warning the public, cold water and big waves are only for the experienced, unless you are a big wave surfer. come to the beach, but stay out of the water. john fowler, ktvu channel 2news. tomorrow is another spare the air day here in the bay area. that means no wood burning for 24 hours, unless it's your only source of heat. air quality officials say a high pressure system off the coast will produce stagnant air that traps smoke close to the ground. this will be the 21st spare the air alert so far this winter season. our chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the conditions tonight. >> he joins us now in the weather center. bill, you know how dangerous the waves and rip currents can be. >> yeah, and with the warmth, julie and frank, the combination of big surf and warmth drives people to the beaches. of course that's the rip tides at ocean beach, about as dangerous as they get anywhere in the world, certainly in the united states. one of the most dangerous beach breaks in terms of rip tides and other things. the reason for that is as you see the surf here peaking right

now, the swell should start to fall off after midnight, but it's still very large. even though it's going to be smaller on sunday, here's the bay, right? right in this area is where the golden gate bridge is. as the tide goes out, you've got big tide swings, so you got 4 and 5 and 6 feet of water leaving the bay, coming out here. then you get these giant waves coming in and it creates some of the nastiest currents you could ever imagine. the mexico couple of days out at ocean beach are going to be bad. matter of fact, the as well as coming out of the west, so this is sort of a due west direction. here's ocean beach right here. see how that faces west? the swell hits it directly. you look at a place like point arena here, see that right there? as well as come out of the west, but inside the tip, doesn't get as big a swell. these west-facing beaches get hammered. ocean beach will have a lot of big surf, bad rip currents. as i mentioned earlier, you wouldn't catch me swimming in that area. with a surfboard, you're

6:08 pm
>> harris says reexamining fingerprint evidence will prove his claims. the zodiac is suspected of killing as many as six people in the late 1960s. the san francisco police department issued a statement about the matter today, saying in part we have to have evidence to arrest people for crimes, not work on hearsay or beliefs. we want people to contact us with information. anyone can say what they would like or claim or believe, but we work with evidence. a man accused in two of the so-called gypsy hill murders dating back to the '70s spoke to ktvu today about his arrest and the allegations. ktvu's cristina rendon sat down with the suspect at the jail in redwood city and he made both an admission and a denial. >> reporter: our cameras were not allowed inside the jail, but i did speak with rodney halbauer for about 45 minutes this morning and i showed him this paper with the photos of the two bay area women he's accused of killing. he immediately looked at them and said he didn't recognize them. speaking from inside the san mateo county jail, rodney halbauer told me he had never

heard of the gypsy hill murders committed in 1976, until he found out he was being charged with killing two of the five bay area women, and likely one in reno based on a dna match. a woman convicted in the reno murder has been granted a new trial based on this dna evidence. halbauer tells me i was very surprised by this. i never, ever committed rape or murder. i never did anything like that. authorities believe halbauer committed the bay area killings while out on bail for other crimes in nevada, and right before he was convicted of raping a nevada woman in 1976. he says he was wrongly imprisoned and escaped twice. while on the run the second time, he says he stole a car and traveled to oregon. he admits to stabbing a woman multiple times there, saying, i was extremely desperate and insanely motivated. i wanted to get away from the crimes committed against me. i was headed to canada. he went on to say i'm sorry. i wish i could take it back. so if halbauer is capable of stabbing an oregon woman who
6:10 pm
survived her attack, why won't he admit to the two gypsy hill murders? authorities say his dna was found at the bay area crime scenes. >> it is time to bring this man to justice for the murders that we can clearly prove at this point and bring some closure to the families as best we can. >> reporter: but halbauer insists he was never there. dna is not the smoking gun that everyone wants it to be, he said. when asked if he had any message for the gypsy hill murder victims' families, he replied with, i hope and pray they get closure, but they won't get closure by coming after me. he was very adamant that he is not a rapist or a killer, but authorities have said he is a violent sociopath. halbauer is 66 and the san mateo district attorney is seeking a life in prison sentence. in our newsroom, cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2news. one part of the bay area is still recovering from last month's big storms. tonight, we're getting a look at an area where crews are still working to repair the

6:16 pm
one for weeks. it was not overrun by a december landslide, but undermined by stormwater flowing under the road and washing the earth underneath it away, causing what's called a slip-out. >> this is a lifeline for the coastal communities. >> reporter: but this is also the legendary pacific coast highway, one of the nation's most important tourist routes, giving visitors from all over the world breath taking views of coastal california. >> that's why we're working so quickly to get this road repaired and opened back up again, because we know people rely on it. >> reporter: as with other emergency projects such as the slide closures, cal trans was able to cut red tape to bring repair crews and their equipment in. >> normally it would take six to eight weeks. we had the permit within a couple of days. >> reporter: still, filling a huge gap and paving over on an extremely high and steep mountainside takes time and the right materials. crews set two-foot wide steel beams more than 20 feet into the ground to hold the wooden

wall forming the barrier. porous water rock fills the hole, into a safe drainage system. this is proven technology and this should last indefinitely, unless, of course, mother nature decides it shouldn't last indefinitely. and as you can see in previous repairs all along highway 1, such slides and slip-outs are not unusual, leaving cal trans to be prepared for the inevitable. >> other areas of the highway that may be susceptible to future storms. >> reporter: this project will be completed in early february. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2news. let's go back to our weather now, bring in chief meteorologist bill martin, because it is absolutely spectacular. bill, i walked out this afternoon, outside my house. i couldn't believe how warm it was! >> yeah, temperatures today, easily into the mid-60s. highs tomorrow, for your saturday, 70s. highs on sunday, perhaps into the mid-70s in some of the warmest spots. doesn't bring good news in terms of potential for rainfall. it just shows -- you don't need me to tell you. look at the jet stream.
