. a massive fire in san francisco. flames tear through multiple homes. we hear from one victim who actually saw the flames in her home as she tried to escape. . good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. a four-alarm fire in san francisco today. the flames spread through several apartment buildings. tonight, month are than two dozen people are out of their homes in the alamo square neighborhood, mcallister near

scott. cara lui joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: well, ken, right now there is a restoration crew working here at the scene. also, firefighters have been escorting some of the residents back into the burned apartment unit so they can retrieve some of their things. firefighters say when they got here just before 1:30 this afternoon, three apartment buildings were on fire. investigators say they believe the fire started in the corner building here at mcallister and scott, then spread quickly to two other buildings on either side. we spoke with one of the residents home with their grandson at the time. she said firefighters rang her door to let her know she needed to evacuate. >> i saw flames coming up everywhere up there. they came and knocked my windows out. we were running downstairs. we saw the fire in the den next

to the living room. >> reporter: firefighters say all the residents were able to make it out of their homes unhurt, but one firefighter did have to be taken to the hospital for a leg injury and exhaustion. we are told he is expected to be okay. they also tell us about 10 units were damaged by fire and about 25 people were displaced. the red cross is here at the scene helping many of them find places to stay tonight. firefighters also tell us right now the cause of this fire is under investigation, but all indications are that this fire was accidental. ken? >> cara lui, live in the city. thank you. the alamo square fire happened just days after this massive four-alarm fire in the mission district. one person died, six others were injured. as many as 50 people were displaced. tonight, there's a fund-raiser at doc's clock bar on mission near 22nd street tonight. it's located right by the apartment building that was destroyed. until 2:00 a.m., doc's clock will be collecting everything from goods to monetary

donations. now to new developments in a gruesome case involving human body parts found in a suitcase in san francisco. police have made an arrest. cristina rendon is live outside the san francisco county jail, where the suspect remains at this hour. >> reporter: well, police believe mark andrews is behind this grisly crime. his arrest is a major development in this case, but the mystery remains as to the i'd fix of that dismembered body. an anonymous tip to police about the suspect's whereabouts. hours later, andrews was escorted out of a building in the tenderloin, with a white sheet over his head and face friday night. by saturday morning, he was facing a murder charge in connection with the body parts first discovered in a suitcase earlier this week. more remains were later found in a nearby crash can. >> he was booked on murder, so our investigators were able to determine enough evidence. it's believed he was

responsible for the murder of the individual. >> reporter: a man named mark heber was also detained for questioning, but was released. we caught up with him outside his home. he says andrews is a good friend who was visiting him. >> he was here to spend time and they say that he was here. he didn't do it. >> reporter: the medical examiner says the victim is a light-skinned man, but it doesn't rule out the possibility that the body parts only belong to one victim, a thought that has the community shaken. >> what happened was disgusting. >> reporter: andrews has had contact with law enforcement in san francisco before and according to a published report, he also has a criminal history in montana for suspected drug possession, theft and burglary. but heber firmly believes police have the wrong man. >> he treated me like a friend. he-- >> he's innocent? >> yeah. yes, i firmly believe -- i'm pretty sure he was here

wednesday. he wasn't the one. >> reporter: police are still investigating this case and they are hoping to learn more information about a possible motive for the murders in coming days. heather? >> still much more for us to follow up on regarding the investigation. thank you. developing news tonight, the islamic state claims to have beheaded add japanese journalist who devoted his life to covering the stories of people, especially children, living through the horrors of war. the islamic state today released a video today, purportedly showing the killing of kenji goto. the japanese called the killing an atrocious act of terrorism. >> i think of the pain of the family, i don't have any words. the government did all that we could, but it is very regretful result. >> the video comes two days after the group had set a deadline for jordan to release a convicted would-be suicide bomber in exchange for goto's freedom. the islamic state also

threatened to kill an islamic pilot. his fate is unknown tonight. goto had gone to syria last year, reportedly to help another japanese hostage. a week ago, the islamic state released a picture showing goto holding the beheaded body of that hostage. the daughter of whitney houston is reportedly in critical condition after being found unresponsive in her home in roswell, georgia. like her mother's death almost three years ago, the younger brown was also found in a bathtub. police are investigate got the incident. the bay area now has more than a dozen cases of measles, including three new cases. so far, the source of the third case in san mateo county is unknown. two unvaccinated siblings in marin county traced their exposure to the outbreak at disneyland in december.

california now has more than 90 people with measles. the disease has spread to 14 states, including the entire west coast and arizona. >> i think most parents think measles is gone. it's forgotten, but not gone. the outbreaks we're seeing this year are a reminder that measles is a plane ride away. >> the cdc advises parents to have their children vaccinated for measles when they are one year old, with a second shot between the ages of four and six. anyone who thinks they have been exposed to measles should avoid going out in public or wear a breathing mask. the ucsf medical center at mission bay is set to open tomorrow. the 878,000-square foot facility is actually three different hospitals, including a children's hospital and a cancer center. about 200 patients will be transferred to the new facility tomorrow, from ucsf's other locations. the hospital will have the world's largest fleet of mobile robots that are programmed to transport items such as meals,

medications, and lab specimens. federal hospitals and blue shield of california have reached an agreement in the dispute that could have affected the health coverage of 280,000 californians. the sticking point for the contract included rates and a move by sutter to settle legal disputes through arbitration. blue shield said the details of this two-year deal are confidential. sutter said there would not be a lapse in coverage for blue shield customers with ppo, hmo, or cover california policies. both organizations offered apologies to customers over the threat of losing access to their regular doctors. faulty air bags and a fix that often didn't work has led to another recall of more than 2 million toyota, chrysler and honda vehicles. the trouble is with air bags that deploy inadvertently. while the cars were recalled before, the national highway traffic safety administration said today the original fix worked only 85% of the time. about a million toyota and honda vehicles named in the new recalls are also subject to

another recall in connection to defective air bags made by takata corporation of japan. those air bags can deploy with enough force to cause injury or even death. at least five deaths and dozens of injuries have been linked to the takata air bags. the new recalls cover 2.12 million acura mdx, dodge viper, jeep grand cherokee liberty, jeep liberty, toyota avalon models made from 2002-2004. happening now, zombie fans are invading san francisco. walker stalker con kicked off in the city today, with more than 18,000 guests. fans are getting a chance to meet actors and buy memorabilia from the popular tv series the walking dead and lots of horror movies. watching characters deal with a dilemma on screen allows the audience to address their own fears. the event is sold out. it runs through tomorrow. be sure to tune in to ktvu mornings on 2 tomorrow morning

at 8:30. our own allie rasmus will be live at that convention with more on all the undead entertainment. volunteers from all over san francisco found out today -- fanned out to help clean up the city, remove graffiti and planted greenery to improve neighborhoods around the tenderloin and civic center. this was the first of several cleanups that the public works department has planned for 2015. volunteers say the effort feeds their community spirit. >> this is the best place to come and join forces with everybody and feel like one big community doing good for the city of san francisco. >> anyone wanting to help out can join the public works volunteer program or adopt a block to help sponsor the city cleanups. smoke could be seen in many parts of the north bay. fire officials tell us there are no buildings in the area, so crews are monitoring the flames, but say they are letting the marsh fire burn out

be at the university of phoenix stadium for tomorrow's big game. it's a good indication of what's to come for the bay area when levi's stadium hosts super bowl 50 next year. the arizona super bowl host committee officially handed over next year's event to the bay area today during a big ceremony. super bowl 50 host committee posted this photo to twitter to make things official. while the super bowl is a time to celebrate the nation's biggest sporting event, it's also a time for the nfl and host region to give back to communities. ktvu's mike mibach traveled to phoenix to see how the spirit will transition from the valley of the sun to the bay area. >> oh! >> reporter: frank sanders is an inspiration. >> take off, let's go, let's go! >> reporter: a giant in the eyes of these little ball players. >> yeah. >> come on, get this! come on! >> it's such a cool experience. >> reporter: the former arizona cardinal receiver, coaching magic under the sundown on the

francisco, where almost a hundred girls came out to try their hands at different athletic pursuits. >> with your fingertips. with your fingertips. yeah! >> today's fifth annual girls extravaganza sports clinic is put on by the san francisco recreation and parks department. girls 5 to 17 years old had an opportunity to participate in a lot of different sports, including wrestling, basketball, volleyball, golf, tennis, softball and soccer. numerous studies have found that girls who play sports have better body images, reduced risk of obesity, and they do better in school. the coast guard rescued a prominent startup investor, his son and three others who were all stranded hundreds of miles off the east coast. the rescue off north carolina yesterday went off without a hitch. trouble began when the mast broke on the luxury sailboat belonging to pinterest investor brian cohen. his catamaran, dubbed "rain maker" was sailing in high winds and rough seas. cowen told forbes last year he was new to sailing.

the two pilots make an historic balloon journey across the pacific have landed in mexico. the balloon touched down off ba baja california. the duo has traveled farther and longer in a gas balloon than anyone in history. since sunday, they have flown about 7000 miles and they have been in the air more than 143 hours. the previous record was 137 hours, which was set back in 1978. >> incredible. a nasa satellite lifted off from california today on a three-year mission to track climate change. >> 3, 2, 1, ignition start and liftoff of delta 2 rocket. >> the rocket carrying the soil moisture active pass satellite launched before sunrise from california's central coast.

the satellite will measure moisture in the soil. it may help farmers prepare for drought conditions. speaking of the weather, i don't know how accurate car thermometers are, but mine said 82 when i was driving through the north bay, cruising down 101. was it 82? >> santa rosa, ken, was 82. it was in the ballpark, for sure. it felt strange today walking outside. last day of january. >> yeah. >> but today, we had record warmth across the bay area, with lots of sunshine out there, northerly winds kicking up. look at this shot toward the tower, san francisco, city hall, the lower portion of the screen. san francisco just looked like a warm day looking at this camera. you can see san francisco topped out with temperatures in the 70s this afternoon. let's show you this. the records from today, we'll show you the first one coming up. kentfield, 75 degrees. san rafael, 78. san francisco, 74 degrees. these are all records and more

to report for oakland. oakland airport, richmond, san jose reporting its high of 71 degrees. widespread 70s, even 80 degrees up towards santa rosa this afternoon. upper 70s widespread, mid to upper 70s for fairfield, antioch and livermore. also, wrapping up a very dry month, we all know that, a few parts of the bay area received measurable rainfall, but not much. santa rosa, only 0.12. this will be the driest january on record for many locations in the bay area. san francisco, keeping records since 1850. no measurable rainfall. second driest was last year, 0.06. san jose, the 0.02 sets the stage for the driest january on record, january 2015. we could, though, have changes to talk about heading into february. right now, though, we have mostly clear skies, high clouds out in the pacific. temperatures still fairly mild, showing you 60's for san jose.

san francisco, 62. overnight lows will be back down into the 40s to near 50 degrees and patchy fog. in fact, the fog, a little more widespread, making a comeback right near the immediate coastline, pushing back into the bay. that gives you a clue what's happening tomorrow when we cool things off into your sunday forecast. also, a few extra high clouds out there as well, with partly cloudy skies. high pressure really strengthened today up above our heads, way up above in the atmosphere. we had the record heat for today. coastal fog develops into your sunday morning and still a few extra high clouds as well. partly cloudy on sunday. we'll trim back temperatures easily a good 5 to 10 degrees. still the warmest locations could be right around 70. look what happens, though, lots of clouds over the next few days. we're tracking a potential change in the weather pattern. that rain line could be approaching the bay area as early as thursday. better bet by friday and into next weekend, with rain chances going up, especially up in northern california. so we'll keep an eye on that. 60s to right around 70 for tomorrow afternoon. san jose, 69.

weekend, happens today on the eve of the super bowl. the nfl's hall of fame class of 2015 has been announced, and two players who have been disappointed in the past, both with bay area roots, are in. former raider receiver and nine- time pro bowler tim brown was selected. and so was five-time super bowl winner charles haley, who won two of those championships with the 49ers and three with dallas. also getting the nod, jerome bettis, linebacker junior seau, will shields and executives bill pollan and ron wolf. serena williams has put her name deeper in the history of tennis greats in the modern open era. second-all time in grand slam wins, trying to stay undefeated in australian open finals matches. serena in the year court had to get through maria sharapova for the title and sharapova wasn't up for the challenge. serena won the first set 6-3, second set closer with a tie- breaker needed, but at match point, serena nailed an ace for

i'm too tired to go. i have a midterm tomorrow, which i'll probably fail and i was up really late studying. she was. i was up really late doing this. don't even bother coming. i'm quitting today. i'm sick of this guy on the team always making fun of me. he's just jealous because you're the one who puts points on the board. why? because you run the scoreboard. kids: ...run the scoreboard. i'm out, too. but all your classmates will be there. we ignore each other all week. it's nice to have a little break on the weekends. jeez, i've never seen such a bunch of no-getters. coined it! remember keep a positive attitude and good things will happen. two things i bring to every open house -- my lucky pen and a smile. i haven't sold a house all month. do you see me saying "i'm done"? never. because there is no "done" in dunphy. i'll see you guys at the game.
