and when people in the area should be getting their lights back on. thank you for joining us i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, you are predicting a calmer day ahead. >> calmer compared to saturday and sunday. >> so the winds are gone and the rain. >> slowly. the rain is moving north. the breeze is still blustery but not windy for many. although there are a few pockets. i've seen 33 miles an hour. but jury roomily decreasing -- but generally decreasing here. high pressure beginning to build in but still coming in wrapping around on the bottom side of that. shower activity to the north. favoring mendocino county or lake county. again the heaviest will be well to the north. more so than here. a little bit from the russian river. santa rosa and over toward st.

helena. sun and breeze and anything else. just warm. 50s and 60s on the lows. there is still a breeze but there is nothing compared to what it was like 24 hours ago. a winter weather advisory goes until this afternoon for the sierra but the snow level continues to be rather high. sun, clouds, showers, breezy. a mixed bag here. more showers to the north and highs in the 60s again. mid to upper 60s. here is sal with an update. we are looking at a commute that is already getting busy, steve. good morning to you. let's go out and take a look at what we have now with the commute at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is backed up to the mccarthur maze. those metering lights came on at 5:45. you are waiting 15-20 minutes before you make it into san francisco. also looking at a commute here where 880 is doing well in both

directions. no problems coming through. the traffic continues to look very nice. in the south bay we are looking pretty good for the most part. but highway 9 i want to mention highway 9 major delays. there is a tree now. it took a bunch of power lines down. highway 9 at 35 is closed and will be for a long time. trying to get exactly into what it will open. but for sure it won't be open for the morning commute. this is what they call a hard closure. it will be there for awhile. highway 9 at 35 if this is your area, you need to give yourself extra time. it is 6:03, let's go back to the desk. topping our news the weekend storm came with a powerful punch. people are still dealing with the aftermath. tara moriarty is in vallejo this morning where pg&e crews are working to restore power to hundreds of people. tara. >> reporter: this is going to be hours before this power pole

is fixed and power is restored. behind me you can see where a tree crashed on to a top of that power pole. also went on top of a pole. it's still a little dark out here. it's a bit windy but nearly 4700 homes in this neighborhood are without power. we're here at people's exhibit no. store. this is just north of downtown. this friday more than 150 people have been impacted by outages. as of 4:00 this morning 2300 people were without power. most of them centered in the north bay. one outage shut down a save mart grocery store in antioch. >> i was bagging. and then the power went out. and it turned back on and went back out after that. there was a few people in here. and we pretty much just closed after that. >> reporter: most of the outages are expected to be

restored by later this morning. they brought in crews from oregon and washington. we did see crews bringing in new bulbs to replace the broken ones. but it won be fixed until 4:00 tonight they are in some sort of a holding pattern. they were here when we arrived and then they left and came back. but we don't see any movement especially here when the wires are. there is a truck to the right where crews are standing by waiting for instructions. it is looking like 4:00 this afternoon before power is restored to these some 400 people here. >> thanks, tara. 6:05 is the time. the rain also helping boost northern california reservoirs. two of the state's largest saw a little bump over the weekend. shasta lake. here folsom lake inched from 46 to 47. here in the bay area levels at

lexington reservoir along highway 17 increased from 32% up to 39%. those levels will likely rise when measurements are taken again today. our time is 6:05. the only suspect ever named in the case of that dismembered body found in the suitcase in san francisco is now dead. ktvu fox 2 news reporter is in our newsroom. there are new developments in this gruesome and really mysterious case. >> this may complicate things for the homicide case even though the suspect had been released from jail because of lack of evidence. police were gathering evidence. police confirmed mark andreas died add a local hospital. he checked himself into a hospital but it's unknown why. he was arrested. the district attorney declined

to prosecute saying there was not enough evidence but the case is very much an active investigation. here's what one former prosecutor told us. >> it's possible this guy worked with somebody else. there could be a second suspect. they might have gotten the wrong guy. just because he carried the body parts alone does not mean he is the guy. this case is not over but it's certainly a tough one. >> reporter: i'm sorry to learn that mark andres died. during the short time i represented mark i found him to be a kind and engaging person. police are still trying to identify the dead man from the suitcase and who he was with before he was killed. that will likely require a lot of forensic work as far as why he died, we don't know an official cause. one of his friends told us he seemed to be deeply effected by

his arrest. back to you. >> janine de la vega, thank you. suspect described as latino between 40-50 years old. 5'7" with a slim build. salt and pepper hair and beard and police say he looked unkempt. he was wearing a brown leather jacket and black pants. the allege assault happened january 27th as the little boy was walking home from school. the boy finally break away and escaped and told his parents. a kenningston police sergeant was not cited but his attorney says several sanctions have been incited.

time is 6:08. for the santa clara county attribute attorney may seek the death penalty in a case where a man is accused of raping and killing a 17 month old baby. he is facing murder and felony charges of performing a lewd act on a child. he was babysitting his girlfriend's child at his home in east san jose when he raped and killed the baby. district attorney jeff rosen says he will announce whether he will seek the death penalty in this case later this year. rosen has decided not to seek the death penalty in six eligible cases but last year hi said he would seek the death penalty for antolin garcia torres. the man accused of kidnapping

household income. or for the family there could be a stiffer penalty. the federal government is estimating 6 million households may have to pay a penalty this year because they did not have insurance last year. the undisputed king of the 57th annual grammy awards was sam smith. it is backed up for 15-20 minute delay before you get on to the bridge. so traffic is going to be busy as you try to get on to the bridge. getting on to the span is just about normal. by the way, we found out that highway 9 at 35 this is a huge closure. a big tree came down but not only did the tree come down, there is major damage to the hillside and several power lines and a power pole is down. cal tran told us this is going to be a two-day closure. it will open tomorrow evening. that is right two days. so if you know someone in the area if this is you, you need to plan your alternate route and this will effect you until tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.. we have confirmed it with cal trans just now. 6:19 let's go to steve in the weather center. >> shoot to thrill. top ten in mine.

let's be honest this was a wind event more than a rain event and most of the forecast models are screaming rain. it was okay for some. definitely more to the north. we have needed it. we got it. the olive trees are happy. the creeks are happy. 100% of normal from santa rosa, san francisco 109%. san jose 134. as a percentage l is still more rain to the -- as a percentage, there is is still some to the south. and then into lake county. south of that sonoma county and into marin it's hit and miss. over to calistoga. and also st. helena. a little toward fair fax and acre county. there is a little guy over burlingame. just a few little like the last in a roman candle. that is about all that is left.

welcome back to mornings on 2. are being told to stay out of the water of two vicious and deadly shark attacks. the latest attack happened yesterday morning as a surfer was sitting on a surf board. a large shark caught him off guard. he was with four other surfers that -- and he died at the scene. >> it was a very large shark. we do now have a shark expert that will be coming to and assisting us to determine what type of shark it was. >> the surfer was a 41-year-old japanese national who was living in australia. the other attack happened two days ago. about 12 miles away. experts are trying to determine whether the same shark is responsible.

time 16:26. another winter tomorrow is hitting parts of the east coast this morning. it's also expected to effect us in the bay area. snow is already falling back east in parts of the east. the hardest hit area expected to be boston. they are expecting two more feet of snow. we did check in with sfo this morning. they told us that two dozen flights have already been canceled to and from the east coast. >> this storms that we are getting is unpriest denned. >> parts of massachusetts has received 60 inches of snow in two weeks. the crews are finding it hard to keep up with clearing the snow. the storm is expected hit people really hard. levi stadium will become an outdoor ice rink when it hosts a game between the sharks and

there were a few. some of the forecast models are screaming rain and for some santa cruz mountains up to the north there is some. this is heading north toward seattle and portland. as it does it drags the moisture north. and that is still enhancing some rainfall. getting reports of still some rain there. real quick middle town over eight inches of rain. forestville. east santa rosa at 5.25. a little bit in marin county. there is not much there and also just a couple little guys filtering through parts of the peninsula. over all most of it is heading

north. it is a warm pattern. just way above average. the breeze is still there. nothing compared to what it was over the weekend. decreasing showers. favoring areas to the north. more sun to the south. it's mild to warm. in that sun it can feel like the humidity factor is really high. 60s on these temps. this might be the coolest day of the week. here is sal with an update. i listen. i haven't heard anything yet expect for the usual. >> we do have a little something going on in the south bay. but for the most part the traffic is just slow in many areas. starting off with the east shore freeway. we look at westbound 80 it is backed up from the carquinez bridge to the mccarthur maze. you will see is the traffic will be a little slow. i want to mention at the bay bridge toll plaza we do have metering lights a little slower than usual. there is a stalled vehicle up on the bridge. that is hawking it a little slower right now getting into san francisco. i do want to mention that

traffic is going to be a little bit slower than usual. maybe instead of 25-30 it will be 35-40 minutes getting into the city. also mentioning move over to the maps here. there is the problem on 35. a tree came down blocking both sides. power lines are also down. massive repair is needed. this is not going to be reopened until tomorrow according to chp. it's 6:34 let's go back to the desk. thousands of people still have no electricity this morning after this weekend's powerful storm. ktvu fox 2 news reporter tara moriarty is live in vallejo. i know pg&e crews have made a lot of progress. of clearing away a tree that knocked out power to hundreds of customers, tara. >> reporter: crews have to basically untangled all of these down wires from the tree and the brush. you can see behind me here. the tree trimmers will be

fixed until 4:00 tonight. we are live in vallejo tara moriarty back to you. >> okay, thank you. time is 6:35. public work crews they are also cleaning up a lot of debris left behind after a lot of bay area roads flooded over the weekend. cars were splashing through flooded areasen drivers were slamming on breaks to avoid crashes but not everyone was lucky. >> i really worry about that. because one time i got home after the raining. my car actually spin. so after that i just carefully drive. >> tow truck driver out there say they saw 2-3 accidents per hour. the chp says the reason so many people were spinning out is because they were going too fast and plus the roads were slick since we haven't had rain

in more than a month. the high winds caused many flights to be canceled in and out of sfo. the airport duty manager told us 118 flights were canceled yesterday alone. even though scattered showers and winds are expected today, sfo does not expect it to impact any flights but they are moved their focus on to the storm on to the east coast. that has kansasinged nearly two dozen flights. a preschool in the north bay is open this morning. even though it was badly damaged by a fire late saturday night. ktvu fox 2 news reporter alex savidge is live at the school. you are in santa rosa where students are starting to arrive, alex. >> reporter: dave, yes, good morning to you. a couple of students have been dropped off here this morning. one parent told me she hadn't even heard about the fire over the weekend. she was however very grateful that the school was open for

business today. as we push inside there. a couple of the kids are inside. one of the teachers are already here. one entire building of this school was destroyed by this weekend fire. but what they are going to do here is move all the kids into the other building for today and that is how they will get by. teachers were here at the children's learning center on steel lane in santa rosa. they came here to rearrange the classrooms and get all the supplies ready for the school day. they will have to shift the layout of the place and for the 30 children that come here every day, it will now be a tight squeeze. all of this damage was done during a fire that started here late saturday night. it burned through five rooms in total. destroying supplies like construction paper, puzzles, and glue. >> dress up, all kinds of stuff. puzzles. just everything. everything you have. the whole entire school.

you know. it's all gone. >> reporter: already this community is stepping up to help out the preschool. people who have heard about the fire in this area have come by to drop off donations. investigators are working on the cause of the fire early on it seems to be that it probably started with a problem with the school's electrical system. that is the early thought here from fire investigators. as we bring you back out here, you can see here. here is another parent dropping their student off. again it is business as usual here at the children's learning center in santa rosa. and despite all the damage that was done, there is a sense of relief it didn't happen during a school day. >> absolute lids. alex savidge, thank you. we'll talk to you later. time is 6:39. about 40 homes have been destroyed and a wind driven fire one that is burning in the sierra foothills. this one started friday. quickly spread to 7,000 acres.

firefighters are battling 50-75 miles an hour winds but the rain did help them make some progress. the communities of paradise and swayl meadows have been evacuated but some of the evacuation orders may be lifted today. the price tag for repairing earthquake damage to government buildings could be more than $20 million. the county has spent $3 million for repairs from last august quake. that is according to the napa valley register and one of the biggest concerns is repairing that historic county courthouse which includes the roof that has a giant hole in it. parts of that courthouse built in 1878 more than 100 roads and bridges were damaged in the weigh. fewer than 30 of those have been fixed at this point. our time is 6:40. jury selection goes on for the man accused of killing the man portrayed in that block buster movie american sniper. in 20 minutes the issue that legal analysts say are

complicating the high profile case. >> but first a new twist in san francisco's dismembered body case. the suspects mysterious sudden death and what it means to the investigation. >> good morning. san mateo bridge let's see that for ourselves. you can see traffic coming in on the peninsula. not all that bad. actually this looks more -- this looks more like the richmond bridge. i think i misspoke here. we'll get all the bridges in our next traffic update. >> our system still giving us some rain. more to the north. it's kind of winding down and heading out of the area. but still we have an active monday.

so you can. welcome back to mornings on 2. the number of confirmed measles cases in california it has topped 100 now. new york senator chuck schumer urging the centers for disease control to offer free flu shots at schools and health clinics. similar to the availability of flu shots. he also says the cdc should do more to let people know about the existing programs that provide free vaccinations. not out of the concern over the price tag or the convince.

6:44 is the time. back over to sal. any problems, sal? >> we are look at a problem now. i was looking at the latest on highway 9 and 35. we still have the tree that couple down and messed things up in the santa cruz mountains. highway 9 at 35. this is going to be a closure we are going to have to deal with until tomorrow. so if this is your area, you will be dealing with traffic tieups and alternate routes until they fix what is going on. not only did they take down power lines but there has been major damage to the hillside. chp says it won't be until 5:30 tomorrow evening. all right let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic here is slower. we had a stalled vehicle on the upper deck of the bay bridge. 30-40 minute delays on the toll plaza. you can tell when you look at the traffic and it's not moving that well. and on the san mateo bridge it looks okay. dumbarton bridge also a little

bit heavy but there are no problems. and richmond, san rafael bridge that looks good. no problem on the carquinez or the benicia bridges. 6:45 let's go to steve. would you say a wind event or rain event over the weekend? >> you know it was more of a wind event. even when it stopped raining it was windy. >> i would agree. thank you. many felt that way. there were 4-7 inches of rain. russian river north into lake county about 4-8. there were isolated 10 inches or more. most of the models are forecasting just copious amounts of rain. really not so much in the wind but that friday night and sunday that was more of a wind event to me. in my opinion. you can be your own judge and tell me what you think. the system on sunday is moving north. as it moves north it's more for seattle and portland.

. some rainfall was really, really good. mill valley that is not a lot. they had just over 3. pacifica 3.25. antioch 1.45. crockett had 2.5. marsh creek road about 3 inches of rain. for some it was pretty good and there is still rain going up into mendocino county and lake county and definitely tailing off. a few scattered showers around sonoma county. over to calistoga, ang win. the trend is to fade these out. there is really not much left in marin county. there was a little bit on the peninsula. it looks like all of that has fallen apart. but still mostly cloudy. mild, mild. my goodness. near 60 for some. these are warm systems there. not cold whatsoever. higher elevations cooled off a little bit. upper 40s but a lot of 50s.

lows should be 38-46 this time of year. we are not even close. still a breeze but coming down over the the next couple of hours here and really tailing off by tonight as the low moves far enough away from us. the pressure will relax and the breeze will tail off. mild truckee at 36. and snow reports still continue pretty high. although coming down a little bit today. there goes our system accelerating out. it will enhance a little bit of rainfall rates. for us a few scattered showers but decreasing. sun, clouds, showers breezy. more sun to the south. in that sun still breezy. it is a very tropical feel with temperatures in the 60s for many. this will be the coolest day of the week. temperatures will rebound. if not tomorrow then they will by wednesday. it looks down right warm toward the end of the weekend thursday, friday, into

saturday. next rain around the 20s. sharks and kings play outside on the 21st. >> that should be fun though. >> i hope so. that is a big game. i went saturday night and saw the sharks play carolina. >> nice. 6:48 is the time. san francisco police are investigating another twist in the case of that dismembered body found in a suitcase. ktvu fox 2 reporter janine de la vega is joining us from the hall of justice with details on the mysterious death of a suspect in the case. janine. >> reporter: pam, police are still trying to figure out what led up to the death of a person found in the suitcase. and now with the only named suspect gone it could make things more difficult. we have learned that that suspect 59-year-old mark andrus checked himself into a local hospital on saturday and died that night. his death comes just over a week after he was arrested in connection a grizzly discovery of a man's torso in his

crash. it happened on the pacific coast highway. investigators say jenner was in the third car involved in the crash and his car pushed the victim's car into another lane and she was hit head on. deputies are looking into whether one of the drivers was making an illegal ux--- u-turn. alabama officially just became the 37th state to allow gay marriage. and in the past hour, alabama started issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. now this comes after ruling by the supreme court that said it will not stop same sex marriages from starletting. the court denied the request of the alabama attorney general to extend a hold on a judges ruling that over turned the states ban on gay marriage. >> same sex marriage has no impact in a negative way on anyone who is in a heterosexual relationship. it's simple acknowledgment we
