grass fire. >> scary over night incident at the white house. the discovery on white house grounds that caused a lock down early this morning. >> congestion and detours may be part of your commute. it's all to make way for bart coming to the south bay. we'll tell you wham areas are impacts and for how long. >> a 250-mile stretch of the northeast is preparing for a pep potentially historic storm. how it's effecting bay area travelers this morning. we are following that breaking news out of pacifica. we want to take you back out there live where you can see what looks like a pretty big grass fire. it is burning near tara nova

hospital. we understand it's very close to some homes there in pacifica. we will get an update in a moment. steve paulson has the forecast. how many times a day do people stop you on the street and ask you for rain? >> we had a little party yesterday and five people asked me that. what is going on? >> i had people ask me are we going to get anymore rain? >> i was looking in pacifica, i can't find much of a breeze. january we're having a grass fire. partly cloudy, patchy fog. not as much as yesterday. william said clear today after acold, cold weekend. i will buy that.

it was cold if you were in that fog. mostly cloudy. cloudy to the south. tonight as clouds roll in from southern california, and old mexico. up from baja which from the end of january is not something i would ever thought i would say. so there is still some of that component of an easterly breeze. clouds roll in and maybe some rain late tonight and more likely tomorrow. turning cloudy. 50s and 60s to near 70 degrees. all right sal pacifica. the fire that is going on there. >> yeah that is right. it's a fire here. we do have live pictures of it. our crew is there. you can see that it's pretty big fire and some homes may have been evacuated. that is what we are getting now. we are waiting for an official word. one resident told us her street

gilroy. tara moriarty is joining us now from the store. this seneca my know where the infected person shopped. also might not have been the only place where this person went. >> reporter: we are hearing reports the infected person shopped at a walmart. we reached out to the health department. we are hoping to get more information for you. the notices are up. a warning that someone shopped here at the costco last sunday between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.. that is when the health department says exposure was possible. it wants shoppers to be alert for symptoms. >> my daughter has been immunized. >> i don't even know what it is. >> we'll pull it up on the internet and i will show you. >> reporter: disney land theme parks in anaheim are where most

the measle cases have stemmed from. measle symptoms are usually mild at first. a runny nose, cough, wateries, and low fever. and then the fever worsens and a rash starts on the face and spreads. >> no one can recover it fully. anyone who thinks they may be infected is urged to call their doctor or clinic first before heading in. simply because you don't want to expose all of those people in the waiting room. tara moriarty back to you. >> pretty scary. thank you. as tara mentioned, most of the measles cases stem from a break out at disney theme parks. there are 78 reported cases now in seven states in mexico. 68 of those cases are here in california. nine in the bay area. those numbers are expected to climb and that outbreak is believed to have starred when

an infected person likely from out of the country visited the parks between december 15th and 20th. secret service investigating a small drone found on the white house grounds. these are the emergency crews responding early this morning. white house spokesman says the drone is not an ongoing threat. president obama and michelle obama are not home. they are on a trip to india. today will be the first time south bay drivers will have to deal with a busy intersection being closed. it's part of the work to bring the bart extension to san jose. the closure is expected to last nearly one year. janine de la vega is joining us from san jose with information on how drivers may be able to get around this. but boy, it is a listening time. >> it is. this area being impacted is located in northeast san jose.

this is the intersection near sierra avenue. you can see they already have the orange signs up and cones blocking the traffic here. this is completely closed off to pedestrian and vehicle traffic for the next nine months. we have already seen a lot of cars do u-turns here because the drivers didn't know about the closure. a deep trench is being built in the area for the future bart system to travel below the excavation. the transportation authority says this is one of the more complicated intersections. the vta has set up detours and the 77 bus line is also being rerouted to that street. people who live in the bay area are concerned about traffic congestion. those that work nearby also worry about it driving away customers. >> probably not going to be good because you won't get a lot of track. >> reporter: some worry it may

have an impact on students who attend nearby elementary school who often work in the now impacted area. it may add a half a mile or a mile to their trip. the intire silicon -- back to you. >> thank you janine. we'll be here to help them get around that. a monster winter storm on the east coast and it could impact us here in the bay area. from connecticut to washington, d.c. many areas could get up to three feet of snow starting today and many cab ling flights.

a scary situation yesterday for passengers on three flights because of security concerns. the two planes involved were a jet blue flight from long beach and a regional sky west jet. they were evacuated at seattle c-tack airport. delta airlines flight was diverted to dallas. now the airline said they received what appeared to be credible threats about the those flights. >> pilot came on and said i never had this happen before but i was told just now there was a credible threat to this plane. because then everybody paid attention. >> the planes were checked out too. they were eventually cleared and put back into service. specific details about what the threats were or who may have sent them, they have not been released just yet. the man accused of the

gypsy hill killings that shocked the bay area is set to enter a plea today in a redwood city courtroom. rodney will be charged with murdering 17 and 18-year-old girls in 1976. the killings happened during a course of a rape and dna linked him to the crimes. teenagers deaths are among six connect connected to a strick of serial killings. it happened yesterday at a birthday party at a home on vienna street. firefighters say two men and a woman were leaning against the wood railing when it suddenly collapsed. they fell 20 feet down on to a concrete patio. >> the more people falling down and who knows how you fall.

you can have serious injuries that can cause death. but in this case they don't appear to be life threatening. >> the victims broke some bones. they are being treated for that. the railing was rotting. the whole deck will be examined to see if it's up to code. a sex abuse case against the boy scouts is set to get under way in southern california. coming up in 28 minutes, what some of the evidence could reveal about the organizations efforts to protect children and report abuse. but first feeding the homeless in san francisco. what is behind an effort to give out hundreds of muffins.

minorities in tech companies that are dominated by white men. new jersey's republican governor chris christie taking the first step toward a presidential run in 2015. [ technical difficulties ] today happens to be national muffin day. kaufman and other volunteers plan to hand out 300 muffins if the homeless. and kaufman will give $10 to project homeless connect to anyone who gives out muffins and posts the #givemuffins.

getting you out the door. sal is watching the roads. how does it look? >> we are looking okay. remember in pacifica we have road closures because of this large wild land fire that is burning behind homes near fasler avenue. some of the streets are closed in the area. this is near tara nova high school. this is a fur alarm fire and the smoke you can can smell it all over pacifica and parts of the peninsula there. you are probably going to be aware of it. we to have a large fire response and we have our crew there obviously. we are going to tell you a little bit more about this as it develops. some homes have been evacuated and the school some of the roads are approaching that school have been shut down. you can see the fire is still clearly burning. we don't have any word on

start to 2015 for january. after 2014 was the driest ever. at .06. and then unless we get rain tomorrow, we are going to set a record. never in 166 years of recordkeeping did they have a dry january. usually we get some pretty good rain. last year .06. the year before that .09. how can you be positive? well, it can't get any worse than this year. a lot of cloud cover coming up. still patchy fog. not as much as yell. cloud cover streaming up. next two days there could be very light rain. mainly up in the sierra. and about san jose santa cruz mountains south.

that is probably the extent of it. we'll keep an eye on it. at least the cloud cover will be there. 30s will in the lower elevations. 50s in the higher elevations. low coming up and the cold air plunging in behind that. already i think 63 flights sfo. dave and pam. i think 75 down in l.a.. lax. they are already gearing up for this. they have seen patrol geeks of 2-3 feet of snow. that is the cold air coming in behind that. it looks like everyone is coming behind that. we see some rain moving up. so that is the key. this is our only hope.

as soon as tomorrow. mons air in arizona is renting out rooms to fans going to sunday's super bowl. the nuns say hay it's a perfect fit. they are located just five miles from the university of phoenix stadium. they say hospitality is the mission of the sisters of st. benedict. the sisters have eight rooms to recent at $300 a night with a three night minimum. they are also offering tarry treat house for $3500 for the week. but the sisters say they won't put in a special prayer for either team. >> no smoking, no drinking, no swearing, and all the money from the rentals will go to support the sister's work with the needy. the cow palace in daly city was filled with hundreds of

tomorrow. >> south bay, santa cruz mountains. from southern california. if you have any information, pacifica, daly city any reports on the wind there i've had a couple of reports. it's occasionally strong. we do have partly cloudy skies. the fog is nothing compared to what it was over the weekend. when it was bone chilling cold. partly cloudy. patchy fog. mostly cloudy. and turn to the south. not monsoon moisture but a low formed off of baja. there will be rain. 40s for 50s. santa rosa is still 46. east win. there san easterly component toward half-moon bay. it does not look that strong. at least on these areas that have i seen. the big news continues to be

nor easter. for us we will keep an eye on this moisture. it will give us a lot of clouds. highs in the 50s and 60s and 70s. patchy fog. look for the clouds to increase cool to mild to warm. update on the pacifica? >> that is right we do have that fire that will be effecting all of pacifica. you can smell the smoke. you can hear the fire engines responding. it is now a six alarm fire. we got that confirmed from a public information spokesman. there is plenty of resources. it's right here in this area of pacifica. fasler avenue is closed. fasler is closed all the way down from the gas station there highway 1 and you can't get in. one of the things we want you

to know, this is effecting 60- 80 homes that have been evacuated. and it's very close to tara nova high school. our crew is there. we'll have a live report from the scene coming up soon. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see traffic is beaked up from the beyond the mccarthur maze. about a 20 minute delay. 280 northbound in san jose getting a little more crowded as you drive from downtown into the valley. the time is 6:33. let's go back to the desk. we are following the breaking news coming in from pacifica where a vegetation fire, a grass fire is burning dangerously close to several homes. we just found out 80-90 homes have been evacuated. this is all in the area of sasler -- fasler avenue. the fire started at 3:30 this morning. there is no word if any of the homes are burning.

i want to show you video from the scene as emergency crews responded this morning. the drone is not an ongoing threat. president obama are not at home at this time. google make changes to a popular traffic app. alex savidge is in our studio now. there is big safety concerns. >> millions of drivers use the ways app to navigate around traffic troubles. which allows users to generate information about the exact location of police officers and this is what law enforcement officials are concerned about. the national sheriffs association is urging google

which owns ways to disable the police reporting feature. which one called the stocker. there are no known connections between the waze app and police officers. google has declined to comment on this issue. a spokesperson for waze says the company thinks deeply and it has generated strong reaction. usually alerts drivers to speed traps. and many people believe this has more to do with traffic tickets and less to do with officer safety.

welcome back. we want to take you back to the breaking news in pacifica. a grass fire has forced the evacuation of dozens of homes. the fire started just before 4:00 this morning. it's burning not far from tara nova high school. that is where brian flores you are on the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: hi, pam, good morning. we just got an update from the pio here with the north county fire authority who says right now the fire is at six alarms. i want to take a look here. a live picture now.

the flames have been going on since just before 4:00 this morning. 80-90 homes have been evacuated. and those residents are being told to go to the pacifica community center which is located on 540 crestby. firefighters continue to battle this fire that started just before 4:00 this morning. several different fire fighting groups. when nay battle this fire, obviously the winds we've been talking about all morning. roughly 15 miles an hour at last check from the pio here said in the northwest direction. it's heading toward more vegetation. i asked if that was good news. it's not blowing toward any homes. there are homes that are very close if where the fire is burning right now. still unclear how it started this morning. that remains under investigation. obviously the priority is to get the fire under control. 80-90 residents have been

evacuated. they have being told to go to the community center. again several agencies are here as well. this is a six alarm fire. they are continuing to battle this fire. guys back to you. >> what act the wind out there? we heard mixed reports. >> reporter: yeah. it's pretty gusty. the latest we heard was 15 miles an hour in the northwest direction. steve will have more information on that. and he's got the information there. but the gusts aren't too bad right now. it is blowing in an offshore direction. again it's continuing to be a little bit of a problem for firefighters this morning. they are also concerned about the embers that are blowing as well. they are staying on top of this fire. again residents evacuated and we will stay on top of this. >> yeah boy the embers.

that is for sure. it's dry out there. thank you. 6:47 is the time. wildlife volunteers continue to work around the clock to clean birds impacted by that mysterious goo in the east bay waters. the wildlife center in fairfield says more than 320 birds have been rescued about 250 are actually still at the center needing more cleaning and treatment. volunteers say they have 2-3 weeks of work to be done and this is very expensive. they are spending $9500 a day. they are also expecting a water bill up to $30,000. they are looking for donations. >> yeah. time is 6:48. let's check in with tori campbell. >> good morning. coming up on mornings on 2, at the end of the day a park in san rafael is off limits for a month. it's part of a massive cleanup

effort. keeping private information private. one week after coming under fire for a sharing personal data from the obama care website, find out what the federal government is saying. those are some of the stories we are working on for mornings on 2. escaped prisoner back in custody after he tried to break into the house of a family who fought back. >> could see through the. >> it was wild. it was that prisoner whoescaped from a nearby hospital. >> daddy yelled lock the door. lock the door. mama wouldn't. >> it was then i heard somebody pounding on our back doors of our home. like trying to enter the home.

and at that point my fear was being trapped inside my house with somebody and being a hostage with my child. >> her husband grabbed a t-ball bat from the garage. he used it to knock the prisoner on to the ground and held him there until police arrived. we want to check back in with sal. pacifica it could be a problem. >> yeah. i do want to mention that the trip to the bay bridge this morning is getting more crowded. you can see around the curve here at the mccarthur maze the waiting is done here. as we look at the capitol plaza, you can see it looking through. we've been talking about this fire in pacifica. fassler avenue is closed from

highway 1. so you can't get your car in. there are some police officers there that are helping. 80-90 homes have been evacuated but again this is also effecting highway 1. northbound highway 1 are slow to pacifica. don't drive through pacifica. all right let's go to the weather center. here is steve. a couple reports about 10- 15 sal on the breeze. brian flores said 15. my guess it's more east, southeast, east more than west. beautiful sunrise for those that are listening. you are listening but you're not watching. you're listening. that is a beautiful sunrise. a lot of high clouds coming up. where are those coming from?

pacific northwest? no. records on sunday. richmond and lake tahoe. 66 degrees. it was still very warm. monterey 84. so if you are on the coast, it was nice. if you are stuck will in that fog, i get it. i was there myself. it was very cold. but peninsula, south bay and the coast were beautiful this weekend. if we don't get any rain it looks like the driest january ever with no rain at all for san francisco. it's really hard to wrap your arms around. because it's not something you see. it sure looks like it. cloud cover coming up from southern california. there will be rain down there if you are heading down there.

there is already some. looks more likely tonight. more likely the san joaquin valley and up toward the sierra nevada. santa cruz mountains, san jose, santal claire ram looks to be the cut off. it does not look like much. there is zero rain on sfo. which is probably true. 30s, 40s, and 50s on the temps. we are still holding on to a few. lafayette in there and moraga. antioch and brentwood were. east, northeast or easterly component still in place. we are not done with that yet. this cloud cover all cool us off a little bit. two to three feet of snow looks likely. it's all coming together. all the way up to boston.

amazing video. final seconds of a flight that was supposed to go from tracy to maui. the pilot noticed he didn't have enough fuel to finish the fright. his plane had a special pair shoot he deployed. he had to ditch his plane in the water. the coast guard sent two planes to search for the plane and a cruise ship was diverted to pick up the pilot. the coast guard says he is in
