you are looking live at the scene of a horrible crash on interstate 580 in castro valley. police say one person is dead, three others hospitalized. ktvu's brian flores is there and talking with police about what led up to the deadly crash as sal is looking at the best ways to get around the traffic jam this is causing. good morning, welcome to "mornings on 2". it's friday, january 23rd, 7:00, i'm tori campbell. >> good morning, tori. good morning, i'm dave clark. let's also talk about your weather and traffic. let's go right to steve paulson with your forecast. >> getting warmer slowly. tomorrow. >> getting warmer. >> yeah.
7:01 am
yesterday was cold with that fog and that east wind. we still have some fog, the east wind has kind of died down to more of a puff or just a breeze. but some fog, high clouds, cold for many, 30s yet the higher elevations are in the 50s already and that's a sign that high pressure is building in and we'll get more warmer air. the warmest air arrives i think on sunday. we'll gradually rebound today. there's some fog to keep a cap on things with the 30s, but the higher clouds are moving out and the storm track is going way up and over. so once we get rid of the fog, a lot 30s, though. take your pick. the warmest, though, half moon bay with a north wind, it's 57 balmy degrees. that's 10 warmer than sfo and 20 warmer than fairfield. but there's plenty of 30s around, including woodside, menlo park, palo alto, las altos hills and higher elevations low 50s. foster city at 40 degrees. up and over she goes, high pressure is on the way. but today is a transition day, even though we do have mostly sunny skies today, it will be a little bit warmer. look for highs mostly in the 60s today, but by the weekend temperatures will really take a
7:02 am
jump up. we'll have more on that in about 10 minutes. now sal who's been a busy man unfortunately this morning. >>reporter: that's right, steve. we have that tough situation to deal with this morning right from the beginning of the show. one person is dead and at least three more injured after a rollover crash on eastbound interstate 580 near castro valley. ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores is live near the scene. they're preparing to reopen the road, brian. it's not open yesterday, obviously. >>reporter: no, it's not, sal. it's still going to be about 25 minutes or so until all lanes are going to be reopened here. but as you mentioned we are ear eastbound 580 -- here eastbound 580 just east of 104. if you are heading this direction, you know the traffic from 150th onward, this is the reason why. i'm going to step aside. this is the latest from the scene. as you can see chp remains on here, a tow truck here, also towing away one of the cars involved, but this is -- this not off to a good start this morning for all the traffic -- for some traffic here, this is one of the major traffic spots
7:03 am
that is being affected this morning. it's going to be, again, about 25 minutes or so until all lanes are back open. want to go to some video now of the scene earlier. according to chp this happened at about 4:20 this morning. a four-door sedan carrying a driver and two other passengers was on the freeway, again, eastbound 580 when the car somehow overturn on the center divide. it was then partially blocking the fast lane according to the chp, and then moments later the driver of a honda pilot suv, also headed in the same direction t-boned that sedan. the sedan then burst into flames. now when crews arrived, one woman, it's unclear whether she was a passenger or a driver, she was killed. two other passengers and the driver of the honda pilot were taken to eden medical center for injuries. >> that vehicle left the roadway and subsequently overturned into the center divide. at a later point in time, a second vehicle, a gray honda pilot struck that vehicle, causing the overturned vehicle
7:04 am
to -- be engulfed in flames. >>reporter: still lots of unanswered questions when it comes to the scene. we're still trying to figure out if that sedan had some type of mechanical problems that cause it to overturn on 580. it's also unclear whether drugs or alcohol or speed were involved in this. chp continuing their investigation this morning. back out here live, this is changing as we speak. they just towed away the honda pilot. they also towed away that sedan, it's off to the right shoulder now, so it could be moments or minutes from now until eastbound 580 reopens this morning. the good news, again, is that this was the non-typical commute direction. in fact, hold on for one second. excuse me, we're outta here? >> yeah. we're opening up right now. >>reporter: they're going to be opening up lanes in just a few minutes from now, so we'll get clear of the scene, again, eastbound 580 just east of 164th. traffic currently being diverted but just minutes from now all lanes are going to be open in just a few minutes. but, sal, we are not off to a good start, as i mentioned for
7:05 am
the friday morning commute. >>reporter: no, absolutely not, brian. thank you for your report. we do have an alternate for you. i'm going to put up a map to show you around here -- if you drive on 580 eastbound, you can get off at 164 and go down to east 14th, and then rejoin 238 to 580. but if you're just at home, you might either want to wait because you heard them saying they're going to reopen the lanes or you might want to take 880 to 238 and make it easy for yourself. at this point they're moving everything off and the lanes should reopen in just a few moments. let me move the maps here because i want to show 580 now, 580 westbound through livermore to pleasantton, not that bad and to the sanol graib and pleasantton through that whole stretch not that bad at all. let's 2 to the live pictures now, babe ranch seems lighter than usual and backed up for a 15 to 20-minute wait at the toll plaza. san jose northbound toohey right through downtown, a quiet commute. we haven't had much going on. a a minor accident 101
7:06 am
northbound in sunnyvale. it has not cause a lot of slow traffic. 7:05. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. a berkeley high school student was arrested yesterday, another was sent to the hospital after a big fight near the campus. around 2:00 yesterday afternoon police received several calls about a fight on shaddick avenue near alston way. when officers arrived, they found about 20 students and several fights happening at the same time. a 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of battery. the student taken to the hospital has minor injuries. police are investigating what start the fight. and this is not the first time berkeley high school students have been arrest for fighting. this is video from may of last year when students from berkeley high, berkeley tech and oakland tech converged on shaddock avenue. several fights broke out and three people were arrest. and then in october 15 berkeley high school students were suspended during a mob scene involving about 500 students. one teacher was injured during
7:07 am
that incident. the fbi and san francisco police are searching for a man connected to at least seven recent bank robberies. police say these are photos of the suspect from bank surveillance cameras. investigators say the robber has used a fake mustache, a black trench coat, a dark colored fedora and sometimes a fake beard to disguise himself. he's described as a white man in his 30s or 40s between 5'7" and 5'9" tall with a very thin build and pale skin. the seven robberies have occurred across san francisco. the first was last october, the most recent just last week. if you have any information, you're asked to call the fbi. time is 7:07. dream works animation, they're cutting jobs and the bay area office is really getting hit hard. the company best known tore "select select and "how to -- for "shrek." what's going to happen to the people who work there? >>reporter: hey, dave. yes, well, there are going to
7:08 am
be layoffs. dream works pdi facility here on seaport boulevard is reportedly closing its doors. we spoke to an employee earlier this morning who expressed disappointment and also did mention how at least so far this morning he's seen less people come into the building. numerous media outlets are reporting that the dream works building on seaport boulevard just off of highway 101 is shutting down. inside the building you can see it's decorated with animated characters from its films. the company is scaling back as part of a restructuring move that includes laying off about 20% of its work force, that's 500 jobs. most of its workers are in redwood city and it's main studio in glendale, california. dream works is best known for producing the movie "shrek," "madagascar," and "kung fu panda." the films underperformed at the box office. they say making three films a year was just too ambitious and instead dream works will focus on making two a year. dream works does have one movie
7:09 am
coming out later this year. it is called "home" and about an alien race looking for a new home and they choose earth where one of aliens befriends a girl. that hits theaters in late march. dream works employees at the redwood city office will reportedly be offered positions in glendale down in southern california. back to you. >> janine, what a story. thank you. time now 7:09. happening now a high surf advisory for the whole bay area coastline. beaches from sonoma to monterey county are at risk for those dangerous sneaker waves. the waves could be 15 feet high, all because of a storm system developing in the pacific ocean. if you're heading for the beach, be very, very careful. if you get in the water or walk on the beach, that high surf warning in effect until sunday. ss 7:09 now. some developing news on the two japanese hostages being held by isis. wewe are learning a new video has been posted online with a countdown clock and graphic pictures of other hostages who
7:10 am
have been beheaded. the mother of one hostage is pleading for his release. she says her son who is a journalist went to syria to try and free his friends who have been captured by the islamic state. the group said it would behead the two men today if japan did not pay $200 million. japanese leaders reportedly told the men's families japan will not pay the ransom. all right, tori, time is 7:10. beyond threats from isis, there's been major, major developments in the middle east. up next we'll show you how middle east problems ranging from terrorism to the death of saudi arabia's king could affect us here right in the u.s. also a push for an expanded investigation into a deadly police shooting that was caught on a new jersey officer's dashcam. why the officer says he actually recognized the man who he shot and killed. >>reporter: we're looking at a commute that is finally beginning to recover after a really bad start. this is 237 westbound. you see a little slowing there
7:11 am
7:13 am
time is 7:13. the san francisco police department is reeling from a verdict in the police corruption trial involving two of its officers. it's the latest chapter in a case that saw two other officers convicted last month. yesterday a federal jury convicted officer arshad razzic of charges that include violating a tenant's civil rights by illegally searching a room and falsifying records. richard iak, the other officer involved in the trial was acquitted. the case start four years ago. san francisco public defender jeff adachi publicized surveillance videos from the
7:14 am
tape and shows plain-clothessed officers conducting searches at a residential hotel without warrants. >> we all have to abide by the constitution, even police officers. >> officer razick's attorney said "i'm obviously disappointed. there were mounlds of doubt in the government's case. " rassick is set to be sentenced april 28th. iak will be reinstated. the reverend al sharpton's civil rights organization are the latest to call for a new jersey state investigation into the killing of a man by two police officers during a traffic stop in new jersey. now, the police dashcam capture the entire incident. that video was at least a couple of days ago. two police officers pulled a man over for running a stop sign december 30th. one of the officers yelled to his partner after he saw a firearm in the car. they repeatedly told the passenger in the car show his hands but he ignored the demands. he then got out of the car and
7:15 am
started raising his hands to his shoulder's height. that's when the police officer opened fire and killed him. the officer who shot him says he recognized the man from previous arrests. the 36-year-old man had served a prison sentence for shooting at state troopers when he was a teenager. prosecutors and the new jersey attorney general are making no comment on this shooting. 7:15. thousands have gathered in the capital of saudi arabia today paying last respects to king abdullah. this is new video of the king's funeral procession this morning. the king died earlier today at the age of 90 after a battle of pneumonia. saudi arabia quickly appointmented abdullah's 79- year-old brother to the thrown. king abdullah had been in power for almost two decades and was an american ally. the new king says he will continue saudi arabia's current policies. president obama is offering his condolences and sympathies to the people of saudi arabia. in a statement he said "i
7:16 am
always valued king abdullah's perspective and appreciated our genuine and warm friendship." meanwhile saudi arabia's southern neighbors, the country of yemen is falling deeper into political uncertainty. yemen's president and cabinet resigned after a rebel group took over that country's capital, including the presidential palace. the resignation comes just days after the government agreed to a power-sharing deal that would send the rebel's control over yemen. tori, these two major developments could threaten u.s. interests in the middle east. our reporter doug luzader joins us live from washington d.c. with more potential impact on gas prices and the fight against terrorists. doug. >>reporter: dave, good morning. and at first these seems like disconnect events taking place in both saudi arabia and yemen, both, though, are troubling the to united states and both may represent real opportunities for iran. [ speaking foreign language."
7:17 am
>>reporter: in saudi arabia the death of king abdullah sets off a transition in what has long been a stalwart u.s. ally in the middle east and in yes, ma'am eb the collapse of of the government there threatens u.s. counterterrorism efforts in what has become an al-qaida hotbed. >> what we're seeing across the middle east is a dissent into chaos, crisis in country after country is now spreading across the entire region. >>reporter: the saudi government has a transition plan in place, but even the potential of uncertainty has caused oil prices to edge up overnight. the fall of yemen's government may be even more troubling because the rebel group that pushed out the leadership there may give iran greater influence in the region. the state department has still been trying to get a read on what's really happening on the ground there. >> we're continuing to encouraging and support a peaceful transition. obviously we're not in a position, i don't think any of you are either to assess what it means at this point in time. >>reporter: but for the u.s. is already means a partial evacuation of the embassy there
7:18 am
and the u.s. drone program to take out terrorist targets in yemen could now be in peril. and it came just as president obama spoke of the importance of drone strikes during a series of unusual interviews at the white house yesterday with youtube celebrity. >> the sort of damage that may have taken place with a drone strike is always significantly less than if i ordered a raid into a village where a high value of terrorist target was. >>reporter: yemen is concerned. the state department put out a memo today saying it's very troubled about what happened there. the timing here is kind of awkward because the administration has long kind of held up yemen as an example of a successful policy in dealing with terror. now there's a real question as to whether the drone campaign, for instance, can continue there. dave and tori. >> reporter doug luzader, doug, thank you. >> very interesting. 7:18 is the time. we'll check in with sal. boy, you've been busy for a friday morning, sal. >>reporter: that's right.
7:19 am
unfortunately we started off on a bad way. eastbound 580 was closed at 64th there, just reopening the lanes now. so if you're at home, i would just wait another 10, 15 minutes to be on the safe side. but i'm reading right off the screen here that said just moments away from all lanes reopening eastbound 580 on the way to castro valley out of san leandro and oakland. i want to talk about some other things, though. the bay bridge is backed up for a 20 to 25-minute wait. getting into san francisco traffic on the span looks good once you get there. also looking at the commute in san jose, northbound 101 slow right from 280 and that looks kind of normal. but the other freeways are looking good, 85 and 280 are a little bit lighter than usual. we have a live picture of 280 from downtown san jose, and you can see -- i think we have it here -- northbound 280 on the right which is there looks very nice. so the santa clara valley is getting a bump here in better than usual traffic -- well, friday light is what we call it around here. 7:19. let's go to steve. >> all right, sal, thank you,
7:20 am
sir. we do have some fog out there, santa rosa, napa, concord, livermore flirting with some fog here, talking about that this morning. but the higher clouds look like they've moved off. still some patchy fog, nothing compared to yesterday. that fog stuck around for a while, until noon for some or even longer and you threw in an east breeze behind that, it was a cold one. it's also a dry start. i'll tell ya, if we do not get some rain next tuesday and wednesday, and that looks very if-y and weak, we may go the entire month without any rain in san francisco. there's been some rain in santa rosa, but hardly any. san francisco is what i'm focusing on. that would be the dryest january ever, dryer than last year which was.06 only. there's never been a january in san francisco without any rain and this may be the first. a warm weekend is on tap. sunday looks to be the warmest. we'll start a little bit today, but more so on saturday. all-time january records, oakland 78, sfo 73, gilroy 80 and sacramento 79. when were those set? last year, last year, last year, last year. here we are one year later maybe trying to break a record
7:21 am
for a january all-time high without any rain. crazy. the higher clouds moving off, the fog is still there, but not as much as we had yesterday. it'll be confine to the valley. temperatures are cold this morning for many. lower 30s. half moon bay is 59 balmy degrees with a north wind and there is a little bit of an easterly breeze in place for some. higher elevations are warming up. we get around 1,700, 2000 feet they're in the 50s, yet lower elevations 30s and 40s. that warm air aloft is a sure sign high pressure is building in from here. as it noses in, there may be an all-time record -- it's called the oakland sounding. they take measurements of the atmosphere. it's never been 20 degrees celsius at 5,000 feet, never. that's a possibility by sunday it'll be that warm. so if it's 68 at 5,000 feet, it's going to be really warm for some at the surface. already these higher clouds are clearing out. so mostly sunny friday and a little warmer, but yesterday was so cool, we'll rebound today, temperatures warming up, but the weekend does look very warm, even though the nights will probably be on the chilly
7:22 am
to cold side because it'll be clear. morning clouds will give way to afternoon sunshine. 60s on the temps. might be a little bit of a slow recovery for some still off to the east, but by the coast it's going to be sunny and warmer, and then it looks really warm as we go into the weekend. i think just clouds and nothing else early next week, but way above average this weekend for the coast. >> big concerns about travel plans for this weekend? >> northeast. big system going in there, a lot of snow. >> that's right. >> the tri-state area like four to eight inches of snow. >> wow! >> all right, steve, thank you. time is 7:22. a man has been arrested in a serial murder case, and coming up in 20 minutes why authorities say they think he's responsible for terrorizing the peninsula back in the 1970s. new england patriots quarterback tom brady speaks out about the scandal involving underinflated footballs. up next the star quarterback who he thinks brady is lying.

7:26 am
had something to do with this or the balls to have been deflated, that doesn't happen unless the quarterback wants that to happen, i can assure you of that. >> that's former dallas cowboys quarterback troy aikman. he says quarterbacks tell ball boys all the time how much air they want in the football. fox sports is reporting the nfl was tipped off about the underinflated footballs and always intended to test them at half time. most of the footballs were at least 16% flatter than the nfl allows. now, a couple of indianapolis radio deejays are having a little fun at tom brady's expense. they've been asking their listeners drop off partially inflated toys at the station. the toys will now be sent to the new england patriots. the deejays are hoping their prank will raise the spirits of the indianapolis colts fans who were disappointed after losing to the patriots. >> the late night comedy shows having a field day. it is 7:26.

the american gaming association predicts americans will illegally bet $3.8 billion on the super bowl. this it dwarfs, though, the amount of legal betting. nevada casinos expected to take in $120 million in wagers. many illegal bets come in the form of office pools. before you plunk down $5 on a pool, know you could be slapped with a fine. some states specifically allow office pools but not california. and while it's doubtful anyone will be prosecuted, a state statute says if you participate in a pool with at least a $2,500 pot, you are subject to a $250 fine. 7:27. a big protest at bart headquarters. standoff. we'll tell you the new information we've learned about what led up to this incident. >>reporter: good morning. right now traffic is going to be a little bit busier than normal in some areas, but not too bad here on 280. a little slowing at 17 and then it's off to cupertino with little or no delays. still a little bit of fog out there, but nothing compared to 24 hours ago. it's all a sign high pressure is building in and what looks to be a rather warm, maybe record-setting warm weekend.
7:31 am
7:30 and you're looking live at a tense situation in san francisco's ingleside neighborhood. a police standoff that's been going on for more than 13 hours. up next ktvu's tara moriarty has been out there all morning. coming up she will tell you what police are telling her about the people barricaded in the home. welcome back to "mornings on 2". i'm tori campbell. >> tense time there, tori. time is 7 7:31. i'm dave clark. let's talk weather and traffic now. it's still nippy outside. >> it's cold, 30s out there. some fog, but not a lot. yesterday was very foggy and it stayed that way for many, tough to get out of the 50s. today, though, that fog is going to burn off a little sooner. most of the higher clouds look like they have already moved off. so cold for some to down right warm for a few. that would be over by the coast.
7:32 am
hazy sunshine, a little bit warmer here. these are some of the forecasted highs. these -- again, this will mainly be a coastal event, santa construction to capatol looks to be the warmest. upper 60s to low 70s. possibility of record highs more likely on sunday and maybe some all-time record high january temps as well heading into sunday. today we start off with a little bit of fog. but everything else is riding up and over the ridge of high pressure which is bringing 30s. half moon bay, though, 59. some of the higher elevations, you get up above 1,700 feet and 58 degrees. warm aaloft, 30s for lakeport, low 40s, but everything is pointing towards a warmup even though it's darned cold as we say for some this morning. morning fog, a few clouds, but overall lots of sunshine this afternoon. it will warm up quicker, but i think tomorrow is a bigger day on that warmup today. today is a transition day. sal, would would you like to start, my friend? >>reporter: well, we're going to start this time on the golden gate bridge. one of my friends just actually texted me about this very
7:33 am
subject, and people are on the golden gate bridge reportedly driving faster because of this new center divide. we've had it on as a story here. i heard it all over the place yesterday. and during the commute hour, that's not so much the case. i think that this happens when the bridge is wide open because there is less of a fear of a head-on collision. that's really not good thinking says the chp. they say driving on the bridge is still dangerous, driving too fast on the bridge is still too dangerous and they're out there tickets people who drive more than 45 miles an hour. so just beware. don't get a ticket. that would stink. westbound 80 at the bay bridge toll plaza as you come up from the macarthur maze to the toll plaza, about a 20-minute delay. no major problems getting onto that bridge. 580 finally has opened, all the lanes near 238 westbound was never an issue, really. still unwinding a little bit of traffic there. 580 through livermore and dublin looks good. 7:33. let's go back to the desk. >> sal, thank you. developing news for you in
7:34 am
san francisco. police tactical teams, they're in position now outside of a home near the san francisco state campus. a man has been barricaded since 6:00 last night. ktvu's tara moriarty is out there. you've been out there for several hours with the latest on the efforts to get the suspect to surrender. tara. >>reporter: yeah, we've just learned some new information and that is the suspect who holed himself up in the home has psychiatric issues and he had had an argument with his mother. now just behind me there are some patrol cars that just pulled up. we understand that they're sort of in this holding pattern. they're waiting for the district captain to arrive to take over the scene here. but they want to try to get inside of the home that you see the pink one, that's where the man is barricaded. and negotiators are trying to make some headway to get the situation resolved.
7:35 am
[ indiscernable ] >>reporter: talks last night were unsuccessful. police broke a window when they tossed a phone into the suspect's house to try to start the negotiation process. just a couple of minutes ago we saw them draw their guns and now that we're out in the daylight things are a little bit easier to see. the standoff has been going on now for almost 13 hours, almost 14, actually. we're on ashton and grasston avenues where police got a call around 6:00 last night regarding this heated argument. the situation escalated and ended with the suspect barricading himself inside. >> it was just a flood of cops. this was probably -- i think i counted 20 cop cars on ashton avenue alone just up and down and i was on the one block. it was probably within another hour or two and there were s.w.a.t trucks and they were yelling at the guy trying to get him to come ouz. >>reporter: now, we've learned from sources in the police department that the mother did make it out safely last night. we're not sure if the suspect is armed. no evacuations of nearby homes
7:36 am
have been necessary, but muni buses that use garfield street that turns into grafton, they have been rerouted. back here live, you can see they are gearing up here, so we should be seeing some movement, hopefully getting this situation resolved within the next half hour to hour or so. live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> thank you, tara. time now 7:36. protesters packed last night's board meeting in oakland, demanding all charges be dropped against the people arrested in november during a demonstration in west oakland. 7:50 am
a wonderfully warm weekend, even though it's january. may beat all-time january records, oakland 78, sfo 73. sacramento 79, all these were set one year ago when we had 18 days of record highs or tying record highs. these are my forecasted temps for saturday, santa rosa 75. santa cruz looks to be down to watson, all the coast will be nice. inland temps will be upper 60s to low 70s. the warm air aloft is building in, that fog is burning off and the higher clouds have already moved out ap the next system has no chance. it's cold, though, for most. half moon bay is 59 degrees already. 30s for many, 40s for others, but i'll tell ya, i saw fairfield down to 34, they're now 39. 1,700 feet 57. that's that warm air coming in, hillsburg 37. there's a bigger difference between some of the higher elevations and at the surface. but after everything is said and done, it means a warmer pattern is kicking in. in fact, temperatures well above average through the weekend, a good 10, 15 degrees.
7:51 am
mostly sunny friday here. it's already beginning to burn off, a lot of that fog, and a little bit warmer. i went back into the 60s, but by tomorrow i think we'll see upper 60s and 70s. sunday looks to be the warmest day, and then we'll keep an eye on the south for some tropical clouds maybe moving in here, but let me deal with that on monday. clouds and nothing else. and if it doesn't get any rain then, we may not get any rain through the end of the month which would be a first for san francisco in january. 60s on most of these temps. some of these will be low 60s, and then tomorrow sunshine and warmer temps, warmest day looks to be sunday. still okay monday and then we'll cloud it up on tuesday. >> all right, steve. >> thank you, receive. >> thank you, steve. time is now 7:51. to the delight of football fans everywhere, the folks of bad lip reading, they've done it again. >> you gotta keep eat breakfast. then lunch. >> you know what i mean? more of the hilarious voice overs in the next hour of "mornings on 2". plus some bay area favorites.

roadway and subsequently overturned into the center divide. at a later point in time, a second vehicle, a gray honda pilot struck that vehicle causing the overturned vehicle to be engulfed in flames. >>reporter: as we've been talking about all morning long for about three hours, eastbound lanes of 580 from 164th were completely closed. commuters, in fact, were forced to exit onto 164th as they were trying to get onto highway 238. but, again, the eastbound lanes of 580 are back open this morning, but, again, lots of unanswered questions, especially who the victim is in this case and what actually caused the crash. chp will continue to investigate and we will stay on top of this story and bring you the very latest. back to you, sal. >> brian, thank you very much. that's brian who is near castro valley there, and as he said, those lanes have reopened. the other freeway commute traffic has not been as bad fortunately. as we look at 80 westbound, you can see traffic has begun to

we reported that san francisco police made an arrest in connection to an arson case in castro. 25-year-old suspect david diaz may be in court as early as today. he's accused of starting a fire behind a beauty salon last saturday morning. he's also being investigated for but has not yet been charged with two trash can fires set monday outside of homes in that same area. >> at this time he's only -- we are only charging him for the incident from the 17th, but as with any investigation, this bill is an ongoing and active investigation. >> his life was kind of going well. i especially can't imagine him running around the castro lighting small fires, it makes no sense. >> now, diaz served three years in jail for involuntary manslaughter for strangling a sex partner and burning his body back in 2011. time is 8:33. protesters really turned out for last night's bart board meeting demanding that all

state college. he's been barricaded there since 6:00 last night and the police are moving in. ktvu's tara moriarty is out there live now. so what's happening? >>reporter: well, the tactical team is in place. police have asked us not to show home in case the suspect is watching television. so, of course, we're going to honor that. we know a while ago it looked like the teams were moving in and moving inside the house. they actually did not go physically into the house, but we do know that officers are reattempting negotiations. now, we spoke to the captain here about 15 minutes ago and he told us that the man who has barricaded himself inside his house on grafton and ashton avenues had an argument with his family last night around 6:00. sources inside, sfpd tells me it was a physical altercation between the suspect and his brother which escalated. the brother called 911 and he and his mother got out. >> what's happening now is we're waiting. he's inside, we think he's by
