thousands celebrating the legacy of dr. martin luther king, junior. hundreds of people marched across the lefty oduel bridge in san francisco to commemorate the crossing of the edmund pet edmund pettus bridge in selma. and newschopper2 is over the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station in oakland. these are live pictures where a large guard is gathered. organizers of this march say they want to connect the dots between police use of force and economic violence that they say faces the black community in east oakland on a regular basis. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. with all. mlk events going on today, brian flores is at san francisco's yerba buena gardens where the marchers in san francisco are gathering for an mlk festival and joins us live. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: many of those

marchers are making their way here. i just spoke with san francisco police who expect 4,000 people to be here throughout the afternoon to remember dr. king's legacy. many people took the time this morning to hear and see the words spoken to dr. king at the memorial at yerba buena gardens. his speech from 1963 on the steps of lincoln memorial was played through the speakers at the memorial in san francisco. many civic leaders are expected to be here. we spoke with people this morning, asked them considering the recent protests, some of it violent what would dr. king say about all of this. here's what they had to say. >> he would be outrageous at some of the things that's happened and why changes haven't been properly done as far as the police go. we also need police training so they can do their job better. >> his treatment is very much

alive. but we haven't achieved the full dream because we have so many people that -- without the american dream buying a home getting good jobs and i think dr. king would be dissatisfied where we are right now. >> reporter: meantime, nearby at the metrion, ed lee spoke at the labor and community breakfast. he was joined there by nancy pelosi as well as a group of young protesters with the group black lives matter who are trying to get the mayor's attention on what they say is the militarization of police. we spoke with mayor lee, and he says he supports the protesters. >> i think protesters are one aspect of it but i also think our police department working with them, working with the board of supervisors, making sure people are safe as well as enjoying themselves and having a very strong future. >> reporter: mayor lee will be

joining 50 school kids to watch "selma" at a nearby theater. he will talk to them about the civil rights movement. as we take it back out here live, a lot of people making their way from that caltrain station. we should mention there is a pretty heavy police presence as well here. but again, festivities go from now until 5:00 this afternoon here in san francisco and other parts of the bay area. back to you. >> thank you. and in oakland, about 40 protesters gathered outside of the home of oakland mayor libby schaaf as part of a day of protests and political action on martin luther king day. >> black lives matter! black lives matter! >> they call this protest wakeup, libby. they say they are asking which side the mayor is on. the protesters or the police department? organizers are unhappy the mayor spent her first day in office this month with the oakland police d. protesters say that sent a message to

some. >> we feel that the way police are operating in our communities is not investing in our communities. the way police are -- it's actually violent and intrusive. we want to see her invest m schools, economic development and things besides the police department. >> the group gathered at the mayor's house at 5:00 and the demonstration ended about two hours later. there there are no supports of any arrests. after 30 years in operation, the last remaining freedom country to honger martin luther king, junior made its final trip. the soldout train left from san jose to san francisco with 1400 passengers on board. our reporter was on the train and is live from the cal station to explain what this trip met to those aboard. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. being on the train there was a lot of passion, a lot of

excitement. a lot of energy. there are people there who ride it every year, newcomers and a lot of children, all hoping to make in the historic moment one last time. ♪ >> i'm gonna get it shine. this little let of mine -- >> reporter: you heard it right there. throughout this 54-mile ride, passengers broke out in song, read books, all to remember the equality and justice dr. king stood for. the train ride established 30 years to common commemorate the -- to commemorate the route. many on today's train remember that march that demanded equal voting rights and the day dr. king was killed, riding the train for many, one more time a way to honor his legacy.

tremendous amount of pride of being alive at a time where someone as courageous as dr. king and everyone else with him. again, i was young at the time but there's a sense of pride that we lived in. >> reporter: passengers came from all over the bay area, some from southern california. people from morgan hill, oakland. many said they left inspire and proud hoping this won't be the last one. dr. martin luther king association of santa clara valley said they are ending this ride because of declining ridership and also difficulty getting a sponsor. many just grateful to take in the experience and we'll have more on the sights and sounds of this train ride coming up at 5:00. tori? >> all right. thank you. live for us in san francisco. and for more details about the mlk events going on, head to ktvu.com and look under web links. arson investigators are looking into three suspicious

fires in san francisco's castro neighborhood this morning as alex savidge explains, an arsonist targeted that exact same area a few months ago. >> reporter: a pile of charred debris sat on the sidewalk outside this home on hartford street that was damaged in an early-morning fire. investigators believe someone torched the trash can outfront and the -- out front and the frames spread. the family who lives here was sleeping inside at the time but they got out safely after a neighbor knocked on their door. >> kind of ran up to the front window and i could see from the light there was a fire. >> scary. 4:30 in the morning to be woken up and the house is on fire. >> reporter: this was one of three fires this morning. across the street, someone burned this trash can. a couple of blocks away near 19th and castro street, someone set fire to the items in the bed of this pickup. the truck was destroyed. that truck is my baby. that's hoey i make my living.

i've had -- that's how i make my living. i've had it for 15 years. i'm gonna miss it. >> reporter: this is the same neighborhood where someone intentionally set a series of car fires back in november. neighbors suspect an arsonist is on the loose. >> i'm worried. there is a nut out there. i hope you guys catch him. >> the castro is such a welcoming neighborhood and you got people behaving like this. it's just very heartbreaking. >> reporter: it's unclear if the investigators have drawn a link between this morning's fires and the cases last year. it's safe to say neighbors see a connection and they are nervous. in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. sonoma county sheriff's deputies arrested a man who they say attacked a woman with a wrench in the parking lot of the graton resort and casino. the woman was sleeping in a car yesterday afternoon when the man jumped into the driver's

seat and started attacking her. security guards heard the woman screaming and chased the man away. was arrested when he came back to get his car. the woman was taken to the hospital. there's word that san francisco will beef up the fleet of ambulances. the city will buy 19 new ambulances and will always hire extra paramedics. this comes as fire chief joanne hayes-white has been under fire over the city's ambulance response times. in october, firefighters gave her a vote of no confidence but so far there's no indication the mayor intends to make any changes in department leadership. the search is on for two suspects who rammed a u-haul truck into the clothing store. and a foggy start to the day. steve paulson will tell us what you can expect for the rest of your workweek. and the nfl now investigating claims the new england patriots cheated during yesterday's afc championship game. what the team is accused of

san francisco police are investigating a double stabbing at a popular mission street nightclub. it happened around 1:50 this morning in front of eltapatia. police say one person was stabbed in the stomach.

the other in the back. both were taken to the hospital. so far no word on their condition. police are also looking for two burglars who heavily damaged a clothing store early this morning in san francisco. investigators say around 3:30, two men rammed a white u-haul truck through the front door of the padagonia store not far from fisherman's wharf. the pair grabbed clothing and jackets all in a few minutes. >> there was a u-haul. we got a description of a partial plate. agi 135 and suspects were black males. had bandanas covering their face. >> the truck was found several blocks away. no sign of the thieves. investigators hope surveillance video will provide more clues. police have released video footage and a photo of a woman suspected of using a counterfeit $100 bill. this video was taken back on december 20th at a beauty salon and supply store at the

carlmont village shopping center on almeda. you can see her wearing hospital type scrubs with dark pants. police are asking anyone with information to contact them. police are searching for three people who robbed a couple along a residential street on wul boulevard near ignacio valley road. walnut creek police say the three suspects might be involved in an armed robbery in pleasant hill and a carjacking in concord. in san francisco, civil rights act vivets are expressing support for the home -- activists are expressing support for the homeless. they held a sleep-in at the corner of powell and market streets. organizers want city leaders to give homeless people help, not tickets for sleeping on the sidewalk. >> instead of that we're

demanding a dignified, you know, city-based solution to that which really invests in housing and things like that treatment and the long-term needs that people have as opposed to just trying to figure out how to cite them out of this. >> last year the state assembly rejected a proposed law allowing homeless people the right to res in public spaces including on sidewalks. mtv is taking the color out of its programming to encourage people to talk about what race means in their lives. the network is airing all of its shows in black and white. it's a first in the channel's history. every commercial break from 9:00 to 9:00 tonight will feature personal reflections on race from musicians to celebrities. the widow of a slain sacramento county sheriff's deputy will attend president obama's state of the union address tomorrow. deputy danny oliver was shot and killed in october when he stopped to check on a suspicious car in a hotel parking lot.

the man suspected of killing oliver has also been accused in the shooting death of a placer county sheriff's detective. oliver's wife was invited to attend the state of the union as a guest of a congress member. we will carry the president's state of the union address live here on ktvu tomorrow starting at 6:00 p.m. the race is on to save dozens of birds found along the east bayshore line and identify the mysterious substance that's killing many of them. close to 100 birds have been brought to the bird rescue center in fairfield so far. all coated with a thick, gray, sticky substance. about 12 dirdz have died. so far, experts have ruled out an oil spill until more tests come back and they can only say some kind of manmade substance coating the bird's feathers. >> if we're not able to completely get it off the

bird's feathers and get them rewaterproofed, they won't make it through the event. >> they will be along the alameda area today. rescuers are also asking the public to keep an eye out for birds in distress. some low-lying areas around the bay area are seeing minor flooding today. it's expected to continue over the next two days due to exceptionally high tides. this is some video of the king tide that happened last month sending waves washing over the embarcadero in san francisco. the next two mornings we will see similar conditions in areas prone to coastal flooding. we could see bigger waves and stronger than usual rip currents. a new study reveals some of the most complained about airports in the united states and sfo tops the list when it comes to delays. at sfo, united airlines got the

temps to be very warm. in fact, they may get back in the low 60s as we heads this weekend with really warm terms. plenty of fog in the valley. it's not going anywhere until probably wednesday. wednesday night and thursday where we'll get an offshore breeze. until then, mostly sunny. a lot of patchy fog out there. 60s on the temps. some the of the areas to the east could be in the 50s. mid-60s lows this morning were really warm we had a lot of mid- 50s. the 30s and cold lows have been disappearing rapidly. we'll get a lot of 60s. it looks likes tomorrow morning a lot of fog coming back. cooler on wednesday. weak system brushes us. but we get high pressure and a north need wind and record high temperatures. the nfl is investigating claims of cheating by the new england patriots during yesterday's game. what the team is accused of doing to the football to help lead them to a victory over the

governor brown says he intends to work with unions to chip away at the price of healthcare for retire public employee. brown's office says the state is facing an estimated 72 billion shortfall to pay for healthcare coverage once current workers retire from civil service. the cost of retiree healthcare in california has jumped from 458 million in 2001 to nearly 2

billion today. brown wants all state workers to make contributions to their healthcare retirement funds. currently only three of the state's 21 bargaining units make some contribution to retiree health. it appears the world's richest people just keep on getting richer. today, according to a new study, the world's richest 1% is on track to control 50% of the global wealth by next year. that's up from 48% just last year. the report was released ahead of the world economic forum which starts in switzerland tomorrow. authors of the study plan to use it to urge world leaders including president obama to tackle global inequality by tracking down on tax dodging, investing in republic services and implements equal pay. facebook is looking to fill more than 1100 jobs as the social networking site continues with aggressive growth plans. facebook is looking to hire
