investigators here in san francisco working to figure out what caused a deadly fire last night in the mission district. one man was killed. several other people sent to the hospital. but this morning, we're learning about an incredible rescue. we'll tell you about the dog, the pet, that was found this morning inside this building. a gruesome discovery on a busy street in san francisco, police open a suitcase filled with dismembered body parts. what else they found right around the corner that is

fog. not so much inland fog. coast and bay fog. that tells you things are kind of topsy-turvy. sunny, 660s, 70s -- 60s, and 70s. it looks like this will be the driest and the first january ever without any rain. the trend line has been down, 2014, 20130. we're setting a record. i don't think they will get a .01 from drizzle. there's coast and bay fog. but there is still a component of an easterly breeze which should take care of it. 50s for san francisco. sfo. low 40s, mid-40s for some. mountain view says 51. higher elevations in the 50s. santa cruz mountains up to angwin holding at fort. lakeport, sebastopol and petaluma. everyone will rebound from some of the patchy fog. a few high clouds. a lot of fowk. some rain down towards phoenix, las vegas and southern california into saturday, sunday things will get much

better. morning fog, then sunny. coast and bay fog. more so than inland. we'll give way to 60s and also 70s. here'sel is now -- here's sal. i think we have a serious issue. in oakland, eastbound 580 between keller, golf links, eastbound 580, two overturned vehicles there. chp is advising you to stay away from the area. use 880 as an alternate. 580, at least the right two lanes are blocked. 580 westbound is okay. you might see some people slowing down past the scene. quite a bit of emergency personnel are there. one vehicle is overturned on the freeway. one is overturned down an embankment and a lot of activity. westbound, 92, traffic looks okay. there are no problems there as you drive through. also want to mention that the bay bridge toll plaza commute is about normal. which means about 25, 30 minutes. 7:03. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we begin with continuing coverage of a large fire in san

francisco that killed one man and left dozens of people without a home. it's been more than 12 hours since firefighters were first called out to the three-story building in the heart of the city's mission district. ktvu's alex savidge joins us from the scene where firefighters are keeping watch and they've saved another life. alex? >> reporter: yes, tori, good morning. we're learning about an incredible rescue. it sounds as though a small chihuahua managed to survive the fire. early this morning, san francisco firefighters were putting out hot spots up on the third floor of this building when they found that dog alive and doing as well as can be expected given the circumstances. somehow that dog managed to survive the massive fire last night. crews out here. they are wrapping up their mopup operation. they believe they've put out all of the hot spots in the three-story building that caught fire. it has retail stores on the bottom level. it has offices on the second floor. it has a number of apartments on the third floor.

this isate the corner of -- this is at the corner of mission. this fire started before 7:00 last night. flames were shooting from the roof of the building. there are about 18 housing unit ins side the place. all. people who live here were trying desperately to escape the flames and the thick smoke. firefighters were forced to rescue several people who became stuck on a fire escape. and then once they went inside and were able to search the building as this fire was burning, crews found a man unconscious on the top of the building. they tried to revive him. but he was later pronounced dead. in the end, about 50 people were evacuated from units in this building. they were all put up by the red cross and a shelter for the night. we talked this morning with an attorney who has an office here in the building and he spoke to us about the impact this fire will have on those tenants. >> i'm just gratified that, you know, i wasn't involved and i feel really bad for all of the

residents on the third floor. the people that were displaced are actually working-class people and will have a hard time finding a new place in san francisco. >> reporter: this fire also sent a total of six people to the hospital. that includes one firefighter. most of those people were treated for smoke inhalation and are said to be doing okay this morning. we also want to point out here, we had a tenant who spoke to us who escaped from the building and spoke to the crew and said there were no working fire alarms or at least he didn't hear any going off inside the building. the battalion chief said he had no information about that, but that will be part of the ongoing investigation here. the investigation into what caused this huge fire is just getting started. arson investigators will be trying to piece this all together, gather evidence here at the scene and figure out how this huge fire started that left one person dead. >> we'll check back for an update. thank you. 7:06. meanwhile, we've been tracking

a donation website created by a man to help neighbors such as a young person lost many of their belongings in the fire. the fund is at the go fund me website. it's grown to $665. the man says he was riding his bike in the area when the fire broke out. he witnessed families in pain at the loss of their homes and he says he was outraged by what he calls hoards of passersby unremorsably filming the scene on their cell phones. this building is near another building that caught fire back in september. the five-alarm fire destroyed the big house incorporated discount retail store on mission between 22nd and 23rd streets and damaged a neighboring building. three people were injured. inspectors had been worried that merchandise was overcrowding the store. the shop remains closed and it is unclear if it will reopen. 7:07. the number of terror threats made over twitter has spiked in

the past week and a half. nationwide, there have been more than 50 of them with several right here in the bay area as well. san francisco police say someone used twitter to make a bomb threat tuesday night against the federal building. most of the other threats have been made against planes, including two out of sfo. the planes, the bags, the passengers, they were all searched, no bombs were found. the twitter message is often referred to isis. twitter says it suspended all accounts that were the source of recent threats. emotions were really high in san jose yesterday when one of the men accused of causing the crash that killed an innocent bystander who was out jogging walked into the courtroom. >> make sure we get justice. she's our baby. >> about two dozen relatives of kiran pabla were at the arraignment of 24-year-old manuel maldonado. he and gabriel esparza face

charges of vic manslaughter -- vehicular manslaughter. they were street racing police say when they crash and killed the young woman as she was out jogging. slow down. that's the message from the family and friends of kiran pabla. they are now preparing for her funeral. janine de la vega is in san jose where a memorial marks the spot where the speeding cars plowed into her. is the city planning to do anything about the stretch of road? >> reporter: city officials know this area is a problem. they've heard it loud and clear from neighbors. you can see that they have put up these signs that say slowdown remember kiran pabla. mayor and vice mayor have been out here. police have been out here doing traffic enforcement. so has the family of kiran. they held a vigil to honor her memory to make sure drivers don't forget what happened.

>> reporter: as cars travel down yerba buena road, a crowd gathered holding up signs to remember kiran pabla. she was jogging a mile from home when police say two cars racing down the hill lost control, bounced off a guardrail and pinned her to a tree. the accident truck a nerve with neighbors who say it's a dangerous one-mile stretch of road where people speed. paub blea's grief-stricken family was at the vigil. they say she was a hayward college business student full of promise and had a very close relationship with her mother. >> i've never seen a bond like that in my entire life. and, you know, watching them, you know, hug each other and, you know, get -- she's 24 and, you know, the last time i saw her was two weeks ago. she was sitting hugging her, kissing her and when i think of that -- i always think about how loving she was.

>> her family does not want this to happen to anyone else. they are calling on the city to make changes because there have been four traffic fatalities on yerba buena road in the last five years. san jose vice mayor rose herrera did attend. she's working with the city's department of transportation and police to provide the increased traffic enforcement. there is also a temporary radar feedback sign that tells drivers how fast they are going. it will temporarily slowdown traffic but herrera is looking for a more permanent solution and back out here live, you can see this stretch of road. my photographer george and i, you know, have actually been feeling like we have to watch our backs because some of these cars, 40 miles an hour. they are coming down pretty fast. see again, a lot of outpouring of support for family here. people just want to see the cars slow down. back to you. >> yeah. important message there. thank you. 7:11. a 14-year-old boy has critical injuries after bed hit by a car

as he road his bike in danville on green valley road near hope teen. police say he was riding his bike on the sidewalk when he veered around garbage cans and ended up in the road. that's when he was hit by the car. he was flown to oakland children's hospital and underwent surgery. police say the driver is cooperating with the investigation. time is 7:12. palo alto police out there searching for two men who they say threatened an employee at a prize store with a gun during a robbery. take a look at this image. this is the people the police are searching for. yesterday afternoon, they went into a prize store on portage avenue in palo alto. police say they grabbed three game consoles cobble slewed at $1200 and tried to -- consoles valued at $1200 and tried to run out of the store. they were seen in a dark colored sedan heading towards el camino real. two undercover deputies shot at while investigating a

video of discolored water coming from her kiffin and bathroom. she said it doesn't come out black all of the time but even when it's clear, it still smells bad. she contacted the water company and said the representative apologized for the discoloration, assured her the water was safe and said it's an isolated incident. she's not sold especially after hearing from neighbors. >> our water is black and have a smell. >> smells like what? >> like sea. >> light brown, gooey, spiderweb stuff. >> that doesn't sound very appetizing. maria and several neighbors have complained of medical issues. the water company has agreed to pay for bottled water until a plumber can check things out. 7:16. a battle is brewing in san francisco. a public defender was arrested at the hall of justice.

now, this is cell phone video of the incident on tuesday. you can see deputies public defender being handcuffed taken into custody after she objected to police trying to speak to and photograph her client and another man about an unrelated case. she says she was trying to protect her clients' rights. >> i have never seen something like this happen to anyone at the hall of justice, yet, you know, they selected these two gentlemen to give this treatment to. >> as far as we can determine at this point, the sergeant acted appropriately. >> police say she was arrested for obstructing a criminal investigation. she was held for an hour and then released. she wants the case thrown out and an apology from the police department. have to show you a video showcasing tesla's new high- performance car. it focuses on the feature

two dozen birds pulled out of the bay after being discovered with that mysterious goo are now safely back out in the wild. we were watching. look at this, workers with the bird rescue released the birds in sausalito yesterday. for the past couple of weeks, they've been cleaning them and rehabbing these birds. they are among the more than 500 affected by the mysterious gray goo found in the bay. >> i spent last week watching them all. it's nice to see them like that. it's really wonderful. >> the department of fish and wildlife, they are working with federal agencies still trying to figure out what that goo is. there are more than 160 birds still waiting to be released.

rescue and cleanup efforts have cost more than $100,000. a brand-new hospital just about ready to open in san francisco. a ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 10:00 a.m. at the ucsf medical centerrant mission bay. about 200 patients will be transferred there this weekend from ucsf other locations. construction on the 289 bed children's womens and cancer hospital complex began in 2010. ucsf says it was completed on schedule and under budget. a controversial push for schools to ban unvaccinated students. the reason one marin county father says they are putting his son's life in danger. we're live in san francisco where police are investigating the grewsome discovery of body parts found in a suitcase. what leads police have to go off of. suddenly the east bay traffic is getting a little attention here with a couple of

are -- well, they are getting a little more attention now. san mateo bridge, we'll start there because we had an earlier crash on that span. it's gone. but traffic is slow. it's kind of creeping along. it's not completely stop and go but you need to add a few minutes extra to your commute. if you are driving to the bay bridge, the traffic there is taking about a 30-minute wait before you actually even make it on the span which again is within the normal boundaries. steve mentioned eastbound 580 at keller. they were making progress on the crash but it's still slow. westbound is also slow by the way just as we suspect that people are looking at the crash and they are slowing down. 880 is actually a decent alternative at this time. 7:32. back to the desk. >> thank you. a gas truck exploded in mexico city right outside of a maternity in children's hospital and part of the building collapsed injuring at least 54 people, 22 of them children. you are looking at new video here. look at the damage.

the truck was delivering gas to the hospital when that explosion occurred. there are reports some people are trapped but that most of the injuries are minor. many were treated for cuts caused by flying glass. we'll keep an eye on this developing situation in mexico city. we'll bring you more information and pictures as soon as we get them in. back here at home, san francisco police say they have information now about a possible suspect in the gruesome case. someone left a suitcase with human body parts on a street in the south of market district last night. ktvu's katie utehs live in san francisco now. you just talked to city officials. what did they say? >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. within the last 15 minutes, i spoke to someone at the medical examiner's office. that office is tasked of identifying remains. the man says they will issue a press release at some point this morning. he wouldn't give us a time frame or divulge any details but said to expect that update this morning. i want to show you behind me.

there's surveillance cameras along 11th which is -- are aiding in the police investigation. as of last night, police were trying to locate a person of interest. they say they have a distinct description but would not relay those details to us. however, they were following up on that lead. a 911 call came in around 4:115 last night -- 4:15 last night. the caller reported a suitcase left along 11th street with human or animal remains. the medical examiner be confirmed the dismembered remains are human. as investigators located additional body carts, they shut down mission from van ness to 10th. it's unclear if the remains belong to one victim or multiple. >> it's -- it's the medical examiner's job to derm identity -- to determine identity. we'll to what we can to identify the victim and notify the next of kin.

and we'll look at missing person cases as well as any other possible related crimes. >> reporter: officers reviewed surveillance footage from cameras. they say the exact time the cute suitcase was left is under investigation. now, this latest case is the city's 10th homicide. that's for 2015. of course, we will check back in with the medical examiner's office as well as police investigators regarding this homicide investigation. so stay tuned for that. >> all right. katie utehs, live in san francisco. we'll talk to you later. thank you. two alameda county sheriff's deputies were shot at as they investigated a marijuana growing operation in oakland. the two undercover deputies were investigating this building as they were leaving, a man came out, hopped in a car and started following them. he fired several shots into their car. they were able to get away safely and called for backup. more deputies and oakland

police descended on the warehouse and arrested that man. as they looked around the warehouse, they found a blocked door leading to another building. >> we forced entry into that building with a search warrant and we discovered probably one of the most elaborate grows i've ever seen and i've been in law enforcement for about 20 years. >> scar yernt kell little says 2200 plants and 30 pounds of -- sergeant kelly says 200 plants and 30 pounds of marijuana were seized. in a really unusual twist, both buildings back up to a county drug treatment facility. the latest deadline has passed for jordan to turn over an iraqi woman in exchange for a jordanian pilot held hostage by the islamic state terror group. but the latest we're hearing is that jordan wants proof the pilot is still alive before it's willing to go through the

prisoner swap. a japanese journalist says the woman should be taken to the turkish border at sunset. that deadline passed about an hour ago. jordan had agreed to release the woman in exchange for the pilot. it's not clear if the japanese journalist would also be released. and we are hearing some new demands from cuba as the u.s. moves to normalize relations after 50 years. raul castro wants the u.s. to return the military base at guantanamo bay to cuen control. he want -- cuban control and he wants the united states to pay millions of dollars caused by economic damage by the trade embargo. 7:37. starting next month, city streets near north concord, martinez b.a.r.t. station will start requiring parking permits to keep b.a.r.t. riders from parking in that neighborhood. the concord city council

approved permit parking zones in the sun terrorist neighborhood off port chicago highway. the people living in the the area have complained for a long time that once the b.a.r.t. station parking lot fills you up, b.a.r.t. riders park in the neighborhood and block driveways and cause traffic jams. things got worse as b.a.r.t. started to charge a parking fee. kids who start to play tackle football before the age of 12 have a higher risk of memory and thinking problems later in life according to a new study of retired nfl players. that study links youth football to brain-related problems. tests were given to 42 former nfl problems who have cognitive problems. half said they started playing tackle football before the age of 12. on the test, they recalled fewer words from a list that was shown to them 15 minutes prior and they exhibited less

mental flexibility. these findings are likely to rekindle a debate about whether it's safe to let kids start playing contact sports. 7:38. we have new information now about the california measles outbreak. the state department of public health tells the l.a. times, there are 95 confirmed cases. that's eight more than reported earlier this week. 79 of those infections are in california. 52 of them can be linked directly to disney parks. many of these patients did not get vaccinated. the state lab in richmond handles testing for just about every county in the state. the staff says the lab is flooded with samples waiting to be tested. >> it's a lot of volume for one lab, for example, the state health lab to be doing for the whole state. we need to kind of help divide and conquer and do it our --

ourselves. >> the debate about whether to vaccinate your children is hitting home for a school. brian flores is live in tiburon where a father wants his son's classmates who have not had the vaccine to just stay home. and brian is here to explain why. >> reporter: good morning to you. it's not just the debate here in marin county. we're talking about parents in the bay area all throughout the country talking about whether or not to vaccinate their kids. but as you mentioned for one who attend reed, he's demanding the school ban those kids not vaccinated because this could cause complicated for his sons. the man's 6-year-old attend the school. but for the past four years, rhett had to go through several rounds of chemotherapy for

leukemia which is in remission. because of that his doctors can't give him the measles vaccine. he depends on others being healthy or vaccinated. he said if his son comes into contact with the measles or other diseases, it could cause problems for his immune system. the school has been very acomdating to meet the request about vaccinations. they remain concerned since the measles is airborne. in huntington beach, students not immunized were told to stay home for 21 days because of a

investigators in independent near shaw say the copilot -- indonesia say the copilot was flying that plane when it crashed into the sea. the copilot was at the controls. the captain was watching the instruments. the plane was cruising at a stable atmosphere before the crash. a final report is expected in six, seven months. 162 people were on the plane. so far 70 bodies have been recovered. last year's crash of malaysian flight 370 where 239 people were killed, it's now officially declared an accident. the malaysian government says everyone on board is now presumed dead. they've called off the search for survivors. the plane disappeared last march often the way to beijing. it's believed it went down in the indian ocean. the underwater search for the

wreckage continues. the mystery behind the jet that fellow over berkeley has been solved. the fly-by was a navy pilot giving his brother at uc berkeley a personal airshow. the low jet triggered car alarms and scared many people nearby. the navy says it's investigating the incident. the air force plans to replace the president's plane with a newer model of boeing 747. the decision is not surprising since boeing is the only u.s. company that makes a four- engine aircraft suitable for presidential trips. it will be about five years before the new air force one will be put into office. air force one requires high levels of customization for security and comun nipcationcations -- communications. congress must approve spending the money. there are currently two planes in the fleet. but both. planes are 25 years old. whatever plane the president is on is referred to at air force

and baker in san francisco's panhandle area. it's causing some slows as you drive on oak. you might want to think about using another way to get down to the central freeway onramps. 8:02. back to the desk. all right. thank you, sal. we begin with continuing coverage of a large fire in san francisco that killed one man and left dozens of people without a home. the fire started more than 13 hours alone in a three-story building in the heart of the city's miss district. alex savidge is live at the scene where this morning, you learned about a dog's amazing tale of survival. good morning, alex. >> reporter: yeah, tori. good morning to you. a nice story emerging. firefighters very early this morning. they were going through this building and putting out hot spots up on the third floor when they found a small chihuahua curled up inside one of the rooms. they were able to rescue the dog, take care of the dog. it's doing well. it was reunited with the owner. somehow the chihuahua managed to survive the huge fire here last night. the fire started on the third

floor of this building which is at 22nd and mission. here's what the scene looked like when it first broke out before 7:00. huge flames shot from the roof of the place. we're told there are 18 apartment units inside this building. all of the people who live here, they did whatever they could to escape the flames and thick smoke. firefighters moved in quickly. they were forced to rescue several people who got stuck on some of the fire escapes. last night, during a search of the building, crews did find a man who was unconscious in one of the apartment units. they tried to revive him but he was later pronounced dead. all told about 50 people had to be evacuated from the building. they were all put up at a nearby shelter by the red cross. and we talked this morning with an attorney who has an office in this building about the impact this fire will have on the tenants. >> i'm jut gratified that -- just gratified that, you know, i wasn't involved and i feel really bad for all of the residents on the third floor.

the people that were displaced are actually working-class people. they are gonna have a hard time finding a new place in san francisco. >> reporter: this fire also sent a total. six people to the hospital. that includes one if firefighter. most of those people were treated for smoke inhalation. we understand. we also were told by one of the people who lives here last night that there were no working fire alarms. they didn't hear any fire alarms going off last night as this fire broke out. that's information from someone who has here inside the building. we asked the battalion chief about that. he didn't have any information about told us that would be part of the long-term investigation here. as we bring out out here, the work is wrapping you. firefighters have been out here throughout the night keeping an eye on hot spots to make sure the fire was out. now the investigation begins in ernest to figure out how this fire started. emotions were very high

yesterday in a san jose courtroom when one of the men accused of causing the crush that killed an -- crash that killed an innocent bystander out jogging walked into the courtroom. >> make sure we get justice. she's our baby! >> about two dozen relatives of kiran pablo were at the arraignment of 24-year-old manuel maldonado. he and 18-year-old gabriel esparza, they are facing charges of vehicular manslaughter. police say the men were street racing on monday when they crashed killing the young womaned a as -- woman as she was out jogging. janine de la vega was at the crash site as city officials look for ways to make that area safer. janine? >> reporter: there have been several people who have stopped by this morning to look at this growing memorial for kiran pabla. people have left flowers, candles and there are signs here telling people to slow down because this is the spot where two cars hit her.

around 250 people came to a candlelight vigil vigil last night to remember kiran pablo who loved to run. on monday, she was jogging a mile from home when two cars racing down the hill, lost control, bounced off a guardrail and pinned her to a tree. the accident struck a nerve with neighbors who say it's a dangerous one-mile stretch of road where people speed. pablo's grief-stricken family was at the vigil mourning her death. >> she was an amazing person. so much love for everyone. i mean, any time you would be with her, she would love you and take care of you. every moment we spent with hers with a moment of joy. >> her family does not want this to happen to anyone else.

they've been in contact with city officials who say four people have died in this area in traffic-related accidents in the last five years. rose herrera did attend the vigil and is working with the city's department of transportation and police. there is goes to be increased traffic enforcement here. a temporary radar feedback sign will be up today telling drivers how fast they are going and they are still gonna look for permanent conclusions here. paub blah's funeral is -- pabla's funeral is scheduled tomorrow at the chapel of the chimes. steps are being taken now to fix the voting problems. the registrar' office said they should look into office around the clock. they said that could help speed up notoriously slow counting of the ballots. they suggested developing a

system that would require an automatic recount when races come down to the wire. santa clara county last year was the slowest in the state almost for posting returns. hundred of volunteers are out looking for homeless people in alameda county. they will be at streets, hot meals program, all day into tonight. now, this is a special census conducted every two years. it's part of the requirement to get federal money for programs serving the homeless. two years ago, alameda county reported almost 4300 people without a permanent home. 8:09. the number of terror threats made over twitter has spiked. in the past week and a half across the country, there have been more than 50 with several here in the bay area. san francisco police say someone used twitter to make a bomb threat against the federal building tuesday night. most of the other threats have been made against planes including two out of sfo.

all of the planes, bags and passengers were searched. the twitter messages frequently refer to isis. twitter says it has suspended all accounts that were the source of recent threats. a woman in southern california says what's coming out of her water faucet is nothing short of disgusting. don't adjust your tv. the water you see is indeed black. diane who lives in gardena in los angeles county recorded video of discolored water coming from her kitchen and bathroom. she said it doesn't come out black all of the time. even when it's clear, it still smells. she contacted the water company and said the representative apologized and ashoed her the water is safe -- assured her the water was safe and said it's an isolated incident. she's not sold, especially after talking to neighbors. >> the water is black and

two dozen birds that were pulled out of the bay after being covered with a mysteriously gray goo are safely back in the wild. we watched as they released the sea birds in sausalito. for the past couple of weeks they've been cleaning them and nursing them back to health. they are among the 500 affected by the mysterious gray goo found in the bay. >> i spent the last week washing them all. it's nice to see them take off like that. it's really wonderful. >> the department of fish and wildlife is working with federal agencies to determine what the goo is. there are more than 160 birds still waiting to be released.

this is narrowing traffic down on the very busy oak street heading down to the central freeway heading down to the center part of san francisco. you know this street if you use it. it's very crowded. still a little bit of standing water. it was worse than this believe it or not. i would still not use oak street in the panhandle coming out from lincoln. don't do it. do something else. it's not good. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. westbound as you come up to the toll plaza, it's backed up for 25-minute delay. no major problems. there. richmond bridge approach, slow coming into the 580 corridor. when you get there. 101 is okay heading up to central san rafael. but southbound 101 is still robust from marinwood down to central san rafael. back to the desk. san francisco police are busy investigating a grisly

discovery. human body parts stuffed into a suitcase and it was left on a city street. ktvu's katie utehs says the police have information that may lead to a suspect. >> reporter: police say as of last night, they were working to contact a person of interest. they have a distinct suspect description to go off, likely aided by the surveillance cameras behind me. all along 11th street. a 911 call came in around 4:15 last night. >> the caller reported a suitcase left along 11th containing human or animal remains. san francisco police blocked off 11th between market and howard. the medical examiner's office confirmed the remains were human. as investigators located additional body parts, they shut down mission street from van ness to 10th. it's unclear if the remains belong to one victim or multiple. the gruesome nature of the crime and size of the crime scene are all challenges for investigators. >> there's other types of debris in the general area.

flooded with samples wait be to be tested. it's a lot of volume for one lab to be doing for the whole state or even all of northern california. so we need to kind of lep divide and be able to do that ourselves. >> the good news, help is on the way. starting next week, alameda county will begin measles testing at its new public health laboratory in oakland. that will reduce the increasing load coming into the state lab. the debate on whether or not to give your children a measles vaccine is hitting hole at a marin county school. brian flores is live in tiburon where he just spoke with a father who wants his son's classmates who have not had the measles vaccine to stay home. good morning, brian. >> reporter: hi, tori. good morning to you. it's a question many parents are left dealing with nowadays whether or not to vaccinate their kid. as you mentioned here at an elementary school in tiburon, for one father he's asking the school district to ban all kids

from attending schools because they are not vaccinated. now, carl's 6-year-old son attends the school here. rhett had to go through round of chemotherapy for leukemia. because of that, rhett's doctors can't give him the vaccine because his immune system is still rebig from all. chemotherapy. what that means, he depends on others being healthy or vaccinated. the man says in his son comes into contact with the meesles or other diseases it could cause major complicated to rhett's delicate immune system. the family has asked the school to make sure the kid are immunized. the state has been very accommodating to meet the question. but they remain concerned. >> he's healthy. his immune system is great.

he's doing great. he's awesome. i feel for the 89 or 90 kids that have the measles right now. i feel for their parents. i'm sorry for them. i just hope that we don't have more and it doesn't spread more. and i know that going forward that if more people immunize, we can eradicate it again. i'm sorry, it's come back. >> moved here from a different country and system there and you have to -- sometimes you have the vaccine. sometimes you don't. the year he had it, they didn't have it in stock. >> reporter: at palm desert high school, about 70 students were banned from attending class until february 9th because they were not vaccinated. this came after concerns a student came down with the measles. but that student was cleared by medical officials. and in huntington beach students were told to stay home for 21 days because a student who came down with the measles attended class. according to state record, marin county has one of the highest personal belief

exemptions in the state, about allowing parents not to immunize their children. i spoke with carl who said the school district is continuing to work with him on the best best way to keep his son safe. 8:37. new this morning, a gas truck exploded in mexico city right outside of this maternity and children's hospital and part of the building collapsed. at least 54 people were hurt. 22 of them children. the truck was delivering gas to the hospital when this happened. there are reports that some people are trapped inside that wreckage. but most injuries are said to be minor. many were people hit by flying glass. they had been cut. you can see the damage caused by this. we'll keep an eye on the situation in mexico city and bring you more details as soon as we get them in. new this morning, the latest deadline is now passed for jordan to turn over an

iraqi woman in exchange for a pilot held hostage by the islamic state terror group. but the latest we're hearing that is jordan wants proof the pilot is still alive before it is willing to go through with the swap. in a new message, a japanese journalist says the woman should be taken to the turkish border at sunset, well that deadline passed about two hours ago. jordan had agreed to release the woman in exchange for the pilot. it's not clear if the japanese journalist would be released. 8:38. we're hearing about some major new demand coming from cuba as the u.s. takes steps to normalize relations with cuba after 50 years. now, raul castro says he wants the u.s. to give back the guantanamo bay military base to cuba. he wants the u.s. to pay millions of dollars in economic damage caused by the 50-year trade embargo. it's not clear the impact these demand will have on the

negotiations between the u.s. and cuba. by the way, rawl castro also said that full diplomatic relations could be established before those demand are met. 8:38. a new study links youth football to people who have a higher risk of developing memory and thinking problems later in life. the study tested 42 former nfl players who had brain-related problems. half of them said they started playing tackle football before they turned 12 years old. on the test they have problems remembering word on a list that was shown to them just 15 minutes earlier. the results will likely fuel the debate on when it is safe to let kids play contact sports. that's a big issue. now we may know why a military fighter jet was flying real low over berkeley this week. a plane just like that. coming up in 16 minutes, the reported reason behind the pilot's decision and how a uc berkeley student was involved.

the mystery involving the military jet that flew low around uc berkeley may be solved. the jet was a superhornet like this one. according to the website, berkeley side, the fly by was a navy pilot giving his brother at uc berkeley a personal airshow. the low jet triggered car alarms that scared a lot of people, too. the navy is investigating that. 8:54. the air force plans to replace the president's plane with a newer model of boeing 747. the decision is not surprising since boeing is the only u.s. company that makes the four- engine aircraft suitable for presidential trips. it will be about five years before the new air force one prob put into service. air force one requires high levels of customization and security and communications. congress must still approve spending the money. there are currently two in the fleet but both of those planes are 25 years old. whatever plane the president is on is referred to as air force
