>> yeah. >> for some areas, the snow was not that great. 4, 6 in new york. long island, 2 feet. some areas in massachusetts, 2 feet. plymouth, hurricane conditions, 70-mile-an-hour winds. for some, this was a full-blown blizzard. i it see a photo coming out of providence on i-95. nobody was on the freeway. nobody. so other areas escaped it. others are still dealing with it and they will. so the blizzard for some continues to be in full-blown category but for others things are winding down. cloudy skies. breezy, light rain. santa cruz mountains, i think would get the most out of anybody. even that looks light. there is a lot of cloud cover here. not much in the way of rain. anything up there is high- based. san joaquin valley, fresno has had measurable amounts. 50 and 60s. mild due to a southeast breeze for some. 62 woodside is incredible. 60 for san mateo. that's because of that southeast breeze at sfo. mountain view and also san

jose's had an east-southeast so does half moon bay. cloudy today. drier air moves in. today, cloudy, maybe light rain. but it's mainly clouds. a little breezy at times. that's an east-southeast breeze. highs will be in the 60s. here's mr. sal castanedo. i've been listening but i haven't heard anything yet. anything change? >> we've had crashes but they haven't been super serious. we'll start off with the bay bridge toll plaza as we see the traffic is backed up for a 20 minute, 25-minute drive as you are sitting there in traffic. once you get on the bridge, it looks okay. no major problems. if you are driving onto other bridges around the bay, it looks okay. this is 8880 in oakland. you can see -- this is 880 in oakland. it's busy but not stop and go. northbound 280 a little bit slow. daly city as you drive up to 19th avenue. had a couple of earlier accidents there. a new crash on the peninsula southbound 101 at hillsdale and traffic is getting slow out of

burlingame heading down south just past highway 92. 7:03 back to the desk. developing news in san francisco's financial district where police are looking for thieves in a daring smash and grab. alex savidge is live at the wells fargo history museum where police say some valuable gold nuggets were stolen early this morning. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. san francisco police wrapping up their investigation out here into this dramatic gold heist, a break-in at the wells fargo history museum which is right here across the street from us. it's on montgomery between sacramento and california if you are familiar with this area in the financial district, you can see people stopping to take pictures this morning. this crime has turned this museum into sort of a spectacle, people stopping to take pictures and check things out. let me show you what it looked like earlier this morning. when we got here, the suv used in the heist was still sitting inside of this museum.

at least three thieves we're tolds, they drove the suv through the front window of the place. >> they got out and that's when they stole gold nuggets historic artifacts on display inside the museum. there were actually security guards on hand at the time aid cording to -- according to san francisco police investigators. what's unclear is whether those, at least three robbers, were armed at the time they carried out the crime this morning. but san francisco police say what took place was the thieves ditched their suv inside of the museum and they got into another car that was waiting for outthem outside. they got away with the gold nuggets and the thieves are still on the run after a planned heist in san francisco. back to you. >> thank you. snow continues to fall along the northeast this

morning after a temporary travel ban. drivers are now allowed back on the roads in new york city and new jersey. buses and subways are also slowly beginning to get back to service. several inches have been falling every hour, especially in boston which has really been the hardest hit city so far. coming up at 7:30, we'll have a live report on how this storm is impacting air travelers nationwide. when millions of people were told to stay in their homes during the storm, many rushed to stock up on supplies at the stores. look at this store in boston. people were advised to stock up and not a lot left on the store shelves. it was a close call for two chp officers when something in the trunk of a patrol car exploded and burst into flames. the chp says one officer was driving east on the bay bridge out of san francisco, about 7:30 last night when he saw smoke. well he, pulled off the bridge

just in time. his patrol car burst into flames on the treasure island exit. a second chp officer rushed over to help out. that's when debris from the explosion hit him. as you can imagine, chp cars are filled with equipment and some of it could be hazardous. >> normally have flares, electronic equipment, modem, radios. as far as ammunition is concerned, i don't believe there was any ammunition in the trunk at the time. >> the chp says fortunately the officer only had minor injuries. that patrol car will be carefully checked out and examined to see if other patrol vehicles might other pose a danger. a marijuana grow operation worth $2.5 million found in benicia by solano county sheriff's detectives want to know who was behind it. was discovered last night

around 7:00 during the search of a building on east 2nd street. detectives found 30 mounds of processed of marijuana and plants. there were three rooms designed for growing. another room for drying. no one was in the building at the time when detectives got there but if you have any information, call police. happening now, hundreds of volunteers are starting a two- day search for homeless people in santa clara county. it's the homeless census, the federal government requires every two years. janine de la vega is live in san jose where she just talked to san jose's new mayor about the importance of the homeless count. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tori. in the last 20 minutes, volunteers left city teen ministries on oakland road and they are now out counting. the last time a count was done in santa clara county, they found out that the county has the largest chronic homeless population per capita in the

u.s. so is that changed? we'll find out. the u.s. department of housing and urban development requires that counties provide counts of the home also population every two years. in 2013, the report found there were approximately 7600 homeless people living in santa clara county. volunteers will collect such as age, gender, sexual orientation and race. they will be interviewing that, asking about barriers and finding employment, domestic violence, healthcare access and how many use government assistance. >> we know that the problem is bad. we know in many ways it's getting worse. we also know with the help of destination home, we have been able to house over 800 individuals who were the most chronically homeless in the last two years. there's certainly some good news but we know there's plenty more work done on. >> reporter: more than 300 volunteers have spread out doing the count all day today and tomorrow. results from the data will be

ready in early summer. there will be interesting findings. we'll let county leaders know where resources are needed the most. we'll catch up with one of the teams in the next hour that's counting and we'll bring that to you coming up at 8:00. back to you. 7:09. james jones knows what it is like to be homeless and says that's why he spends time with people in shelters. >> i'm grateful for everything i have been through. it made me into the man i am today. >> jones and his mother were in and out of homeless shelters, including this one, for the first 15 years of his life. he says that taught him to set goals and work hard to achieve them. >> you know, there were days where my friends would be like man, let's go here. let's party. let's drink this and smoke this. i'm like, no. i can't do that. i'm gonna go to the gym.

i've never seen somebody work very hard and not something good happen. >> he was not expected to play in the nfl. but look at that. in 2011 he earned a super bowl championship ring playing for the green bay packers. he says signing with oakland last march is a dream come true. shelter workers say jones visits off -- often and inspires adults and children to create their own dreams and then to work hard to make those dreams come true. well, stocks opened with big losses after a weaker-than- expected report on durable goods. computers, and appliance orders fell 3.5% in december. economists say that could be a sign the u.s. economic growth is slowing. companies including microsoft and caterpillar and dupont had disappointing earnings reports this morning. apple reports after the closing bell today. the dow down 273 right now. and the nasdaq getting the

biggest hit down 74 and that's 1.6% drop and the s&p is down 24. so it's been a little bit of a roller coaster but the markets were pretty inflated in the first place. >> yeah. what goes up, needs to come down. >> a buying opportunity. >> yeah, right. still ahead, it was a scary wakeup call this morning for people in one san jose duplex. look at this. in 20 minutes, why firefighters say those people should be lucky even though three cars were lost. he's now being called a person of interest in the so- called deflategate. up next, the person caught on surveillance video and what he did with the footballs that's raising suspicion. >> we still have a lot of slow traffic out there and the peak of the morning commute, you can see this is the guadalupe parkway, northbound, a lot of slowing getting into downtown san jose. we have very, very light rain out to the valley. we'll see if any of it makes it

7:14. we're continuing to developing news from libya. that's where a terror group with ties to isis claims responsibility for a deadly attack at a luxury hotel. you can see smoke rising from the hotel in tripoli. it's popular with foreign tourists. a libyan security official says masked gunmen in bulletproof vests stormed the hotel killing five foreigners and three security guards. there are reports that two of the attackers were killed. authorities say the scene is now under control. we're getting word of a new online message reportedly from isis militants. in it, the group says that the japanese hostage and a jordanian pilot it holds have less than 24 hours to live.

the message demands the release of an iraqi woman sentenced to death in jordan for involvement in a 2005 terror attack that killed 60 people. in video released saturday, isis claimed it had executed another japanese journalist held captive by the group. a soldier held captive and released by the taliban will be charged with desertion from the u.s. army. according to fox news, two military sources have confirmed that sergeant bowe bergdahl's attorney has been given a charge sheet. it accuses him of desertion for leaving his post. bergdahl was captured by the taliban in 2009 after leaving his unit in afghanistan without permission. he was released last year as part of a prisoner exchange for five taliban members being held at guantanamo bay. if the charges stand, the case will proceed to a court marshal. 7:16. a 16-year-old girl is in police custody this morning after leading police on a wild chase

that ended in a fiery crash in san bruno. [ sirens ] >> now, witnesses took this video of the chase. police say it started when they tried to pull over the teenager for driving erratically. but it ended when she crashed into a popular pizza restaurant severing a gas line and that sparked a huge fire. the restaurant was not open at the time. there was no one inside. the teenaged driver walked away from the crash unharmed. witnesses say her demeanor seemed unusual. >> you can tell in her face when she was driving down. she was excited driving down, like this was something so exsided to be doing. >> we're so blessed no one was here. no one got hurt. >> the fire burned for more than an hour until pg&e crews could dig up the street and turn off the gas. the teenage teen driver was taken into custody and some say she gave two thumbs up from the back of the police car.

a san francisco pastor is stirring up controversy. the star of the catholic church in the richmond district will no longer allow girls to be altar servers at mess. according to the chronicle, the reverend says the honor is meant as a preparation to become a priest. and in the cluth church women are not ayou willed to be priests. some parents are upset by the decision but the archdiocese says it's up to the individual church to decide whether to allow altar girls. let's check in with sal. you are watching highway 4 and everything else. >> it's a little busy there as you drive from la fayette to oakland. if you want to see slow traffic, you've come to the right place. slowing again as you drive up to the tunnel. nothing unusual. it's not because of a crash. as i said that, i want to double check nothing has popped

up. it's slow. let's take a look at the commute on 80 westbound at the macarthur maze. slow traffic around the maze. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see the backup pretty steady. it's a 25, 30-minute delay. i want to mention that a crash in smast has traffic slow on the bay. if you are heading down the silicon valley out of san francisco, daly city, south city, use 280 instead of 101. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. >> you are welcome. >> good morning. we have cloudy skies. not much else. very mild on the lows for some. peninsula, south bay, fog at least for the most part has lifted. that's been with us for the longest, longest time. light rain was reported in the santa cruz mountains but not much. it looks like the system has stalled out or grown up, if you will. the low, 975 millibars. i think -- that's a whopper. that will cause all kinds of problems. blizzard conditions continue.

rhode island, new hampshire, massachusetts, i've seen two feet of snow not far from boston. i-25 is a ghost town coming out of providence. new york city was on the western edge, they did not get as much. la guardia almost had a foot. so i mean the warnings were justified. back home, we do have a dry start and it looks like a try ending to 2015 january. the only opportunity for rain would be today and it looks very weak. i don't think we'll get any rain in san francisco. if we do, i doubt it gets more than .01. that would probably be the extreme. so far zero, we've never had in san francisco a dry january in 166 years of recordkeeping. last year was the driest at .06 in 2013, .49. january has not been kind the last three years for us for rain. some of the rainfall returns. it's high-based of it's not reaching the ground. cloudy, mild for some. you can see there's some rain. you get the darker green out to

fresno, accumulated to .10. 63 sfo, redwood city, mountain view, hayward, 63. it's just really warm for some. not too bad for others. upper 40s from alamo out to antioch and brentwood. 55 san ramon. that's because they are getting a southeast breeze. half moon bay south wind. even makes it into san francisco. it's not that strong but that's why many of the lows are in the 60s. the water temps are 58. try air moving into las vegas. southern california, we'll have a cloudy day. this system is weakening. it might give us something. the higher elevations, highs today, 60s for everybody all the way up to lake county. some of that fog burned off sooner and lifted. 60s, upper 60s to near 70. starting off at 63. wouldn't take much to get to 67, 689. after tomorrow, it looks like back to mostly sunny and warmer as we go into your weekend.

the lodi police department detonated a pipe bomb and another device in an suv parked at a shopping center. it started yesterday when police responded to a shoplifting call at a walmart. the suspect was detained and police searched her car. that's when they found the devices in the passenger seat. police say both were carefully made and ready to be detonated. police in san pablo are investigating two facets of a violent armed rob roy caught on store surveillance cameras.

police are look searching for these two robbers. they hit the bonfair market last wednesday. on their way out, one of the robbers shot and critically injured the clerk, who is the owner's nephew. the owner says what really bothers him is the responding police officers didn't bother to offer first aid to the wounded clerk but instead took photos of him. the san pablo police department says it's looking into the incident. >> he was laying on the ground asking for help. they did not help him. they were standing there and taking piths. >> we will look into it and reach out to the family and whatever we can do, we will do. >> the police says this case is their primary focus. they are doing everything they can to get the gunmen off the streets. the owner of the store is offering a $10,000 reyard from his own pocket to help catch

it's cloudy out there. sharon in mountain view said it's balmy out there. it is. now, it looks like some radar returns are trying to pop up here around santa cruz mountains. had a couple of reports. it looks like portolo valley and mountain view is one city. if there's any rain, it will be light. this is our only bet for month for many. santa rosa had light rain parts of lake county earlier this month. this will be it for many other locations. there is not a lot but there is a little bit here. i think it would favor areas to the peninsula, san jose. 50s and 60s. 63 sfo. redwood city, 63. mountain view, 62. hayward, 63. it's a really warm pattern because of an east-southeast breeze coming up there. there's not a lot here but this is our only opportunity for any rain. cloudy, mild, light rain, mainly, the peninsula, south bay, breezy at times. that's out of the east- southeast.

dead. investigators believe the drivers were street racing when the jogger was hit and killed. tara moriarty joining us live now. you are at the scene and you have more on the safety concerns out there being raised. >> reporter: that's light. the speed limit -- that's right. the speed limit is 30 miles an hour. but neighbors say typically people go between 50 and 90 miles an hour. if we pan over here, you can see how fast people are going. the neighbors have complained. so police set up speed traps for a week or two but everybody slows down and everything goes back to normal. so the department of transportation and the city are supposed to be out here sometime this morning. they are gonna be replacing this guardrail that had initially been put up as a safety sort of barrier. you can see it's been ripped up out of the sidewalk during the crash. neighbors say that replacing this really isn't gonna do much good. relatives of 23-year-old karen say they received a phone call

from the coroner informing them that she was killed yesterday around noontime when she was pinned between the car on the left and the tree. witnesses say two men appeared to be racing each other, speeding west on yerba buena drive east of edenwood road when they lost control of their cars and veered to the right. >> this is our home. this is where we live. it's like a little piece of heaven. it's beautiful but the cars just, fast, back and forth, fast. they don't care. >> reporter: police say the two drivers 19-year-old gabriel basera and 24-year-old manuel have been looked on vehicular manslaughter charges. live from san jose, i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> all right. thank you. 7:34. also new this morning in san jose, a scary wakeup call for people in one duplex.

a two-alarm fire started in a carport about 3:30 this morning. look at the three cars that were burned. this all happened on wayburn line. fire crews say fortunately the flames didn't spread to the duplex itself and no one was hurt. arson investigators are still looking for the cause. well, the northeast continues to get hit by a major storm this morning. boston has been the hardest hit area so far. but in areas like new york and new jersey, the storm was not as bad as expected. our reporter is live with more. is the city starting to get back to usual? >> reporter: i guess we can say that. this was the blizzard that was never. there was a travel ban put in place last night at 11:00, effectively shutting things

down. bottom line is, those historic snowfalls expected did not happen. around 7 inches in some places in manhattan. 10 inches in some others. that's about it. if you look behind me, this is midtown manhattan, this is usually bustling with business and it's really not. that's radio city music hall in the background. the plows were able to do their job all morning because they weren't the blizzard conditions they were expecting. the dashes are starting to come back out again. the travel ban lifted and people are about to take public transportation. a lot of people here i think will stay hunkered down. the worst of it, though, i gotta tell you is in long island, new york, the suv suburb the new york city. they are seeing 20 inches of snow and are seeing the blizzard conditions that you talked about in boston and in maine and in connecticut where they are seeing 2 feet of snow in some places and really experiencing the punch of this storm. here in new york and new jersey, just a few inches of snow and it looks like we got

spared. >> i have to tell you, i have a son who is a student at nyu. i know their classes were canceled. a lot of people feel maybe it a little bit of overkill for the mayor to do so much. if you think if you hadn't canceled off closed the city down, it probably would have been worse for the may ear. >> reporter: that's a good point. that's what a lot of reporters had to say to governor cuomo this morning. hey, you overreacted. to the mayor as well. the governor came out and said, listen, guys. better to be safe than sorry. he said, interesting point, because of the travel ban, they were able to bring in the plows and get the job done quicker and more efficiently and he says thats that helped the city bounce back. he says the travel ban was actually a benefit to helping the city bring everything back to normal quicker than what could have done. that's a more positive spin. if you look on twitter and

facebook, new york are taking out their steam the fact there was a travel ban for an historic blizzard that never really was. >> bryan, thank you. here in the bay area, hundreds of flights are expected to be impacted today. and most likely the rest of the week as well. we spoke to local airports. sfo has 85 cancellations so far today. airlines of both san jose and oakland have canceled all flights into boston, new york and new jersey. airlines have been rescheduling passengers on flights later in the week and without the dreaded additional fees. now, some passengers on a virgin atlantic flight in new york were stuck on the tarmac for six hours. this is an example why so many airlines were canceling flights. it was supposed to travel from j.f.k. to london. passengers waited on the plane until about midnight. many took to twitter saying they were not given anything to

eat or drink. passengers say they tried to get a hotel or stay with friends once they got off the plane but the road were closed. they were strand at the airport. virgin atlantic said the staff was doing everything they could to ensure the comfort of their passengers. a couple of stores in berkeley say a city tax on sugary drinks is making sodas too expensive to sell. so they pulled them off the shelves. one city councilmember says that could be a sign the tax is working. brian flores, you were in berkeley. what's the reaction to all of this? >> reporter: hi, dave. good morning to you. we're in front of the dollar tree store one of two locations in berkeley. you are right. according to store expect, the berkeley soda takes would make it too expensive to sell at the stores in berkeley. so instead of selling it, they decided to pull it from the shelfs. many proponents of the soda tax or measure d as it was known

many people are not happy about safety improvements because they come at a cost. the plan is to make changes to poling street in san francisco -- polk street in san francisco. the city's transportation agency wants to build a razed protected bike lane along polk and another one extending to broadway. the plan would add crosswalks, lights and other safety measures for pedestrians but the cost, it would eliminate about 170 parking spaces and reaction to that is mixed. >> businesses like mine that sells paint, sells lumber, you

still backed up to the maze. about a 20, 25-minute delay. also looking at 92 westbound highway 92 it's moderate. you will get to some slow traffic on the bayshore freeway. i do want to show you the south bay and san jose. we showed you 87 is very slow into downtown san jose. 280. >> 85 and 101 are 101 are slow. we don't have many reasons in the way of step -- in the way of accidents. but it's slow getting in that valley. now the developing news we've been following for you all morning. daring smash-and-grab theft of historic gold nuggets from the wells fargo museum in san francisco's financial district. alex savidge is live with the search for the thieves. this is a well-known area. it's kind of hard to imagine this happened. >> reporter: it happened in the early-morning hours. not a lot of people around, probably in this area. obviously a lot of people around now. everybody stopping to take a look here at the scene behind

us. you can see the front of the place here, the front entrance, the window smashed out here in this dramatic heist that was carried out. very early this morning. sometime after about 3:00 this morning is when it all happened. you can see crews doing the repair work through the wells fargo history museum. that's where this crime took place. at least three robbers according to police, they drove their suv right through the front window of this museum. this is a museum that houses all sorts of artifacts and memberrer billia for -- memorabilia for wells fargo. there was security on duty according to police. what's unclear if the thieves were armed at the time. they made their way inside the building and made their way over to the display cases and were able to steal a number of gold nuggets from those cases. we don't know exactly how much gold was taken. after that, the rockers then hopped -- robbers hopped into another waiting car outside.

they ditched the suv, that gm dr. suburban right there in the middle of the museum and took off. those thieves still on the run this morning. and people who work nearby are stunned by this break-in. >> that's nuts. that's nuts. i wouldn't imagine someone would drive through. i don't even know who would have the mind to do that. >> reporter: this museum houses all sorts of artifacts, items including the old wells fargo stage coach artwork and then all of that real gold from the gold rush air era -- gold rush era. this is the site of the bank that opened back in 1852. it's not a bank branch anymore. it's the wells fargo museum. they offer tours for people to come and look at the tours. a modern day gold heist took place and tori san francisco police still searching for at least three people involved in this crime. >> i would imagine it would not

be easy to sell those gold nuggets. it's a little like the fine wine, easy to identify, right? >> reporter: i think once the items pop up it would probably be pretty easy for police to track down the people trying to sec -- trying to sell them. >> you can't just post them on ebay. >> right. this is the third high- profile smash and grab crime submitted in san francisco in the last three months. just over a week ago, someone smashed a rented u-haul van in the front of a clothing store. the thieves made off with jackets and high-end clothing and then thieves drove a vehicle through the chanel store and grabbed purses before jumping back in the car and taking off. we're putting calls into police to see if they are connecting any connection between the

three times. snow continues to fall along the northeast corridor this morning after a temporary travel ban. drivers are now allowed back on the roads in new york city and new jersey. buses and subways are also slowly beginning to go back into service. several inches have been falling especially in boston which has been the heardest city city so far. coming up we'll have more on how the storm is impacting travelers nation wide including right here in the bay area. 8:06. it was a really close call for two chp officers when something in the trunk of a patrol car exploded. and it burst into flames. the chp says one officer was driving east on the bay bridge out of folks. this was about 7:30 last night when he saw smoke. he pulled off the bridge just in time. his patrol car bust into flames on the treasure island exit. a second chp officer ushed to help. and that's when the debris hit

him. some of the equipment could be hazardous. >> normally have flares, electronic equipment, modems, radios. and sometimes the officers will put their duty bags in the trunk well. but as far at ammunition, i don't believe there was any at in the trunk at the time. >> unfortunately, the chp officer only had minor injuries. the patrol car is gonna be checked out to the see if other patrol vehicles might also pose a danger. happening now, santa clara county is sending hund hundred of -- hundred of volunteers out to count the homeless. the volunteers are counting homeless people are in the -- how many homeless people are in the county and to find out why they ended up on the streets. >> reporter: we're here on king and story road. we saw a team of people. you can see them down the

street. this is volunteers. they are teamed up with homeless people and are looking for others live on the -- living on the street. they are counting them and taking down the information they provide. volunteers came to participate in the homeless census. the u.s. department of housing and urban development requires that counties provide counts of the homeless population every two years. in 2013, the report found there are approximately 7600 homeless people living in santa clara county. volunteers will collect information such as age, gender, section aisle orientation and race. they will be interviewing them asking about barriers and finding employment. domestic violence, healthcare access and how many use government assistance. >> i think the most important trend for us to study is the number of chronically homeless people that we have in the community on a per capty da basis. we have more people with severe mental and physical disinters who have been on the streets for a long time than any other community in the united states. we're -- we've been working on

a very concerted effort to get the most vulnerable off the streets for the past two years. >> reporter: san jose mayor sam liccardo was one of 300 volunteers helping in the count today. they are spread out from palo alto to san jose to gilroy doing this today and tomorrow. results from the data will be ready in early summer. it will be interesting findings. we'll let county leaders know where resources are needed the most. back out here live. you see a lot of scattered shopping carts. sometimes an invasion that homeless people have been around collecting their belongings. they are also searching near the creek bed. a lot of different areas throughout the county where they are gonna collect research and hopefully help in trying to get resources for them. back to you. >> all right. thank you, janine. 8:09. another former cheerleader for the raiders has filed a class- action lawsuit over pay. susie sanchez says she and

other raiderettes were denied minimum wage and overtime compensation. the lawsuit says the women were paid $1250 per year, which works out to less than $5 an hour for rehearsals, charity events and an annual photo session. california minimum wage is $9 an hour. sanchez mentions, deplorable working conditions and grueling training sessions and accuses the raiders of forcing cheerleaders to ignore injuries during rehearsals and games. the team is not commenting on the lawsuit. 8:10. a tough story to talk about. an innocent woman hit and killed by drivers who may have been street racing. the safety concerns of this particular stretch of road in san jose. a violent armed robbery caught on camera. after the break, the police action following the crime that has family members really bothered. we're looking at a commute where traffic is pretty slow all ovaller the place.

now. you are still at the scene with more about the safety concerns being raised out there. >> reporter: yeah. there are quite a few safety concerns. neighbors have let us know about it. actually the brother of the victim is here right now. he's very upset. he makes a good point. this guardrail, you can see where these posts are really not that far into the sidewalk and can easily come out which is exactly what happened during this accident. the speed limit is 35 miles an hour. but drivers will go 50, 60, 70, even 9090 miles an hour. we've seen it -- 90 miles an hour. we've seen it all morning long. neighbors have complained. police set up speed traps but then people slow down and go back to normal. relatives of karen pablo say they received a phone call from the coroner last night informing them that she was killed yesterday around noontime. witnesses say two men appeared to be racing each over,

tax was passed successfully in the country. talking with people here in the country, there's still a deep divide on the issue. >> it's convenient to be able to get a soda for a dollar. you go into the store, it's $2. they say there's dollar store in oakland, everything is $2. it's a dollar. it's straight towards poverty. >> i think it's a good idea. it doesn't boent -- bother me that much. i don't drink it anyway. i don't like soda. never have. i think it's a good idea because -- especially young kids because they drink too much. >> while proponents of the tax are approving the move, people who feel differently, some say it's already costing too much. the soda tax makes it harder. some others say government should never have a say on people's right too choose. measure d passed with 76% approval by voters.

more warnings surrounding the measles are popping up in the south bay. officials say a man infected with the illness went to the dave and buster's restaurant inside the great mall in milpitas. county health officials say the man visited the restaurant between 6:00 and 9:00 last monday night. signs greet the customers entering the restaurant yesterday. officials say the man did not go inside the mall but the day before he shopped at the costco and walmart in gill roye. people are being told to watch out for symptoms in the next couple of weeks. >> measles is circulating. we couldn't figure out where the two were exposed. >> dave and busters issued a

statement. they said -- ush ush there is a plan in san francisco now to make polk street safer for people walking and riding bikes, but valuable parking spaces are gonna be lost. the city's transportation agency wants to build a raze protected bike lane from mcalister to pine. this would add crosswalks and lights and other safety measures but get rid of about 170 parking spaces. some cyclists like the idea but others are worried about losing the parking spaces. >> a business like mine that sells paint and lumber, you can't carry it on the bus. you can't walk with it up the hills. you do need to have a car. >> now, the san francisco bicycle coalition are actually

against the idea. they say it doesn't go far enough to protect cyclists. the city's transit agency is expected to vote on the idea next month. >> kind of an interesting, you know, back and forth. let's check in with sal. earlier, you gave the commute about a c plus. >> we've had accidents. but we haven't had major ones. yesterday, for example, we had a couple of major ones. today they've been fender- benders and have slowed traffic down. for the most part we're still seeing slow traffic. let's take a look at the bay bridge. we're seeing a little improvement getting into san francisco right now. yesterday was much worse. but still a 25-minute drive or so getting into the city. also looking at 880 northbound, it slows at 238. it remains slow all the way up into oakland almost downtown. not quite. san jose and the south bay continues to be slow. 85 has improved. it's still backed up from 87.

it's pounding parts of new hampshire. there have been 70-mile-an-hour winds. about two weeks ago, i posted this and i said it sure looks like san francisco is not going to get any rain. people kind of scoffed at it. no sign of any rain. it's been spot on. it looks like after today, there is no chance unless it's drizzle. san francisco, zero so far. normally 4.50. we thought last year would be the driest ever with .06. this year may be drier and the first january in 166 years to never have any rain. 2015 wasn't very kind either. what's the good news? how can it get any worse? it has to get better next year. light rain, not much. light rain, peninsula, south bay, they will take the focus, there's very little here. more sprinkles than anything else. if it does rain, it doesn't last long. it's mild. 60s on the temps.
