people to hold him accountable for the city's successes and failures. new at 6:00, david stevenson takes a closer look at the plans ed lee has to protect middle class housing. >> the mayor said housing is his number one priority and that the prosperity that's come to the city has meant financial anxiety for a lot of families and residents here. he unveiled measures he says will hopefully keep a lot of them from having to move out. >> reporter: san francisco native charles leung doesn't want to leave the city. >> we put in our offer. we got outbid easily. >> reporter: the accountant is struggling to find a home he can afford with the average single family home priced at $1.4 million. the numbers for him just don't make sense. >> i think you need to make at least $200,000 or more to even begin to consider getting an average home here. >> reporter: we need -- >> we need to do more to help our middle class and porous

residents trapped in dilapidated public housing. >> reporter: in his state of the city address today the mayor said he wants to make sure families can afford to live in a red hot housing market. >> i understand these times of prosperity are also times of anxiety. >> reporter: the mayor unveiled a plan that includes more funds for rent support and programs to help tenants buy rent controlled buildings. there's also $100 million more in funds to help moderate and middle income homebuyers make down payments. the mayor hopes to reform the state's ellis act. and create more middle class housing on surplus public land. >> i know that's what my family worries about whether we can stay and afford to live here in san francisco. >> reporter: nicole banks introduced the mayor this morning. the mother of four earned bachelor's and master's degrees while living in an affordable housing unit. she said she's seen long time friends leave for antioch or fairfield as san francisco housing prices have skyrocketed. >> one bedroom is like $2,000.

nobody has 2,000 to pay for a one-bedroom or even a studio. >> the mayor says he'll place an affordable housing bond on the november ballot and will encourage private companies and philanthropic organizations to invest in affordable housing in san francisco. a warning tonight for people who take b.a.r.t. to work. a protest is planned for the morning commute and it will target one of b.a.r.t.'s busiest stations, the montgomery street station in san francisco. that could turn the morning commute in to a huge mess. tom vacar live there now with the unusual item that protesters are being asked to bring along with them. >> very strange. because it involves spoons. lots and lots of spoons. but why? >> reporter: the online poster says the protest will center around three demands. one, dropping all charges against the 14 protesters arrested last

november when they shut down the west oakland b.a.r.t. station and causing widespread chaos. two, the disbandment of the entire b.a.r.t. police agency. three, discount fares for low income riders. >> public safety is our main concern. that's why we're taking a look at friday morning and making sure we're prepared to do whatever it takes to keep people safe. >> reporter: oddly protesters are being asked to bring a metal spoon with them for reasons yet undisclosed. protesters used spoons in ferguson, missouri to make attention getting if not ear splitting noise but protesters can make noise with lots of things. >> i think it's more about the noise factor. kind of just making a statement. i really don't think they're trying to really cause any harm. >> reporter: another rider is not so sure. >> this whole situation can be a little dangerous because you can sharpen that metal and make it in to a weapon also. so i don't get the spoon thing. >> when you consider the

organizers are asking protesters to bring a metal spoon the worst case scenario involves this. the third rail. throw enough spoons on there you can actually close the circuit and short the entire system. there were online posts specifically discussing the high power rail issue which they say is extremely dangerous and explosively so. >> protecting b.a.r.t. property which is the public property, the taxpayers pay for this infrastructure and our police are prepared to protect it. >> sadly we've seen with many otherwise peaceful protests that some of the anarchists come in hell bent on doing damage, perhaps even with spoons. tom vacar, channel 2 news. richmond police say a patrol officer shot a man in self-defense this afternoon after that man pulled out a gun. that man right now is in critical condition tonight. the incident happened on nevine avenue. the officer noticed

something suspicious and tried to speak with the man. police say that's when the man pulled out a semi automatic pistol with an extended magazine. the officer fired several shots. they say the suspect was also carrying methamphetamine and marijuana. the contra costa district attorney's office has now taken over the investigation. a judge today revoked singer chris brown's probation following that concert in san jose where five people were shot. the judge said that brown's probation does not allow him to travel outside of los angeles county. brown will remain free though until a hearing in march. his attorney says the judge's office incorrectly advised brown that he didn't need permission to travel for the show. the judge ordered probation officials to investigate the san jose shooting and look in to whether brown was involved in any way. the 49ers introduced their new head coach today. he's a big departure from jim harbaugh. scott reiss spoke with him

one-on-one. >> yes julie a new era is upon us. we're about two and a half weeks removed from the drama of jim harbaugh's exodus, and now enter jim tomsula. same first name. same love and passion for football. that's pretty much where the similarities end. tomsula has spent the last eight seasons as defensive line coach for the 49ers. this is a big step up in responsibility. i asked the coach about the process of his promotion. >> it's an advantage when you have worked with the roster. so when you get in to that part of it and the growth and where you're heading with the roster, it's obviously easier to talk about. it was a normal interview situation and i felt like i made the right decision. >> along those lines, how do you balance the blessings of continuity with the need to change some things and put your

stamp on this program? >> well, this is football. this is the world of football. so there's tough things that happen every day and there's great things. and decisions are made on both sides of the aisle. when those decisions are made, everybody moves forward from there. >> what about your philosophy in terms of xs and os and how you go about coaching a football team? >> philosophy on xs and os, let's make sure the xs and os fit the player. let's make sure the players fit the xs and os. >> just your relationship with the guys, a lot of these guys obviously will be back next season and they speak very highly of you. >> the guys in the locker room? >> the players. >> they like you. >> this locker room is tremendous. this is a fantastic

team. fantastic group of guys. guys that are fired up. guys that want to win and compete. they're edgy. they're excited. they excite you. >> there's little question that jim tomsula is a man of the people. to it way back in the day he was a graduate assistant at his alma mater in north carolina. times were a little tight so he sent his family to live with relatives in florida and he lived in the back of his red cadillac for a while with his dog his cat the litter box, whole 9 yards. he did odd jobs, among which cleaning out a parking lot outside a pigly wiggly grocery store. he's certainly been at the bottom. now he's at the top as the new head coach of the san francisco 49ers. reporting live in santa clara, scott reiss. >> we'll check in with sports director in a little bit. the two men who just completed a historic free climb up the face of yosemite's el

capitan spoke today for the first time about how they made it through 19 grueling days. 30-year-old kevin jorgeson of santa rosa and tommy caldwell of colorado are the first people to free climb straight up the dawn wall using only a rope for safety. their family and friends celebrated when the two climbers reached the summit yesterday afternoon and today the climbers spoke about a quote, surreal accomplishment that was six years in the making. >> i never thought rock climbing could garner so much attention from the world. it's kind of crazy and a little uncomfortable. i'd love to turn all that attention right back around to everyone that is inspired by this project and encourage them to find their own dawn wall. >> jorgeson also showed off his fingertips which he said were in pretty good shape despite the nearly three-week climb. the climbers said they spent a lot of time training to build up endurance and also had plenty of

ibuprofen on hand. the smell of love is in the air but it's not a pleasant odor. >> some call it the next big thing in high tech. why is google going to stop selling google glass in a matter of days? >> dense fog advisories right now in the central valley. that's going to bleed in to the bay area late tonight. dense fog in your forecast. >> checking in right now on your thursday evening commute many places are doing well tonight but the drive along interstate 880 is a little slow going at this hour. >> now the e shore freeway always backed up and that's again the case tonight. this is i-80 through berkeley. you can see just how slow that drive is.

this incredible emergency plane landing right on the hudson river in new york. it's often called the miracle on the hudson. a flock of geese took out the plane's engine so bay area pilot sullenburger had no chance but to try to land right on the water. the plane skidded right across the top of the water before coming to a stop. everyone survived and was evacuated before the plane ended up sinking. we're learning more tonight about what went wrong when a woman drove straight in to that macy's store at a newark mall, making it actually 50 feet inside the store before the car came to a stop. ktvu spoke to the family of the 67-year-old woman today. they tell us she's battling ovarian cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. they say she didn't feel well last night got distracted and may have pressed the gas instead of the brake. six people were hurt. one critically. although we're told he is doing better today. police say their investigation so far reflects what the family is saying, that the driver's

medical condition is what caused that crash. four silicon valley giants agreed to pay millions in a lawsuit alleging they blocked workers from seeking higher paying jobs. apple, intel adobe have filed an agreement to pay $415 million to end the class action lawsuit. the suit alleges the companies agreed not to recruit each other's employees from 2005-09. a settlement would impact some 60,000 workers. a federal judge rejected a $324 million settlement a few months ago calling that offer inadequate. new at 6:00, skunks have a strong and distinct smell and apparently it's even stronger during skunk mating season. they're getting a lot of calls about how to kindly move those skunks along. >> love stinks. that's because december through february is

skunk mating season. that smell in the air is the male spraying each other as they fight for the female's attention and females spraying off males who don't suit her. all that perfume in the air is leading to a lot more calls at the wild care center asking for help. >> reporter: in bay area backyards, maybe even yours guests are making themselves at home. >> somebody was actively digging it up, not caring where they put it, forming a little bit of a pile. that's how we knew this was definitely a skunk. >> reporter: skunks are messy kind of cute, and this time of year there's that smell in the air. >> it is. love is in the air. so skunks are mating now. >> reporter: we're right in the middle of it, which means the wild care center in san rafael is getting more calls about skunks. if you don't share her love for pepe le pew, grab a

newspaper and put it in a hole and see if the animal moves it. or use starch. spread enough so you can see footprints. >> you don't need to be a game expert to know something is going in and out. >> reporter: close all garbage cans and make the environment uncomfortable for unwanted guests. >> anything from flood lights to loud radio to disturbing smells. you can do something like ammonia soaped rags. >> what's a disturbing smell for a skunk? [ laughter ] >> ammonia-soaked rags can be disturbing and annoying. >> reporter: the drought is disturbing things a bit too. it's making the length of mating seasons a little less predictable. the center has already seen changes with abandoned baby raccoons showing up very late in the season. it won't be long before broken winged birds are sharing exam room time with nat's favorite

animal. >> of course i've been sprayed. >> most people don't like the smell of skunk spray but the skunks eat slugs snails, mice, and rats, and i don't know many people who like any of those in their homes either. >> i did not know that. goog le is going to stop selling google glass until it can come up with a better and more affordable version. the mountain view tech giant has put in a two-year moratorium on selling google glass. the sales will be stopped as of next monday. google glass is connected to the internet. they cost $1500 a piece and they've been criticized for creating privacy concerns for those who aren't wearing them. an east bay couple has quite the story to tell about the birth of their newborn baby. this is little gabriel resting comfortably. that's not where he was born. gabriel made his debut monday morning in the car on the shoulder of highway 24

and lafayette. >> i ran over to the passenger's seat, opened the door started positioning her this way. >> it was like, oh, my god. i can't believe this. >> it hit me like oh, my god i can't believe i delivered my own son. that's surreal. >> a few minutes later the father got back in to the driver's seat and drove his wife and new baby to the hospital. gabriel weighed in at 6 pounds 7 ounces and tonight the family says mom dad and baby are all doing great. it feels like tommy knew right what to do. ran around, positioned her bang bang, bam. there's a baby. >> it's amazing the things you can do when you have no choice. she needed her husband and boy he came through big time right there. let's bring in chief meteorologist bill martin to talk about our weather. isn't that story great? >> it's a great story. makes everybody smile . we have plenty of clouds out there today. dense fog advisories remain in effect. didn't get that warm today especially in the central

valley because of all the fog. i've got low visibilities down in the modesto area down toward fresno and stockton. if you're traveling out there you see the radar spinning. this is a moist warmer atmosphere. the radar is picking up stuff here. i'm not getting reports of any of this hitting the ground. if it was it might be some drizzle but i suspect it's the radar picking up on returns that are not necessarily accurate. here's what the fog looks like down around hanford. visibility is down about a quarter of a mile and up north toward modesto the fog is going to fill in fast tonight because it never went away last night. that fog with those slight easterly winds will bleed in to our area overnight. just like this morning bay bridge golden gate bridge, we have fog on a lot of parts of the bay area. your morning commute will be hampered most likely by fog we saw this morning. not just in the north bay but south bay east bay, and big valley as well. dense fog advisory possible again tomorrow morning for parts of the bay

area. that's really impacting folks who are traveling in the earliest hours. if you're traveling around 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 in the morning that's usually when the fog is right down on the deck. tonight could be pretty bad because of the fog already in the central valley. rain next five days. wouldn't that put us over the top? we've got that kind of rain, san jose would be close to 100% of rainfall average. next five days crescent city, not that far north. it doesn't take much for the jet stream to shift south. it's game on for us. that's not going to happen. next five days rain stays just north of the area and we stay mostly dry. it's a very productive wet pattern for northern california and for seattle and washington. has been that way really for the last -- especially seattle and up in oregon for the last week or so, last few weeks. the whole time we've been dry they've been getting their dose of rain. high pressure stays in control. the rain that moves in here or chance of showers that

interviewed several coaches and it turns out the man they wanted right in their own backyard. been with the team since 2007. that of course as you probably know by now jim tomsula introduced on the far left. jed york on the right hand side. they said they wanted a man with a lot of humility and i think that characterizes what we saw today in the press conference, plain speaker, puts it out there, man of the people. here's a sampling of what he and some of his soon to be mates on the 49ers had to say. >> it's fun when it's rolling. and you get the boys and you're rolling. it's fun. and it's a allowed to be. yeah, it's worked, it's a job. i get all that. but it's the game of football. >> i'm happy for him. being on the defensive side i've created a relationship with coach tomsula. he's always had my back since when i first came.

even after a big loss, hurtful loss he's one of those coaches that walk around and make sure we keep our head high. >> i just know with coach tomsula, all the respect the guys have for him. he gets -- people talk about him being a motivator and a teacher. he gets that reaction. they listen to him and love to play for him. >> all the players really like him but here's a little fan reaction. we hired tomsula for continuity yet we lost our entire coaching staff yep makes sense. another fan says did anybody else see the puppet streams on tomsula? just checking. bad decisions there back to school. so a little bit of what you'd call mixed reaction from the fans. he's an affable guy but as i said earlier, all that matters is how
