and that breaking news is from san francisco. the person with a sheet over his head has been detained by police in connection with this week's discovery of a dismembered body. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville: a mayor break involving those parts found in san francisco. police have detained a person of interest in the tenderloin. we begin with jana katsuyama. she's at the hall of justice where we just heard from police. jana, what do we know so far. >> reporter: the police spokeswoman came out here and gave us a very short summery of what happened tonight.

there was a lot of activity -- a very short summary. police say they had found the person they were looking for in connection with the body parts found in a suitcase. this was in the tenderloin as a residential building called the sala burton manor. they had surrounded the entrance to that residential unit with about half a dozen police vehicles. and at some point they escorted that man out, that man had a sheet over his head. police put him in a squad car and drove away. this is the same person they were looking for earlier that they believe was a person of interest. here's how police officers say they found the person tonight. >> we did receive a phone call through our anonymous tip line about the person of interest could be located on the 400 block of turk street. officers responded and did in

fact, take into, not into custody but we did take the person of interest to the hollow justice. we do have that person. homicide will be working together with all the investigators and all the evidence that we have to find out whether or not this person of interest is in fact, the same person responsible for the crimes. >> reporter: and they emphasize that person has not been arrested at this time. he's being questioned. now the photo of the person of interest that they released earlier shows a man in a ball cap. they say that was a person they had been looking for. a resident of the apartment building there told me that he had seen that very same man going into the apartment building to visit a resident who lives up in the fourth floor. we could not confirm the identity of that other resident. but they did take one other person out of the building tonight. that person did not have a sheet over his head. we showed video of when he was escorted into his car and left

the scene. police tell me they are both cooperating with investigating. and again this is all about that body that was found on 11th street on wednesday. a dismembered torso. they did say today that they have been able to determine it is a light skinned male. at this point the medical examiner has not been able to give an identity. they are hoping these incident that is have been developing very rapidly tonight may help shed some light on that and perhaps find out exactly how that body got there. >> to clarify here. two possible persons of interest here tonight. >> reporter: they definitely said that person of interest that was in the video, that that is the person of interest directly involved in this. the second person they said they were taking in for questioning and they could not elaborate on what the relationship was between the two people or why they wanted that person to also come in. but they are expecting to be interviewing them here tonight

>> i'm kind -- i'm really disappointed to be honest with you. >> reporter: you may recall lake chemiscal was closed while the green algea was eradicated. and many wonder why the same thing cannot be done here. but lake chabot is much bigger and it would be costlier to shut it down. new at 10:00, another security breach at mineta san jose. a security guard saw the man walking along the road on the side of a runway. the guard chased him. the man jumped the fence to get away and was injured. san jose police and the security guard then took him into custody. police say 39-year-old jose mendoza was cited and released.

no flights were impacted during the breech. tonight the man behind some of the biggest names in rap is under arrest for suspicion of murder. suge knight calmly put out his cigar as he was walked into jail. knight was on the set of a movie detailing the rise of the rap group nwa. an argument started then move into the parking lot of this restaurant in compton where deputies say knight ran over the two men and left the scene. one of the victims friend's says his death is a blow to the community. >> he was just a father figure to me and an an array of others that were troubled youth. >> suge knight was also accused

of driving the car from where tupac was killed in. the restaurant instagramed this picture. the stolen wine is said to be worth as much as $300,000. someone stole 76 bottles christmas day and all but four were tracked to a collector in north carolina and were recovered there last week. the person apparently didn't know the wine was stolen and is not considered a suspect. no arrests have been made. the cost to a ticket for the super bowl is climbing as the super bowl grows near. there aren't many tickets left and the price range from $5,000

the upcoming race for the republican presidential nomination was thrown wide open today when former governor mitt romney announced he will not be running again afterall. romney's surprise announcement raises the possibility of a new face at the top of the gop ticket. ktvu's ken pretty credit -- ken pritchett is here to tell us what he's learned. >> reporter: we're a year out from the primary but securing donations now can make or break a campaign down the road. mitt romney has tried and failed twice in his quest to the white house. in the last month with speeches and campaign styled stops he's more than hinted he might give it another go. >> you might have heard i'm thinking of running for president again. >> reporter: that ended this morning in a call to his

as john fowler reports, it's a contagious infection that can lead to death or permanent brain damage. >> about 450 people work at this alameda work center for kaiser permanente -- one worker told us there's lingering fear after a female coworker died a few days ago. we obtained e-mails to a woman working here. it says kaiser has been advised the woman had bacterial meningitis and that employees who worked to near proximity have already been contacted. worry is normal says dr. arthur reingolg. >> those who recover may have permanent damage to the brain. people should generally be reassured that we really don't see transmission of this in the

workplace. >> reporter: in fact, he says that has never been known to happen in the united states. a second case of meningitis has been reported but that one is viral. not contagious, people recover in a few days. in alameda, john fowler, ktvu news. also tonight, we're learning tests came out negative for a second patient being tested for ebola. a person showing symptoms consistent with the virus was admitted on wednesday to a hospital in south sacramento. that person was cleared today and sent home. at uc medical center another patient who had ebola like symptoms also tested negative.

will end up like the building next door, million dollar condos. rob roth, ktvu news. in the east bay, people are mourning the loss of an inspirational coach, husband and father. todd france lost his four year battle with lung cancer this afternoon. he was just 48 years old and he didn't even smoke. french touched the lives of a lot of young athletes he coached lacrosse and football across the tri valley including at san ramon high. french was more than a dedicated coach, he was passionate about helping them develop their skills. tonight kids are bringing candles and lining the driveway in danville. a candlelight vigil is now planned for tomorrow night. tom french is survived by his wife michelle and their two sons dustin and cole. a funeral is being scheduled

when they found that suitcase on 11th street. an anonymous caller tipped them off. officers found the body at a residential building. now a second person was also taken in tonight for questioning. police plan to question the man and could have more details tomorrow. drivers now it, bay area commutes are getting longer and tonight newly compiled data compiles just how much longer. the metropolitan transportation commission says the average bay area commute time has increased more than 16% since 1980. the average commuter who used to spend 24 minutes on the road now spends 28 minutes on the road. new at 10:00, ktvu's cara liu now in the bay area where drivers say all that time in the car can sure feel like a waste, cara. >> reporter: silican valley is of course one of the bay area's major job centers and believe it or not, many silican valley workers have some of the

nestled on college avenue and russell street is reeling from a backlash they never expected. the bay area w canal bells visited the popular spot monday on his birthday and what happened next resulted in this blog posttitled happy birthday, have some racists from elmwood cafe. >> i heard about it like most people did. i wrote about it on the internet and i was just horrified. it's terrible. >> reporter: michael pierce is upset and more than apologetic and here's why. bell who is african american wrote that he visited the cafe for breakfast then returned for lunch. his wife who is white was sitting outside with her friends when she walked up and showed them a book he had just purchased. then pierce says that he heard a knock on the window. he said that he turned and saw

totalling the car inside. the delivery driver told investigators he put on the parking break and jumped out and that's when the trucks just started rolling. he says he ran after it but couldn't catch up. there was one person inside the house but that person was not hurt. family and friends held another vigil tonight to honor a 24-year-old south bay woman killed while out for a jog. members of the siek community held this candlelight vigil. she was laid to rest today. pabluk was out running when two cars that were racing lost control and hit her. her family said something had to change in that stretch of roadways and city officials agree. >> there's actually more people killed by cars than by guns in san jose. and that really should not be acceptable. >> reporter: the city already set up a permanent radar feed back sign.

and they'll possibly look to add a traffic signal in that location. in daly city, police are asking for help tracking down a man who offered a young girl money for sex. the police department released this sketch of the man. the incident happened in early december in the area of 87th street. investigators say the man walked up to the girl and offered her $800 for sex. but when he saw the shocked look on her face he reportedly took off. he is described as a hispanic male in his 20s about 5'7" with a slender build and was wearing a black puffy jacket. authorities are settling up new rules to provide more accurate locations to 911 operators. wireless phone companies must include vertical coordinates for people calling from high rises. the rules will be faced in over the next two years.

wall street closed with more losses. the dow is down 251 points. nasdaq dropped 48 and is down 2% for january. a warm day today as we talked about it. it's been that way really all week and most of january. we've had very warm daytime highs. continues dry. 73 in santa rosa. a listing of temperatures. not much different. sandwiched between two weather systems we talked about that. here's the system to the south that's been productive for southern california. vegas, southwest united states. and this system here is nice looking but it's going to wrong way. it's going right up and over. we're in the middle here. we have coastal fog now. that's a pretty good dose of fog. the fog is showing up in the valley. you have both kinds of fog like we had today. or last night and this morning. but i think the way it's shaping up the winds are starting to blow a little bit offshore. i think this fog by morning

hours is going to be gone. so i don't think we'll have the same dense advisory issues we had this morning. current temperatures are in the 40s. overnight lows will be in the mid- and low 40s. the winds right now we've got a 13-mile an hour wind at fairfield. that's an indication the winds are starting to clock around a little bit. oakland is coming out of the north. with a north-northeast wind that should mix out a lot of the valley fog. it should be gone pretty quickly. so this low pressure center to the south, it stays south, showers stay south. and we're under a high pressure center that keeps us high and dry saturday and sunday. sunday not half bad but instead of low 70s. sunday will be the high spots will be in the 60s. here we are with a chance of rain. this is monday now. you see the jet streams further south. it's been up here for the month. now it's further south. now it's not going to rain on monday but watch what happens on thursday and friday. because the jet stream is
