good morning. looking live at storm tracker 2 all lit up on this sunday morning. strong gusty winds and more rain moving into the bay area. "mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2", sunday, february 8th. i'm crowd -- claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. this is a approach to the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the rain on the camera. on the right our roof camera pointing to the oakland estuary.

rain falling in many parts of the bay area at this hour after cleaning up from the friday storm, already gearing up for round two. who do you want to go to for this? rosemary is watching this. it's here, right? it's coming and looks like it's spread all over. >> that's right. we're moving into primetime. when we rolled in earlier still dry skies. now the rain started, oh, about an hour ago. it's intensifying as we get through the next couple of hours. steady rain this morning, scattered showers for the afternoon. live look there at the bay bridge where it's a gloomy start to the day. in addition to the clouds and the rain as the anchors mentioned we have wind back with us as well and there's a advisory. more on that coming up. you can see the rain is widespread and heavier bands moving in up along the coastline. stretches from south san francisco along half-moon bay, san mateo light to moderate rainfall, along highway 101. 280 will be wet, if you have some place to head out to earlier and perhaps for most of the day we have scattered showers in the forecast as

well. over the santa cruz mountains we have light to moderate rain falling, we'll do a shift in sunnyvale, san jose, into the east bay light scattered showers for the east bay shoreline stretching into san ramon along 680, 580, now moving in. as well as concord, antioch and north bay. it's widespread there at this time. for the next few hours steady rain, heavy at times. by the second half of the day, scattered showers in the forecast, maybe even a thunderstorm because the air will be more unstable for the afternoon. winds not bad now but a wind advisory is very widespread. look at that, it lasts the entire day, winds to 25 miles per hour, gusting to 45 in and around our hills and along the coastline so it's going to be another wet and windy day. talk about how much rain i expect we're going to get and we'll track this, show you when we're going to dry out coming up. sandbagging sites have been popular this weekend. >> landscapers and arborists

have been pretty busy. crews working hard cleaning up from the first storm that toppled trees with the strong gusty winds and water-logged soil. >> it's expected all those crews, they will be in high demand again after today's storm which forecasters and rosemary predicting will bring the wind gusts of more than 50 miles per hour. a crew with ponderosa tree service spent hours cutting up and removing a 90-foot monterey pine that fell across three neighboring yards in berkeley hills. it took down two fence lines and even punched a hole through a roof. >> every time there was a gust of wind i got the heebie jeepies. it was pretty scary. >> that property owner told us the tree was inspected every year and had been trimmed and checked. a handful of people in the bay area are still without power this morning. in morinne county a damaged transmission line blamed for an

outage in one larkspur neighborhood. the street lights are out and homeowners struggling to get by with the lack of power. >> it was a big explosion, then everyone went dark. the lights came on but not all the way. very, very dim. it's hard to read by. we can't turn the computer on. can't cook. can't get warm. >> pg&e pg&e says it's restored power to 99% of bay area customers but the powerful winds blowing back in with the new system are a major safety threat for workers. strong gusts can actually flip the buckets on the utility vehicles and push them into power lines. on friday pg&e ordered all buckets down for safety in two areas friday. here's a look at the danger facing those pg&e crews, a power line in novato fell yesterday at the costco on vintage way. sparked a one-acre fire in the marsh but no one was hurt.

expect travel delays throughout the day. that is sfo, a live picture at the airport, heavy wind gusts, low-lying clouds will slow down flights. yesterday the airport instituted ground delays for short west coast flights. stay with us with us, our weather team all weekend will give you the information you need about the storm on air and on-line clotting twitter and facebook. a fire in oakland is being investigated. it started just before 5:00 this morning on 14th avenue and east 20th street. no residents or firefighters were hurt in this fire. it took about 20 minutes to put it out. fire crews repelled 200 feet down a pacifica cliff in the dark to rescue a stranded hiker. it happened at palmetto avenue and westline drive 4:30 last night. fire crews say a woman who fell down the side of a cliff near muscle rock park. it took two and-a-half hours to get her to safety. rescuers say she suffered

moderate injuries. a crash in san francisco put three pedestrians in the hospital. it happened before 8:00 last night on 14th street and south van northwest avenue not far from the -- van ness avenue not far from the 101 entrance. two vehicles collided at the intersection, one continued to roll and then struck three people who were walking in the crosswalk. the victim were taken to sf general with life threatening injuries. the drivers were not hurt. operations at all 28 west coast ports will be suspended again today. that includes oakland which is considered the fifth busiest port in the country. shippers and terminal prittors shut down vessel loading and unloading at the ports yesterday. they claim workers have slowed down work for months because of drawn out negotiations over a new contract. >> we're getting to a point, a breaking point where the system is really sort of collapsing under its own weight. we're experiencing significant delays and back lost. >> they really need to get back to the bar gabbing table and get this thing settled because the consequences for americans

and workers are too big. >> port workers from southern california actually came to oakland to protest the shutdown. the ports are expected to reopen tomorrow. some economists say the regional economy loses as much as $2 billion every day those ports are closed. the strike at the oil refinery in martinez continues, steel workers remaining on the picket line. >> stand up! >> fight back! >> refinery staff has to cross through the line to get to the plant. police were called for that strike but no arrests were reported. the shortage shut down for previously scheduled maintenance but it may stay closed a little longer. >> we want to get the contract. we want to get training for our employees, training that we're involved in. and we want safe refineries. that's what we're here for. >> last week our camera caught this truck, blowing through

that picket line. it's a decent rate of speed. no one was hurt. it's the first time in 35 years there's been a strike at a major oil refinery or at major oil refineries across the united states. shell oil leading negotiations for those refineries says the strike is not expected to disrupt operations. it's still unclear how muchen an impact the strike is going to have on california gas prices. those prices are getting higher. the average price for a gallon of regular is now $2.62. that is up 17 cents in the last week. and very close to what we are paying if you remember at the beginning of january. experts say two other factors could be to blame. california refineries are beginning that conversion to the more expensive summer blend gas and crude oil prices are also up.

the powerball jackpot is expected to hit $450 million. no one won the $390 million last night's game. two tickets bought in southern california though did match all the numbers except the red powerball number. the tickets are worth $1 million each. here are the numbers. it's billed as one of the largest travel shows in the country. visitors are going to learn everything from discount hotel reservations to under the radar vacation spots allie rasmus joins us live from the santa clara convention center. >> reporter: more than 1,000 different vendors from all over the world, travel experts talking about different places you can go and check out. i did a quick walk through, through the convention center

and saw booths from many countries. including maces closer to home, the nevada section here. you can see there's a booth from mendocino county. in this area where i'm standing this is called the yosemite pavilion. different places, folks in the bay area can check out within five hours' drive from where they live. whitney lennon is the director for the mammoth lakes tourism. tell us about some of the things people can do in yosemite valley. a lot of people think of yosemite and think of the park. >> it's surprising, the area that surrounds the park is really just an extension of the park but we also have a lot of great additions like wine tasting in the area. you have the wine trail in oakhurst. you have zim lining in mariposa. zip lining. world class white water rafting. you can kayak on the east side. there's a lot of variety. thought the area. >> reporter: we have to point out what is going on here behind us because you can hear

them. they are rock climbing on the rock wall you have. is this something that anyone can do with a little bit of training? and can they get the training if they go on a trip to yosemite valley? >> absolutely. this is for adventurers of all ages. you can just hire a guide, any age and they can get you up a great piece of wall. it may look intimidating but they will take you step by step and it feels more natural than you would think it does. >> reporter: publicity has gotten -- it's gotten with the two climbers on el capitan. you don't need experience? >> yes. this is a free event and we can get to you the top. >> reporter: thank you so much. the travel adventure show is from 11:00 to 4:00 at the santa clara convention center. kids $tickets $11. kids under 16 are free. organizers says one reason to check it out, you cannot only talk to the vendors that do the tours you might want to book or

involved in a multicar crashed that killed a woman. this photo taken by tmz showing jenner at the crash scene. he was not hurt but seven people did suffer minor to moderate injuries in the crash. it happened yesterday at noon on the pch malibu. law enforcement sources call it a chain reaction accident involving four vehicles that apparently started when a prius slowed down and was rear ended by a white lexus. that lexus then hit from behind by jenner. >> bruce jenner's car, when it struck the lexus the lexus went into oncoming traffic which struck the southbound h2 hummer and the driver of the white lexus was pronounced dead at the scene. >> investigators say jenner was being followed by paparazzi at the time but he was not being chased. and they were not a factor in the crash. early this morning pennsylvania police arrested a

17-year-old boy for the shooting of three people in a pennsylvania mall. police have not released his name but say they identified him by matching surveillance video with images on social media. investigators are calling the shooting a targeted attack. they say the teen went in a macy's and shot a 20-year-old man, two bystanders were also wounded. both male victims are reportedly in critical condition, a female victim is in stable condition. former oakland raiders quarterback pryor tweeted he was in the mall and saw two people get shot. he was not hurt. a richmond man arrested on charges of open fire in a fairfield grocery store. witnesses say 43-year-old sean glassberg fired several rounds near a food max store and one round inside. when officers tracked him down they say he threw a handgun on the ground. no one was hurt. bay area mass transit has become less popular in the last two decades. a study shows people in the bay area took 35.1 million trips on public transit during a typical

week day in 2013. that is down 100,000 from its peak in 2001 according to the 34áe79 transportation commission. the overall decline happened even while the population in the bay area was growing and ridership on bart and cal train being at record levels. time now is 7:16. if you're peeking outside your window and thinking is it here yet? the answer is yes. it's here and more is coming? >> it is. i think during the next few hours, is web we'll see the steady heavy rain. by afternoon we break to scattered showers, with the scattered showers the possibility of a thunderstorm, maybe two. a little had bit of unstable air moving in for the second half of the afternoon and oh, did i mention the wind is coming back as well? let's look outside our doors. you can see plenty of gray to go around. even patchy dense fog reported for areas. the winds will come along and push that out of the way but the rain is here to stay. once that steady rain moves through it will be off and on the rest of the afternoon. on storm tracker we'll see where it's, again, at its

heaviest, began to move in 5:30, 6:00 this morning. we had some steady heavier rain that moved through in san francisco but it's now off, it's a wet day over the bay bridge, we have wet weather over the san rafael richmond bridge. as we slide along the peninsula, moderate rain along 101, 280, san mateo bridge, palo alto, all the small areas in between. santa cruz mountain good rain falling. south bay widespread light rain falling and into the east bay as well from the east bay shoreline, hayward, oakland, union city, stretching into the valleys. and into livermore. one last shift to the north, show you walnut creek, concord all getting in on this. to the north bay where rain is falling in areas along 101, could be heavier in here between santa rosa and petaluma. the winds will be picking up, i think they will be gusty for the afternoon. be prepared for that. as we get into the second half of the day this rain continues to push to the east. we'll have the wind and then we'll have the scattered

showers. mountainview reporting 16 miles per hour now. that wind at livermore at 6 and san jose 7 so not too bad. sfo at 13 miles per hour but as i mentioned at the top of the hour we actually have a wind advisory for the entire day. with some gusts along the coast and hills reaching to about 50 miles per hour. let's talk about rainfall totals. looking anywhere from 2 to 3 inches for the coastal hills, santa cruz mountains, get into the south bay, half-inch to 3/4 inch, maybe inch for some areas that get a little more, around the central bay 3/4 inch to inch, inch and a quarter and north bay expected to pick up two inches from this. it's good news in addition to what we had friday. a cooler start in the numbers but still not bad. upper 50s in san francisco. 58 hayward. 57 redwood city and 57 napa. for the afternoon our numbers a lot like what we had yesterday. widespread 60s in the forecast. 63 pacifica. 68 san jose and 69 santa cruz. relatively mild, in fact i walked outside yesterday and thought wow, it's really muggy.

it was very cloudy and kind of warm and that's with a we'll have again for the afternoon today. in addition to the rain, the wind, continuing through the day, we'll wake up tomorrow morning with scattered showers. then we begin to dry out, ridge of high pressure builds back in and we're back with 72 degrees and mostly sunny skies by mid- week wednesday. >> that rain tomorrow morning, just in commute hours? >> i think we'll have scattered showers. shouldn't be too bad. >> i'm curious about the thunder today. 7:20. popular bay area company recalling valentine's day candy because it could make people sick. see's candy says some red heart- shaped boxes are not properly labeled. the recall affects all 8-ounce classic red hearts with assorted chocolate. people with allergies to coconut, walnuts, almonds or

dozens of people showed up for a vigil for the jordanian pilot who was burned alive in syria. a man says even though no one in the bay area actually knew the pilot his death still feels like a personal attack. >> even though this tragedy happened 9,000 miles away it feels it's only 100 feet away. we feel like he's right here with us even though he is not physically with us, his spirit will remain with us. >> jordan has already retaliated with a series of airstrikes on suspected isis strongholds. transasia airways started to give money to the families of passengers who died in last week's crash in taiwan. the airline is distributed $38,

000 for the families for funeral costs. today drivers tried to find -- divers tried to find the bodies of three people still missing. at least 40 people died after the plane crashed into a river minutes after takeoff wednesday. 15 people were rescued, preliminary investigations indicate the pilot shut off a running engine after its other engine went idle. friends and family members continue to surround and pray for the daughter of bobbi kristina brown and the late whitney houston. bobbi kristina brown has been in a medically induced coma after being found unconscious in a bathtub more than a week ago. according to tmz doctors told the family nothing more can be done. a decision about life support is now in the hands of her father, singer bobby brown. singer and actress jennifer hudson talked about bobbi kristina during a recent interview. >> all we can do is pray for her. and send well wishes but at the same time be understanding that first this is a human being, this is a person who suffered a drastic loss and she's young.

into taking a live look outside on i-580. a lot different than when i crossed that this morning. the roads were dry, now wet as that weather is moving into the bay area. welcome back to "mornings on 2", i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. let's start with a look at the weather. rosemary warned you you need your umbrella today and you delivered. >> thankfully the fan fest today is going to be indoors. >> horrible? >> otherwise you definitely need your umbrella through the morning hours. it's going to a steady sweep over the area. as we get into the afternoon it will break up a little. it will be more hit or miss but it's not going away. it's going to stay with us the entire day. giving you a live look at that gloomy start to the day. now on to storm tracker 2 where we're tracking light to moderate rain but look, it's everywhere at this time. if we slide in a little closer we'll look along the peninsula where we've got rainfall rates, looks like about 3/10 inch an hour. keep in mind it's not going to stay put, it's going to keep pushing off but this is where

we're seeing a little more heavier rain from san mateo through redwood city and woodside, palo alto included, los altos, sunnyvale, a steady light rain over the small communities. campbell and along highway 101 through morgan hill and gilroy. santa cruz, light railing falling here. over the santa cruz mountains it's a little heavier but around the beach not too bad. san ramon, pleasanton, livermore, a light rain. lighter shades indicating maybe just a little drizzle. but look what's to come. moderate rain just on the east bay shoreline there. as we get into the north we have areas around valejo, around american canyon area, we've got over the north bay, santa rosa picking up pretty steady rain at this time. one last shift along the coast, light to moderate rain now falling over areas like inverneness, salinas. as we get into the second half of the day we'll continue to see the rain but again it will be the on and off. not the steady rain that we're

seeing now. this is sort of primetime. wind advisory for the entire day, wind gusts expected 45, i'm actually going to upgrade this because along the coast and in the hills we're talking 50 to 55, these winds definitely strong enough to topple trees, bring down power lines, it's going to be a lot like what we had just on friday. giving you a look here at the numbers. we are expecting any where from 2 1/2 to 3 inches along the coastal hills and santa cruz mountains. for urban areas, 3/4eu6r7b8g to inch and a quarter. a little less than at that for the south bay. the north bay could get another two inches out of this. this is great news. 54novato, 64 for redwood city. for the second half of the afternoon the numbers barely budge from yesterday. widespread 60s. low to mid-60s for the north bay, central bay. get into the south bay, 68 san jose. 69 degrees for santa cruz. let's take care of that extended forecast. so rain this morning, followed by afternoon showers, we will have the possibility of a few

thunderstorms, that means hail, lightning, won't be widespread but we're going to leave that in there. as we get into monday morning we start with a few scattered showers, then we dry out for the second half. then we're dry tuesday, wednesday, thursday, temperatures rebound back in the upper 60s to low 70s as we get into tuesday and wednesday. then holding steady for thursday. back to you. homeowners have been preparing for this wet weekend for some time. keeping those sandbags site busy because they are worried about flooding on streets and private property. >> today's storm could be a repeat of the first which toppled trees because of the 50 mile-per-hour wind gusts and water-logged soil. pg&e crews have been scrambling to restore power throughout the bay area. >> a lot of people stuck in the dark. nearly 1,000 homes and businesses lost power at some time this weekend. service has been restored though for 99% of pg&e customers. but with the second storm coming in utility crews are standing by. >> they tell us that when electricity goes out their goal is to restore power within 24

hours. while it's raining here in the bay area, parts of the sierra are getting new snow. >> some areas actually saw more than a foot of fresh powder. more snow is expected today in the higher elevations and as you might imagine that snow welcome news for the tahoe resorts following the bone-dry january. with presidents' day weekend which is typically a big one for skiorings and snowboarders next weekend resorts are hoping fresh snow will attract more people to the slopes. at 8:15 we talk to kirkwood about the current ski conditions there in lake tahoe. >> skiers and snowboarders not too bad when you talk about mammoth ski resort. they got a foot of new snow. then you got the more snow coming so they are expecting those totals to top 3 feet at elevations above 8, 000 feet. >> california's drought is sending some local skiers actually out of state looking for some good snow. downhill and snowboarding resorts in the sierra are able

to make snow but the reason warmer storms dumped rain instead of snow at elevations below 8,000 feet. nearly all the cross-country resorts can't make enough snow to cover ground. >> many californians are going to idaho and washington state, just looking for other places to enjoy that winter sports. you don't want winter to go away without hitting the slopes. the blizzard of 2015 continues to pound the northeast united states. >> the national weather service predicts some areas of new england could see up to 2 feet of new snow by tuesday morning. the two brutal storms already hit the northeast in the past two weeks closing down airports and shutting down schools there. >> if you talk about boston it actually set a record for the most snowfall in a 7-day period. they got more than 40 inches of snow. >> i am getting tired of doing this over again. yeah, it just stopped. somebody left the freezer door open and they really should close it. >> hardware stores are selling

out on winter supplies. some folks say because of the heavy use the season they are now on their third ice scaper or snow shovel. a wildfire burning south of the lake is 50% contained. it's burned 7, 000 acres, almost 11,000 square miles. already destroyed 40 homes and other buildings near the border. wind gusts hit 75 miles per hour. that did force evacuation of paradise and small meadows towns. there's a go fund me site to help the fire victims. $7, 000 has already been pledged on that site. thousands of protesters went to oakland to demand governor brown ban fracking in california. >> county leaders don't frack! >> demonstrators say studies show fracking which is short for hydraulic fracturing is making the area worse.

they say it threatens the state's fragile environment. >> we need to follow the lead of scientists, the state of new york and others throughout the nation who are recognizing that fracking endangers our drinking water and can even make birth weights worse. >> they are using fracking as a trojan horse and really the end goal is to stop the production and with the economy of our scale it doesn't make sense to stop our use of fossil fuels overnight. >> governor brown set a goal of california getting half its energy from renewable sources in the last 15 years but hasn't spoken against or in favor of fracking. as concern over the measles grows some parents are taking matters into their own hands and -- by hosting measles parties. organizers say having unvaccinated children interact with infected children. the whole idea is that parents can get their children sick once and then they are done for the rest of their lives but some other parents think this

is a very bad idea. >> how do you tell a little kid don't scratch yourself? or to -- i would rather them have the vaccination. >> be like come on over and let's all have the disease to get it over with! not worth it. >> the california department of public health is warning parents against having measles parties. public health officials say they believe in immunization rate of at least 90% is critical in minimizing the potential for a disease outbreak. a new report says more than 1/4 of schools in california have measles immunization rates for kindergarteners that are well below that level. part of this is driven by parents who have opted out of vaccinating their children by claiming a personal belief exemption. according to "the new york times" exemption rates in morinne county are nearly three times the state level but that trend appears to be reversing. the milwaukee health department

helped people prepare for the uptick in measles infections by handing out free vaccines this weekend. a health center was open for special hours looking for those to get their children protected against measles. milwaukee got a special waiver from the state to give the vaccine for free. a record crowd spent a lot of time but not a lot of dollars at an unusual state action. >> anybody have $15? >> it's the state surplus auction that has five times a year in sacramento. everybody g everything on the action block has been seized or found by government agencies around the state including the chp and tsa. >> a lot of people leave jewelry at the counter and we're able to bring it here and offer it to the public >> some people say they come to the auctions every year. one man said he bought new computers for $70 each. the state had 1,200 items available and made $100,000 in all. the next auction is scheduled

have been really busy too. the crews really trying to clean up from the first storm that toppled trees and brought strong winds and waterlogged soil. it's expected they are going to be back in high demand after today's storm bloases through. forecasters predicting this one is going to bring wind gusts of more than 45 miles an hour. >> a crew with ponderosa tree service spent hours cutting up and removing a 90-foot monterey pine that fell across three neighboring yards in the berkeley hills. the tree took down two fence lines, even punched a hole through a roof. >> every time there was a gust of wind i got the heebie jeebies. pretty scary. >> the property owner told us that tree was actually inspected every year and had been trimmed and checked. tough thing for it to fall down. pg&e crews are also working overtime this weekend across the bay area. even beyond toward the oregon

border. from friday to this morning 90,000 cuffed merce lost power at one time or another. >> what pg&e did, brought workers from other states just to make sure they have enough people to try to get the lights to stay on. we actually went to one neighborhood in lark spur where the street lights went out and the homeowners had to get by without much power. >> there was a big explosion, and then everybody went dark and then the lights came on but didn't come all the way. very, very dim, hard to read by. we can't turn the computer on. can't cook. can't get warm. >> pg&e says it's restored power to 99% of bay area customers but those powerful gusty winds blowing back into the bay area with the new system are also a major safety threat for workers today. strong gusts can flip the buckets on the utility vehicles or even push them into the power lines.

stranded hiker. it happened in the area of palmetto avenue and westline drive 5:40 last night. fire crews say a woman fell down the side of a cliff near muscle rock park. it took them about two and-a- half hours to get her to safety. rescuers say she did suffer moderate injuries. a crash in san francisco put three pedestrians in the hospital. it happened just before 8:00 last night at 14th street and south van ness avenue not far from the 101 freeway entrance. according to san francisco police the two cars collided at the intersection, then one of them continued to roll and that is when it struck the three people walking in the crosswalk. the victims were taken to sf general with life threatening injuries. the drivers were not hurt. operations at all 28 west coast ports suspended today, that includes oaklands, considered the fifth busiest port in the country. shippers and terminal operators shut down vessel loading and unloading at the ports yesterday. they claim workers slowed down work for months because of drawn out negotiations over a

steel workers. >> we want to get the contract, we want to get training for our employees. training that we're involved in. and, we want safe refineries. that's what we're here for. >> last week our camera caught this tanker truck blowing through that picket line at a decent rate of speed on his horn. fortunately no one was hurt. this is the first time in 35 years there has been a strike at major oil refineries in the united states. shell oil leading negotiations for the refineries say the strike is not expected to disrupt operations. what is still unclear, how muchen an impact that strike could have on california gas prices. you might have noticed the prices are getting higher. the average price for a gallon of regular is $2.62, which is up 17 cents in the last week and pretty close to what we were paying at the beginning of january. but experts say two other factors could actually be to blame. right now california refineries are beginning that conversion to the more expensive summer blend of gas and crude oil prices are also up. let's look at the prices

this is a live look at kirkwood ski resort. seen several new inches from this latest storm joining us is kevin cooper from kirkwood. we like to call him "coop." good morning. >> how are you today? >> ok, you're probably we are than me because you're on the slopes. that live picture looks really good. >> it does. the sun is starting to come out. we're seeing some high clouds starting to come over now. temperatures overnight 31 at the base. 27 at the summit. but 8 inches at the base, 7,800 feet with 11 inches at the summit, 9,500 feet over the last 24, 48 hours it's setting us up for a really good presidents weekend here. >> you don't want it much higher. you don't want to worry about

that rain. >> the -- mother nature plays a cruel game, she comes in and this year that isothermic layer affected this last storm. just on the other side in pioneer we saw up to five inches of rainfall but here we had rain and snowfall. so it came in as rain, warm, about 39 degrees at the base. up at the summit between 7,800 and 9,500 there was about a 5- degree variance. we had snow at the summit, rain at the base and then overnight it turned to rain from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. then started to snow again yesterday. >> i was talking to a producer and she was like should i go? should i not? is it going to be nice? you finding your -- you're maybe struggling to get the word tout to get people to doubt out just because the weather is so weird between the dry january and rain now? >> it is, it's tough to get the word out especially in the sacramento to the bay. you've seen great weather, 70 degrees. i mean ocean beaches look like

bay wasp the last 30 days -- bay watch the last 20 30á days down there. year to date snow totals, 80 inches at thebase, 120 inches at the summit. now another dynamic pacific system you're probably feeling now which is colder. so we're looking at snow showers today coming in late, mid-afternoon. one to four inches of 8,500 feet, winds picking up. then tomorrow, monday, another 2 to 4 inches, maybe six plus but you will see more of that now than we are here. >> we heard about how people are going up to idaho and washington state looking for snow. i know that is not what you want to hear. at -- how important is presidents' day weekend when you talk about the bottom line and making sure the season is successful in dollars and cents? >> for this area in general it's been a great year. last year people felt we didn't get enough snow. we had about 365 inches last year in kirkwood.

>> i felt it was a kind of a string -- spring storm. >> yesterday muggy and temperatures in the 60s. this is a warm storm. because of it the sierra unfortunately not picking up as much as snow as they should be or at least if it were a cold storm. at the east bay here, we started fairly dry at least early on. then by 6:00, 7:00, it moved onshore and now it's very widespread. since we were just speaking with coop and up over the sierra you can see as he mentioned not getting in just yet. but it is moving. it's going that way and they should see some by the second half of the day. into monday as well. for us it's moving through now. it's a fairly quick mover. look at this, just over -- this is a one-hour time lapse. look how fast it's moving through. on the back side we're still going to have rain but not this steady rain. it will be more of the on and off what we call scattered showers. then for the second half of the day enough instability included with this to perhaps fire off a

few thunderstorms. so we'll be tracking that as well. let's get to the north bay where we have moderate rain falling along highway 101, hillsburg, petaluma. sonoma, you got light rain. it's hard to find any place that doesn't have at least a little at this time. along the east bay shoreline, 880, stretching down areas, i- 80 as well as 880 from oakland and hayward and then as we get into the east bay we have 680 along highway 4, steady moderate rain falling. we've got hayward down through livermore or off to the east. then shifting into the south bay, just a very steady light rain over areas like campbell, san jose, palo alto. a few pockets here. we have light to moderate rain falling. we had a little bit of heavier rain over areas like san mateo but looks like you're sort of in between with more to come on its way in. the winds have been increasing and as we get into the seconds half of the day the winds are expected to be gusting in many areas especially along the coast, especially in our hills. talking 50 miles per hour or so. so with that a wind advisory

that i spoke about just a little while ago. and in the last hour i have seen the winds pick up. oakland 16 miles per hour. gusting to 23. still light, we have a breeze in napa as well as novato but not too bad. shifting to the south we have winds at about 15 in san jose and gusting to 24. let's look at how this is going to play out. 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, so the steady rain will move through in the morning hours. look at the back side, breaking away to scattered showers for the afternoon. scattered showers continuing into the overnight hours. scattered showers for monday morning drive and then it's gone. a look at the rainfall totals anywhere from one to three inches for many of us, the hills will get most anywhere from 3/4 to inch and a quarter for areas along the central bay. temperatures like yesterday, a lot of 60s. 6 for redwood city, 69 morgan hill. dry and rebounding into the low 70s by mid-week.

olympic gold medalist and reality tv star bruce jenner was involved in a multicar crash that killed a woman. this photo was taken by tmz showing jenner at the crash scene talking to the firefighter. he was not hurt but seven people suffered minor to moderate injuries in the crash. it happened yesterday around noontime along pch in malibu. law enforcement sources called the crash a chain reaction accident involving four weeks. it apparently started when a prius slowed down, was rear ended by a white lexus, that lexus was then hit from behind by jenner. >> bruce jenner's car, when it struck the lexus the lexus went into oncoming traffic which struck the southbound h2 hummer and the driver of the white lexus was pronounced dead at the scene. investigators say jenner was being followed by paparazzi at the time but he was not being chased. and they were not a factor in that crash. a richmond man arrested on

in the south bay, let's look at the widespread light showers from palo alto to sunnyvale. san jose included there with showers continuing over the santa cruz area. on the big picture, we have steady rain. on the back side this is where the instability lies, this is where the colder air lies. when this moves through is when we will see the best possibility of thunderstorms. so in the 8:00 hour, 9:00, 10:00, notice it becoming a little lighter, you can see on the back edge beginning to break up a little more. by noontime widespread scattered showers, we now have rain and a little bit of snow pulling into the sierra. into 3:00 still widespread scattered showers, this is going to be the call for the afternoon. winds will be picking up as well. as we get into 1:00. anywhere from 25 to 35 to 43 miles per hour reported at half- moon bay and just going on and on. i shifted to 11:00 tonight and the winds are still blowing. temperatures, we could take care of this fast because we're a lot like yesterday. upper 50s to low 60s. for the afternoon, low to mid- 60s in the forecast. mid to upper 60s for areas like

sandbagging sites have been popular spots over the last few days. arborists have been busy. crews have been working hard cleaning up from that storm on friday that toppled trees. it's also expected that there will be back in high demand after today's storm which as you just heard rosemary talk about will bring wind gusts of more than 45 miles per hour. a crew with ponderosa tree service spent hours cutting and removing a 90-foot pine that fell across three neighboring yards. it took down two fence lines, even punched a hole through a roof. a property owner tells us this tree was inspected every year and had been trimmed and checked. in marin county a damaged transmission line is being blamed for an outage in one neighborhood. streetlights are out and some homeowners are struggling to

>> regardless of how strong the dollar is or how weak the euro is, it's important to travel smart. enjoy the planning part of your trip. people often underestimate the importance of their time. we americans have the shortest vacations in the rich world and we wait in lines needlessly. you can find alternatives to expensive hotels if you have good information where you can travel quite economically. this year the dollar is 20% stronger than last year so that's good news for everybody. but way not go to a place just because their currency is lower than our currency. i think you should follow your travel dreams. if your dreams are to go to norway, and somebody said portugal is a good deal this year, you should go to norway. >> a lot of americans when they think of a trip to europe, they think of rome, london, paris. what are some of the other cities that are less popular that you wish more americans would travel to? >> i spend four months a year

running around europe every year. i write guide books to every country and every city in europe. i've noticed that a lot of the second cities, the cities are the old rust belt days, are coming to light. of course you want to go to edinboro, but when you go there, why not go 45 minutes away and get a vie vid and emy look at what's happening today in scott lapped. >> why are those cities more interesting to you now? is it because they're becoming -- maybe ainvolving? >> they were boom towns in the industrial age, and suddenly in the modern age they sort of are cocooned, and suddenly there's a regeneration and new investment. all over europe the minor ports were just no man's lands, and now all over europe the great cities are turning their industrial ports into people

out of the year, anything new that's attracting his attention as something we should look out for? maybe it's an app, maybe another way to get around. >> so claudine is asking about the technology and some of the innovations in travel. is there any sort of app or website or something that has caught your eye? >> generally i think the apps available are more distracting than helpful. i'm not a big fan vassments i've got my own app that gives people self-guided tours to 40 of the great walks and museums in europe. tens of thousands of people are downloading and using that. but it's really important for you to be connected. last time i was in venice, all these lovers in the boats were not looking at each other, they were looking at their screens. you've got to be there in the moment. i don't think there's any magic new app. of course i write guide books, and now we're competing with yelp and trip advisor. those are sources of good information but someone has to

♪i'm singing in the rain just singing in the rain ♪ >> mostly cloudy skies, the rain still falling, although not as heavy as where we were this morning. let's take a look at what is going on out there. into the radar we go once again. notice a little bit more broken up than what we had when we started at 7:00 this morning. it was widespread. we even had pockets of heavier rain over the north bay. but now we're already beginning to see a transition to scattered showers. so far this morning anywhere from .1 of an inch to .25 of an inch in the north bay. the east bay has seen very similar. take a look at the peninsula. already beginning to see scattered showers. into the east bay, a quarter of an inch reported in areas around oakland.

san jose has picked up .5 to .15 of an inch of rain. we are now beginning to see some breaks. we're looking at winds anywhere from 10 to 15 miles per hour from the peninsula across into the east bay. gusting to 33. so the wind advisory lasts until 10:00, and they're still ramping up. wopped gusts could reach 50 miles per hour right here along the coastline and in our hills. for most of us, between 25 and 35-mile-per-hour winds. but still, though the soil is saturated, the possibility of toppled trees as well as maybe power lines will be a possibility with this system for today. when i come back i will have a tame line, show you how this is going to play out over the course of your sunday, how long it is going to last, and i'll have a look at your numbers. >> we have new information for you. we just talked to pg&e. there are only 250 customers without power at this hour. we know they have been working hard to get the power back on
