. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. planes tear through several homes in the san francisco and black plumes of smoke could be seen throughout the city. >> i was scared and he was sciing and i was crying. it was terrible. >> tonight we talked to a woman who saw the flames in her home when she had to be rescued with her great-grandson. >> good evening i'm ken wayne. >> i'm heather holmes and more than two dozen people are witness homes that fire quickly grew to four-alarms with crews racing to the building near alamo square this afternoon. the flames then spread to two more buildings. ktvu's cara liu has been at the

scene where firefighters spect much of the night. >> reporter: they were standing by until just about an hour ago, making sure there were no flare-ups out here and helping to escort residents back to their apartments to retrieve essential belongings. >> i saw flames coming up everywhere there. >> reporter: thick smoke billowing from the four-alarm apartment fire could be seen from miles away, but 71- year-old thelma green didn't even know her building was burning until after a firefighter rang they are doorbell, alerting her to get out. >> because when we were running downstairs we had seen the fire -- you know in the den. >> reporter: she grabbed her great-grandson and ran outside. >> i was scared and he was crying and i was crying. it was terrible. >> thelma's grandson carl, rushed home as soon as we heard what happened. >> as long as she is all right,

i'm all right. everything else can be replace ready & the corner building at scott and mcallister and the other two buildings were on fire. >> the crews did an outstanding job and were very aggressive and they were able to contain the fire mostly to the three buildings are the firefighters say there was minor damage to a fourth building all of the residents made it out of their homes unhurt, but a firefighter did have to be taken to the hospital for a leg injury and exhaustion. he is expected to be okay. investigators tell us about ten apartments were damaged and more than two dozen people were displaced. the red cross is helping many of them find a place to stay. firefighters say the cause is under investigation tonight, but they do believe this fire was accidental. heather. >> carra, good news there wasn't more damage and no one injured. thank you so much. elsewhere in san francisco people are opening their hearts and wallets to those who lost

their homes in a massive fire in the mission district this past week. wednesday's fire in a three- story building at 22nd and mission streets claimed the life of one man, left six people injured and more than 50 homeless including at least eleven children. tonight doc's clock a bar not far from site of the fire held a fundraiser for the victims many of who are long-time residents of the mission. >> it's incredible. people have been coming in tonight with handsful of 20s, 1st, 5s, people from all walks of life, rich, poor, punk, gay, straight, whatever. everybody has been donating beautifully. >> google has promised to donate a dollar for every dollar raised in tonight fundraiser. in addition sell go fund me sites have been set up for the fire. at last check the largest of the those site had $68,000 6 pledges. new developments in a

gruesome case involving human body parts found inside a suitcase in san francisco. police have made an arrest. a second man was also detained. ktvu's cristina rendon calls suspect a good friend. >> reporter: it was these still images of a person of interest that prompted an unanimous tip to police about 59-year-old mark andrus' whereabouts. hours later, police say andrus was escorted out of a residential building in the tenderloin and by saturday morning he was facing a murder charge in connection to the body parts first discovered in a suitcase in the soma district. other remains were found in a nearby trash can. >> our investigators were able to determine enough evidence that believe he was responsible for the murder of that individual. >> reporter: another man was detained for questioning about the body parts found on wednesday, but was released. he says andrus is a good friend who was visiting him. >> he was here at the same

time that they say he was here. he didn't do it. >> reporter: the medical examiner says the victim is a light-skinned man, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that the body parts only belong to one victim, a thought that has the community shaking. >> what happened was disgusting. >> reporter: andrus has had contact with law enforcement in san francisco before and in according to a published report he has a criminal history in montana for suspected drug possession, theft and burglary. >> he treated me like a friend. he wasn't the one. >> reporter: police are still investigating this case and they hope to learn more information about a possible motive for the murder in the coming days. in san francisco, cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. new details now on the

spreading measles outbreak in the bay area now counts more than a dozen cases of the disease, including three new cases. so far the source of the third case in san mateo county is unknown. two siblings in marin county who were not vaccinate ready connect to the outbreak at disneyland in december. coverage hasthe disease has spread to 14 states including the entire west coast and arizona. >> i think most parents think mealses is gone, but it's forgotten, but not gone and the outbreaks that we're seeing so far this year are a reminder that mealses say plane ride away. >> the cdc advised parents to have their children vaccinated for measles when they are 1- year-old and a second shot between the ages of 4-6. anyone who thinkses they may have been exposed to measles should avoid going out in public or should wear a mask. a nice sunset over san

francisco, caps off this gorgeous day. sunny with many places in the 70s. in fact, some even topped out in the 80s and that closes out a warm and examineely dry month of january. >> in fact, in san francisco, we're talking about a record dry month. our meteorologist mark tamayo has those details for us. >> no measurable rainfall in san francisco just amazing with that longstanding record. today the last day of january we're talking about those temperatures soaring back into the 70s, even a few neighborhoods around 80 degrees. so showing you the records from today. quite a few to show you. kentfield 57 degrees, san rafael in the upper 70s. lots of 70s for napa, san francisco, sfo and some more to report for you for oakland, the oakland airport, richmond in the mid-70s and san josi tieing a record 71 degrees. in fact, here is a snapshot of the highs from today across the entire bay area. widespread 70s out there and the 80 is showing newspaper santa rosa, the sonoma county airport. rainfall totes for january not

impressive at all. santa rosa .07th for the entire month. just trace amounts for san francisco -- actually no rainfall for san francisco, and with that, that is the driest january on record. not only for san francisco, keeping the records back to 1850, but also for san josi. only .02" of a inch of rain to report, the second driest january, 1920. so record dry across the bay area this month. we're tracking rain chances and we have some developments with that with the system that could be approaching the bay area in a week. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. >> new at 10:00 a 2.8 quake struck about 6:15 7 miles northwest of napa. napa a serious earthquake in august that caused a billion dollars of damage and that area is still recovering. ktvu received no reports of

injuries or damage from today's quake. tomorrow at thyme we'll know the winner of the super bowl xlix and the seattle seahawks are looking to defend their title and the new england patriots are looking if their fourth title. more than a million people will pour into the phoenix area. there will be thousands of police officers, both today and tomorrow. there will be blackhawk helicopters and massive extra mass x-ray machines and there is a chance that richard sherman's girlfriend could go into labor before the game. if that happens he may have to choose between playing or attending the birth of his first child. >> i think he is going to be a disciplined young man and stay in there until after the game. . this evening crews in oregon rescued three climbers from mount hood, a man and woman were climbing the popular out on the south side of the mountain and fell 600'. the man broke his leg and the woman broke both ankles. a rescue team was training nearby haun helped out and victims were airlifted to safety. team also rescued a third climber who fell into i volcanic hole, but was able to walk out on his own. a financial director with a major bay area governmental organization has resigned following accusations he embezzled $1.3 million. the funds were mentfor park and other improvements in san francisco's somaa. according to the chronicle he admitted to the embusinessment in his resignation letter to the the association of bay area governments and allergically promised to "try my best to get the money replaced." he has notice been indicted or arrest, but reportedly hired a defense attorney. the acclaimed chemist and

long time stanford professor who was widely considered the father of the birth-control pill has died at the age of 91. he spoke with ktvu back on the 40th anniversary of the discovery of the key component used in the first birth-control pill. working in mexico city, he led a team working on the synthetic version of progesterone and said no one released that the keeping implications in 1961. >> i think it was the first time we were really empowered women in a way that they had not been empowered before and that was by far the most important contribution. >> he published 1200 scientific papers and won national awards for his work on the environmental friendly insect control product

terror attack on a korber grocery store in paris earlier this month. a u.s. official tells cnn that the gunmen recorded that attack on january 19t 9th that killed four people. a french reporter says they were able to e-mail the video before he was shot to death. it's not known if anyone received the e-mail, but french authorities were able to get video from the camera that was worn. . tonight the mother of a japanese journalist who was purportedly killed by islamic state of iraq and syria militants is speaking out. she wants her son to be remembered for his kindness and courage. as connor powell reports the woman spoke to reports hours after terrorist group claimed to have beheaded their her son. >> reporter: for the second time isis militants have claimed to murder a japanese hostage and a

sunday forecast. here is the updated forecast model and it's trying to bring in some rain across parts of state. the key here is parts of the state. because look at what happens later in the week: by thursday some rain chances especially to the north coast, cape mendocino we bring anyway chance of showers in the north bay. will you notice the mainline with the focused rainfall up to the north of the bay area. some rain chances later friday into saturday, but it could be one of the day where north bay picks up the rainfall, maybe san josi not picking up much at all. this could be shifting to the south. that is not in the forecast just yet, but there is a chance and we'll keep an eye on that. tomorrow, temperatures in the 60s to right around 70 degrees. here is a look ahead, a sun- cloud mix over next few days and in fact, a few extra clouds for tuesday into wednesday. a chance of shower primarily in the north bay, but heather and ken we'll keep an eye on the
