look for the video player right on the front page. california's unemployment rate dropped to 7% in december. that's .2 of a percent better than the previous month. it hasn 't been this low since 2008 before the recession. only 700 net jobs were added last month. california has added 1.5 million jobs since 2010. here in the bay area the unemployment rate in all nine counties is well below the state average. marin has the lowest unemployment rate at 3.4%. san francisco and san mateo countys are less than 4%. that number is actually better than the previous month. some state lawmakers plan to fight the department of motor vehicles over its plans to require uber and lyft

drivers to acquire commercial license plates. today republicans in the state assembly said if the dmv does not change its position they will introduce legislation that will allow ride share drivers to operate while using personal license plates. almost all of the bottles of that very expensive wine stolen from the famous french laundry restaurant have been recovered in north carolina. 76 bottles were stolen from the wine cellar at the restaurant. the grounds keeper discovered a broken door. napa sheriff investigators says somebody in the greensboro area bought the wine not knowing it had been stolen. detectives have brought back 72 of the 76 bottles. they brought it back to the bay area this week. so far no one has been arrested. that wine could be worth as

much as $76,000. looks like guy fieri will not be opening a winery. he had hoped to build a 10,000 case winery in santa rosa in addition to his two restaurants. but yesterday the board rejected his proposal. the board rejected it after hearing hours of opposition from the public. people from the neighborhood say they were concerned the winery would disrupt the area. authorities are hoping our viewers would be able to identify a suspect. he makes a specific threat and that's what police say is so unusual. >> reporter: for more than a month, mountain view police have been looking for this man shown on this video. investigators say the man came to this wall -- walgreens

leaving a suspicious package behind. >> the man came in the store, putt on a bike helmet. approached the pharmacy, said he had a gun and bomb and took oxicodone. >> reporter: the suspect struck again. on the 11th of january he robbed this rite aid also in morgan hill. >> he doesn't say a lot of words. sometimes it's written down. but he has a device with him and tells them he has a bomb. >> reporter: unlike the first two cases the man did not leave any bags behind at the rite aid. officers need your help so take a closer look. the suspect is described as a white man in his 50s. with a raspy voice and usually wearing a black motorcycle jacket with reflective stripes, and a ski mask.

if it continues which it looks like it will through these two days here, we have a chance for a few light sprinkles, 27, 28. at this rate, this would be the driest january for most bay area cities in recorded history. tomorrow is going to be another spare the air day. it's going to be a very warm day. when we come back we'll have the details on our forecast. now to jana katsuyama, she's live in crown beach. one of the many hot spots where the warm weather is drawing people outside. jana. >> reporter: julie, there certainly were a lot of people. district officials tell me with the water districts that they are concerned about this dry, warm spell. but there were a lot of people out here today. who normally you would have empty wet muddy fields. 2-year-old zoe doesn't know anything about rainfall records or typical temperatures. all show knows is she's been able to play outside with her mommy a lot this month.

where it happened and she was out for a morning walk when she was struck and killed by the car. john sasaki tells us even though the car sped away, police have an idea what they're looking for. >> reporter: oakland police were on scene at 18th avenue and east 15th street for hours after the fatal hit-and-run collision the collecting evidence. one of the last items they picked up was the woman's cane. >> it's not easy to be around here by yourself because anything can happen. >> reporter: a near by security camera was rolling around 8:00 a.m. when it happened. at the top of the screen, you can see the woman walking from left to right across the street reaching about half way. that's when the car comes southeast on 15th without slowing down and hits her. she flew several yards before crumbling on the roadway. you can see the car stop but the driver never comes out and just takes off. >> a hit-and-run. >> yeah, a hit-and-run. what do you think about it? >> i don't like it, i don't

one man dead and another injured on new year's day. nam hunh was taken into custody. he and another man were involved in a shooting at the rain bar on mclaughlin avenue. one victim died at the hospital the other survived. the santa clara county district attorney has formally charged him with murder. police are still looking for the other suspect identified as sai hoang lei, 19 of san jose. 38,000 customers lost power on tuesday due to an equipment failure during testing at a substation in el cerrito. during the outage, traffic lights went dark and first responders even had to rescue at least four people who were trapped in elevators. pg & e says it's now investigating what led to the equipment failure. mcdonalds is making changes, the company that's been the symbol of americana

convenience of their menu has turned away customers too. 60% of mcdonalds business comes from the drive through. >> no fillers, no preservatives, no additives, it's all beef and there's no pink slime. >> no not at all. >> reporter: to try to bring back customers the chain is allowing local operators to have more say on menu, such as build your own burgers. but yaro says the chain needs to get back to basics by keeping prices down to keep up demand. >> they have to cut out those elaborate wraps and complicated coffee drinks. they're not going to beat starbucks when it comes to a cup of coffee. >> reporter: the push toward eating fresh has also hurt mcdonald. ryan lee says he rarely gives his daughter fast food and is now making healthier choices. >> probably started two or three years ago. because i started paying more

but they'll need to drop off saturday into sunday morning. a lot of changes at the golden gate bridge. a lot of tide change left over from those king tides. 5-foot change. we're going to have a warm day so a lot of people will go to the beach. i wouldn't go in the water, especially at ocean beach. i pointed this out earlier, they're easy to undercut and get a storm in here. with the broad ridge it really tends to keep things warm for a long time. this isn't a good sign for rain but there's a system that wants to come up from the south as we head into monday and tuesday next week. it's not going to bring us much of anything. maybe a sprinkle at best. it's a shot at something. no major rain in the forecast. tomorrow we're going to see valley fog. we already have it out in modesto. there'll be fog in the inland bay valley. we'll see fog by clayton and concord as well.

>> he picks up the phone screams that he's been attacked by a dog. i run outside and see all the commotion on the street. >> reporter: a driver stopped and pulled the dog off his son. the teenager suffered bites on his arm and bruises on his leg. tracy police say they don't know how the dog got out of the police car and the dog has now been taken out of service. an investigation is now under way. today ktvu spoke with a man accused of killing two women in the peninsula back in the 70s. he freely admitted he was guilty of another crime. cristina rendon met with him but no cameras were allowed. >> reporter: speaking from inside the san mateo jail, rodney told me he had never heard of the gypsy murders committed in 1976 until he was

being charged of killing two of the five bay area women. he tells me, i was very surprised by this. never committed rape or murder. i never committed anything like that. police believe he committed the murders right after he was murdered a nevada woman. he says he was wrongly accused and escaped from prison twice. he went on to say, i'm sorry, i wish i could take it back. so if howbower is capable of stabbing a woman who survived the attack, why won't he admit to the gypsy murders. >> it's time to bring this man

checked baggage. why e cigarettes are considered a fire risk, ken. >> reporter: the faa says that it wants to ensure that passengers do not put e cigarettes in their checked baggage. this comes in the form of a safety alert issues to airlines. it's voluntary but it's very likely airlines will comply and ban that particular practice. it is another example if not for a different reason of the growing restrictions on this rapidly growing smoking alternative. e cigarette devices used heating elements often powered by lithium batteries. the ban by the faa is on checked baggage. >> it would have to be on an extreme situation where something was pressing on to the battery and it was on for a long period of time and it didn't have a safety mechanism to shut them off, which all of them do.

>> reporter: he says some users modify their devices which the faa says was part of the concern that led to this warning. it is the latest in a series of steps taken against e cigarettes. >> we really need to make sure that we're protecting all of the riders of b.a.r.t. >> reporter: just last night the b.a.r.t. board of directors voted to ban e cigarettes on trains and in stations. >> the concerns is these are completely unregulated products. >> reporter: serena chen says they pushed for b.a.r.t. to make this change based on rider complaint. >> the fact that nearly every single city where b.a.r.t. stops does prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes. it seemed ironic that any other place that anyone could -- >> reporter: lacy says it's not fair to treat e cigarettes like traditional cigarettes. >> i think the government should actually be more behind

the electronic cigarettes because it's gotten so many people off of cigarettes that's a real problem. people are dying of cancer. and electronic cigarettes there hasn't been any case of anyone dying of cancer. >> reporter: as for the safety alert issue today, it does not mean you cannot carry these devices on to a plane. the faa says that they should be carried in the cabin of a plane where if there was an instance of overheating or a fire the faa says in the cabin that could be handled quickly. >> ken pritchett at oakland international airport tonight, ken, thank you. the nfl finally broke it silence today surrounding the controversy involving the new england patriots and under inflated footballs. the league says that its investigators have conducted more than 40 interviews so far. the nfl says the under inflated footballs were only used in the first half of the afc championship game. now they're trying to determine if the patriots intentionally

deflated them. several former nfl players have been very critical of the patriots including hall of fame 49ers receiver jerry rice. he says if the patriots win the super bowl, there should be an asterisk by their victory. a federal judge today cleared the way for same-sex marriage in alabama ruling that state's ban is unconstitutional. the judge did not state the ruling. so same-sex couples could start applying for marriage licenses tomorrow. right now same-sex marriage is legal in 36 states. alabama would be the 37th. the supreme court plans to take up the issue in the spring with a decision expected by the end of june. the problem at a city park in san rafael has gotten so bad that the mayor is actually closing the park down. boyd memorial park is on b street. the city's goal is to move out the homeless and clean up the park so that it can reopen in about a month.

>> at boyde park in downtown rafael today, children played. but not far from where homeless people were hanging out. one mother we spoke with told us she doesn't mind a bit. >> my mother went over and they were showing her how to play the drums. >> reporter: but some parents do mind. >> i'm concerned about maybe them wondering into the play area. it's a little scary when you have people that don't have kids. that come to a playground area. >> reporter: this woman is president of the marin history museum located just outside the park. >> i have personally seen what appears to be allege exchange of narcotics. use of narcotics, and folks doing things that are just not allowed in public parks. >> reporter: because of such complaints including vandalism and a small fire recently, the city plans to close the park for at least 30 days beginning monday. the park will undergo safety improvements and the homeless will be offered services. this man says he spends most

developing news tonight out of the south bay where there's word of a deadly hit-and-run accident that claimed a woman's life. it happened around via monte drive in south san jose. investigators have not released any details about the vehicle. they say they're still interviewing possible witnesses. teenagers may be

company box rang the opening bell at wall street. a giant asteroid is expected to fly by earth on monday. nasa says it's about a third of a mile in size and will come about 745,000 miles from earth. you may be able to see it with strong binoculars or telescopes. the asteroid poses no threat to earth. an asteroid this size is not expected to pass this close to earth again until 2027. a san francisco man says he has completed a remarkable journey. he just finished running seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. tim durbin is one of about a dozen runners who have taken this challenge. he says he ran the full 26.2 miles in antartica, chile,

well enjoy the nice weather we're going to see. temperatures near record the next couple of days or at record level. that's the jet stream right. when you see the clouds and it's going like this all the way across the country. i mentioned earlier, it's long. it's elongated or it's a long ridge as opposed to a high altitude ridge. what that means is it's harder to break down. when we get down here a little while we're going to show you a system that comes from the south. it could bring a few sprinkles but not enough to make a big difference. i have fog showing up in sacramento, in davis. out toward the fairfield area. i'm starting to get reports of fog. valley fog pointed pretty quick tonight. the temperatures outside right now. you see the cool air and where that blue is. where the cool moist air is. where you're seeing fog starting to form. temperatures warm up, sunday the warmest day on the bay area weekend. and so, temperatures tomorrow warm a little bit. sunday further warming as the winds go more offshore.

and the storm track stays well to the north. tonight 10:00. this is the computer model. now we're going to move it forward. there's the fog. this is a great shot, it shows you the model dialing it in. takes you not quite to yuba city but pointing north to butte county. that central valley travel is going to be nasty. because it's up this far we're going to start to see valley fog spill into the bay which is very often what happens. of course we'll see patchy fog. if you travel to lake tahoe, you're going to bump into that stuff. probably sunday morning not as much. so as you go into sunday morning. we go right through there. i think there'll be enough of an offshore wind that will scour it out. sunday will be warmer. there'll be more compressional heating. the southern system, here we are. sunday we get through the whole weekend nothing. sunday into monday you see some showers east of us. clouds and then you see another brush as we head into friday. it's not a big deal just enough
