to flee as flames grew close to their homes. i am ken wayne, frank somerville is off tonight. >> jet propulsion laboratory julie -- i am julie haener. fire season may nut be -- may not be a season at all anymore. ktvu's noelle walker is live in pacifica with what she learned from investigators. >> reporter: this fire caught a lot of people off guard. because it happened in january. well outside a time frame we think of as fire season. >> reporter: on a clear january morning -- >> best weather is in january. what it is like now. >> reporter: he had water flowing through his property. >> my backyard is the fire buffer. >> reporter: this is what he woke up to at 3:30 a.m. this morning.

a wildfire eating its way through the dry brush. dozens of homes were evacuated. they packed up. >> cello. baby clothes. >> reporter: photo albums. anything important. all day a welcome symphony of chainsaws. >> got to get used to it. the hills are dry. >> reporter: this is the time of year for floods, not fires. >> this is turning into southern california where the fire season runs all year long and i am hoping this isn't our new normal. >> if it is there is a new normal to be prepared as well. >> this is the time you prep for the summer. as it is, this is the time to prep for now on a day like today. >> reporter: so they were able to contain the fire at 6 acres without losing homes. police and fire are investigating what caused the

fire but i asked is there anything that could explain a fire in that location at that time of day that isn't suspicious, and he shook his head no. >> noelle walker live in pacifica. thank you. a woman was hit and killed by street racers who lost control and crashed in san jose. just after noon. police say the drivers were racing each other when one or both lost control and slammed into each other. that sent the car towards the woman and pinned her against a tree. she was pronounced dead at the scene. the drivers have been arrested and could face manslaughter charges. police are looking into the actions of two officers after a man was shot and wounded. surveillance video shows two armed robbers last wednesday night. police say after the robbers grabbed the money they shot the owner's nephew.

the ener says -- owner said police arrived within 2 minutes but the officers took photos and didn't give him first aid. a police commander says he wasn't aware of that and will review the video and speak with the officers. new at 6:00 p.m. a plan to make a busy street safer for bikes and pedestrians. but as ktvu's rob roth found many business owners and residents don't like what they could be losing. parking. >> reporter: those living or working near polk street say parking is already almost impossible. >> you circle around the block 8 times. >> reporter: if a proposal becomes reality there may be fewer places to park. it is one of the most dangerous in the city for those who ride and walk. >> there were 122 people that were injured while working or

biking. >> reporter: the agency is proposing building a raised protected bike lane and an unprotected bike lane for another 10 blocks. it would at other safety measures but eliminate 170 parking places. >> they will increase safety for everyone but we are also working to increase lighting, put in new landscaping. >> these are narrow streets. >> reporter: this owner worries about receiving his deliveries and about his customers. >> a business like mine that sells paint, lumber and all that you can't carry it on the bus, you can't walk with it on the hills. you do need to have a car. >> reporter: this biker says he likes the idea. >> you have 2, 3 feet in between parked cars and people going over the speed limit.

you know, a lot of cabs pulling over, people double parked. that would be awesome. >> reporter: the san francisco bicycle coalition says it will confuse drivers and doesn't go far enough to protect bikers. the vote is expected next month. in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. a public hearing on the bicycle and ped safety plan is set for later this weekend. two girls are out of the hospital after being shot in santa cruz. they were sitting in a parked car talking to men when two other men pulled up and started shooting following an argument. a 17-year-old girl was hit in the arm and a 16-year-old was grazed on her back. police are looking for more witnesses. the northeast is bracing for a major blizzard. several feet of snow is expected up and down the east

coast. here is a live picture of times square. in a few hours the roads will be shut down and only emergency trucks will be allowed. more than 7,000 flights have been canceled. in the bay area 51 cancellation and oakland and san jose one year. what is it like out there right now? >> reporter: i tell you what, we got out here about 3:00 p.m. today and it was coming down real hard. started to make sense what mayor bill de blasio was talking about, one of the worse storms of all times. i had an understanding of why there was a state of emergency in place. over the last four hours you are not seeing a lot. really just feels like flurries

here. but people have emphasized in the weather word, meteorologist and the national weather service, this storm -- world meteorologist and the national weather service, this storm will hit hard this evening, expecting to see a down fall of snow and that is what has new york city appearing like a ghost town and people hunkering down. >> where you are and i can see behind you, on 6th avenue, which would normally be bustling, new york city, why are the subways being closed in manhattan where most of them are underground? >> reporter: you are right about it being ghost town. a mcdonalds that never closes and it just closes. the simple answer, why do the subways shut down? the potential for flooding. last time i could remember the

busters warning people to watch for symptoms. >> i knew it would go around. >> the news caught this mom by surprise. >> one thing if it is your kids. if it is other people's kids you worry. >> he didn't seek care till later. that means he was out in the community. >> reporter: officials say last monday a man infected with the measles dined at the dave and busters from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the evening. the day before on sunday he went to costo and walmart. officials are cautioning those who were at the stores from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. >> be cautious. freaking out. >> reporter: this mother whose daughter works that walmart told us -- at the walmart told us she was sent home.

car crash ignited fire at pizzeria today destroying the business. it happened before noon today in san bruno. a 16-year-old driver slammed into gas main. police say it started when they tried to pull the teen over for driving erratically. the teen took off and slammed into the building. no one was hurt. popular traffic app is getting attention from law enforcement and it triggered a debate on social media. it is called waze. users show where traffic or road dangers might be and it also share wheres police

up, whatever. >> reporter: and they don't want anyone to use it till a feature that allows drivers to mark the location of police officers is turned off. why? it is dangerous and could help police killers find their targets. a sheriff in virginia called it a police stalker app. during a meeting critics referenced the shootings of two norge officers. -- new york officers. the shooter posted a waze screenshot with a message threatening police. investigators do not believe it used it to find the officer whose were killed. in response to the controversy waze said we think very deeply about safety and security and work in partnership with the nypd and other departments all over the world. and most users drive more carefully when they believe law enforcement is nearby.

ship. he deployed the shoot and it hit the water. he got out of the plane and into a life raft and picked up by the ship. this is video from the pilot from the cruise ship. they said he is expecting to be interviewed by the faa. amazing video there. the maker of the plane said he was delivering the plane to the owner in australia. the price of the plane is a half million dollars. new details about the puppies ruskued after they -- rescued after they were abandon. they are offering $5,000 for information about the case. a man and a woman found the pups last week in pleasant hill when their dog started focusing its attention on the bag. if you have information on the
