now at noon the search is on for three robbers who rammed an suv into the wells fargo history museum in san francisco. held a guard at gunpoint and then ran away with gold nuggets. what they left behind though at the scene. massachusetts still trying to shovel out after getting slammed by more than a foot of snow. but the storm wasn't nearly as strong in areas like new york city and now a meteorologist with the national weather service is issuing an apology. plus a new development in the deadly stabbing of the 14- year-old athlete. why charges are now being dropped against the teen accused in his death.

good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. that breaking news out of martinez where a verdict has just come in in the case against a concord school teachers accused of child molestation. a jury has found 46-year-old joseph martin guilty on 19 of 26 counts of lewd acts on a child. he was being retried on the charges he molested several former male students at concord's woodside elementary school. his first trial ended in a hung jury. he could be sentenced to life in prison prior to the verdict martin was being held on $10 million bail. san francisco police are searching for a group of thieves who carried out a dramatic heist in the middle of the financial district early this morning. making off with gold from a wells fargo museum. we are live now to explain with

alex savidge. good afternoon to you. >> reporter: good afternoon to you, modern day gold heist in the financial district at the wells fargo museum. police believe the bandits made off with $10,000 worth of gold nuggets that had been on display here another the museum. as you can see by damage that was done here to the front san francisco the thieved carries out the -- entrance, the thieves carried out the robbery in dramatic fashion. an suv with its lights still on sat in the middle of the museum early this morning after thieves drove it through the revolving glass doors during a bold break-in. it happened around 2:30 at the wells fargo museum on montgomery. san francisco police say three thieves all wearing masks hopped out of this suburban and held the lone security guard at gunpoint. the robbers then grabbed historic gold nuggets from the display cases and got into a waiting getaway car. no one was hurt during this holdup and people working nearby were certainly stunned

by the scene. >> that's nuts man. that's nuts. i wouldn't imagine that someone would drive through here. i don't know who would have the mind to even do that man. >> reporter: this museum houses all sorts of historic items and original wells fargo stagecoach, western artwork, and real gold rush era gold. police say the thieves stole as much as 10 ounces worth of the precious metal what they plan to do with it is another question. detectives are now trying to figure out how long this crime may have been in the works. >> wireworking closely with -- we are working closely with the bank and museum to see if there's any possible relation to prior history with the suspects, at this point it appears to be an isolated incident. however we will increase our presence by doing more passing calls at the area. >> reporter: police say the suv used in the morning's break-in had been stolen. a couple of days ago from san bruno. and the getaway car investigators are still searching for? only described as a light colored four door sedan.

and again tori, san francisco police still on the hunt this afternoon for this group of outlaws who carried out a gold heist right here in the middle of the city this morning. >> all right, alex live for us in san francisco, thank you. now this smash and grab crime follows two others in high-profile locations in san francisco. in the last three months. just over a week ago, someone smashed a rented u-haul van into the front of a patagonia store and stole jackets and other clothing, about two months before that, thieves drove a car through the window of the chanel boutique near union square. they grabbed purses before jumping back in the same car and taking off. so far in confirmation from police there's now connection between the incidents. shocks still lower this afternoon trading way down by disappointing forecasts from big name companies like microsoft and procter & gamble along with the unexpected drop in durable goods orders. but taking a live look now at

the big board it is currently down 22 #. the nasdaq is down 61 and the s&p is down 19. now to developing news on the blizzard in new england. this is a live look at the snow- covered streets in plum island, massachusetts. the region that's seen the brunt of the storm. but in places like new york city, the storm was not nearly as bad as predicted and today a national weather service meteorologist even issued an apology for the forecast. ryan has the latest on the conditions in new york and massachusetts. >> reporter: things are getting back to normal here in new york after a massive blizzard threatened to drop up to three feet of snow on the city. travel bans in new york city and other surrounding areas no longer in effect. city buses, subways and trains getting up and running. and people are starting to emerge from their homes and hotel rooms. new york governor andrew cuomo still warning people to stay inside if possible. >> there's a level of ice under

the snow in many areas. and if you don't have to travel today, you really don't want to be traveling today. >> reporter: the blizzard less powerful here than originally expected. officials standing by all precautions taken ahead of the storm's arrival. >> we did a good job clearing the roads because they were empty. the system is going to come back online much faster than it would have if the trains were exposed to the conditions. >> reporter: massachusetts seeing some of the worst conditions. some areas hit with more than a foot of snow by this morning. and boston could get as much as two feet. wintry weather expected throughout the day. >> we did see very high winds. we continue to see high wind and we'll see high winds over the course of the day. and in many parts of massachusetts, we're going to continue to see snow falling. >> reporter: long island, new york especially hit hard by the storm. a 17-year-old boy dying there last night after going snow

tubing and hitting a pole. in new york, bryan llenas, fox news. >> if you are planning to try to travel from the bay area to the east coast, airport officials say it is a good idea to check with your airline. more than 100 flights have been canceled to or from san francisco international today. so far, there are no cancellations at mineta san jose or oakland airports. new developments now in the stabbing death of a promising student-athlete in san francisco. today, the city district attorney's office dropped charges against the 14-year-old arrested in the death of rash awn williams. last week the public defender released a tape that he says shows the accused teen is not the person who stabbed williams. the district attorney's office calls the video one part of all the evidence in the case but would not say if another arrest is imminent. >> given the investigation that's continuing, depending on what that reveals, additional steps will be available shortly

for the public. >> 14-year-old rashawn just bought candy when he was stabbed outside a market in the mission district. last september 2nd. he earned a freshman to sacred heart and hoped to attend harvard. there will be no jail time for a former chp officer who admits to stealing news photos from the phones of women he pulled over. this morning sean hairington pleaded no contest to two felony charges in contra costa county. a judge allowed hairington to avoid going to jail as part of the plea deal. instead serve three years probation and attend violence prevention training. harrington was accused of taking pictures from the phones of two women he pulled over for dui last august and sharing them with other chp officers. today, after court, with his wife by his side, harrington spoke publicly for the first time. >> i apologize to my family. my wife and my friends. i apologize to officers

everywhere and especially to the two women involved. i'm trying to put this behind me and move forward from this and i hope now everyone else can too. thank you. >> last week, two investigators broke the story that a third woman says harrington accessed her phone during another dui stop in august. he was not charged in that case by pleading to a felony harrington is barred from possessing any guns or working in law enforcement again. a woman is dead and two drivers are behind bars after a suspected street race got out of control. authorities say 18-year-old gabriel esparza and 23-year-old manuel maldonado are being held on vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving charges. the accident happened on yerba buena wood in san jose yesterday afternoon. family members identified the victim as 23-year-old karen pabla. police say she was out jogging when the two suspected racers lost control pinning her

against a tree. neighbors say the street is known for speeding. >> i won't even let my grandchildren be in the front yard because two knows what can happen -- who knows what can happen? we're working in the yard you know, we're always looking behind our backs. because we don't know what could come our way. the city needs to know how this has affected us. they have to do something. you know. i don't know what more it's going to take. i mean what higher cost can you pay than a life? >> san jose city crews are expected to go back to the intersection today to try and come up with a solution to make the area safer. new developments on the japanese hostage being held by isis militants. today the group released a new audio message. the voice on the tape is believed to be captive journalist kenji goto saying he and a pilot have less than 24 hours to live. isis is demanding the release of an iraqi woman sentenced to get in jordan for -- death in jordan for an involvement in a terror attack that killed 60

people. isis previously claimed to have executed the other man held captive by the group. about 300 holocaust survivors returned to the auschwitz concentration camp in poland today to mark the 70th anniversary of the camp's liberation by soviet army troops. ♪ ♪ ceremonies were held outside the infamous gate of death. several world leaders attended the commemoration including the presidents of germany and austria. the two nations with the strongest nazi history. notably absent was russian president vladimir putin due to current tension over the situation in ukraine. st estimated over a million of the mostly jewish prisoners were killed at auschwitz. for the first time in 25 years, more than 100 doctors at uc health centers are walking off the job. we'll tell you why. >> cloudy skies across the bay area. even drizzle in some parts.

happening today, an unusual action by doctors on uc

campuses. they are not in their patient exam rooms, they're on pix lines. 150 doctors at ten university of california student health centers including uc berkeley and ucsf are saving a one day strike. they walked off the job at 7:30 this morning. the doctors unionized 2013 and now it accuses u can have of negotiating in -- uc of negotiating in bad faith over the first contract which has been in the works for over a year. according to the union of american physicians and dentists, this is the first doctor strike in the u.s. in 25 years. the impact of berkeley's new soda tax is already being felt. now the dollar tree has decided to stop selling soda all together. at its two stores in berkeley. a company spokesperson says because of the city's new soda tax, the company cannot sell soda or other sugary drinks at the $1 price point. >> it's convenient to be able to get a soda for $1. you go in the store and it's

$2. they say there's dollar stores in west oakland. you go in there and everything $2. and this is $1? i mean of course. it's straight towards poverty. >> berkeley's city council member cap tell lee tweeted -- opponents say the tax just makes it harder for many businesses in berkeley to make ends meet. mothers against drunk drivers and uber are partnering up to help reduce drunk driving. they released a report today which shows ride sharing services made it easier the avoid drunk driving. and a survey for over 800 people, 78% said friends are less likely to drive home after drinking since ride sharing services like uber started operating in their city. among other findings, in area here's in california -- areas near california. drunk driving crashes fell 6.5% among drivers under 30 where uber is. that's about 60 fewer crashes

per month. the trademark furry mink mustache is out and this new glow stash is in for lyft drivers. the san francisco based company says its drivers will place them on their dashboards. they'll remove the furry ones on the front grills as part of lyft's rebranding. it's also rolling out a refurbished app to help improve the way that users book and pay for rides. examining a patrol car after something in the trunk exploded yesterday near the bridge. it happened -- bay bridge. it happened last night at 7:30 when the officer saw smoke. he pulled off at the treasure island exit and got out just before the car burst into flames. a second chp officer roushed over to help and was hit by debris from the explosion. >> normally have flares and electronic equipment. our modems, our radios. and sometimes the officers will put their duty bags in the trunk as well. but as far as ammunition is

concerned, i don't believe there was any ammunition in the trunk at the time. >> the officer suffered minor injuries. the car is now being looked over to find out the cause and see if other patrol vehicles might also pose a danger. now to a story we first reported to you yesterday at noon. a 16-year-old girl's in police custody after leading officers on a chase that ended in a fiery crash in san bruno. [ sirens ] witnesses captured the chase on video. police say it started when they tried to pull the teen over for erratic driving. it ended when she crashed into the pizza restaurant. the impact severed a gas line which sparked a huge fire. that burned for more than an hour. no one was injured and the teen driver was taken into custody. it's a cloudy day over the bay area and storm tracker 2 actually picking up on a few sprinkles. take a look at what is happening over the bay. we have the bay bridge there in

view and you can see the overcast skies with all those clouds in place this morning, you may have noticed temperatures were not as chilly as how we started yesterday morning. but let's get back to the radar because again, picking up on some rain right over parts of the north bay. san jose, gilroy, reported a few sprinkles earlier this morning and you may have a little bit of drizzle going on. petaluma stretching over into areas around point ridge. into the afternoon, this possibility is going to be shifting out of the way. and most of it unfortunately has been very goo meaning it's not -- verga meaning it's not even hitting the ground. but take a look at over the sierra above 6,000 feet they're actually picking up a little bit of fresh snow. anywhere from one to three inches reported in and around yosemite and areas right around tahoe picking up a dusting as well. here's a loop of about six hours and you can see how that spin sort of goes in this direction. so this storm is pulling out of here. and by the afternoon, we'll be left with mostly cloudy skies and that possibility of even a few sprinkles over our area will be out of here. take a look as we get into the

afternoon. doesn't really bring us much if any at all. it's going to clear out in the evening hours and unfortunately not going to see any measurable rain out of this. i was checking the data and we haven't seen any yet. just be mostly cloudy mainly dry. and perhaps a spritz. 65 degrees in oakland right now. 65 in walnut creek. low 60s in areas right around napa. santa rosa still school for you 59 -- cool for you at. but upper -- 59. but upper 60s mountain view and 66 for san jose. into the afternoon today, temperatures will remain in the low to mid-60s. doesn't feel so bad out there. it's actually mild. 62 santa rosa and 63 for san francisco with mostly cloudy skies. low 60s expected for the east bay and 63 for you livermore and mid 60s in san jose. and los gatos go to 65 for today. the extended forecast here, showing you once we get past this cloudy not so wet weather we're going to be in dry -- in the dry pattern midweek wednesday. thursday, friday and into your bay area weekend. very quiet with temperatures

ranging in the mid- to upper 60s for the weekend. is that pretty much average? >> or just a little above average? >> it's a little above average. typically in the upper 50s and low 60s this time of year. >> right. all right. thank you rosemary. today volunteers are carrying out a count of the homeless population in the south bay. the u.s. department of housing and urban development requires counties to count homeless population every two years. the last report found approximately 7600 homeless people living in santa clara county. along with questions about age, gender and race, the volunteers will ask about jobs and access to health care. >> on a per capita basis we have more people with severe mental and physical disabilities who've been on the streets for a long time than any other community in the united states. we've been worked on a very concerted effort to get the most vulnerable people off the streets for the past two years. >> the san francisco mayor was one of 300 volunteers helping in the count today and tomorrow. the report should be completely

u.s. stocks tumbled today with microsoft and caterpillar shares down sharply after quarterly results and energy shares though and the s&p 500 were looking to post their

sixth positive day in the last seven. a 2% rise in the price of crude. the dow down 263. the nasdaq down 74 and s&p down 23. you had trouble logging on to it can earlier the social media giant says it was because of an internal software error. facebook and its instagram service both reported temporary outages of about an hour due to the problem. the outage also appeared to temporarily slow or block traffic to other major internet sites according to web and mobile user reports. today is media day at super bowl xlvix for the new england patriots and seattle seahawks, both teams were in phoenix at the u.s. airways center along with journalists and fan. it's often compared to a three ring circus filled with wild antics and obscure questions. despite all the antics, patriots' head coach bill belichick still had to deflect questions about deflate-gate. >> it's all about seattle and

all abilities play sunday and -- about us playing sunday and that's where all of our attention is. i really worried about the rest of that. >> fox sports is reporting that the nfl has video of a locker room attendant removing the game balls from the referee's locker room before the afc title game. he took them to another room where they may have been deflated. the story of a bay area police dog with cancer has set off an outpouring of generosity. so far, more than $14,000 has been raised to help provide chemotherapy for frank. the police k-9 was diagnosed with lymphoma. his handler the police sergeant set up the go fund me account. he says he and the 7-year-old german shepherd have become inseparable. with chemotherapy he says frank is expected to make a full recovery. tonight at 5:00, we are working to learn more about that mysterious goo that was sickening and killing hundreds of birds in the bay area. and we're asking why it's taking so long to understand what that goo could be. as we learn of a big milestone
