fox 2 news at 10:00 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. new at 5:00 p.m. a police sting recovered two bikes. each was custom built and they were worth $20,000 each. they were stolen from specialized bicycles. ktvu's ann rubin with more on how authorities got the bikes back. >> reporter: they were reviewing surveillance video of the break in and had identified the get away vehicle when they got a tip there were people who were trying to sell a couple bikes fast. >> reporter: when they showed up for work monday employees at specialized bicycles were in for a shock. the door was smashed smashed and two bikes had been stolen. >> they are two of the most easily identifying bikes. >> reporter: one was in the lobby. the one michal kwiatkowski road and the other was in the museum

area. a limited edition. each bike is worth $20,000. to the folks here they are irreplaceable. >> i don't think they had an idea what they had gotten. they got amazing products. sadly for us. but luckily we got it back. thank you the police for doing that. >> reporter: it was after the break ins police got a tip. someone in town had two bikes and was looking for a buyer. instead of $20,000 they were asking 2,000. >> the detective immediately contacted the individual who was able to describe the bikes. high end specialized bikes. they were able to set up a sting. >> the sing took place here at the strip mall and it led them to a home. it was there that they took the two suspects into custody. ryan balestrini and kannadi

for those offering reduced rent. they are olympianing to -- planning to introduce the legislation in the next few weeks. those two crimes with high end targets in san francisco are having a ripple effect on similar retailers. ktvu's david stevenson is live in the city. as frustrated as they are they can't go all out when it comes to locking down their merchandise. >> reporter: because it puts them in a awkward position. the robbers that came here yesterday burst into the store wearing masks similar to this one. police are scanning surveillance video for clues but it is the latest in a string of robberies that are forcing businesses to adapt quickly. >> reporter: san francisco business groups tell ktvu channel 2 news small stores are eyeing extra security measures in the wake of several break ins at high end retailers.

>> one hit and you have a few thousand bucks in your pocket. what should we do to prevent this from, you know, reoccurring all the time? >> reporter: the latest, three men on wednesday entered the tiffany's store at the west field shopping center, ordered everyone to the ground and forced an employee to open a display case. >> we are concerned they committed this in the middle of the day. >> reporter: police say this and other robberies around the city do not appear to be connected. in november thieves smashed a vehicle into this store. thousands of dollars worth of purses were stolen from this store. and in january burglars used a truck to break into a store. a week later gold nuggets were stolen from the wells fargo ♪. >> studies are show nothing creases in anger in society.

lucky to be alive. a woman drives her car off of highway one and lives to tell about it about 11:00 a.m. this morning. the car drifted from the southbound lane. it went down the ravine. she was able to escape. someone stopped and called 911. >> i hope this isn't going to proceed -- this isn't going to proceed into the water. then i am a dead duck. >> you can see the car was towed away. she is not hurt just shaken up. and she is very appreciative of the people who stopped to help her. the drought in california has forced some farmers to rely on underground water for crops but oil companies are dumping waste water in. they say it is legal but

farmers say in some cases that is destroying their crops. >> reporter: in the farming towns oil drilling and agricultural co-exist but now he says careless drilling and disposal destroyed his orchard. >> we started seeing our trees burning on the tips of the leaves and the leaves turning brown. >> reporter: because of the drought farmers relying on -- farmers are relying on underground orchers where oil field waste water is being -- orchards where oil field waste water is being dumped. the companies had permission from california regulators to put -- regulators to put waste water in the ground. he says this puts prime farmland at risk. >> injecting waste water beside an area where farmers is pumping up irrigation water. >> reporter: an investigation

reveals the state issued permits for 2500 wells that allow oil companies to dump waste water into aquifers. the environmental protection agency warned the state that it wasn't doing enough to protect underground water that is supposed to be saved for drinking and irrigation. >> we are looking closely at how these permits were, you know, allowed. >> reporter: california's natural resources admits mistakes were made. in some cases they used maps like this one from 1875 to check the boundaries of oil fields and aquifers. this summer regulators pulled the permits for this well in bakersfield and 8 others. >> saudi arabia showing up in america. punching holes through our ground industry. >> reporter: they say the permits are proper and valued. >> i think when we go through

deal, we need it. it is a good looking storm. that is it. good looking storm. it will put everybody most likely well over 100% of average. most everybody is. but the story is, the mountains, we need snow in the mountains and at this point the snow levels are above pass level. warm storm. so snow levels will be above 7,000 feet. we will see not a lot of snow at lower elevations. it will work out. nice to get snow to 5,000 feet. saturday's storm is cooler. snow levels will come down and a little bit on sunday. saturday's showers are weak. not a big deal. our break. friday, storm moves in. heavy around noon. 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and saturday we are between storms but showery, unsettled, snow in the mountains. the next storm, storm number 3, that is sunday. it will be a cooler storm and it will bring rain but not as

the ktvu fox 2 news at 5:00 p.m. starts now. bracing for something we haven't seen in weeks. rain storm. crews are getting ready to work around the clock. ktvu's tom vacar shows us how people in areas that could get flooding are getting ready but first to our chief meteorologist bill martin. >> dry out there now for the most part. reports of sprinkles in northern california. the rain doesn't get here till after midnight. the hawaiian islands are down here, we got the moisture that has been focused in northern california, working towards the bay area in the next 24 hours. it is a good 2000 miles of

tonight changes are coming to a bay area hotel. >> came into the hotel. i cried. i didn't know it was this bad. >> changes are coming. after 2 investigates discovered families living in horrific condition. viewers are reaching out to help a mom featured in our report at 10:00 p.m. last night. ktvu reported on the hotel when the owner was convicted for paying someone to burn it down. now the hotel has a new name

and new management. ktvu's eric rasmussen found out life is no better for the people who say there -- stay there. >> reporter: $79 got 2 investigates one night that empyrean towers. within minutes we caught a look at why some people who stay here call it hell. holes in the walls. garbage on every floor. the elevator, broken. we met a 16-year-old and her brother in the lobby. for several months a tiny room has been home to them and their mom. >> came into this room, into the hotel and i cried. i didn't know it was that bad. >> reporter: domestic abuse forced them out of their house. $260 a week does not get them a private bath room. >> my son took a shower and he said brown stuff was coming up.

left behind by firefighters battling a fire at the hotel last july. >> reporter: may we speak to you about the empyrean towers? >> reporter: they didn't want to talk to us about the conditions at the hotel or who was in charge. according it a lawsuit filed last year he went on the payroll with her realty company after he was released from prison. in an e-mail she denied ownership interest in the empyrean towers. meanwhile problems at the hotel are mounting. a tenant recorded this video of a leaking ceiling in december. we needed a flash light to make it up this stair wear where we found -- stairway where we found more problems.
