets. that's in the city of hayes valley neighborhood. people have been bringing candles. the men were inside a stolen honda when they were shot. investigators have been putting up signs asking for help from the public to try to track down the assailants. police departments around the world are on high alert tonight after a new threat from

isis. also known as the islamic state. the threat comes just days after 17 people were killed in a wave of terror attacks in france. today we learned the gunman involved in one of those attacks at a kosher grocery store devoted his life to isis. the terror group released a video message yesterday calling for its followers to rise up and kill police and its civilians. specifically naming the u.s., france, australia and canada. in france today a massive show of solidarity with the victims of those recent terror attacks. world leaders linked arms as they led more than an estimated 1.6 million people through the streets of paris to denounce those killings. those in the crowds called for peace and an ends for extremism. and among those marching were muslims with the signs, not in

the name of ala. >> reporter: the city and nation are trying to heal after a series of terrorists attack took victims. world leaders locked arms with french president to remember the dead. both israeli prime minister and palestinian authority president attended. 2,300 police officers and para military officers provided security. according to a french police source, terrorists sleeper cells are now activated. the president met several members of the charlie hebdo

islamic state. it's not known if the terror group was part of the attack at the kosher market. and also, authorities found the hide away of coulibaly in the days before the attack. they found flags and guns from the islamic state. meanwhile the search continues for coulibaly's girlfriends. authorities believed hayat boumeddiene was at that market. however, they found that she entered turkey on the january 2nd and is now in syria. the headquarters of hebdo headquarters were attacked today.

a crucial discovery into the investigation of air asian. they have now found the second black box. the head of the indonesia search and rescue say that divers located and recovered the flight data recorder which had information on engine performance. and we have just learned that divers also found the crucial cockpit voice recorder. the boxes of course will be critical in determines what exactly caused the air bus 320 to crash back on december 28th with 162 people on board. animal rights advocates are protesting against whole foods for what they say is humane fraud. they brought their protests inside a whole foods in san francisco this afternoon. one of dozens across the country. they are accusing whole foods of marketing itself as humane when they say there is no humane way to slaughter animals. >> we're demanding that whole

foods take animals off of their menu. if they really care about animals, the minimum thing they can do is to stop using them and stop hurting them. >> reporter: the protests followed a recent posting of a you tube video called truth matters, it claims to throw hens into a pen. the group responded by saying, we have visited petaluma farms and we did not see any such conditions. right now the south is exhausted because they can't possibly see all their patients. >> kaiser employees complain of understaffing and plan to take action against the hospital. workers next step over the fight. and the unfolding investigation and possible criminal charges against

mike murray explains the reason for this five day strike and how it will affect patient care. >> reporter: a licensed clinical social worker mayo has been busy rescheduling her patients. >> the clinicians will be out monday through friday. >> reporter: the strike by the national health care workers starts tomorrow and will include kaiser's sacramento facility on morris avenue. along with nine other facilities. other facilities are targeted throughout the week. the issue union activists say is stafferring. >> -- staffing. >> right flow the staff is exhausted. they can't see all their patients and they feel for people who can't get in often enough. >> reporter: in a satellite interview today, kaiser insists it is handling the added load of new patients from the affordable care act.

>> we've increased the number of workers by 25%. our membership has grown 8% during that same time. so we're hiring therapists at three times the rate that our membership is growing. >> reporter: last september, kaiser paid a $4 million fine to the state. following accusations of long wait times to see a mental health professional. >> we're looking at increasing convenience for our members, expanding evening and weekend hours but to do all of this, we need the help of our therapists and mental health care workers. the last thing we need is for them to walk away from patients this next week. >> reporter: tomorrow's planned strike is just ahead of a nurses strike that is scheduled for november 24th and 22nd. the head of the -- -- at issue is whether petraeus give

remote control. the attacks come amidst an offensive by haram in the area. they have used female suicide bombers in the past. haram kidnapped two schoolgirls in april last year. they are still missing. a san francisco man allegedly behind a black market website silk road is set to go on trial in new york this week. new york city prosecutors say ross william olbret ran the site where cocaine, heroin and other drugs were sold to more than 100,000 customers. he's also accused of attempting to protect his operation by asking others to kill those who posed a threat to his business. jury selection is set for tuesday, olbret have pled not guilty. police are looking for a suspect accused of opening fire. when they got there they found the injured man near by on nevado street. police say the wound is not

his home has died. joe bell died at his home at the age of 95. he gained national attention when he stood saluting in his uniform. dozens of runners slowed down, shook his hand and thanked him for his service. the attention he received for his military service energized him. a memorial for bell is planned for next weekend. plenty of glitz and glamour in the south bay where a fashion show helped raise a lot of money for a little girl in need. gizelle contreras is fighting leukemia. on sale beaded skirts made by a cancer survivor. >> i can't tell you enough by everybody who has touched my

more than 3 million people took part in rallies in france today. it was all to honor those killed by terrorists this week. rallies were held around the world including here in the bay area over 1,000 people gathered at civic center plaza at san francisco city hall. in their demonstration against
