fire and two others. it happened at the ash wood town home complex near beach wood. ktvu's allie rasmus is there where she spoke to neighbors. they said he always seemed odd? >> reporter: first up, the latest from investigators. three homes were destroyed by the fire, several others damaged. this happened near the ash wood town home complex. you can see the fire truck on scene with crime scene tape and martinez police are blocking off the streets which is why we are down hill from where this happened. the investigation is well underway. >> reporter: 1:00 p.m. this afternoon firefighters get a call about four separate fires burning in the complex in martinez. firefighters tackled the flames quickly. no one was hurt. once the fire was out, the water shut off, the investigation into how the

more now on breaking news out of newark, a car crashed into the door at the macy's at the new park mall before 5:00 p.m. we learned that car actually went 50 feet into the store. four people were hurt. but we don't go extent of their injuries. crews are still -- know the extent of their injuries. crews are still on the scene. again, the new piece of information that we just learned, that car went 50 feet inside that macy's and that four people were injured. today tom hanks penned an essay about his time at college in hayward and offered to support president obama's plan for free tuition. he says he owes his success to his time in college.

make for a crucial member of a mountain search and rescue team. how a highly trained golden retriever is helping firefighters and ski patrols find people who are lost in the woods. >> reporter: if you are buried deep in snow, this dog could be your best chance of survival. >> ready to work? ready to work? search. >> reporter: here is what a rescue looks like to trooper. his mission is to find the avalanche victims. >> the dog is using his nose. the dog picks up the scent. >> in a minute he found his target. for the dog it is a game of hide and seek. but for her, it is a matter of survival. >> how much time does a human have to survive?

>> 5 minutes. >> reporter: that is why they are teaming up with the fire department to learn the latest search and rescue techniques. including this beacon that could pick up electronic signals. rescuers learn how to sample snow conditions to gauge when an avalanche is likely to occur. when you see them using these probes they are most likely to recover a body instead of saving a life. the snow could be deep in the mountains. it is easy to get lost in the woods. the fire department says they receive 7-8 calls for help. >> unfortunately i have known four people that perished in avalanches. and we lost two ski team members. >> reporter: emergency responders say the key it survival is knowing the terrain and being prepared.
