morning. you can see the front of the macy's store still boarded up. not clear if or when that store will reopen. tara moriarty, she's going have more in a report. we'll check in with her in a couple minutes. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. a lot to talk about in weather and traffic. steve paul son. fog. officer todd, pleasant hill police department said 0 visibility. >> wow. >> very thick. >> that's very dangerous. if you know that area, familiar with that, believe me, it's really tough. other areas in on this, too, just the fog advisories for the east bay. north bay has fog. a little around oakland airport, sfo. not just favoring one area. it kind of did yesterday. to late in the morning when some of that fog made it over to marin county.

north valley, east bay. southward as well. judi at santa clara said, "i can see fog." you can see the footprint of the fog in the valley. some of that continues to drift our way. few high clouds will continue to work their way in the north bay. 0s for many. fairfield in there. fog, fog, fog. napa, nevada, san rosa, redwood city. close for others. if it wasn't for the fog, it'd be colder. wood side is down to 34. 0s for others, including san mateo, foster city. east breeze, southeast. just enough of a breeze there to get that fog over here. high, mid--level clouds will be in the north bay. fog, clouds to the north, hazy skies, hazy sun to the south. that fog is a big story. . stupid fog i think is what you heard. >> that's right. >> you know the twitter people. they're very cloud cover >> they are. >> they're commenting on the fog. no joke, really. you have to be careful today because of dense fog.

let's go out, take a lock at the pictures we can see at the bay bridge. you will see traffic is backed up all the way out to the mac arthur maze. those metering lights are on. no major problems, by the way, if you are driving into the city. looking tat san mateo bridge that's moderately heavy. no major problems driving through. the traffic is going to be very slow. chp has issued a dense fog advisory for the santa rosa area if p morning. i'm reading it off the cad here. please be careful with the fog. traffic is going to be busy as you drive on to the atmont pass. 6:03. let's go back to the desk. time now 6:03. one person still in critical condition after being hit by a car that crashed into the new park mall yesterday, and dragged the man inside the store. ktvu tara moreoriarty at the macy's store. you can show us the damaged

area of that store. >> reporter: definitely. it's been boarded up. the car went through the front of the macy's store. quiet now. yesterday it was quite a frantic scene here at macy's. the car smashed through the front doors of the store, taking down racks, clothes in its path. all this unfolded before 5:00 last night. you can imagine how chaotic it must have been when the blue honda slammed through the glass doors, and landed about 50 feet inside the men's department. firefighters treated half a dozen people. four of them, including the driver, had to be taken to the hospital. >> i was in the mall earlier, had to go back through macy's. it was closed. couldn't walk through. somebody drove in macy's. wow. >> reporter: a man on the sidewalk suffered the most injuries. he was the one dragged. an eight-year-old believed to be the man's daughter suffered bruises. officials believe the driver was a 63-year-old woman who had some sort of medical

condition. no word yet on whether macy's will open today. . tara moriarrty, ktvu news. one man living in a martinez condominium complex is in jail. >> he's accused of setting fire to several homes, including his own. >> located on ashwood drive off morello road south of highway 4. firefighters, you can see, they had to rush to the site. this was about 1:00 yesterday. flames and smoke could be seen for miles. investigators believe 52-year- old david boil set the fires. damage is estimateed at hundreds of thousands of dollars. one neighbor lost most of his holiday keepsakes, deck rations. >> meant a lot to my wife. she write all the christmas cards. she had relatives.

back and forth christmas. she'd do all the writing. i'd do all the decorating. >> neighbors say david boyle was being evicted from his home. that's where he lived since the 19 90s. his son told ktvu the mood of his father recently changed for the worse. >> and i'd try to -- there's no reason to reason with him. like he didn't even hear me. >> boyle was eventually chased down by the police. one officer used a stun gun. no injuries have been reported from the fires, and the investigation continues. in the south bay, alert neighbors helped save the life of a man who was asleep in a burning apartment. that happened last night at the apartment complex on north lake drive in san jose. the fire started in a carport. it burned three cars before spreading to two apartments. neighbors banged on the sleeping man's door. the cause of that fire is under investigation. your time is now 6:06.

happening today, san francisco mayor ed lee will deliver his state of the city address. ktvu has an exclusive preview of it. ktvu's brian flores in our newsroom. brian, the mayor's top priority this year. >> reporter: the mayor will talk about plenty of goals this year. his main one, at least when we spoke with him, is to address creating more housing and how to better hand the city's homeless. now, how does he plan on doing that? well this morning, the mayor will lay out several steps. the mayor says he will propose a housing bond on the november ballot that will go toward creating more affordable housing in the city. he also says he wants to increase loans for first-time home buyers by $100 million over the next 10 years. . >> speck later are not landlords. make that very strong distinction. because they aren't landlords

nor are they interested in being responsible landlords, i want the realtors to join me in this fight. >> now mayor lee was supported by voters in san francisco. they have a goal of rebuilding or making 30,000 homes by 2020. last year 40,000 homes were created in san francisco. a great feet, still a thousands homes short of the mayor's goal. the mayor's address is the for 10:00 a.m. this morning. it's being held at the wholesale produce market a move mayor lee says will demonstrate the city's commitment to local jobs. coming up on "mornings on two," we'll hear from san francisco residents on their reaction to the mayor's proposals. >> interesting. thank you. mayor lee says he wants to work toward eliminating poverty in san francisco. ''the chronicle" reports the mayor wants to create a new one-stop help and housing cent father for the homeless. crude oil prices on a roller coaster ride. this morning, the price for

u.s. oil dropping again. down about a dollar a barrel. that's after they jumped more this and $2 and a half yesterday. the biggest jump in a single day since june 2012. drivers are not feeling much of that when you fill up your tank. local prices down about a half a cent from yesterday, at an average of $2.62 around the bay. new this morning, just about 30 minutes ago, the oscar nominations were announced in beverly hills. ''star trek" movie actor chris pine announced the nominees. the films receiving the most nominations are "the grand budapest hotel" and "big hero 9." . here are the nominees for best picture: "american sniper" "boyhood," "the grand budapest

steal the spotlight from the islamic state terror groups. the groups are competing for attention and financing. one of the two brothers who carried out the charlie hebdo attack was in yes, ma'amen in 2011 and reportedly met an al chi day leader. president obama and british prime minister david cameron they're presenting a united front reacting the paris terror attacks. they wrote a joint op ed piece. the headline: "we won't let the voice of freedom be muzzled." the two leaders said safeguarding the way of life in the u.s. and britain depends on economic strength, and standing up to trim. later this evening, president obama will host the british prime minister for a working dinner at the white house. after scandal and several security lapses, a major shakeup is happening inside the u.s. secret service. five top secret service officials are leaving their jobs. four are being forced out. a fifth is opting to retire.

this comes after a scathing report last month from the department of homeland security that said the secret service is, quote, "starved for leadership." the first big shakeup at the agency since the former director julia pearson resigned in october. now, she quit after several security breaches, including the case where a man with a knife climbed over the white house fence, and ran into the white house. california farmers must now abide by the nation's strictest rules for a widely-released pesticide. that's a pesticide injected into the ground before planting crops, such as strawberries, tomatoes, and al mondays. state officials say, in recent years, the chemical caused hundreds of people who live and work near agricultural fields to suffer from irritated eyes, coughing fits, headaches. we're learning new lessons for last august's earthquake in napa. experts with the u.s. geological survey have been studying the damage left behind. they say the building sustained

the most damage were built before 1950. those buildings were not designed to seismic codes passed over the last 40 years. they also say brick chimneys are especially vulnerable in earthquakes, noting rubble from chimneys was responsible for half the total number of red tags. the usgs said it has detected postquake motion. they are known as after slips, and they say they expect that movement to continue for at least three more years. time is 6:16. hey, sal. i know you're watching the fog problems this morning. >> right. >> keeping an eye on highway 101. >> we are. in san francisco -- it's clear. if you have an hdtv looks nice. northbound 101 approaching the 80 split. not a lot of fog here. some of those fog pictures we're getting from viewers in the east bay, very accidents fog. i think steve just posted one of fog in valeo. my goodness. be careful if you drive-through

that area. if you drive in the east bay. dense fog advisories have been issued for drivers. go to the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see traffic is moving along okay as you drive-through. it's backed up to the macarthur maze. in the south bay, we don't have a lot going on, which is nice. santa clara valley looking good. as you approach the 880 interchange all the way up to sunny vale. you can get a decent drive. 6:17. let's go to steve. >> i know the national weather service issued the dense fog for the east bay, but the chp did for santa row is a. >> reporter: when chp does it it's mere merely a driver's thing. chp is saying the fog is so dense in the santa rosa, you should be very careful. >> also reports from gary in pet lieu ma, same thing. napa airport has fog. a little bit toward sfo, oakland, down toward santa clara valley. not a lot. the thickest is toward the east bay. about as bad as i've seen it.

be advised. if you haven't left the house yet, it's really bad if you're around pleasant hill, rocket, highway four coming from oakly, brentwood or antioch. thick fog, hazy skies. temperatures coming down. friday into sunday, clouds. if there's any rain it would be north of santa row is a. looks weak. next week looks dry. the extended dramatic through the rest of the month looks dry. a dome of high pressure is on some of the forecasted outlets ten days out. does not bode well for rain anytime soon. if it does not happen this weekend or makes it south of santa rosa, i'd be very surprised. does not look like a strong system. lake county into mend see that county, light rain. south of that, no. fog is a big story. that's what we have to deal with. the thickest is in the east bay, all bets are off next hour and a half. over the bay as well. if you don't have that fog b glad. it's also cold.

today marks the sixth anniversary of the miracle on the hudson. on january 15th, 2009, you might not ever forget those incredible pictures. u.s. airways flight 1549 left new york's laguardia airport, ran into a flock of geese, damaging both engines. danville based pilot captain chosely sullen berger made an emergency landing on the hudson river, and the u.s. coast guard, new jersey police, new york police were all on the scene within 4 minutes, and all 155 people on board made it out safely. only a few minor injuries were

repelled down, expecting the worst. he was revealed to find sebastian still breathing, still alive. >> just a flood of emotions. i have a four-year-old at home. hit home. >> for weeks, he's been checking up on sebastian's condition. yesterday he was finally able to see sebastian for himself. sebastian's mother says her son is doing amazing, and was eager to meet his heros. >> i can't even describe in words how i feel. there are no words for how grateful, for how -- just how grateful i am. >> we understand. sebastian suffered a head injury, several broken bones. look at him surrounded by his loved ones here. he's expected to be released from the hospital in a couple of weeks. the best team in the, the golden state warriors racked up another milestone last night. they played in front of their 100th straight sell-out crowd at oracle arena, and they scorched

it's really tough fog came back in yesterday, never retreated completely. it did, but you can see it off to the east. high and mid--level clouds coming from the north bay from a weak system. 30s and 40s on the temps. a cold pattern if you oar stuck in that fog. even if you have clear skies, might be frost on the rooftops or icing. 39 petaluma. gary, observer said, "i can't see far out the window either." that's a weak system. won't be much there instead of high clouds. the fog the big story. high clouds farther south, hazy sun. 0s on these temps. mainly low 60s. sal, you oar getting tweets. i'm getting tweets. >> it's fog by. what doesn't work is high beams. remember driver's ed or the driver's test at the dmv, they emphasize that. be careful. take a look at what we have

with interstate 80. the mac arthur maze. where all these freeways come together, you are going to see a lot of slow traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza. please give yourself extra time. by the time you actually get to the toll plaza here, you will see the traffic is backed up. going to be one of those drives. also looking now at the commutes in the east bay. you'll see the traffic at the toll plaza westbound, as we mention is going to be slow through there. no major problems on the bridge. the bridge itself isn't that foggy. a little fog, but coming into san francisco, for example,, i was just looking at one of those pictures. it looks clear. let's go to san jose in the south bay, where the slowest traffic is on 101 northbound, but 288, 85 look good, as a matter of fact. what doesn't look that food is the livermore valley. slow traffic here. 680 is slow. out of pleasantton to the milpedas area, didn't take long for that to get slow. let's go back to the desk.

still one person at the hospital in critical condition this morning after a crash at an east bay mall yesterday. tara moriarty joins us from the macy's where it is quite obvious where the crash happened. >> reporter: definitely. you can see where the car crashed through, all the plywood as you can see behind me at the macy's department store. the car smashed through the front doors of the store, taking down glass, racks, clothes, customers in its path. all of this unfolded just before 5:00 last night, and you can imagine just how frantic people must have been when the blue honda slammed through the glass doors, and landed about 50 feet inside the men's department. alameda county firefighters treated half a dozen people. four of them, including the driver, had to be taken to the hospital. >> as you'd expect, somewhat chaotic. a lot of people. we had determined how many patients we had, if we had enough resources, and then locate them.

they were not in one spot. >> reporter: a man on the sidewalk suffered the most injuries. he had been dragged inside. an eight-year-old, believed to be the man's daughter, suffered just bruises. officials believe the driver was a 63-year-old woman who had some sort of medical condition, and we're not sure if macy's will be opening today. we're live in newark, i'm tara moriarty. back to you. time 6:35. the san jose police department say they need more police officers. a million mow was isn't out departmentwide notifying officers changes are coming because of staffing shortages. ktvu's georgia mean de la vega in san jose this morning. tell us about it impact on officers and the public, georgia mean. >> reporter: dave, it's the specialized units that investigate certain crimes that will lose officers. the department continues to deal with officers retiring and leaving. about 20 are retiring, and several others are resigning other reasons this month. part of a trend the force has

been dealing with for awhile. in part because these officers are looking for better pay and benefits. to nil in the gaps, the chief has decided to take officers and supervisors out of specialized units, such as gang suppression, traffic enforcement, missing personal, instead reassign them to patrol. the chief wants to make sure they are answering all 911 calls, and admits other areas will not get as much attention. a concern, though, for those who live and work in the city. >> i think it will always be a concern when we're short-staffed or the police department. i believe, whenever there's a lack of enough police to, you know, patrol the areas that need patrolling, of course some effect. might increase crime. also might increase the ability for police to respond to any calls. >> reporter: the department is also a push for mandatory overtime for patrol officers. that portion of the new staffing change needs to be discussed with the police union before it goes through. in the meantime, though, the department is trying to

recruit officers. there's an academy, but as the numbers of recruits that come out of that academy continues to be low. pam? . >> thank you, georgia mean. time now 6:36. an ohio man behind bars accused of plotting a terrorist attack on the u.s. capital. twenty-year-old christopher lee cornell was arrested at a gun store in cincinnati in an undercover operation. the fbi says it first learned about him after he posted online messages voicing support for the islamic terror group. cornell told an fbi in fact manhattan he planned to set off pipe bombs bombs at the capital building, then gun down people as they ran out and pan i could. a retired agent tells us at ktvu news tells us loan -- pose a danger than militant groups. >> a big problem. you don't have to actually associate yourself with an organization. you have to associate yourself with an idea. >> a criminal complaint against cornell states he had tried to contact isis

militants overseas for orders; but when none came, he is then suspected of going on his and hatching a plot to attack washington. congressman eric saldwell says the u.s. faces several terror threats. we caught one the congressman last night at sfo. he had just come back from washington. salwell a member of the house intelligence committee. he told ktvu terrorists increasingly are using social media, and that's a special concern. >> what we've seen from these individuals is they tend to telegraph what they're going to do on social media right now because they want to got credit for it if they are to do in a successful attack. >> congressman falwell says the best way to prevent attacks in the u.s., provide enough resources to law enforcement, work with allies to track the movements of suspected terrorists. later this morning. >> ktvu will be there, pam,

when the two men who climbed el capitan, they will share their story how they made it to the top. yesterday afternoon, the family members and friends stood by. they witnessed history, and celebrated when they did it did. >> they are the first to climb the don wall of el capitan using a rope to catch them if they fell. they didn't use their hands and their feet. this picture captured the moment they embraced after successfully reaching that summit. >> in this video, you can barely make out the last of the two -- took 19 days to complete the 3,000 foot climb. they ate and slept in tents, tiny hedges of that rockwall.

rockwall. the president tweeted out this picture. he congratulateed the climbers, saying, quote, "you remind us anything is possible." . time now 6:39. the owner of memo park dry cleaning business is behind bars, accused of cheating 35 customers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. gary smith is the owner of menalto cleaners. police say he overcharged customers' credit cards, and between 2011 and 2014, stole almost $700,000. now, chance against smith include fraud, identity theft, even elder abuse. he is ñf ion dollars bail. the anniversary for sea lions. it was 25 years ago when the sea lions started making their home at the pier's k dock. now they're one of san francisco's biggest tourist attractions.

welcome back. a new year means new goals a. group of homeless women in the south bay are helping others achieve their goals. the group called the women's gathering place. organized by eileen hunter, who formed the group after meeting a homeless group on the bus. her dream is to eventually offer transitional housing for homeless women. the number of female chief executive officers at u.s. companies is actually surging. turnover among ceos in the u.s. reached a six-year high last year. that's according to a global consulting company. seventy percent of the men who left were replaced by women. the number of men replacing women in the top job dropped by 25%. the women are still significantly underrepresented will the only 5% of fortune 500 companies have women as chief executives. all right. time is 6:456789 let's check in now with tori campbell, see what's coming up

the visibility is awful. you can not see your hand in front of your face in some east bay locations. the north bay chp says, "there's enough fog around santa rosa, they also issued a warning for that as well. i'm not surprised. the fog, we'll get back to that in a second. this drive pattern looks ugly. seriously, we're not going to get much rain from this system coming in on the weekend. maybe santa rosa north. the problem is after that high pressure builds right back in. the model of choice, not that this means anything to some of you has been the canadian long-range model, and it builds a massive high pressure over us. the american version, the gfs, the european keep trying to bring in rain. it's not happening. . i have to go with the hottest model of choice. no pun intended. that's the canadian model. there might be a little light rain to the north. folks in mendocino county, lake

county. today identity temperatures fog, north bay valley. there's still some peninsula south bay. nothing compared to what's in the east bay. upper 30s for some, 0s for others. everyone's pretty close. even the high elevations in the 40s, petaluma, fog, 39 degrees. lake port 37. there's a lot of 30s popping up. that fog and 30s, man that's a cold pattern. system weakening, moving to the north. it will drag across high cloud. mostly cloudy to the north. hazy skies. i say "fair." you know what i mean by that. thick morning fog. some of that might be slow to burn off. 0s, 6 0s, temps coming down. a slight component of an easterly breeze. we're losing that. not as strong as it was. oakly, ant i don't care, brentwood. rocket, martinez, benicia, going to be a cold pattern. it was warmer couple days ago. >> . >> little better south bay, but low to mid-60s, and i been really nice on the coast.

people in oakland are stunned that two people were robbed after they were involved in a traffic accident. now, investigators say 25-year- old greg lowry was riding his bike. he may have run a red light. an 81-year-old man in a pickup truck hit lowry. then he stopped to help him. witnesses say a crowd formed around them, and both men's wall etc. were stolen. now people are upset about this, but at least one man says poverty and homelessness, well, it can change people. >> if you don't have a resource, then you see a resource all of the sudden just right in front of your face, that's what you're
