warm weather rolls into the bay area this weekend. >> with that warm weather though comes some danger along the bay and ocean. mornings on two starts now. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. there is ktvu mornings on two. >> welcome, it's saturday is january 24th. >> good morning. the weather definitely a talker this morning. let's take you outside and that is a live picture down soup.

the city of san jose as the sun starts to come up. get that little glow and maybe a little chilly out right now. things going to change as we move along on this saturday. >> rosemary said she is giddy over the weather. i have to till i felt like i should dress for a sunny day but it was still 45 degrees when i got in my car. you know i'm a wimp with that. >> some waking up with fog. gray and chilly for some. by the afternoon we are looking at very nice weatherw. he will be warm for the afternoon today. close to the coast we are talking mid to upper 70's for some near santa cruz, a live look across the bay. pointing toward the east where the sun is on its way. another 15 to 20 minutes before the official sunrise depending on where you live. getting in to a little bit of the fog that we don't see in this shot. i'm picking it up on storm tracker two. it's in our valley location. in the north bay. as well as in the east bay. areas concord, the stretch from

lafayette into antioch. we have visibility down to a half mile for some. shifting in to the north bay. santa rosa and napa as well as sonoma. this to be aware of as well. it'll pull back by midmorning. mostly sunny around the area. right now temperatures in the upper 50s. half moon bay starting out at 59. 52sfo. we have 47 haywood. livermore you are in at 41 degrees a bit of a cool start, afternoon highs for today. take a look at some of the numbers. we have temperatures ranging in the 60s to 70s. 70 for vallejo this afternoon. 67 in san francisco. 72 in oakland. as we get into the south bay temperatures in the low 70s in loss gatos upper 70's for santa cruz. many folks will take advantage of this spring like weather. allie is live from the oakland waterfront. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah. this is normally not the time of year you plan to do outdoor

activities. we are usually thinking about chilly weather, rain possibly but as you said it's not the case this weekend. definitely a lot of folks trying to take advantage of this warm weather we are having. that is where we are outside. we are in jack london square. we are with adrianna. she will tell us about some outdoor activities that you can take advantage of out here. how easy is it to come out on a whim and do something like this? you -- first tell us what you will show us. >> i'm on a stand up paddle board and jt is on a kayak. it's really user friendly. anyone can come down with an interest in water sports and picking up a new activity. we are here and we can get you set up. >> you do tutorials. you don't just give them the board and say hit the water. you explain how it works. >> we have someone that will help them get on their craft safely and give them all the equipment they need for -- my paddle board. i have a paddle and leash and

life jacket. then for kayaks a pad example spray kit. >> reporter: how much does business pick up on a nice weekend? supposed to be in the 70's here in january. you expect a lost business? >> yes. absolutely. on a nice day it picks up. we get eye lot of people renting and coming down and wanting to be on the water. >> reporter: there is a high surf advisory. rosemary mentioned it a while ago on the coast. how does that affect safety for people -- kayaking? >> we are usually not affected by those kind of things, especially during the winter. we are protected in the estuary. we have a lot of protected areas where we can get people safely on the water and enjoy a nice day. >> reporter: thank you. we will let you and jt go out and do your thing. as you mentioned if you are out here on the water at jack london square, not only is the weather nice but the conditions are great to goo it and try something like this. not the case if you are on the

coast because of that high surf advisory. they are warning people. only the most experienced to go out into the water. here it's a different story. back to you. >> yeah. they seen increase in business? people have weather on the brain and saying its time to take advantage of this? >> reporter: yeah. that's exactly what she was telling us. she said rentals always pick up. especially the beginners, because they see how nice the weather is and want to try something new. there you see here -- a lot of people will be out here doing exactly what you saw. >> sounds great. thank you. as you can see we have to talk act the -- about the drought. it's a reminder how severe the state drought is. east bay mud hoping that this time monthly rain totals for the area would be at nine inches. we haven't had a drop of rain. officials are left monitoring the shortage of snow and watching the reservoir levels. they say customers have helped

where mother nature didn't. people heeded calls and reduced water use by 13% last year. however, the district still plans to ask for a 15% cut rather this year. >> with the kind of warmer weather in the forecast people tend to use more water. its going to be a little harder this time to meet that goal. >> east bay mud is hoping for more rain before it has to make a difficult decision in april on whether or not to request an emergency water supply that would lead to a 14% increase in your water bill. in rainfall in the bay area means no snow in the sierra. one of the ski resorts shut down because of lack of snow. we will talk live to a resort working hard to stay open. we will talk act the steps its taking to keep those lifting running. >> police are looking for the man who republicanned a bur -- robbed a burrito shop. police say that the man entered, pulled out a gun and demanded cash . none of the

employee was hurt during the robbery. anyone with information is asked to call police. oakland police are searching for the driver who killed an elderly woman in a hit and run crash a security camera near the intersection of 18th and 15 15th recorded that crash around eight yesterday morning at the top of the screen you can see the woman walking from left to right about halfway across the street. that's when the car comes down 15th and hits her. the driver stops for about two seconds and takes off. the victim was an 80-year-old woman who lived nearby. neighbors say the roadss in this neighborhood are dangerous. >> they don't have to be drunk to be driving crazy. they just like -- people don't care. they don't look out for the pedestrians around them. >> investigators say they are looking for a newer model elantra, possibly light green or silver with the driver side front end damage. police in the south bay are also investigating a hit and

run. it happened just after 6:15 in south san jose. investigators haven't released details about the vehicle or the woman who was killed. they say they are interviewing possible witnesses. >> the measles outbreak is growing. state health officials say the number of cases has increased to 68. with 48 of those cases linked to an outbreak at disney. the numbers are expected to climb. people reported coming down with the disease after visiting the park last month. at least five employees have been diagnosed with measles. with the outbreak expected to grow hospitals are preparing for a -- for new cases. health care providers are being trained on what to look for. cases have been reported in three bay area counties, alameda, san mateo and santa clara. parents of school children in santa clara received letters about the outbreak . they want township date parents. the letter say there is are

only two reported cases right now and they are adults. officials say that the letter is information and meant to remind parents to make sure vaccines are up to date. the first flu death of the year has been reported in napa. the person was only described as an adult under the age of 65. the dement said that flu deaths are only reportable to the local pubic health authority when they happen in people under the age of 65 and that mean itself may underestimate the number of deaths. the cdc said the flu is still hitting hard but the number of new infections seems to be slowing down. according to the cdc11 children have died of the flu in the united states in the past week bringing the total number of child deaths this season to 56. the current vaccine disn 't match the strength of the virus that's circulating. still they are recommending people get the shot. >> this morning the military is looking in to a helicopter crash that killed two in south

ecal -- southern california. it went one in 29 palms. the two killed were the only ones on board. their names are being withheld until their relatives are told the military isn't saying much but that they are calling it a tragic accident. it happened during a training exercise. tributes are coming in for baseball legend ernie banks. oaf night wrigley field posted a sign honoring him. he was nicknamed mr. cub. he played 19 seasons, all with the cubs. he hit 512 home runs and was put in to the hall of fame in 1977. the cubs president called him a pioneer in the major leagues and the warmest and most sincere person he ever knew. he received the medal of freedom two year itss ago. there was no word on the cause of death. he was 83. some of the bingest stars -- biggest stars will continue filming in berkeley. its part of a movie about steve

i was up watching the warriorors last night. clay thompson in the record books. >> here is the front page. he romps to a record. he has achieved something nobody in the history of the nba had done, not jordon, not johnson, not byrd. >> play three. yeah it just kept happening. clay thompson scored a career high 52 points last night against the kings and in the third quarter he put on perhaps -- really the greatest shooting performance of all time. >> he made all 13 shots including a league record 9 and a quarter from three point range he also hit pot both of his free throws. an nba record for the most points in a quarter. the warriors had 41 points so he had 37 of them.

the chilly start will change. the closer you are to the coast the better the weather will be. some of us waking up with a little bit of fog this morning. not everybody enjoying the sunshine at this point. i think by ten or so those clouds start to erode. the fog will start to clear. we have mostly sunny for the afternoon. we have been talking about the high surf advisory. it'll go until sunday. it includes the entire coastline. we are talking from sonoma down into big sur. large breaking waves. the rip currents and sneaker waves. if you are going to be out near the water watch out for your little ones and be aware of that. fog wise we have quarter mile visibility in concord. this is where we are seeing it at its thickest right in this area. perhaps martinez and your travel along i-80 maybe thoroughfare field. going to be tough this morning. highway four as well. again once we clear out we have mostly sunny skies in store. today is a spare the air day. the air quality moderate to

slightly unhealthy. let's check in on some of the temperatures this morning. low 40s in napa. santa rosa slipping to 39. another cool start for you with the patchy fopping. 49 in oakland. 4747 haywood. then we check out half moon bay who is mostly clear and 59 degrees already at this hour. the afternoon highs for today going into the low 70's for you santa rose a.70 expected for napa. upper 60's san rafael. get in to the east bay temperatures will be cool to mild. areas like antioch. 64 degrees. not to bad. you get closer to the bay and take a look at these numbers. 72 oakland. oakland may be one of those place was very close to tying or breaking a record for the afternoon. 67 degrees expected in san francisco, upper 60's in pacifica. going to the south bay temperatures warm even more. we have upper 60s san jose. low 70s areas like gilroy. 71 loss gatos.

storm that's going to bring a mix of rain, sleet and snow. central pennsylvania is expected to get five to eight inches of snow, new york city could get up to four inches. people in boston could see up to six. areas of baltimore and washington are only expected to get rain, forecasters warning people to be careful as near freezing temperatures could cause slippery roadways out east. >> a 13 -year-old in tracy is recovering from bite wounds after being attacked by a police dog that escape from a police car. the boy was walking home on thursday night when the dog came running down the street and attacked him. he said that he found out the when he called his son right arch the attack and describes it as a terrifying moment he will never forget. >> he picks up the phone screaming that he has been attacked by a dog and he is screaming his head off and i ran outside and see all the noise down the street. >> he said that someone who was driving by stopped and pulled the dog off his son.

the teen suffered bites on his arm and bruises on his leg. tracy police say they have taken the dog automatic out of service. an investigation is underway to find out how the dog got out. >> e cigarettes are no longer allowed on bart and more restrictions on the smoking device appear to be on their way. late thursday night the board of directors banned the use of e cigarettes on trains and in stations and then yesterday the faa recommended that the smoking device not be allowed to be in checked bags a small heating element inside the rig cigarette can cause fires if it's accidentally triggered inside a bag. if would have to be where something was pressing on the battery and it was on for a long period of time and it didn't have a safety thing to shut it off. >> 74 cities in california have adopted new laws on the cigarettes and many more could follow. despite being a new technology they have grown into a business

maybe even summer this weekend. >> the unusually warm weather can also as we have seen before in the past cause dangerous situations out there by the beaches a high surf advisory is in effect from jenner down to the big sur coastline. >> that means people are just being warned to be on the look out for sneaker waves. the surf could also reach over 15 feet. we went to a surf spot in pacifica. very popular hang out. >> that is where we talked to a man riding the waves there for 50 years. >> i like waves about this big to about that big. anything bigger and let the young kids have them now. >> all right those large waves along the beaches can often slam over rock and into piers the national weather service is warning they are erratic. >> the high surf is often associated with rip tides that can be strong enough to snap a surf board in half. another popular definition is local hiking trails. because of the warm weather

clinton he is still apparently driving his own car. >> he is talking about this -- obviously the auto dealers. he was just saying he bought a ford fusion. also said that -- he had to take a two hour lesson to figure out how it works because of all the technology. its part of a fundraising blitz. its been called shock it off. trying to make other republican candidates like mitt romney think twice about entering the race. >> police in the south bay are searching for a man they say used a bomb threat to still drugs. since december 12th the same thief has hit a walgreens in mountain view and a rite aid in morgan hill. they have been looking for the man seen in the surveillance video. he came in to the walgreens and demanded drugs. two weeks later he struck again wearing a helmet as he robbed a morgan hill walgreens. then on the 11th of january he robbed this rite aid also in morgan hill. go of the thefts he left a bag

that he said held a bomb. >> he doesn't say a lot. sometimes it's written down. he has a device with him. he says he has a bomb. >> robbers is a quite man in his 50s between 5'11'' 1 and 6'2''. he wears a black motorcycle jacket with reflective stripes. sunglasses and a ski mask and all cases police say that he got away on a motorcycle. >> nearly all of the wine that was taken from the famous french laundry restaurant has been returned. 76 bottles were taken from during christmas when it was closed. the restaurant put the value of that wine at almost $300,000. the she have's department said someone in north carolina bought the bottles not knowing they were stolen. earlier this week the detectives brought 72 of them back. so far no arrests have been maid. it looks like guy fieri won't open a new winery. yesterday the county's board of

zoning adjustments rejected his plan. he had -- has two restaurants but wanted to build a 10,000 case winery in santa rose a. he wanted to build it -- you see the map, on willow side road but many were worried that it would disrupt the area. so the board rejected that plan after hours of public comments against it. >> we are now hearing from the man accused of killing two women on the peninsula back in the 70s as part of a serial hill case. we spoke to him at the county jail but no cameras were allowed. he said that he didn't do it. even though authorities say his dna was found at the scene. when asked about that said dna is not the smoking gun that everybody wants it to be. he did say that he is guilty of another crime. after escaping in the 80's he said he stole a car and traveled to oregon where he admitted to stabbing and injuring a woman. >> time to bring this man to justice for the murders that we

can clearly prove at this point and bring some closure to the families as best we can. >> authorities say they believe he committed the bay area killings while out on bail for other crimes in nevada and before he was convicted of raping a woman in 1976. the da is seeking a life sentence. investigators are trying to figure out what caused that mystery goo that's killed more than 150 birds along the coastline. 322 birds have been brought into the international bird rescue. the birds that are expected to survive will be recovering at that center for the next few weeks. volunteers continue to team up with the east bay regional park district to rescue more. according to the east bay regional park district the threat does appear to be over. the homeless program is looking for volunteers who can help count the homeless population. that information is important because it's used to help provide services to the homeless. volunteers are going to work four hour shifts.

they will interview people at locations at health care facilities and soup kitchens. volunteers do have to attend a two hour training session before starting. problems at a city park in san rafael are so bad that the mayor said he needses to shut it down. that starts monday and it'll last for at least 30 days. the mayor said that the city has an influx of complaints about boyd memorial. he said it's with the homeless who are doing drugs, littering and drinking. >> very personally seen what appeared to be alleged exchange of narcotics. narcotics and folks doing thing that are just not allowed in public parks. >> one person, bad person, messes it up for all of us. that's basically what happens. >> the city council will take up the closure at its next

meeting. >> unemployment rate is the lowest in almost six years. the state rate dropped to 7% in december. that's two tenths of a percent better than november. the rate has not been that low since before the start of the recession in 2008. the state employment development department said 700 jobs were added last month. the edd also said that california has added more than one and a half million jobs since 2010. here in the bay area the rate is well below the state average. marin has the lowest rate at 3.4%. 3.4% sonalo has the highest rate out of all nine bay area counties at 6.1%. their rate has improved since november when it was at 6.5%. >> alabama's attorney general wants a judge to put a ruling that overturns the state ban on gay marriage on hold. yesterday a us district judge struck down alabama's ban on same sex marriage. that after two women sued the state for failing to recognize the couple's union.

a man there san francisco has completed the world marathon challenge. it's unintensive race that required tim durbin to run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. about as dozen runners took part in the event. he was the only american and he said he ran every mile. pretty amazing. that trip started in isn't art kayaks and moved to chile and more. it ended on friday in sydney. he said that his main reason for running was to raise money for cancer research. mcdonalds is making changes after the company reported that it's profit fell 21% last quarter. it's trying to bring back customers and the chain is letting local operators to have more say in menu items. it's focusing on items like build your own burger. some say it needs to get back to the basics like keeping prices down. >> when they start messing

people flying kites a lot of open space. don't let this shot fool you. the waves impressive. there is a high surf advisory issued by the national weather service in effect until three tomorrow. the waves could get between ten to 12 feet and combined swells could be as high as 15 feet. it's a similar story at other surf spots. some surfers deciding to sit it out and just watch the waves instead of heading in. water sports experts say conditions like this, the ones we are having at the coastline this weekend are not for beginners. >> high surf advisory you must be an expert. it's to dangerous. the force of the ocean is powerful. people don't realize it. you have to be an expert. >> you can see -- earlier this morning we saw a coast guard vehicle. probably watching out for any

down hits her. the driver stops for about two seconds and then takes off. police say that the victim was an 80-year-old woman who lived nearby. the roads in the this neighborhood are quite dangerous. investigators say they are looking for a anier model elantra. police in the south bay are investigating a deadly hit and run crash. that happened just after 6:15 last flight. investigators have not released details about the vehicle or the woman who was killed. they say they are still interviewing witnesses. >> the measles outbreak is growing. state health officials same the number of cases has increased to 68 with 48 of those linked to ha outbreak in disneyland. public health officials say the numbers are expected to climb. people reported coming down with the measles after visiting the park last month. at least five disney employees have been diagnosed with

measles. with the outbreak expected to grow hospitals trying to prepare for the new cases of the measles. health care providers being trained on what to look for. so far measles have been reported in three counties, alameda, san mateo and santa claire a. parents of school children in santa clara got letters about the outbreak the office of education said it wants to update parents about the situation and the letter said right now there are only two reported cases in santa clara and they are adults. officials say the letter is meant to just be informational and meant to be a reminder to parents to make sure their children's recordses are up to date. the first flu death of the year has been reported the person was only described as an adult under the age of 65. the department said that flu deaths only reportable to the local public health authority when they happen in people under 65. that means reports could underestimate the number of deaths in the county. and the cdc said that the

this morning. >> reporter: hi. you know i knew i would be out on the beach this morning covering weather so i brought my flip-flops but it's still a little to chilly to put them on. there is a bit of a breeze. i don't want to take off my coat or jacket. you can bet that will change later this morning. the weather here is supposed to be warm. talking about it being chilly a guy over there just started a fire out here on the beach just to keep warm. there is people heading to the water. we have seen people flying kites. there is also some surfers getting in to the water even this early in the morning don't let this beautiful shot fool you. there is a high surf advisory in effect and getting out in to the water can be dangerous. waves are supposed to be between ten and 12 feet combined swells could be as high as 15 feet and we saw some coast guard boats patrolling the coastline. checking it out. making sure nobody gets in to trouble the water sport experts

that are especially tricky here at ocean watch. he said the rip current kept pushing him north and he wasn't able to catch waves because of it. this high surf advisory is in effect until 3:00 tomorrow. waves will get from 10 to 12 feet high. combined seas could reach as high as 15 feet because of a storm churning off the coast out in the pacific. we did see coast guard boats patrolling the shoreline here at ocean beach making sure no one gets in trouble. we've seen a number of surfers heading into the water. talking to water sports experts, they're saying if you're not an expert surfer, this isn't the best weekend to go out and try this sort of thing for the first time. a little later on this morning, we're going to be talking with san francisco fire chief kai ali. she's going to be talking about beach safety and the type of rescues they typically have to do when the weather gets nice like this. everyone's saying if you're not an expert surfer, not an expert paddle border you probably don't want to head out this morning.

decide on whether or not to request an emergency water supply. that would lead to a 14% increase in your wate water bill. police in walnut creek are looking for the man who robbed a burrito shop at gunpoint last night at free bird's. the man entered the store, pulled out a gun and demanded cash. none of the employees were injured during the robbery, and anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police. oakland police are searching for the driver who killed an elderly woman in a hit and run crash. a security camera near the intersection of 18th avenue and 15th street recorded this crash around 8:00 yesterday morning. at the top of the screen there's a woman walking from left to right about halfway across the street. that's when the car comes down 15th and without slowing down hits her. the driver stopped for 2 seconds and then takes off. now police say the victim was an 80-year-old woman who lived nearby. a neighbor says the roads in that neighborhood, he says they're quite dangerous. investigators say they're

looking for a newer model elantra, light green or silver with a driver side front end damage. police in the south bay are investigating a deadly hit and run cash. this one happened after 6:15 last night near via monte drive in south san jose. investigators have not released details about the vehicle or the woman who was killed. they say they are still interviewing possible witnesses. the measles outbreak in california still growing. state health officials say the number of cases has increased to 68 with 48 of those cases linked to that scout break at disney land. public health officials say those numbers expect today climb. people did report coming down with measles after visiting the park last month. at least five disney employees have been diagnosed with measles. with the outbreak expected to grow, bay area hospitals are preparing for any new cases. according to the san francisco chronicle health care providers are being trained on just what to look out for. so far measles cases have been

reported in three bay area counties. alameda, san mateo and santa clara. parents of school children in santa clara county got letters telling them about the outbreak. the office of education says the presidents to update parents about the situation. according to that letter right now there are only two reported cases in santa clara county and they are adults. officials say the letter is meant to be informational. it's also meant to be a reminder for parents to make sure their children's immunizations are up to date. the first flu death of the year has been reported in napa county. that person only described as an adult under the age of 65. the department says flu deaths are only reportable to local public health authorities when they occur in people under age 65. that means reports could under estimate the number of actual flu deaths in the county. the center for disease control says the flu is still hitting the u.s. hard, but the number of new infections seem it be slowing down from week to week. 11 children have died of the flu in the u.s. in the past

75 feet. i don't really know about how fast we go because there's so many jumps, but it's pretty exciting when we're out there. there's a lot of jumps. there's a lot of banging bars, a lot of action, and it's good fun. >> what about banging each other? sometimes i see this on fox sports 1 but when it's televised you can see them banging left and right. how many are during a qualifying event? like 20? >> there's about 80 that try to make the actual race, and then there's 40 that get to race in the show, and then 20 that get into the main. so we just kind of weed everyone down as it goes. >> one of the things before we got on to this interview i looked up just kind of attendance. i mean last year in oakland it was like 45, 46,000 people. it took me by surprise. how popular is this sport? is it gaining popularity across the country as we go through these tours? >> i think it's growing. i always get new fans and it's just crazy like the followers i get and everyone that tells me good luck and stuff, and every

year it seems to get bigger and bigger. >> that's you right there? >> correct, correct, yeah. >> it gets bigger and bigger. what do you tell people who have never been? if someone's sitting at home, cal's playing arizona tonight, it's a big game in the bay area, they maybe want to watch that. if you're trying to recruit them to the coliseum to see you and your fellow competitors, what do you say? what's the rush of coming out? >> you know, i would say you already know what's going to happen at the cal game, and dirt biking is something new you're going to see guys flying through the air, banging bars. there's going to be crashes. there's always crashes. it's just a great sport, and i don't think they get a lot of credit that they deserve, the guys that race. they're dedicated athletes and you're seeing the best in the world. >> talk about a lot of crashes. have you crashed yourself. worst injury you've had. >> broken my femur four times. >> nice, just four? >> yeah, so hit the ground a

quite a different scene out there on the east coast where people are preparing for a big storm this weekend that's going to bring a mix of rain, sleet and snow. central pennsylvania expected to get 5 to 8 inches of powder. new york city could get up to 4 inches. people in boston up to 6 inches. areas in baltimore and washington only expected to see the rain. forecasters are warning drivers to be careful as those freezing temperatures could cause slippery roadways back east. this morning the military is looking to a real copter

crash that killed two marines in southern california. the chopper went down yesterday afternoon in san bernardino county. the two marines who were killed were the only ones on board and their names are being withheld until their relatives are notified. the military's not saying much about the crash except that they're calling it a tragic accident that happened during a training exercise. tributes are pouring in for baseball legend ernie banks. chicago's wrigley field posted a sign honoring mr. banks who was nicknamed mr. cub. he was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in 1977. president obama and the first lady issued a statement which included that one of michelle obama favorite memories was watching television with her dad and banks playing for their hometown cubs. president obama presenting banks two years ago with the presidential medal of freedom. there is no word yet on the cause of death. ernie banks was 83. e-cigarettes are no longer allowed on b.a.r.t.

and more restrictions on the smoking device appear to be on their way. the b.a.r.t. board of directors banned the use of e-cigarettes on trains and in stations. yesterday the faa also recommended that the smoking device no longer be allowed in checked baggage. a small heating element inside the e cig has the ability to cause fires when it's accidentally triggered inside a bag. >> it would have to be in an extreme situation where something was probably pressing on to the battery and it was on for a long period of time, and it didn't have a safety mechanism to shut it off. >> 74 cities in california have adopted new laws on e- cigarettes and many more could soon follow despite being a relatively new technology, e- cigs have already grown into a billion dollars business. the movie the interview makes its debut on netflix today. >> hello north korea! >> that controversial comedy about two journalists sent to

this morning. >> oakland police are searching for the driver who killed an elderly woman in a hit and run crash. a security camera near the intersection of 18th avenue and 15th street recorded that crash around 8:00 yesterday morning. police say the victim was an 80- year-old woman who lived nearby. and the first flu death of the year has been reported in napa county. the person was only described as an adult under the age of 65. the department says that flu deaths are only reportable to local public health authorities when they occur in people under 65, which means reports could actually under estimate the number of actual flu deaths in the county. a high surf advisory is in effect for the entire bay area coastline through tomorrow afternoon. the surf could reach more than 15 feet. they are often associated with those rip tides and could be powerful enough to snap a surfboard in half. warning to all those surf furs and swimmers out there and people just walking, don't turn your back to the ocean. >> it's good to know too. it always seems like a good idea to get in. you've got to be careful. >> on days like this for sure.

usual and they also said the rip tides were especially tricky this morning because of that high surf advisory. waves 10 to 12 feet high. national weather says combined could get up to 15 feet high. this is the type of day when the san francisco fire department, the coastal rescue division gets busy. are you expecting to respond to some calls. >> yes, we're expecting locals and tourists like to visit the beach today because of the warm weather. >> and when the 9-1-1 call comes in that someone needs help at the beach, how do you guys respond? >> normally the coastal rescue units will respond, and we have all the necessary gear. we have kayaks. we have boards. we have boogie boards. we have swimmers more importantly. every day on duty we have those who respond to the beach and get in and rescue the person in distress. >> firefighters shoot up in their wet suits and help people

speech as an opportunity for him to distinguish himself across america. >> i thought he was just an inspiring leader you know, and he comes from such an experienced familiest and wonderful to see that tradition continue. >> the speech seemed to go over pretty well. he did get a standing ovation. he did take the opportunity to take a few swipes at california mentioning a couple of other things in terms of taxation and regulations and even boasting that florida students scored higher than california students. this is all part of a shock and awe fund-raising blitz, 60 events. the goal to, you know, just make other candidates who are also trying to raise money think twice about entering the race. >> let the fun begin. we'll see how it all plays out in years to come. in other news police in the south bay are searching for a man who they say uses a bomb threat to steal oxycodone and other prescription drugs. since december 12th, the same thief has hit a walgreen's in mountain view and a walgreen's in rite aid in morgan hill.

police have been looking for this man seen in this surveillance video. in december investigator says he came into this walgreen's in mountain view and demanded drugs. two weeks later they say he struck again wearing a helmet as he robbed a walgreen's in morgan hill. then on january 11th police say he robbed a rite aid also in morgan hill. in two of the thefts he left a bag that he said held a bomb. >> he doesn't say a lot of words. sometimes it's written down, but he has a device with him and tells them he has a bomb. >> he's described as a white man in his 50s between 5-11 and 6-2. he wears a black motorcycle jacket with reflective stripes. he has sun glasses and a ski mask. in all the cases he got away on a motorcycle. nearly all of the wine that was stolen from the famous french restaurant has been returned. 76 bottles were stolen from the wine cellar during christmas.

the restaurant put the value of that wine at almost $300,000. the sheriff's department said someone in north carolina bought those bottles not knowing they'd been stolen. they've now been given back. detectives brought 72 of those 76 bottles back. no arrests have been made. guy fieri will not be opening a new winery in sonoma county. yesterday the board of zoning adjustments unanimously rejected his plan. fieri already has two restaurants but want today build a 10,000 case winery in santa rosa. he wanted to build it along willow side road. many residents said they were worried that that winery would disrupt the area. the board did reject that plan after hours of public comments against it. we're hearing now from the man accused of killing two women in the peninsula back in the '70s as part of the gypsy hill serial murder case. we spoke with rodney halbower at the county jail in redwood city. no cameras were allowed during the interview. he did tell us he didn't do it,

even though authorities say his dna was found at the scene. when asked about the dna he said "dna is not the smoking gun that everyone wants it to be." he did say that he is guilty of another crime after escaping prison back in the 80s he told us he stole a car and traveled to oregon where he admits he stabbed and injured a woman. >> it is time to bring this man to justice for the murders that we can clearly prove at this point and bring some closure to the families as best we can. >> authorities say they believe halbower committed the bay area killings while out on bail for other crimes in nevada and right before he was convicted of raping a nevada woman in 1976, the san mateo county district attorney is seeking a life in prison sentence. police in morgan hills say teenagers may be responsible for offensive graffiti at a local elementary school. the graffiti at paradise valley elementary included swastikas. other messages referred to drugs leers and a local high

country he recorded this morning's weekly address. >> wages are finally starting to rise again. let's keep that going. let's do more to restore the length between hard work and growing opportunity for every american. >> echoing tuesday's state of the union address, president obama says a strong middle class is vital to a growing economy. that means making it easier to afford child care, college, health insurance, and a house. california's unemployment rate is the lowest it's been in almost six years. the state unemployment rate dropped to 7% in december. that's 2/10 of a percent better than november. the rate has not been that low since before the start of the recession in 2008. the state employment development departments says 700 jobs were added last month. the edd also says california has added more than 1 1/2 million jobs since 2010. right here in the bay area, the unemployment rate is well below the state average. marin county has the lowest rate at 3.4%.

san francisco and san mateo counties are less than 4%. solano has the highest unemployment rate of all at bay area counties at 6.1%. their rate has improved since november when it was at 6.5%. contra costa's homeless program is looking for volunteers who can help count the homeless population. the information is used to help the county provide services to the homeless. >> volunteers will work four- hour shifts interviewing people at locations such as food distribution sites, health care facilities and soup kitchens. volunteers have to attend two- hour training session before starting. the problems at a city park in san rafael have gotten so bad that the mayor says enough is enough. he's shutting it down. the closure starts monday and will last at least 30 days. mayor gary phillips says the city has gotten an influx of complaints about boyd memorial park. the problems he says are with the homeless in the parks doing drugs, drinking and littering.
