told you about, we're going to get to that in just a minute. i want to show you the traffic today in general is lighter as you drive on 80 westbound, you can see it is only 18 minutes. we should have, we don't because it is a holiday, we don't have a big backup here at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see it, it looks like a sunday morning, usually we would be jam packed. if you have to go, at least you have that working for you. no major problems getting through as you drive through. southbound 680 at north bay, we had an earlier accident on the shoulder, as soon as they got it out of the lanes the traffic lightnd up. that is no longer a big issue for that commute. let's go back to the desk. all right. new this morning san francisco police are on the look out for two burglars who smashed a u- haul truck through a store in a neighborhood. we have a live look at the damage. >> reporter: talk about brazen,

they actually backed the u-haul truck up into the store, you can see the coats and jackets strewn all over the floor. it happened on north point street. police say the two men in bandannas rammed the truck through the store front and carried out the crime in just a few minutes. >> the suspects got out of the u-haul, ran inside, grabbed whatever merchandise they could find and pulled out and went towards that direction. police saw the suspect's truck several blocks away from the scene of the crime, but unable to catch the thieves. they are not sure how much merchandise was stolen, but police do have a partial plate, ag-135. they are looking at video to see if they can glean anymore news. time now, 6:03. today is martin luther king jr.

day. there are several events honoring the legacy of dr. king. this year, there are also protests where people are speaking out against police brutality and allegations. live in san francisco where some of the protesters, they've been demonstrating all night, good morning alex. >> the event that took place here in san francisco was called a sleep-in. this particular event was staged by advocates for the homeless here at the intersection of powell and market. we'll show you what the scene looked like, people lying down on the sidewalk, sleeping on the sidewalk since about 5:00 last night highlights issues of homelessness in the community. the message that everyone deserves the right to rest participants say the rights are trampled on because they are looking for a place to sleep. organizers say they are trying to pay tribute to dr. martin

luther king. his call for housing and income for the poorest americans. >> over demanding is a dignitied city-base solution which really invests in housing, invests in things like treatment, invests in the long- term needs that people have as opposed to just trying to figure out how to site them out of this. >> it has been a weekend full of demonstrations leading up to king day, it began with a take- over of three san francisco bart stations during the friday community. organizers were bringing attention to the issue of police brutality. and a demonstration in oakland, angry about the recent killings of unarmed black men. >> san francisco will be holding its annual martin luther king day march and festival. people will be gathering at the

caltrain stations and we expect that protesters may show up and interrupt that event later on this morning, they are expected to show up and demanding a meeting with the mayor, they want to discuss issues of police brutality. time is now 6:06. this morning in washington d.c., a ceremony honoring dr. king at the memorial that honors him. the mlk memorial. secretary of homeland security jeh johnson was there talking about dr. king's commitment to economic equality for all americans. in the final days of his life, dr. king went to memphis tennessee, not for a march, but to support a garbage workers strike for better wages and conditions. after his remark. johnson you see him there taking part in a where's laying

ceremony the memorial is on the national mall as well as memorials of abraham lincoln and george washington and franklin roosevelt. and people gathered at a church service for a discussion of raisism in america. >> a panel at the church talked at the current focus on the relationship between the african american community and the police. steven johnson, the uncle of brant, was at that event. he was shot by a police officer in 2009. johnson says he believes dr. martin luther king jr. would have been a leader in the black lives matter movement. >> i believe that if he was alive that he would have a lot to say about what's going on about you know, the system in itself and how all the work he put in at that time period hasn't really achieved to the

magnitude that he had hoped that it would achieved to. >> he also said he enjoys delivering his message to predominantly white audiences calling them game changers. the stars of the movie selma, they marched in selma, alabama in honor of dr. martin luther king's birthday. marching to the bridge, that's where police beat and tear gassed civil rights marchers. oprah produced the movie and said returning to selma alabama was an unforgettable experience. >> it was a great life experience, this would be one, seeing john legend sing bridge over troubled water and glory. that's something i will never forget. the movie selma shows a civil rights campaign leading up to the historic march.

back here in the bay area, word that san francisco going to beef up it fleets of ambulances. the examiner reports the city is going to buy 19 new ambulances and will hire extra paramedics this comes after they were under fire because of poor response times. all right. our time is 6:08. more than 100 birds here in the bay area covered up in something sticky and mysterious. the challenge that's facing animal rescuers in the east bay. but first, they've been called a modern day bonny and clyde. two teenagers were found after a string of crimes if four states. we are looking at a commute that's not much of one, fog may be an issue, it looks good as you head south. fog is an issue for some, that will be the big story this morning but the big story into the week could be record highs

. welcome back to the morning news, time, 6:12. this is a strange store, a progolfer not sure if he is going to play in the event, says he was robbed and beaten after missing the cut at a golf tournament in hawaii. the fbi is investigating this, look at this picture. 43-year-old robert allen says he was at a wine bar in honolulu, he became separated

from his friends. surveillance video shows him leaving with four people, but says he doesn't remember or know who they were. he says he was beaten, his wallet, cash, and cell phone were stolen. police in honolulu are investigating. the fbi is investigating gunfire outside joe biden's house. the shots came from a car that sped by the home in greenville which is a suburb of wilmington on saturday night. the vice president and his family were not home at the time. it is not clear whether any of the shots hit the home andsecret service did not find the driver. but they arrested another man who tried to drive around an office. and people rallying on the steps of the state capitol showing support for law enforcement. one 10-year-old son was there, said he is proud to support his dad. >> he is really brave to go out knowing it might be his very last day in uniform and it

might be his very last day on the job. >> the organizers say they wanted to share their appreciation for the police and share their support for the families of the 14 law enforcement offices killed in california last year. there were some tense moments right here. about 2 dozen anti-police protesters showed up, they tried to get into the rally but they were stopped by police. they weren't allowed in because they didn't have a permit. still you can hear the chant of the protesters from the podium. >> a kentucky teenager accused of going on a four-state crime spree will make his court appearance. they were captured early yesterday morning after leading police on a bonny and clyde- like chase. they were captured on wal-mart surveillance cameras last week. they were concerned with their increasingly bold behavior.

early yesterday morning officers spotted their stolen truck. >> they found the truck parked at pier park behind a restaurant there and they weren't sure if anyone was in it so they sent an unmarked car to look for it to see if anyone got in or out of it. they saw the brake lights come on that's when they called for multiple units. >> heys was on the run because of an arrest last year, and phillips will face charges in juvenile court as an accomplice. great football yesterday, and now the super bowl match up is set. the new englandpatriots will play the seattle seahawks. and when seattle's special teams recovered this onside kick, that set up a 24-yard touch down run from oakland's marshawn lynch. he is just incredible. seattle also got the two-point conversion, they took a 22-19 lead. the packers kicked a field goal, went to overtime, then

russell wilson hit germane at about a35-yard touch down, the seahawks win the championship, 28-22. it wasn't even close in the afc championship game. the patriots blew passed the colts, scored three rushing touch down. san mateo's tom brady will take them for a record, nfl record sixth time. that would give brady four super bowl rings, that puts him up there with terry bradshaw and joe montana. and super bowl xlix, february first in glendale, arizona. the other thing people are talking about this morning is this, they call it the flate gate. wondering if they use deflated balls. >> they've been accused of some other things.

. two people escaped injury after a car broke down and a bus slammed into it. you're taking a look right there, that's all that's left of this car, happened along the 91 freeway. his driver and passengers say the car's electrical system failed and they were forced to pull over in the carpool lane. that's when they noticed a tour bus coming up from behind them so they jumped over the center divide to avoid getting hit. >> we saw a big bus coming our way, so i just grabbed him and we got out and then we just turned. and the bus just took it and we turned. very, very smart, good quick thinking. the driver and passengers, they weren't hurt at all, five people did complain of minor

injuries but none has to be taken to the hospital. and boaters were stranded in the mud for three hours, their 17-foot long boat became stuck in shallow water saturday nightin the marina. a rescue team had to use smaller boats and was able to pull that boat out of the mud, there were no injuries. fire crews used boats and a jet ski to rescue a woman who fell off a cliff. that happened yesterday afternoon, they say the woman fell on to rocks and took rescue crews an hour to get to her and pull her to safety. we don't have any details about the injuries we do know she was not taken to the hospital. time is now 6:24. dozens of bay area famries are spending the day with their loved ones after being a part for months. lots of smiles, lots of cheers, hugs and kisses, coast guard

unit 312 spent nine months atguantanamo bay in cuba. there were emotional reunions as the group came home. michael last saw his daughter when she was just a couple of days old during a brief six- davis. we found out we were pregnant after he already left, i knew i was going to have to do the whole pregnancy all alone with my 2-year-old. >> that's a handful. beautiful kids. the security unit is made up of133 personnel. they specialize in antiterrorism and port security. they support missions all around the world. researchers say there are several clusters in the bay area where children are under immunized. they say it has found statistically significant hot beds in the east bay.

good computer guy, westbound bay bridge, our computer and pictures do not show any delays, that's taking you 10 minutes westbound getting into san francisco, if you have to go to work, a lot of people have the holiday, i know some people don't, this is a look at the san mateo bridge. don't just park and walk away, check, read the signs and make sure you put money in if appropriate. and traffic looks good, drive to the valley on 101 and 280 also in good shape. it is 6:31. let's go back to the desk. new this morning san francisco police are busy searching for two people responsible for a daring smash and grab burglary in the fisherman's wharf area. ktvu joining us live now, you can tell us how the suspects used a u-haul truck to steal that merchandise, tara. >> reporter: that's right.

and investigators are going to be pouring over the surveillance video from this store to try to get a better look at the vehicle that they've used to ram through the front of the store. they have a partial license plate, hoping to get a full license plate. they backed a white u-haul truck right through this store. there is shattered glass everywhere, coats and other outdoor gear strewn all over the floor, happened around a quarter to 4:00 this morning. police say the two men in bandannas rammed the truck in and got out what merchandise they could. >> units seen the van blocks away and tried to catch up to it, they were speeding away. the units were unable to like catch up to the van. >> and the partial license plate again is ag-135, police saw the suspect's truck several blocks away from the scene of the crime but they were unable

to catch them. live from san francisco, back to you. 6:32. also new this morning, police in san francisco investigating two suspicious fires. this is video we just got in from 19th and castro, that's where a truck was set on fire. just a couple of blocks away a home was also set on fire. this is all on the border of castro and noey valley neighborhoods. several suspicious fires have been started in that area over the past couple of months, we have a ktvu crew on the way to the latest fires they'll bring you a live report coming up at 7:00. volunteers at the international bird rescue center are working overtime trying to clean more than 100 birds covered in a mysterious gray substance. that was covered in al almeida's cove. they are having to skip their traditional cleaning method of using dish soap, they are

trying another approach using baking soda and vinegar to clean them. >> if we're not able to completely get it off the bird's feathers and get them rewaterproofed, they went make it through this event. >> dozens of birds have already died, the lucky ones who have survived will still need weeks of rehab. more birds are expected to be brought in, officials are trying to figure out what that substance is. you can get more details on the work being done to save those birds and get information on how you can help. go to our website and click on the web link session. passengers from oakland forced to make an emergency landing in san jose, they've now arrived in honolulu. flight 47 took off yesterday morning but diverted to jose international because there was a crack in the windshield. nobody was hurt, though. the passengers had to wait

until just before midnight to get on another plane. >> in the northeast, slick roads are being blamed for at least five deaths. rain and temperatures called a flash freeze on highways from maryland to new york. an 88-year-old woman was killed in connecticut when she hit a utility pole. in new jersey alone, icy roads have caused more than 400 crashes yesterday. take a close look now at this picture, unbelievable, yes, that is a man trapped there in that wreckage and he survived. he was driving his pick up truck on interstate 84 in oregon yesterday, he was in heavy fog and saw brake lights, but it was too late and crashed right into a jackknife big rig.

but that was not the end of it, there was another semi that came along and hit the bed of his truck and that caused it to fold, that's how he ended up sandwiched between those two trailers. >> i was just praying that you know, this can't be my time, just hoping that everything will be okay and that i'd be able to make it back to family and be taken care of. >> amazingly, the only part of his truck that actually remained intact was his driver's seat. and he only suffered a cut and a few scratches. officials say black ice caused that first big rig to crash. sheriff deputies arrested a man say a man attacked a woman with a wrench in the parking lot of the graden resort and casino. the woman was asleep in a car yesterday afternoon when a man jumped into the driver's seat and started attacking her.

security guards heard screaming, they chased the man away. he was arrested later after he went back to the parking lot to get his car. that suspect is identified as a 36-year-old man from daly city. the woman was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries. investigators say she'd been at the casino with her boyfriend, he was inside during that attack. police in walnut creek still out there searching for three people who robbed a couple on a residential street. it happened on walnut boulevard yesterday morning. the victim says two men and a women approached him. they believed one of them had a begun. the couple complied with the demands of the robbers and the suspects escaped in an older model white car. the walnut creek police say the three suspects may also be linked to an armed robbery in pleasant hill and a carjacking in concord. dangerous living conditions in a north bay apartment complex are leading to an

investigation or legal action against the property owners. according to the press democrat 9 families who live at the hone avenue apartment building have been told to leave by tomorrow morning. inspectors say the buildings are plagued with mold, you can see pictures of it there, rats and other unsafe conditions. the city of santa rosa notified the property owners last january but one year later, those problems have not been fixed now lawyers representing the tenants are seeking financial damages for alleged emotional and physical harm. all right. governor brown is setting sites on huge debt. coming up the deal he is hoping to make with unions over the state's unfunded health care benefits. and a bittersweet celebration in the south bay, the annual mlk tradition that comes to an end today. good morning. we are looking at a commute now where traffic is going to be a

this is from you stream, this is related to the black lives matter protest, you can see a lot of people out there, you can see it is quite a scene. ktvu bryon flores is also there outside the mayor's house. he is getting all the details. he'll bring us a live report coming up during mornings on two. time is 6:41. protests in oakland over the king day holiday weekend ended with several arrests. four people were arrested last night on a variety of charges including assaults on police officers. demonstrators shut down the bart station before marching onto downtown oakland. the protest ingathered at the plaza. this is just one of several protests over the weekend, against allegations of police brutality. well, this is martin luther king jr. day, one of the long time traditions is the freedom train. this morning the last run of the last remaining freedom train in the country pulls out

of san jose's station. the trip has operated for 32 years, but now organizers say decline in interest and diminishing funds is going to shut down the train after this year's trip. it is the rough equivalent of the march to the state capitol 50 years ago. we're going to have more on the end of this tradition coming up at 7:00. time now 6:43. a very special museum is offering free admission today, marking the martin luther king day holiday. 2,000 people are expected to visit the museum in san francisco. he'll be talking about the movie selma. the museum also as a wonderful collection of art inspired by

temperatures are mild to warm, if you thought my goodness, what happened to that cold air over night? well it is in the 50s now, so not so cold. mist, drizzle some of that drizzle has accumulated to a couple hundreds. king tides, highest today. we also get another round in february but today and tomorrow so there could be minor coastal beach flooding keep that in mind, the ocean is busy that's for sure. forecast calls far lot of fog and sunny. high clouds, then the end of this week looks dry, record- setting warm by the weekend high pressure builds in and almost spring-like temperatures will settle in and that could be 70s, mid-70s to 80s near the coast. it sure looks like it. cloudy to mostly cloudy, the drizzle again, looks like a lot of that might is ended. i know there is some out there. dense fog, low visibility along

with the drizzle, mostly sunny. higher clouds are so much moisture in the air, that's why the humidity factor is high, but still a dry forecast except for that drizzle. partly to mostly sunny and warmer as we head towards the end of the week. 50s on your temps, a couple 40s but not many. a lot of low 50s, there is an easternly breeze what's new. livermore, heyward, sfo has a breeze, not that cold in the mountains either, upper 30s to 40s, 50s for many to san diego. you can see the higher clouds getting out of the picture quick. cloudy, fog, drizzle, 50s on the lows, muggy to humid. and the afternoon, sun pretty much what we had yesterday. if you can get through that fog get the sun early enough, add a couple degrees to this. there will be mild, 54, 55 for some. only out towards here, upper 50s, low 60s.
