let's look at storm tracker 2, we're waking up with a mix of sun and clouds. we're not seeing anything falling this morning. santa rosa picked up a few 100ths yesterday and we'll continue this pattern as we get into the weekend. fog out in this morning, concord is reporting visibility down to 2.5 miles. santa rosa it's thick, down to a half-hour and livermore the visibility is okay. as we get through the morning hours we have fog to deal with and clouds, and temperatures are in the low 50s and high 40s. livermore you're waking up at 51 and san jose is 49. the temperatures are not bad, but it's a cloudy one out there. there's a slight chance of scattered showers passing over the north bay. it's 63 for oakland, 65 in redwood city, and 61 in concord and into the south bay 67 degrees for morgan hill. as we get into the holiday weekend not a lot of change in

the forecast. it's another spare the air day, we'll look at the air quality coming up. new this morning, caltrans is wrapping up work on the bridge. crews are putting sealanst on the upper deck. they tried to repair cracks between spear and belle streets by installing plates over them. that work caused massive traffic jams last october. they're using this rapid setting concrete and replacing it. >> this is state of the art using the best silicone elements that we have, it's a blend of them. it will last 79 years, we'll see how long these last. >> people driving through the bridge late at night will see the workers on the span doing their work.

they'll be on the underside and the upper side of the span through march. a call to police was about a man threatening someone with a knife. it was on the interstate, and they believe it started around the corner on great salt lake corridor. >> there were two guys arguing and the one guy who was working at the house that's empty kept saying, get away from me, man, get away if me. >> the caller told us there was a man walking in the neighborhood armed with a large knife and possibly going after two individuals. >> that police spokeswoman said three officers responded to the scene and saw the man with the knife and after fronting him opened fire. they're interviewing officers and looking for witness who is may have been in the area at the time. civil rights john burris

says he intends to file a suit against the city of richmond. it stems from a police shooting in september that killed 24- year-old richard perez. he testified that the shooting happened during a struggle when the man tried to grab the officer's gun. he put his hands up before the shooting and he claims the officer was the aggressor. police protestors are using dr. martin luther king, jr. holiday to step up their police brutality. [ chanting ] >> you're looking at video from last night. dozens of protestors protested outside of the mission police station. they were preventing demonstrators from going into the station, protestors held signs accusing police of racism

and promoting displacement. giving property to wealthy people and displacing family. protestors there, you can see took spoons and banged them against the metal disrupting forces. they forced bart to close stations. they are trying to claim martin luther king's action. people staged a protest on friday. there are a couple of rallies against bart and protests against brutality. one is at bart station in san francisco and one is at the fruit maz a and a march afterwards. they're killed in the line of duty, who will attend the state

of the union address. a man was killed during a wild crime spree. she channeled her loss to start a foundation aimed at improving relationships between law enforcement and the public. she has been invitedded as a guest at the state of the union address. >> i would hope that he would address the community that needs to be built involving the law enforcement in the community. and he would support my view law enforcement and the community to work together. >> he wants to reform immigration policies. president obama provided a glimpse of his speech on tuesday night. >> our job now is to make sure that every american feels that they're a part of our country's come back. that's what i'll focus on in my

state of the union, how to build on our momentum with rising wages and better incomes and a rising middle class. >> he wants support for his program to raise the minimum wage and he wants congress to pay the healthy families act which has paid sick leave for workers every year, and it will air at 6:00 on tuesday night. you see student athletes in the classroom. they're going to have a bonus for people with academics and athletes, they must establish a minimal level of academic performance that each sports team must reach. that policy is significant. some coaches receive millions of dollars in bonus assent this

a father and son are ending a tradition that they started 27 years ago. they've been selling newspapers at the same spot for more than two decades. we're live in the sunset district. this will be the last weekend for them. >> reporter: we're at 27 and irving in san francisco. there's a lot of activity happening. across the street you can see the produce workers getting the stands ready at the market. there are plenty of customers inside getting coffee and doughnuts. there's another business on the street corner that has been here for almost three seconds decades. they're ending their r they've been selling the san francisco chronicle and other newspapers and they're calling it quits. >> we're not going to do street sales in the neighborhoods, they're going to be keeping

downtown, the kiosks and along market streets, but they say in the outlying areas they're going to be cutting those as of this weekend. >> this is something you started doing when you were ten years old selling newspapers on the street? >> yes. i grew up up the block and my family is up the block. i went to school up there. i sold candy as a fundraiser, i sold the candy with the guy selling newspapers here. and that guy works on 26th. do you want to take this job, and so i showed up the next week and ever since it's been a job. >> and you said decades ago there used to be hundreds of people like yourself selling papers on the street, but times have changed. >> a lot of people pick up the news through other means and there's a changing customer clientele. >> what will you miss most about this business? >> i will be missing the people, we met a lot of people

we've got gray skies around the bay area, a few scattered showers yesterday. we'll continue with this pattern and today is a spare the air day. as i mentioned a moment ago, we are waking up in the low 40s and 50s. you don't have the urge to light the fireplace, it's illegal unless you're exempt. in the central bay it's above that mark. if you have asthma or respiratory it could be bad for you, poor air quality for today. we have scattered showers falling over parts of northern california, from eureka to fort bragg. we have a very moist air in place. we won't see much rain out this unfortunately. a few passing showers for today, tomorrow a little bit of a better chance and i'll show you this here as we get into the saturday. a mix of clouds and sun today. we'll start at 5:00 this the afternoon. part of the north bay is cloudy, we have a mix of sun

. a space x rocket that brought supplies to the international space station crash landed and exploded after it ran out of hydraulic fluid minutes before it landed. they were hoping to reuse the rocket for future flights. they'll be making changes for the next launch which could happen sometime next month. well, seattle has figured out to -- a dog in seattle has figured out how to use the buses all by herself.

. time now 7:30, let's get you updated on the top stories we're following right now. civil rights attorney john burris plans to file suit against a police officer, a shooting that killed richard perez. there are rallies across the bay area as part of the martin luther king holiday. they have accused officers of racism, and caltran is putting the final touches on the project, crews spent several months fixing old joints. they hope the replacements will last as long as the original decades which lasted for 8 decades. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. >> rosemary, we'll have a look at the weather. normally everybody would be skiing this weekend.

is there even snow up there? >> it's icy at this point. it's been sometime since we've had snow. some areas are doing okay and some not so much. outdoors this morning, it's a mostly dry start. we have a soggy pattern in place. we have a few -- we have a foggy pattern in place. a mix of sun and clouds in store for the entire day. temperatures will be in the low 60s for most of us. not too bad. don't expect a lot of sunshine, we're waking up with fog, santa rosa reporting visibility down along halfway to 91. the visibility is poor in some areas. 51 in walnut creek, upper 40s to 50s along the bay. 50 degrees at half moon bay, and santa rosa you're check at

50 degrees. that's warmer than yesterday. this is not bad for the season. 48 for palo alto and into sunnyvale we have 51 degrees for saratoga. we have a mix of sun and clouds, mostly cloudy over the north bay and partly cloudy over the south bay. we have a mix of sun and clouds in the bay area. we'll put numbers on the screen and check on air quality coming up in a little bit. oakland police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened at 9:30 last night. it happened at 32nd and adeline streets, it's unclear what led up to the shooting, but no arrests have been made. we're learning about a couple getting killed. two schools were on lockdown. one of the victims was a 19- year-old alexis and he was with

her boyfriend with the shooting and he was also killed. it happened in near 185th and she grew up with grandmother and graduated from high school last june. >> i was, please, come home, she would be safer at home, this is not where my grand kids to be at in oakland. >> randolph met her boyfriend while she was working at a ups facility and she just started community college. they were both placed -- the schools were placed on lockdown for an hour. police have not released information about a suspect. the berkeley city council will be holding a meeting today about improving community and police communications, this will happen at adeline street, and they'll talk about the michael brown case in ferguson, missouri and how it affected the community here.

businesses and a number of people were arrested and businesses were vandalized. a father of a player is joining the search for a morgan hill teenager. she disappeared in march of 2012. they'll be a couple of other volunteers who will continue to search for lamar every saturday. his son logan organized a autographed signing event to raise money for the search effort. two men forced their way in through an iron gate and pretenned to be police officers. it happened in the engleside neighborhood. the homeowner didn't want to be identified, but he told us what happened. >> a kid knocked down the door, the door wasn't locked so they just opened it and they said this is a police officer stay where you're at. >> a spokeswoman for the san francisco police department said that the fact that they

posed as police officer is alarming, they didn't take off with anything or harm anyone. they realized the family was still inside the home. a san francisco fire station is open after two years. in downtown clayton, this was one of four stations that they closed in 2012 along with stations in pittsburg martinez and lafayette. the fire district decided to reopen station 11 because it's near wild line where a fire can spread quickly. >> geographically it's isolated, it's important not only from a fire standpoint, but from an ems standpoint as far as a paramedic getting on scene quickly. >> we have children and it feels safer to have them down the street rather than a few minutes. >> they're still deciding whether to reopen the other

swim team, she went on to graduate from harvard university. >> i think moving on with my life was the biggest gift. that's what impacted my motivations and made me go into medicine. >> she is developing an app to navigate the preand post surgery phases. she has helpful hints from her experience. >> you may not think, asking the school to give a top or bottom lock to minimize while they're recovering, to minimize the excessive amount of bending a child will have to do. >> it's great to watch a child come scared and fast forward ten years, she's put together and smart as can be woman and going to give back. >> the app will be released this spring. and they're going to address other diseases and conditions.

camp. >> that's quick, ten weeks. you finished off summer, three months, tell us what you were doing before you went to hack break? >> i was in public health and i wasn't doing anything related to software engineering. hi some experience with it through the graduate program. i as in public health because i wanted to make a difference in my community and i felt like we weren't really engaging technology the way that we could, and someone told me about hack bright and boot camps in general. i thought this might be a good fit for me. >> you liked computers, you like that kind of stuff? >> i didn't have -- i didn't groom programming, i didn't play videogames or anything, but you know, some statistical programming, i thought it was fun, i tried stuff online and i still liked it so -- >> was the course hard? >> it was very hard. it was very challenging, it was a lot of work. it was harder than my graduate

production. i know you do commercials, as well. >> um-hmm. >> what drove to you do this? >> for the past several years i have put on at least one big cabaret a year. i started out doing a fund raider every year for the leukemia-lymphoma society, starting off with the team in training, so i put my love of performance with my love of running and put the two together. so now i do more than one a year. i like making a show that is all my own. i like doing the production, and the behind the scenes stuff, putting it all together and working with the people i just adore. >> nothing is impossible is what you quote. >> yes. >> why is that there? what does it mean to you? >> well, your life is what you make of it. i don't think you can do anything -- i don't think -- you can do anything if you put your mind to it. it may be cliche, but i believe it to be true.

well, on some holidays our national park service likes to waive entrance fees. if a lot of people take advantage of the offer there could be problems. there is storm damage on highway 1 that remains closed at the 4.1-mile marker where it washed away. a new cutting edge wildlife center is in the works. the conservation for wildlife care will span across 170-acres on an abandoned area of the santa cruz mountains. the larry ellis foundation will pay for the $54 billion center. and this year marks the 25th anniversary of the sea lions calling pier 39 their home. they are one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city. 9million people make their way to the pee to see them and listen to them.

why have you decided to hang it up? >> well, people are doing street sales, but more now in the market streets and subways. it is time for us, as well, to move on and do other stuff. i used to be a writer for news and now i do mostly videos, so things change. >> reporter: so, every weekend for almost three decades either you or your dad have been out here in the neighborhood. what will you miss the most? >> i will miss seeing the people around. everybody that comes by want too talk about what they are up to or what is going -- want to talk about what they are up to, or what is going on and letting us know what is going on in their neighborhoods. i met everybody what comes out here on the street to politician that is come around every election time. so, you get everybody's story. there are tons of political gatherers on this corner, as well. you meet them and get all their

nights of protests in early december. people were arrested, business were vandalized and protestors and police officers were actually injured. >> this morning's meeting is a special city council meeting held back on december 16th. if it looks like a different location it is because it wasn't in council chambers. it was held in the middle school school because they expected a large crowd to attend. there were protestors and made demands, wanting the city to appoint an independent prosecutor to address police actions and they wanted the city to implement a new database that would detail everyone time police stopped someone and asked for better training of officers that handled protests. dozens of people spoke at the meeting and most talked of the events on december 6th. >> yes. hundreds of people gathered in berkeley to protest not indicting the ferguson, missouri police officer that shot and killed michael brown.

it began at the uc berkeley campus and expanded then all the way down to the downtown area. people smashed business windows and the freeway was shut down. police used tear gas to try to control the crowd. there were multiple reports of protestors that night and police officers. the mayor hopes the morning meeting will open dialogue between officers and citizens. a family in san francisco is on edge after two men forced their way into their home and snuck through an iron gate and once in pretended to be police officers. it happened in the engels neighborhood. the father and son didn't want to be identified, but the father agreed to tell us what happened. >> he kicked down the wooden door. the wooden door. the door wasn't locked. they just, you know, said i am a police officer. stay where you are at.
