a warning tonight for b.a.r.t. commuters. protesters are planning to disrupt tomorrow's commute. so why are they urging everyone to bring spoons? good evening everyone i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. a commuter alert for b.a.r.t. riders. protesters are vowing to disrupt service and targeting one of b.a.r.t.'s busiest stations. ken pritchett is live now in san francisco where fliers publicizing the protest urged people to bring spoons. and ken why spoons? >> >> reporter: well, that is unclear. there was that posting on a website announcing this event and it said bring metal spoons

and in parenthesis it says you will find out why. they say if they are removed from that station they will move to another station for the morning commute. the madero station is one of the busiest on the b.a.r.t. system. at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow it could be shut down. this flier is calling for a protest on the platform for what they call police -- >> i think it's a little disrespectful for the the people who work downtown because we come down here to work. we're not involved even though we would want to be involved. >> reporter: we found b.a.r.t. riders both concerned and understanding about the timing of the event. >> i guess i will probably still take the b.a.r.t. because i don't really know another way to get into the

city. >> you've got to do something to attract attention to the cause, right. nobody pays attention now unless it's disruptive. >> reporter: on the flier there's a group of demands including the charges be dropped on protesters at the west oakland station. >> i think that's a lot of nerve. you are going to have a protest which is fine. but when you do that you expect to be charged with something, probably. >> reporter: the flier also asks protesters to bring metal spoons but it is not clear why. possibly to make noise or to somehow disrupt service. b.a.r.t. spokesperson jim allen says b.a.r.t. is prepared to protect property. >> top priority is passenger safety. so we want to make sure everyone is safe. so b.a.r.t.

employees will be out. >> reporter: it's the start of what is being called a weekend of action just in time for this martin luther king weekend. >> ken, thank you. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage. ktvu morning news and mornings on 2 will be monitoring that protest and keep you updated on how it affects the friday commute. now to richmond where police say a suspect who was shot by an officer today was carrying drugs, and a semi automatic weapon that had an illegal extended magazine. the shooting happened at nevin and 31st around 1:30. that man is in critical condition. police say the officer tried to speak to the men because he noticed something suspicious about him. that's when the man pulled out a semi automatic handgun with an extended magazine. the officer fired several shots. >> the officer chose to defend himself by shooting the suspect and that was an absolutely split second decision the officer made. >> reporter: the suspect was also carrying a bag full of meth and several bags of

marijuana. the contra costa county district attorney's office is now in charge of the investigation. a $3,000 drone owned by san francisco rec and park has been stolen from the trunk of a worker's car. the drone was a phantom probe 2. the county acquired the drone to do aerial checks on trees and facilities. it was used only once and put away until the city came up with guidelines on using the drone now it's gone. the san francisco 49ers introduce their new head coach this afternoon at team headquarters. he said he was proud and thankful for the opportunity. fred ibanez is joins us now. today was different than the announcement of harbaugh. >> today was almost defensive

changed. water officials announced today we are in another drought year. they say key reservoirs are everyone lower than this time last year. however last month's rain did help. today the state water project said it would be able to provide more water to regional suppliers this year than it did last year. tomorrow has been designated another spare the air day in the bay area due to the dry stagnant air. that means no wood burning inside or outside unless it's your only source of heat. violators could be fined. there's rain in the north. you have showers going on, those showers are going to continue as we go into the next few hours or so. let me mix my microphone here. you can see the radar spinning. it's all going to be to the northover us. that's a drag because we really need the rain and it's hot going -- it's not going to happen. we do see some returns but it's

watch out, check out this surveillance video of a driver trying to get his car washed in sacramento. you see the employee running there next to the car and that car isn't slowing down. the employee inside the car wash putting up her hand signaling for that 94-year-old driver to stop but the car goes flying through at 40 miles per hour causing up to $100,000 in damage. the car finally crashed into a fence on the other side. the elderly driver apparently couldn't take his foot off the gas. after a long battle a new safeway store is opening on college avenue in oakland's rock ridge neighborhood. tonight's grand opening even featured a band. the safeway store is enormous with more than 45,000 square feet of space. it's open 24 hours and has rooftop parking. safeway spent years trying to

obtain a building permit until it's design changes satisfied neighbors and community groups. this is incredible. it has happened again, another baby born on highway 24 in contra costa county. the chp posted this picture of what they're now calling the miracle highway. the latest birth happened a couple of hours ago during the evening commute. the proud new dad pulled over to the shoulder near interstate 680 and his wife gave birth to a healthy baby boy and we're told that mom, dad and baby are doing just fine. this is the second birth on highway 24 in just the past two days. ktvu's rob roth spoke to the first set of parents who's son was delivered right there on the shoulder of the road yesterday morning. >> it is said that all babies are miracles. >> all right. >> but that's especially true in the case of little gabriel just ask his parents. >> you know i looked down at him and it's just amazing. >> reporter: gabriel all 6 pounds and seven ounces was resting fine with his mom and

dad. but the hospital is not where he was born. the story of his arrival begins yesterday morning when his mother was having labor pains at home in el cebrante. so they got in their toyota for the half hour ride to the hospital in walnut creek. >> my water broke five minutes later. and it was just, it was on. >> half way there just past the alkalani, she knew something was wrong. there was not enough time for paramedics to get there. so there on the shoulder of highway 24 during morning rush hour it was time for tommy amazuti a computer engineer to deliver his son. >> i ran over to the passenger's seat. opened the door, started positioning her this way. >> i said i didn't believe this. >> reporter: mom pushed and dad caught the baby when he came

a collision between a train and a car on caltrain tracks on the peninsula caused mayor delays during tonight's evening commute. caltrans says a southbound train hit an occupied car on the tracks just before 6:00. all train service was stopped for about an hour and it wasn't fully restored until after 8:00 p.m. the san mateo county sheriff's department say the people in the car were able to get out before it was hit and fortunately no one was hurt. a woman from the north bay, she is on a serious mission here to try and reunite a lost camera with its rightful owner. >> she found that camera while on vacation. now you can call her a mom on a mission. new at 10:00, debora villalon is live in santa rosa with what she's doing to reunite the go prowith whoever owns it wherever they are.

closing argumenting are expected tomorrow in the trial of a bay area teacher accused of 22 counts of molestation. he's been retried on charges he molested several male students at wood side elementary school. today he testified that any time he patted a student on the head or shoulder it was to reassure or calm that student. if convicted he could be sentenced to life in prison. we're learning more tonight about the driver of a car who plowed right into a macy's store in newark. several people were injured. anne rubin spoke to the woman's family about what may have gone wrong. >> i thought it was all going to be closed up because it was all taped up this morning. >> reporter: it was yesterday

that a woman slammed into the shopping center. we spoke to that woman's family at lenght about what happened. they say the driver is battling ovarian cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. they believe that as she was waiting for her grandson to come out of the store, she startedded feeling unwell. >> at the time everyone is out of the hospital except one male. >> reporter: that man's condition improved today and that their condition is the reason for the crash. >> we don't anticipate any arrest. we think that's going to be the cause. >> reporter: the driver's daughter describes her as an independent woman, someone who picked up the children from school and drove to chemotherapy. the family says that will now change. >> it's terrible. you hope for the best. >> reporter: still shoppers say it could have been worse. sue kumar was at macy's at the

gunfire and explosions erupted during a police raid today on a suspected terrorist spell in belgium. authorities said the men were planning attacks on police stations in a matter of hours or just days. this was one of 10 raids around belgium of suspected extremists who had returned from syria with instructions for attacks. as of midnight traveling to cuba from the u.s. will be easier because of new rules from the obama administration. the u.s. is no longer requiring special permits for travel as long as the visit is for educational, cultural or religious reasons. the change comes days after cuba released 53 political prisoners. it's also a normalization of relations that obama announced last month bringing a 50 year

no sign of -- a for sale sign was now posted outside of mcdonald's house. mcdonald got in trouble with the niners twice. the team released him last month following a separate investigation of sexual assault. the story of a dog stolen in tracy three years ago came to a happy and emotional end in oakland today. ian mcnesby, his wife and children were reunited with their dog hannah today at the oakland animal services. hannah was picked up as a stray last friday and a microchip helped shelter workers identify her. the family was overjoyed to get a phone call that hannah had been found. he says it's also tough to see her in such poor condition. >> we have already said we're going to stay here. yeah. spoil her as much as we can. we're probably going to keep her in the house for a little bit, and kind of hold on to her

controversial bullet train. still rain in the west coast but not for us. a nice stream of moisture streaming in mainly to northern california. and again, i point out how close it is to our area. these areas north of this line are going to see over 3-inches of rain. perhaps 5-inches of rain up in crescent city over the next few days and we are, down here where there's just a lot of clouds. i have a lot of fog now showing up in the central valley. i have fog showing up around napa. a little bit around the santa rosa area. now beginning to show up in the moraga area. there's the rain in the eureka area. that's real rain, they're getting it and we're not. here is how it breaks down. this shows you how tenuous the rains are. that's just what we need right now. it's not what we're going to get. we're going to get more fog. overnight lows are going to be
