now at noon, california attorney general kamala harris has launched her campaign for the u.s. senate. who she is promising to fight for? facebook is launching a new program that uses the social media giant's popularity to help find missing children. plus -- the french satirical newspaper where 12 people were killed last week is getting ready to release its first issue since the deadly attacks, as the search continues for accomplices in the terror plot. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell.

california attorney general and bay area native, kamala harris, has now launched her campaign to succeed barbara boxer in the u.s. senate. sal castanedo joins us from the newsroom with more on her campaign. good afternoon, sal. >> tori, good afternoon. it was expected and it came. the announcement that harris, a democrat, will pursue boxer's senate seat. this morning the announcement was made on her website. now, on her website, harris asked her supporters to help her build a grassroots campaign that reaches every community of california. the 50-year-old attorney general was once d.a. in oakland and san francisco and is now currently in her second term. she's the first woman and african-american to be california attorney general and is seen as a rising political star. on her website, she says in part, i will be a fighter for middle-class workers who are feeling the pinch of stagnant wages and diminishing opportunity. our children deserve a world- class education. senator bar brow boxer who is

74 years old -- barbara boxer, who is 74 years old, announced she will not run for re- election. immediately people began to speculate as to who would rise up from the ranks. lieutenant-governor newsom was mentioned. he came out on twitter saying he is not interested in the seat preferring to bork more closely within -- to work more closely within state politics. kamala harris has state-wide recognition and has even garnered national attention. analysts say she will try to make a case as to why her career as a prosecutor will serve her well. they add some might question whether she has enough experience to slide into a role as a legislator in the senior house of congress. they also say some might oppose her based on her conviction record as prosecutor. of course, those who have been watching harris say you ka can't count her out of any race she runs in. one of the things going for her

is here youth. she's 50, which is relatively young, to serve as a u.s. senator. tori, that should make you and i very happy. >> yes, it does. thank you, sal. there are several other contenders. eric swalwell said he's thinking about running as well as antonio villa ra go saw -- villaraigosa. s, as well steyer, ja knelt napolitano and jackie speier. as for republican names, former state chairman tom becrara and sundheim said they might run. facebook says it will soon start providing amber alerts to people who live in an area where a child has gone missing.

it's working with the national center for missing and exploited children to send comprehensive alerts to users' news feeds. >> any member of the facebook community who may be in the search area will receive a message in their time line that. that message will include critical information, like a picture of the child, a vehicle description and any other information that the police think is important to help bringing that child home. >> facebook says several children have already been reunited with their families as a result of information shared on facebook. a doctor in east contra costa county is facing serious charges after police allegedly found child pornography at his home. 74-year-old dr. michael russell worked at this office in pittsburg before he recently retired. russell was arrested friday and charged with possession of child pornography. the contra costa county d.a.'s office says more than 600 pictures and videos of children under 12 years old were found

stored on a computer at his brentwood home. >> some people think that these are victimless crimes but they are not because viewers who watch child pornography create a marketplace for people to abuse children and place these images of these children on the internet. >> russell is currently gree on $150,000 bail. if convicted, he faces up to five years in prison. investigators are now looking into the death of a 16- year-old foster child from antioch who was found dead in his bed last month. steven was prescribed the anti- depressant zoloft and the sedating antihistamine vistarel. but he didn't get medical care despite his grandmother's pleas. toxicology results are pending. and officials at burton

middle school are notifying parents about three students who overdosed on over the counter cough medicine. >> the 8th grade girls were taken to the hospital after they took up to 12 pills. the girls asked school staff for help after the effects of the medicine intensified. one of the girls brought the pills from home and they got the idea from a youtube video on how to turn cough medicine into intoxicating drinks. just a few hours ago, france's lower parliament approved extending airstrikes against the islamic state group in iraq. this comes as family and friends bid a final fairwell to some of the victims killed in last week's terror attacks. charlie hebdo's surviving journallallists are getting ready to publish another issue. >> reporter: four french jews killed in a kosher grocery store, flown to s&p. the victims remembered at a funeral in jerusalem. family members joined by israeli and french officials.

amendments. investigators are trying to determine what caused smoke to fill a metro subway station in washington, d.c. yesterday killing one person. it happened during the evening rush hour when passengers suddenly found themselves consumed pie clouds of smoke -- by clouds of smoke. cell phone video shows people stuck inside a train for over an hour. many struggled to breathe. passengers were told not to try and open the doors. >> all of a sudden, the train stopped. smoke everywhere. lights go out. >> more than 200 people were evacuated, many of them forced to escape on their own. the ntsb is now leading the investigation. a former bay area gas station manager now being accused of only selling losing lottery tickets. plus, the air quality around the bay area is

new details now in the investigation into what caused air air shaw flight 8 -- airasia flight 8501 to crash into the sea. it could take two weeks to study the boxes. yesterday, the plane's flight data recorder was brought to the surface. divers still have 114 bodies to recover. the california lottery commission says if you purchased lottery scratcher tickets in san bruno, you might want to check them carefully. lottery investigators say a manager at a chevron station in san bruno was secretly looking up which scratchers were winners and only selling losing tickets to customers. it's called pinning. it involves using a pin or other sharp object to uncover a verification code on the ticket. >> this person here would do

confidence until the 5% per year increase is repealed. it could be weeks before students at san francisco city college are allowed back on the college's civic center campus. most of the students at that campus are learning english as a second language. they were not told anything until yesterday when they returned to classes after their winter break. school officials say the building on eddie street is shut down because it would be unsafe in an earthquake. >> we didn't want to present this issue to the students and to the faculty without having a concrete solution. so we couldn't tell them there was a safety issue and not tell them what we were gonna do about it. >> city college said the building need $13 million in repairs. it's not clear how long it will be shut down. so the school says classes will begin in about three weeks at the city college campus on goff street, which is about a two 20- minute walk away. san francisco police are looking for the public's help to find a woman missing since

sunday. 87-year-old mai tran was last seen as she left home from a walk. sheem suffers from short-term memory loss as well as high blood pressure. she is 5'6" and weighs 100 pounds. she only speaks cantonese. anyone with information is asked to call police immediately. the measles outbreak linked to two disney theme parks is growing. now there are 26 confirmed measles cases linked to people who were at or in contact with people who went to disneyland or california adventure last month. that is seven new confirmed cases. 22 of the cases are here in california but there are also confirmed cases in utah, colorado, and washington state. san francisco muni today announced it's expanding the light rail fleet. the city is already planned to replace the entire fleet of 175 light rail cars over the next six years. but today, city officials say

they are going to increase that number by 40 more. the manufacturer offered the opportunity for the extra cars and the city calls it a smart investment. >> these cars are smart cars. they are gonna be reliable. they are gonna be more convenient to the passengers. and also say they have the added value that because they are made in sacramento, made in the usa. >> the new light rail cars should start arriving as soon as 2016. they will be ready for the opening of the new central subway line in 2019. well, there is no spare-the- air day today. after 11 straight days of air quality warnings. yesterday's alert tied a record for the most spare-the-air days in a row that was just set last year. the still, stagnant air allows pollution to build up, especially from fireplace smoke. air quality managers say there could be more alerts before the weekend. a pretty winter's day

shipping up around the bay area. let's step outside. we started out with some fog this morning. but not any longer. we're looking at mostly sunny skies as cross the entire prayer. if i give you a look at storm tracker 2, the only area still dealing with fog is the central valley. if you are traveling, you will find trouble there ut. outside oir doors, we have mostly sunny skies. i have a six-hour time lapse on it. you will notice how the clouds begin to pull ail way from the coastline. we actually have a bit of offshore flow today and that is what has helped to clear us out and bring us better air quality. no spare the air day. if we look at the grand scheme of things a lot going on over the pacific but the ridge of high pressure locked over the area looks like it will continue to bring us wet weather. we are here tuesday afternoon. notice, again, over the pacific, picking up on some rain here. as it moves closer to the coast, tuesday, wednesday, it falls apart. we don't get any of that.

we have another one here by thursday, it's moving up and over california being deflected by the ridge of high pressure that remains here. we have held onto the hope that we could see rain this weekend. and now i roll you into saturday. take a look at what's going on the we have mostly cloudy skies. but this rain is sticking to the north. we will continue to track this but it's not looking so good at this point. so for today, we do have the mostly sunny skies. started out with the fog this morning. no longer any trouble. we've got a week ahead of dry conditions, 60s in the forecast, it will be beautiful out there today. in fact, it already is. as we get into the weekend, we'll see a cooler pattern and are hoping for supreme court. temperature-wise in the low 50s to the low os. 63 in santa rosa. 61 for san francisco. and livermore, you are checking in at 61. as we get into the afternoon, temperatures will feel like yesterday. turned out to be a beautiful day in most areas yesterday. here we go again. 62 for vallejo.

peanuts. the variety are the spicy black bean and chipotle black bean. the fda says no illnesses have been reported. it would be called the yard. after the break, a new proposal to create a beer garden near the home of the san francisco giants.

markets have climbed this morning after a survey suggested the rapid pace of hiring in 2014 will continue this year. but stocks have now reversed

course in afternoon training after energy stocks slumped again. crude oil down to 45.44 a barrel and home builders' stock dropped after a builder said the demand for homes was weak. the dow is down 57. the nasdaq is down 14 and the s&p is down 8. if you have frequent flier accounts with united or american airlines, you should probably check that account. hackers acquired stolen passwords and used them to try to get into accounts at both airlines. last month, thieves try toed to get -- tried to get free tickets or upgrade on tickets they already butte. the hackers had information for more than 10,000 accounts and have made successful transactions on 35 so far. the airlines are freezing accounts and setting up in you ones for affected customers. more shuttle bus drivers in silicon valley apparently want

to unionize. most drivers signed cards with the teamsters union. they've notified yahoo!, zinga, apple, genentic. drivers complained that they have to work split shifts and only get paid for the time they are actually driving tech workers. the san francisco giants are hoping to transform a parking lot across the street from at&t park into a beer garden called "the yard." in a few hours, the team will present the idea to the port commission. the proposed 17,000-square foot ven unis at the parking lot across -- venue is at the parking lot across the lefty o'doul bridge. the conis to use 15 shipping containers to house stands like san francisco-based brewery anchor steam and other restaurants and coffee shops. if approved, the site would be available as soon as march. two beverage giants are making more money on smaller products as consumers cut back

on the amount of soda they are drinking. coke and pepsi are pushing their smaller 7 and a half- ounce cans and bottles. you can see the one on the right is a bit smaller. they say they contain fewer calories and induce less guilt. however, those cans cost more. they are 3 cents an ounce more than the bigger cans. less than 48 hours after winning the first golden global, amazon has signed a famous name to create a web series. woody allen will craft a half- hour show due to be released next year on amazon prime. he joked, i have no idea how i got into it, i have no ideas. on sunday, transparent became the first streaming show to win at the golden globes. it picked up best comedy series and best actor. we're working to learn more about three 8th grade girls in the south bay. police say the girls became sick when they ingested a large
