traffic. westbound 580 at keller we've had a crash. it turned out to be no yours. traffic is a little slow. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. back to our developing news in san francisco. it looks like thieves knew exactly what they wanted when they smashed through the window. alex savidge is live in the financial district with what was taken. but i also want to ask you about traffic in the area as the financial district gets into full swing right now. >> reporter: lots of people stopping and taking pictures. a dramatic scene. it's still an active crime scene. and also an active scene for the tow truck driver. this gentleman is busy trying to remove the gmc suburban from inside the wells fargo museum. between sacramento and

california. bare in mind, this is not a bank, this is a museum. and it also houses some gold nuggets. historic artifacts. that is what was taken this morning according to san francisco police when the folks in this suv drove it through the front window of the place and robbed the place and stole the gold nuggets. this all happen the before 4:00 this morning. investigators say the nuggets were taken from a display case here inside the museum. there were security guards on hand at the time here at the museum. what is unclear as we talked with san francisco police is whether the thieves were armed or unarmed at the time. again bare in mind this is not a bank. they came here looking for some of the valuable artifacts and apparently got away with some gold nuggets this morning. according to investigators, those suspected robbers got away in another car. they ditched this suv inside

the movie yes, ma'am and got away in another car. what we don't know is what it looks like. we're waiting to get more information from san francisco police about that getaway car. and also possibly a description of at least three robbers opinion that is who san francisco police are look for. the three robbers that got away with gold nuggets from this museum. no reports of anyone being hurt. >> so amazing they were able to bust through there and get awhat with that. thank you. 6:05 is the time. happening now snow continues to fall along the northeast. this morning snowplows out all night after a temporary travel ban. drivers are allowed back on the roads in new york city and new jersey this morning. buses and subways are slowly beginning to go back into service. canceled for the first time because of weather will. thousands of flights have been canceled with boston, new york, and new jersey feeling an impact. i believe boston is completely closed.

it could be before the end of the week before flights are fully back to normal. when millions of people were told to stay in their homes, many rushed to the stores to stock up unstoplies. these are some of the shelves in boston along with groceries people were advised to stock up on batteries. we'll have the latest on the storm coming up in a live report at 6:30. people in one san jose neighborhood they have safety concerns about their street this morning after a jogger was hit and killed. ktvu tara moriarty is joining us live now to tell us why police think the fatal crash may be connected to street racing. tara. >> reporter: good morning. the guardrail was completely ripped out of the sidewalk and now the metal is twisted and lies on a heap on the side of the road. the guardrail doesn't do enough to protect people walking by. the latest accident is highlighting the need for change. sadly a young woman lost her life while jogging along the stretch yesterday around noontime. relatives of 23-year-old pablo

say they received a phone call from the coroner informing them that pablo was killed when she was pinned between the car on the left and the tree. two men appeared to be racing each other. speeding west. when they lost control of their cars and veered to the right. neighbors say speeding cars are really nothing new to them. >> they will set up speed traps. officers are pulling people over. it works for two weeks and then everyone goes right back to it. >> reporter: the two drivers 19- year-old gabrielle and 24-year- old manuel have been booked into the santa clara county jail on vehicular manslaughter charges. the d.o.t. and the city are supposed to be out here to fix the guardrail but neighbors say it's simply a band aid solution. tara moriarty back to you. a chp officer was hurt when something in the trunk of a

patrol car exploded and burst into flames. an officer was driving east on the bay bridge out of san francisco. this was about 7:30 last night when he saw smoke. he pulled off the bridge at the treasure island exit and his patrol car burst into flames. when a second chp officer rushed over to help debris from the explosion hit him. >> normally have flairs, electronic equipment, radios. but as far as ammunition is concerned, i don't think there was any in the trunk. >> the car will be carefully examed to see if other patrol vehicles might also pose a disabling. it was worth $2.5 million. solano county sheriffs detectives are trying to figure out who is behind a major pot

grow in benicia. the grow was discovered around 7:00 last night. detectives found 30 pounds of processed marijuana. 825 plants. there were three rooms in the building designed for growing and another room for drying. no one was in the building when detectives arrived. anyone with information is asked to call police. time is 6:09. it's happening now. the rally required home lessen sus it's getting under way in santa clara county right now. hundreds of volunteers and several homeless guides they will spend the next two days counting the number of people living on the streets in the county. the guides get a small payment for helping out with this census. the federal government requires this homeless count every two years and they use that nfl to decide just how much money each county will get for homeless programs. ktvu janine de la vega is out there as well. she will bring us a live report on this home lessen sus that is coming up in our next half hour. right now it's 6:09.

welcome back. time is 6:13. now developing news coming in from libya. a terror group with ties to isis claiming responsibility for a deadly attack at a luxury hotel today. smoke is rising. that is the corinthia hotel. libyan security officials say as many as five people were killed by masked gunmen who stormed that hotel. a car bomb also exploded there. at least two of the attackers believed to have been killed in a gun battle with security guard and police. a 16-year-old girl is in

custody after leading officers on a chase that ended in a firey crash that ended in san bruno. witnesses captured the chase on video. police say it started when they tried to pull the teenager for erratic driving. it ended when she crashed into a pizza restaurant. the impact suffered a gas line which sparked a huge fire. the restaurant was not open yet so no one was inside. teen driver walked away from the crash unharmed but witnesses tell us here that her demeanor seemed unusual. >> you could tell in her face she was driving down. she was excited driving down this was something so excited to be doing. >> at least no one got hurt. >> the fire burned more more than an hour before pg&e crews could dig up the street to shut the gas line off. the teen driver was taken into custody. today san francisco supervisors are expected to

approve a $3 million settlement for the family of a woman who disappeared from her room at san francisco general on the last year. lynn spalding's body was found in a stairwell 17 days after she was reported missing. the 57-year-old woman had been admitted to the hospital for a bladder infection. doctors ordered she be monitored around the clock because she was disoriented. the settlement will go to spaldings adult children. happening today doctors at two bay area hospitals are taking an unusual action to protest what they call unfair labor practices. 150 doctors at ten university health centers including ucsf are staging a one-day strike. they are expected to walk off the job in just about an hour from now and join picket lines and rallies. the doctors union accuses uc of negotiating in bad faith over a contract that has been in the works for more than a year.

according to the union, this will be the first doctor strike in the u.s. in 25 years. a san francisco pastor is stirring up a big controversy this morning. the star of the catholic church in the richmond district will no longer allow girls to be alter servers at mass. according to the san francisco chronicle ref rend joseph says it's a preparation to become a priest. and in the catholic church women are not allowed to become priests. some parents are very upset about this but the arch diocese says it's up to the individual church whether or not to allow alter girls. this was one of the first pictures asaw when i got to work. it's not appetizing to me but kids fried -- but kentucky fried chicken has come up with the double dog sandwich. it's a hot dog covered with cheese and fitted into a bun

line. blue for some it's no doubt about it blizzard for others. things are calming dune little bit. it will go most of the day and finally slowly lift out of here. let's head back home. it looks like san francisco will go down as the only january in 166 years of recordkeeping without any rainfall. this will billion it today. after today the rest of the month not much left. shows no rain. normal is 4.5 inches of rain. so far not a drop. there has been drizzle. so a trace amount. but nothing at a .01 or greater. 2013 wasn't much better .49. that is three declining januaries on rainfall. let's hope things improve. cloudy skies, breezy light rain. mostly cloudy. some sun may be breaking through a little later today. but there is light rain embedded with this. it looks more ominous. i doubt much falls. santa cruz mountains getting a little bit. maybe santa claire rap valley.

fresno had .09. that is the most rain they've had since december 17th. so there will be some rain out to the valley. sacramento, valley. 40s, 50s, and 60s. 64 sfo. 63 redwood city. 60 hayward. san jose low 60s. and even half-moon bay because of that south wind. system is bringing in drier air from the south. it will be sunny in l.a.. that will make it for us by tomorrow. but for today cloudy with very light rain. i doubt very much accumulates. but farther south better opportunity. 60s on the temps. rather mild here. some of the lows sitting at about 63 or 64. even with the cloud cover they are not going to change much. we have a very small spread between the low and the high. it looks dry as we head into the weekend. in fact, i think we are going down as the driest rain.

next year will be bitter. >> it has to be. time is 6:20. the nfl may be closing in on who deflated those game balls used in the afc championship game. according to fox sports, the nfl has video now of a locker room attendant taking the patriots game balls out of the referees locker room before that title game. the video shows him taking the balls into another room where they may have been deflated before they were taken out on to the field. the attendant has been questioned and interviewed by the nfl. part of construction project came crashing down. the cleanup under way now after a highway 101 bypass collapsed in mendocino county and the renewed criticism over the prospect. >> violent armed robbery. this caught on tape. what happened after the police showed up and why the store owner is so angry.

the police department bomb squad detonated a pipe bomb inside an suv parked at a shopping center. it started when police

responded to a shoplifting call at a walmart. the suspect was detained. police searched her car and that is when they found the device in the passenger seat. both were carefully made and ready to be detonated. this morning police in san pablo they are investigating two faucets of a violent armed robbery last week. take a look. police are searching for two robbers. they hit the bonn fair market last wednesday. on their way out, one of the robbers shot and critically injured the clerk. the nephew of the owner. the owner says what really bothers him about the whole incident is that the responding police officers didn't offer first aid but instead took pictures of his bleeding nephew. the police department says it's looking into this. >> a nephew was laying on the ground asking for help and they did not help him. and they were just standing and taking pictures of him.

>> i will definitely look into it. we will reach out to the family and insure whatever we can do to make our response better, we will do. >> the store owner is offering a $10,000 reward out of his own pocket to help catch those robbers. more warnings surrounding the measles are popping up in the south bay. officials say a man infected with the illness went to the dave and busters restaurant inside the great mall in milpitas. county health officials says the man visited the restaurant between 6:00 and 9:00 last monday night. signs greeted customers letting them know he did not go inside the rest of the mall but he did shop at the costco and walmart in gilroy. people are being told to watch out for symptoms in the next couple of weeks. >> measles is circulating at some level. we don't know what level in the community because these two cases we had we couldn't figure out where they got exposed. >> dave and busters issued a

statement. it says quote there has been no cases of symptoms reported like several other businesses. we are working with county health officials and will continue to monitor for any indications of exposure out of an abundance of caution. it is now 6:26. there is a plan to make a dangerous street in san francisco safer for bikers and pedestrians. but coming up in 15 minutes, what neighbors would have to give up in return that has them upset. >> we're live in san jose where hundreds of volunteers are going into the community and counting the homeless population. we'll tell you why it's being done.

the blizzard northeast for most not all. we had 80s on the coast. on the weekend. oklahoma city was 77 degrees. 77 degrees for record high. >> so we're not the only ones. >> there is extremes. in january. which leads me to believe that something has to change here. and we'll see what happens as we get to early february. it's just one way or another there are too many extremes here. things have to level off here. all the energy, the strongest energy is in the northeast. no doubt about it. we do have very, very light rain. santa cruz mountains. there is a lot of cloud cover and some rain. 50s and 60s. 64 at sfo. temperatures are really mild. there is a strong southeast breeze. cloudy to mostly cloudy today. look for a little light rain. i would say south and east not

city. let's go back to the desk. a brazen smash and grab robbery it happened this morning in san francisco's financial district. the home of the famous wells fargo stagecoach. it happened early this morning. the target gold nuggets. san francisco police on the hunt for gold thieves after a traumatic break in here at the wells fargo museum in the financial district. here's the scene behind

according to san francisco police there were security guards on hand at the time. it's unclear if the robbers were using weapons. if they were armed at the time. now bare in mind this is not a bank they broke into. this is simply the wells fargo museum which houses a number of artifacts. that includes the wells fargo stagecoach and the gold nuggets which appear to have been the target for the thieves this morning. the robbers they all got away in another car. they ditched this suv inside the bank this morning. they got into another car. we don't have a description on

that car. it does not appear anybody was hurt. san francisco police are searching for the robbers that got away with gold nuggets. new this morning in san jose. residents of a duplex escaped safely after an early morning carport fire. it started at 2:30. not far from the boulevard. three cars were badly burned. fortunately the flames didn't spread to the dew plex itself and no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. happening now hundreds of volunteers preparing to count and interview homeless people in santa clara county. janine de la vega is joining us from san jose. the information they are gathering could help get the homeless off the streets.

janine. >> reporter: yes. volunteers just started leaving here on oakland road. the way it works a volunteer and a homeless person jump into a car together and then the homeless person acts as a guide to help track down others that sleep on the street. they will also be interviewing them.

more people sleeping in encampments. under passes or streets. gives us a sense of what kind of services we need. more than 300 volunteers will be spread out doing the count all day today and tomorrow. results will be ready in early summer. >> thank you. it will billion very interesting. pars of the northeast still getting hit by a major winter storm this morning. maine, massachusetts, they are expected to get the worse of it. we're looking at video here. this is boston this morning. snow still flying around. and still on the roads. the storm also has hurricane forced winds and white out conditions throughout most of the northeast. our reporter brian is live in new york city now.

right in time square area. a travel ban was lifted just hours ago so what can you tell us about it? >> reporter: good morning, dave. as many people know no, city instituted their travel bans at 11:00 last night. they literally shut down the subway system in new york city. the first time that has ever been done ahead of a blizzard and really they lifted the bans at 8:00 a.m. and people are now allowed to come out using public transportation and their cars. and look, if you look behind me, this is midtown manhattan on a typical tuesday this would be packed with coarse and business. people are heeding the warnings and deciding to stay home. you can see the cabs coming back out again. we are a block from time square. it is a little eerie how quiet it is. long island new york which is two to three hours away from here, 20 inches of snow and they are still going in that blizzard warning. of course like you had mentioned places in

massachusetts, boston, and providence, rhode island, and portland, maine they are getting pummeled with more than two feet of snow. two feet of snow the canned in some places there. again it's a storm of sort of two faces. but here in new york and new jersey we were spared. just seven inches of snow here. >> i'm looking behind you. just a quick ten second question. are there people back there saying this was just a bunch of hype? we didn't get what they said we were going to get? >> reporter: yeah people are upset on twitter an facebook saying this is just a bunch of hype. the governor made a point by saying we have put in the travel ban and because we have put in the travel ban, plows were able to do their jobs and not hit cars. that is why we were able to bounce back as quickly as we are. putting a positive spin perhaps on putting that ban out and over reacting a bit in the eyes of some new yorkers. >> thank you for the update. brian in new york city, thank you very much.

time is 6:39. meantime here in the bay area, hundreds of flights expected to billion effected today -- to be effected today and probably for the rest of the week as well because of the that big storm. we checked in with the local airports. sfo had 85 flights canceled so far today. airlines of both san jose and oakland they canceled almost all flights into boston and new york and new jersey. airlines have been busy rescheduling passengers on flights later in the week without charging any extra fees. some passengers on a virgin atlantic flight they were stuck on a tarmac for six hours because of that winter storm. the flight was supposed to go from jfk in new york to london. passengers waited on that plane until about midnight. many of them were on twitter talking about what they were going through saying they didn't get anything to eat or drink. the passengers say they tried to get a hotel or stay with some friends but the roads were

all closed because of the winter storm. they were doing everything they could to keep their passengers comfortable. millions of people are happy to have access to their facebook and instagram accounts. the outage effected a lodge passion of the united states for about 40 minutes. users in australia, asia and the united kingdom report having trouble logging on. facebook released a statement saying it was an internal technical issue that caused the problem. not an attack from anyone outside the company. however, lizard squad a group attention for attention seeking antics online claimed responsibility for the outages but they can be just saying that. >> it's back. a feel good story. a man who grew up homeless on the streets of san jose. >> there were times when me and my mom slept on the park bench. >> today though he is playing

at the stores here in berkeley. and many proponents are taking notice. this was a picture taken earlier this month by laurie cavatelli. it says omg, berkeley soda tax makes a difference. dollar tree stopped selling soda. now selling water. go #berkeleyversessoda. they were no longer able able to carry sugary drinks and soda at the $1 price tag. it will add $0.68 to the cost of a two litter bottle of soda. there is plenty of people that feel quite differently. some say doing business in berkeley is too much and this tax makes it harder. others say government should any further have a say on people's right to choose. as we take you back out here

san francisco to much of the peninsula in the low 60s to mid 60s. but i will tell you today is the only day where the possibility of any rain. i doubt any of it makes it to san francisco. starting tomorrow and the next three or four days there is no sign of any rain. this looks like the first january ever in 166 years of record keeping in san francisco that no rain will fall and last year we thought would be the worse when only .06. looks a little more ominous than it is. from monterey to fresno it looks to be beat opportunity for us. we all mention it the next couple of days if anything is focused on california it looks to be toward central or up

toward the mountains. 50s and 60s. 64sfo. 63 redwood city. mountain view at 61. half-moon bay at 59. 62 san jose state. sunnyvale is in there. even 50s for gilroy and morgan hill. that is a very mild warm direction. even into san francisco getting a south, southeast breeze. so that is why they are sitting around 60 degrees. the water temps are around 59. half-moon bay 58. incredibly warm for this time of year. dry air in southern california. they'll have mostly sunny skies. we'll have a cloudy day. very light rain. light rain a little breezy at times for some. peninsula, south bay. but 60s on the temps. if you are sitting at 62, 63 that tells you. not going to be much change in those temps today.

morning. president obama cut his trip to india short to include a sop in saudi arabia after he died on friday. he will meet with the new >> mr. king: abdala's brother. the collapse of a massive bypass project is renewing criticism that the whole project is flawed. a 200-foot section of highway 101 in that bypass crashed through the ground on thursday sending several workers to the hospital. construction work won't continue until the cause of that collapse is determined. now critics of the expansion say this latest set back adds more money, money time to a very expensive project that is already behind schedule. the goal of the six mile bypass according to supporters is to ease congestion and noise on local streets. >> unfortunately i think it will make more of a rift between the two parties. the pro and the con on that. and it's unfortunate. just need to find enter where we can work together. >> transportation planners are

being urged by environmentalists to scale down the bypass from 4-2 lanes because they fear construction in a watershed there are stability and safety problems. the current price tag is more than $200 million. we are now hearing from the pilot of that small plane that made an emergency landing in the pacific ocean. 28-year-old l lou morton took off from tracy and heading for maui. he deployed a special pair shoot he had for the plane and that helped him make a softer landing in the ocean. coast guard directed a nearby cruise ship to pick him up. >> the coordination with coast guard. coordination with all americans. more than impressive.
